WEEK #459
(One Question.)
Marjorie asks: Do you have a favourite television show that you enjoy watching??
I still watch very little on TV beyond some news programs and occasional movies that I tape. I also tape and occasionally watch NCIS and Blacklist. A lot of times the TV is just background noise while I am doing blogs or work at home.

Sharing Beyond Books #458 Comment Giveaway May 20, 2023

Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the last question.
Last post SBB #457: BN100 asked: What do you think is too much to pay for an ebook (depending on number of pages)? For example, saw an author price a 32 page ebook for $10.
Here were the responses:
Marjorie doesn't buy ebooks but thinks maybe $5.00 is a reasonable price.
Fredamans says "I am against paying more than $10 for an ebook." And if it gets near $20, you may as well buy the print book.
Ashfa only buys "ebooks if they are under $5." She prefers print books and doesn't mind paying for them.
Life's Simple Pleasures states she doesn't buy ebooks (no Kindle) but she also thinks $5.00 would be reasonable.

My reply is in the original post.

WEEK #458

Scattered Leaves asks: Have you ever used a book light??

Sharing Beyond Books #457 Comment Giveaway April 15, 2023

Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the last question.
Last post SBB #456: Miki asked: Do you want goodies (mug, pillow, etc?) from your favourite series or do you prefer when author sticks to books only??
Here were the responses:
Kristin likes swag, favorite fuzzy socks.
Marjorie likes books with bookmark.
Fredamans prefers books only; she doesn't buy literature merchandise.
Elaine likes swag; her niece collects and buys art and boxes of favorite authors.
Anonymous would like bookish subscriptions but doesn't live in US. She would like T-shirts or a scarf of her favorite series.
My reply is in the original post. (I'm giving away most swag I've gotten over the years other than special bookmarks or a handmade gift.)

WEEK #457
(One Question.)
BN100 asks: What do you think is too much to pay for an ebook (depending on number of pages)? For example, saw an author price a 32 page ebook for $10.
I have to note that I am much more apt to buy audiobooks than print or ebooks. I rarely even pay $.99 for an ebook although I sometimes pay $1.99 or even up to $4.99 so I can get the matching audiobook at a discounted price.  If the audiobook is $7.99, I am still paying $9.98 or $12.98 for both formats.

Sharing Beyond Books #456 Comment Giveaway March 18, 2023

Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books.  Sorry that I am a week late posting this month. In my brain it was set for mid month.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the last question.
Last post SBB #455: Life's Simple Pleasures asked: Has the pandemic turned you into a gardener? Be it flowers/leafy plants as a hobby or a vege gardener for food??
Two commenters added house plants during the pandemic but only one added indoor due to the pandemic. Two of us continued to work so had not new hobbies. One commenter has always had plants and needs to remember them now that she is working more hours. The sixth commenter indicated she lives in a condo so no veggie gardens.

The Winner from SBB #455 comments is #5 ASHFA who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the Updated (**Finally!) ARC/Review titles or (recently updated) Love and Christmas titles - all linked near the end of the post. -- [9-18-2021 I have added a new box and crossed off books no longer available through August 2021.]

WEEK #456
(One Question.)
Miki asks: Do you want goodies (mug, pillow, etc?) from your favourite series or do you prefer when author sticks to books only??
I did enjoy goodies, even bookmarks, for a few years. Now I rarely enter giveaways and I am apt to send mugs and t-shirts to yard sale.

Sharing Beyond Books #455 Comment Giveaway February 11, 2023

Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books.  I am sorry only five people commented last month but I am glad to hear from each of you. I will continue this post monthly for now.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the last question.
Last post SBB #454: Natalia asked: What would you do if you had more free time??
Two commenters said reading and two more included reading. Two of us included decluttering, and another mentioned other household chores. One also mentioned things like crafts and baking. Finally another item mentioned was jigsaw and word puzzles. I would like those too. I was hooked on Wordle, Dordle, and Quordle for several months but when my computer got cleaned, I stopped mostly due to be tired at night.

The Winner from SBB #453 comments is #4 LIFE'S SIMPLE PLEASURES who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the Updated (**Finally!) WEEK #455
(One Question.)
Life's Simple Pleasures asks: Has the pandemic turned you into a gardener? Be it flowers/leafy plants as a hobby or a vege gardener for food??
Since I continued working through the pandemic, I didn't add gardening as a hobby, even though I love it. However, I added six decent size plants from my husband's funeral last May. I now consider my front room with those plants as my little garden of remembrance.

Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books.  I want to stay in touch with others so for now, I will continue this post monthly.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the last question.
Last post SBB #453: Ashfa asked: Do you enjoy reading books from villain’s POV? Who is your favorite villain??
Two commenters mentioned Maleficent. Two had no favs and the others mentioned: Vicious (V.E. Schwab), Shadow Jack from Villains Rule (M.K. Gibson) and Hades.

The Winner from SBB #453 comments is #1 FREDAMANS who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the Updated (**Finally!) WEEK #454
(One Question.)
Natalia asks: What would you do if you had more free time??
I get in a lot of reading (listening). I've added a little more time with my Bible reading and prayer time. I've been spending more time in the kitchen since I am cooking for myself. And of course I spend much time on the computer - work and blog.

If I had more free time I would like to think I would use that time to relax a little more. Right now though, I could use time decluttering.

Sharing Beyond Books #453 Comment Giveaway December 17, 2022

Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books. (Note - I am going to continue to post monthly now, probably through the end of the year. This one runs through January 14, 2023.) As much as I appreciate the six to eight regular commenters, I am thinking about ending this post. I haven't updated books for a while and I have been so busy that I am not keeping up with mail outs and payouts.  I know I will get to them but the time input adds to my work load. I checked my spreadsheet and there are five or so questions still available (that haven't been asked before) so I might continue for those. We'll see how I feel in January

Thanks to everyone who commented on the last question.
Last post SBB #452: Alina asked: What are some of your favorite holiday traditions??
I enjoyed the different traditions that were shared. Elaine noted that her family opens one gift on Christmas Eve. I like that and we did that when I was young. In our home, mom and dad picked the gift and it was always pajamas.

The Winner from SBB #451 comments is #2 BN100 who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the Updated (**Finally!) WEEK #452
(One Question.)
Ashfa asks: Do you enjoy reading books from villain’s POV? Who is your favorite villain??
I have enjoyed some stories from the villain's POV. The one that comes to mind is Villains Rule. When I was looking for an image, I was reminded of: Voldemort (Harry Potter), Cornelius Snow (Hunger Games), Pennywise (It), Maleficent, and more. Of course, most of those are not from the villain's POV.

WEEK #452
(One Question.)
Alina asked: What are some of your favorite holiday traditions??
I love Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. I like to go around the table and give thanks for Thanksgiving. We aren't sure what we will do this year since Bob isn't here to help cook. Heather and the girls were sick again last week so she doesn't feel like cooking. I am going to suggest we get together even if we have pizza! Its about family more than food.

For Christmas, first, I like putting out at least one of my nativity decorations. Then, I love having sentimental ornaments. I have collected ornaments on our cruises so they bring a nice memory. I will miss the hot cider my hubby made for Christmas time. Heather and I will have to figure out the recipe.

Another thing I love is filling stockings with little things - candy, gum (maybe), chapstick, soap or lotions, and at least one toy like a small Lego or special coloring book.

My son and his family are coming from Christmas - yay! I volunteered to go there since it is only one of me and five of them. But the kids really want to come here.

WEEK #451
(One Question.)
Elizabeth asks: Where do you keep track of books that you've read, as well as want to read? Any online suggestions??
I have tracked books on Goodreads for about 10 years (even though I joined in 2008). I have kept the lists on the blog since 2009 and I've had an annual spreadsheet for four years. I have a WORD document list from 2001 to 2005. After that I had a special booklist software program from 2006 to 2009 when I started the blog. I am not sure I can find the password to access that program so that is awkward. Fortunately, I have lists of favorite authors and the books checked off on the author lists showing those read in those years.

WEEK #450
(One Question.)
Marjorie asks: Do you still mask going shopping even though you do not have too??
No. Our state opened up around October 2020. I didn't start going out in crowds for over a year as we were mindful of my husband's health. Over the past year I have probably worn my mask about 4 times. Twice when the activity requested it and twice the week following my quarantine from my second bout with Covid and I was out in public.  (I will say it drove me crazy when people were wearing their masks below their nose.)

Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books. (Note - I'll be traveling and visiting the northern family over the early weeks of August so the next SBB post will be August 20, 2022. Enjoy another mid year month - summer or winter!)

Thanks to everyone who commented on the last question.
Last post SBB#447 Ashfa asks: What are your favourite books that deals with pandemics and post-apocalyptic worlds??
We only had five commenters in additon to me. Perhaps the usual participants don't like the genre or they forgot to come back and answer.
Three of the commenters didin't have titles to offer; MaryP mentioned The Hunger Games Series, which was a good series. Fredamans shared: 56 Days by Catherine Ryan Howard was a pandemic book that I read in the last year and loved it!" I'll have to check into that one.

WEEK #448
(One Question.)
BN100 asks: Favorite ways to cool down in the heat??
I am indoors most of the time and a little surprised when I walk out into oppressive heat. I'll be visiting my son and family and expect we will spend time in their lovely pool. And I will be drinking plenty of water.

Last post SBB#446 Becky asked: If you had a choice, which format would you choose for all of your books (Print, ebook, or audio)??

WEEK #447
(One Question.)
Ashfa asks: What are your favourite books that deals with pandemics and post-apocalyptic worlds??
BECAUSE THIS QUESTION MIGHT TAKE LONGER TO CONSIDER AND ANSWER, (Plus I want a break in the next 30 days) I will leave this question and deadline for a month, until July 23.
I saw this question and started creating a list a year ago - June 2021.
The first thing I did was look up the distinction between dystopian and post-apocalyptic:
Dystopian novels often focus on societies and cultures that appear stable and well established, whereas post-apocalyptic cultures are more imbalanced or volatile. Apocalyptic: An apocalyptic novel tells the story of the end of the world, which occurs during the timeline of the story.
Common themes and situations seen in apocalyptic fiction are:
Depletion of resources
Dangerous weather patterns and/or exposure to the elements
Radiation after a nuclear war
Pandemic sickness (causing extreme loss of life)
Loss of technology
Nomadic living
Group dynamics in survival situations

I think my favorite trope is surviving after loss of technology.
My list includes close to 50 books (without including fantasy/zombie worlds EXCEPT for D. J. Molles which would add another 25+) broken down as follows:
Finished series = 9
Series in progress read more than one = 6
Have read/listened to one and plan more = 15
Series I want to try: 18

CLASSICs: Alas Babylon by Pat Frank -- Written in 1959 about surviving nuclear holocaust.
Earth Abides: The 60th Anniversary Edition By: George R. Stewart – Written in 1949. One man survives deadly disease.
Classics To be read: The Last Man by Mary Shelley
The Day Of The Triffids Audiobook By John Wyndham

My Favorites include the two classics; all series/books by D.J. Molle; The Survivalist Series by A. American (10 books); After It Happened Series by Devon C. Ford (12 books); several economic collapse series by Mark Goodwin (Christian principles) (Over 15 books in 4 series); The Ranch: Jack Sterlings (6 books).
Two stand-alone titles: The Road By: Cormac McCarthy – Bleak story of father and son crossing wasteland Amercia.
(eBook) When the English Fall: A Novel by David Williams – How would a loss of technology impact Amish community?

I have too many to list. If any one would like my list, feel free to provide your email and I will send it along.

Last post SBB#445 Faith Hope and Cherry Tea asked: How about annotated books? Do you like to know what local language, customs, dialogue are referring to in annotations? preferred or not?
Four commenters were okay with annotations, two were okay with glossary type information, two will look up info if they want to, one didn't like annotations in a book, and one never read any with annotation.

The Winner from SBB#445 comments is #1 MARY P who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the Updated (**Finally!) Becky asks: If you had a choice, which format would you choose for all of your books (Print, ebook, or audio)??
There was a similar question in 2011 - So maybe we'll see if preferences have changed in 11 years. I don't think I would like to be limited to only one format, but if I had to pick only one format it would be audio for sure.

(One Question.)
Faith Hope and Cherry Tea asks: How about annotated books? Do you like to know what local language, customs, dialogue are referring to in annotations? preferred or not?
I'm not sure I have seen too many fiction books that are annotated. Sometimes they have a glossary of words. I do like that when there are unusual words, customs, or places that would benefit with that information.
