Sunday Words of Encouragement July 8, 2018

It was really nice to be back to our church home and family. Our Sunday School lesson was on Faith and healing – as always, a good message in itself.

Praise and Worship music helped prepare us for Pastor’s sermon. He has started a new series based on 1 Peter, titled The Strong. Last week he was discussing Honor and he decided to continue on that element today. He noted that “The strong live different (than the world)”. We honor others. It is an ongoing attitude. Honor is born out of love, not respect. In the world we look for affirmation. Many do our chores or jobs well because we want approval.

But there are some times when we should just serve. We should be giving honor instead of receiving. And if/when people ask “Why are you doing this?” we should be ready to respond that ‘we are showing love by service’. We are The Strong.

One of the ten commandments is to Honor father and mother. Honor and love are synonymous. We need to pursue honoring God. Three points today provide the same message.

Point One: Living for the honor of the world sets us up to be an enemy of God. James 4:4.
Our motives mean something. (I think that was part of last week’s message.) The proud seek honor from the world but God honors the humble. James 4:6.

Solomon said at a later time in his life: “Everything under the sun is meaningless”. Ecclesiastes 1:14. We have to be careful in our daily living not to rob God of honor. Whoever purses righteousness and unfailing love will find life, prosperity and honor. Proverbs 21:21-27. The Godly love to give. v26. The humble are honored. Proverbs 29:23.

Point Two: Honoring God with my life makes me a friend of God.
Be careful not to honor yourself as you may be brought low. Instead seek the lower seat and accept the honor of being brought forward. Luke 14:8-10; John 14:23.

Point Three: God honors those who live for Him. 1 Samuel 2:30.
Christ disciples bring honor to God and others; not to themselves. John 15:8.

Indifference is a dangerous ingredient. We should always be prepared to give an answer to why we serve. 1 Peter 3:15. We can share that Jesus is all that truly matters in this world.

What is in the way of our honoring God? Sin? Good helps remove. Attitude? The Spirit can change. We need to live our lives to give honor to God and others. Let the Spirit point out what is in the way. Pride? Attitude of self importance? Be humble. Ask God to purify our hearts.

It took me a bit of time to find the song I wanted today.

A Verse for Today:
Proverbs 21:21 (NIV)
21 Whoever pursues righteousness and love
finds life, prosperity and honor.

Lord, I pray that you help me be a humble servant to show others Your love.

Audible Book Review: Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire

This has good elements for urban fantasy but didn’t grab me.
Discount Armageddon
InCryptid, Book 1
By: Seanan McGuire
Narrated by: Emily Bauer
Series: InCryptid, Book 1
Length: 11 hrs and 20 mins
Unabridged Audiobook
Release date: 11-20-12
Language: English
Publisher: Audible Studios
Genre: Urban Fantasy
My Rating: Story and Audio: 3.75 of 5.0

Publisher's Summary
Ghoulies. Ghosties. Long-legged beasties. Things that go bump in the night....
The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity - and humanity from them. Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she'd rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and is spending a year in Manhattan while she pursues her career in professional ballroom dance. Sounds pretty simple, right? It would be, if it weren't for the talking mice, the telepathic mathematicians, the asbestos supermodels, and the trained monster-hunter sent by the Price family's old enemies, the Covenant of St. George.
When a Price girl meets a Covenant boy, high stakes, high heels, and a lot of collateral damage are almost guaranteed. To complicate matters further, local cryptids are disappearing, strange lizard-men are appearing in the sewers, and someone's spreading rumors about a dragon sleeping underneath the city....
©2012 Seanan McGuire (P)2012 Audible, Inc.

Review:
Verity Price is from a long line of monster hunters who broke away from the original Covenant of St. George. The Covenant believes in killing all monsters whether they are predators or not. The Price family line realized that some cryptids (other than human) are harmless and innocent. The Price family now train as cryptozoologists who study the cryptids, protecting them instead of killing them. They still need to defend themselves and the criptids so they train in all sorts of battle skills and weaponry. Verity’s favorite method of training is through dance but her family will only let her participate in dance under an assumed name and if she can show she still manages her true family purpose.

Verity has gained the privilege to be away from the family, living in Manhatten with a wonderful collection of special talking mice who love to Hail a new celebration almost every day. Verity works as a waitress at a local strip bar which is owned by a boogeyman. She participates in local dance contests hoping to advance to regional and national contests.

Verity stumbles into a trap set by a Covenant hunter in town scouting the monster situation. Their first encounter is less than friendly although they soon find themselves working together to help find local criptids who are going missing. Dominic and Verity encounter lizard-men in the sewer while investigating the missing women and a rumor about a dragon under the city.

I was drawn to the description of various monsters and monster hunters. There is plenty of action but for some reason I had trouble connecting with the main character. I don’t know if it was her portrayal as a young, rather careless warrior or the audio presentation just didn’t jive for me. I liked the secondary characters including Dominic, the Covenant hunter, and Verity’s friend/cousin Sara, a telepathic mathematician. There was more sexual discussion that I like, which isn’t unusual for the genre. As the story moved along I did enjoy the danger and the rescues. Although there are good elements for a strong beginning to an urban fantasy series, it just didn’t get me enthused. There are mixed reviews so take a peek at the inside of the ebook or listen to the sample and see if you want to give it a try.

Audio Notes: Emily Bauer provides a perky presentation with sometimes nasally and whiney sound. She does provide distinct character voices and energy. Still, the narration didn’t make the package work for me.

Martha's Bookshelf***Friday Pick Giveaway July 6, 2018

Happy Friday! Happy July!

This has been a busy week. We had a quiet 4th although we had both our country's BD and my husband's to celebrate! He was glad I stayed home from work. I spent the morning pulling weeds in the backyard. Then most of the afternoon packing clothes from my closet. Hubby put on Facebook to be careful of leaving clothes too long in the closet because they apparently shrink. Ha Ha!
We've had some rain to help cool down the 90+ temps.

Here's wishing everyone a cool week of reading!

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost EIGHT years I have posted 75 groups of 16 (1,200) books to find new homes! (as of November 2, 2017).

I am happy to say that so far about 1,172+books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A month or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Note rules here regarding international entries.
Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

Repeating this helpful blog tip: You can right click on a link and you will be given the choice to open the link in a new window or tab so you do not navigate away from the screen you are on!! I use this all the time!
