HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!
This was another busy week - nothing new I guess. I continue to work late each evening and have started going in an hour earlier too. I wonder if I will ever get caught up.

We had beautiful weather again. Getting warmer but lovely, sunny days. A little rain today to feed the earth and cool things off.

My reading seemed slow although I did finish three books: 2 Audible titles and one digital. I posted four reviews and my usual memes.

I only visited 24 blogs again last week.

May 13, 2018 - I am really enjoying the prayer app which gives me five prayer groups each morning!
I continue on track with my morning reading the One Year Bible plan on my smartphone. It is a great way to start my day as I share the joy of the word with other friends on the YouVersion Bible App. Hubby and I still share in discussion although we are reading slightly different places. You can check out audio of the One Year Bible Plan on the companion commentary online.

I completed 3 books and posted 4 reviews. That puts me at 4 reviews due.
I need to find time to add more reviews to Goodreads, Amazon and Audible.
My NetGalley shelf is now at 15 since I added another. I still have one committed author title in queue and some new sent by authors. Also many through InstaFreebie. I have more new author requests but I still haven't replied.

Sunday Words of Encouragement May 13, 2018

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
We had another good Sunday School and proceeded to church service with lots of “Happy Mother’s Day” shared. Pastor continued his sermon series on Relationslips. Now he is sharing elements that are needed for healthy relationships.

The first thing needed is good Communication. He noted how Moms have a unique set of communication skills that includes looks, voices and names, among others tricks.

At one time men all spoke the same language and began to build a tower (the Tower of Babel) to God. Then God chose to confuse the languages. Genesis 11.

Point: Healthy relationship is dependent on both people speaking the other person’s language.

5 Love Languages were set out by Gary Chapman. These are Affirmation, Physical Touch, Acts of Service, Gifts and Quality Time.

Relationships have a much greater chance of success when:

• Both parties speak the same language.
•  Both care enough to make the effort to speak the other’s love language.

Relationships struggle when:

• One or both choose to speak in the language they feel like using. 
•  One or both stops speaking.
•  One or both refuse to fill the other’s love tank.
•  One or both seek out other avenues to fill their own love tank.

God uses all five love languages. It is apparent in old and new testament scripture. Healthy relationships are important they hinge on communication. Acts 2:42-47.

Pastor encouraged us to know our own love language and know the language of our significant others (spouses and children). Then we are to make an effort to fill the tank of those who deserve or need love from you.

Review:
Mike, a man in his mid-40s, is an ordinary man with his wife, Tracy, a daughter, Nicole, in college, 19-year-old Justin, 15-year-old Travis and an aging bull dog named Henry. Mike is a former Marine, but that didn’t prepare him for zombies. When the “flu” turns his neighbors into the walking dead, Mike and Travis head to Walmart to pick up Justin. In addition to Justin, they bring home overweight, affable Tommy. Tommy quickly becomes part of the family, saving them a time or two with an unexplained second sight. Nicole and her boyfriend make it home to make it one strong family group.

Mike was already a prepper, but the family begins to scavenge for supplies to aid in survival. They plan to hunker down with other survivors. in their subdivision of Little Turtle. There are some who cooperate, helping to build a defensive wall. Others don’t cooperate, and some are downright psychopaths. Still, the real enemies are the zombie hoards.

The story is written as journal entries, mostly by Mike but some by Tracy. The tale follows the family as they face the conflicts and risk their lives. There are otherworldly elements that add weirdness to the horror. There is a rather crude sense of humor with cliched phrases. This underlies plenty of death and foul language. I wasn’t gripped by the characters and found this to be a standard zombie conflict. I’m not planning on picking up the next books (unless I need a “Z” title). I recommend it to readers who like zombie stories.

Audio Notes: Sean Runnette does a fine job with the narration. It is all a bit slow at the beginning but soon enough he is portraying the characters through their distinct personalities and leaning into the humor. I preferred listening to this rather than reading.

Review:
This story starts with four rough Role Playing Game characters (RPGs) making errors and dying in a tavern. The death is observed by four Non Player Characters: the half-ogre tavern owner/bartender named Grumph, a roughish gnome named Thistle, a rather clumsy local guard, Eric, and the mayor’s tomboyish daughter, Gabrielle. The NPCs find a summons from the King requiring four unnamed ‘heroes’ to travel to Solium to receive a quest.

The summons calls for a paladin (guard), a barbarian, a wizard and a rogue. If the group doesn’t arrive, it could anger the King and result in the destruction of their entire town. Rather than allow that, the four NPCs decide to take the summons and seek the quest, hoping for rewards…and adventure. The intrepid four assign themselves the roles they think fit and head off.

Shortly after beginning their journey the new heroes are captured by Goblins. By a strange magical event the heroes escape, discovering their true roles in the process. They each will grow into their roles as they pursue the quest with bravery, strength, magic and cleverness.

I haven’t played an RPG in years since they take time (that I prefer to use reading). The story concept was interesting, and the execution was fun and engaging. I listened late into the night and was rooting for the underdog NPC heroes all the way! I will be getting book two to continue with the adventure. I recommend this to readers who enjoy action adventure served up with humor.

Audio Notes: Roger Wayne does a wonderful job with the narration. He provides clear narration with distinct voices for the characters. The audio enhanced my enjoyment of the story.

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost EIGHT years I have posted 75 groups of 16 (1,200) books to find new homes! (as of November 2, 2017).

I am happy to say that so far about 1,161+books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A month or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Review:
This story is set in an era of political violence in 1980s Northern Ireland. Detective Sean Duffy, a Catholic, is a new detective working for the Royal Ulster Constabulary. He checks for bombs under his car before driving as he doesn’t really know if he is safe in his Protestant neighborhood. Nor does he feel safe near the police station or out and about as he goes about his job.

A man is found dead in his car with his hand cut off and lying on the floor. Duffy feels as though he missed something at the scene. He doesn’t realize what it was until the coroner calls to tell him the hand belongs to someone else. Hours later they find the other man. The sawed-off hands would indicate they may have been informers but both men are gay and the murderer leaves messages noting that as his motive. Duffy’s superiors don’t want to admit there may be a serial killer of gay men on the loose and they are pressuring him to wrap this up quickly.

While hunting clues, Duffy finds an Irish girl hanging in the woods. The young woman turns out to have disappeared months earlier and she was the ex-wife of one of the current prisoners who are part of a hunger strike. Authorities are ready to declare the hanging as a suicide, but Duffy doesn’t think so. His gut tells him there is a connection somewhere.

Duffy is not making friends as he stalks a local henchman to unsavory places. Then he discovers one of the victims was the head of a secret IRA division. Things are getting more complicated and soon he is a target even as his boss pulls him off the case.

I really liked Duffy from the beginning although I didn’t like all his behaviors. I appreciated his determination and willingness to listen to his gut instinct. He puts himself at risk, ignoring orders to stay away from the case. Violence is prevalent among the characters and it is hard to determine which is the ‘right’ side of the Irish conflicts. The history elements were really fascinating. I liked the detailed police procedure and tension. The gritty style clearly fit the time and characters. I recommend this to readers who like gritty, police procedural detective mystery and those who may be interested in Irish conflict.

Audio Notes: Gerard Doyle’s narration enhances the story as the accents make the setting come alive. The narration made this a better ‘read’ for me.

Review:
This is a business guide, cheer-leading sort of book. The advice is similar to setting goals but really more fundamental. If we all found our “Why” we would choose work we love to do and not just find a job to make money. On a corporate level, the author explains the importance of knowing the “Why” for the business and then making certain all employees, from top CEO to lowest mailroom clerk, understand and support the “Why”. This should be in mind when interviewing and hiring so that the right person is selected for the job.

Sinek gives good examples of companies who succeeded by knowing and keeping their “Why” in focus. He also shared examples of companies that had money and leaders but failed for lack of a defined “Why”. There are also examples of companies that lost their “Why” along the way, either by trying products or marketing that didn’t fit or by losing a leader who embodied the “Why” but the successor leader did not.

There is redundancy in the material and this could have been condensed to a better presentation. As interesting as this book is, I struggled a little in applying it to a smaller company such as my own. Sinek finally acknowledged about 4/5ths in that the concept of The Golden Circle may work better for larger companies. Still, the idea of working out of passion (the “Why”) instead of just for money, makes good sense and would seem to foster better success. It is possible that this would be better in print as the reader could go back as a resource more easily than with an audiobook. I recommend this to anyone interested in being inspired to find and start with “Why”.

Audio Notes: It is often interesting when an author narrates their own book. Sinek does a good job, clearly knowing and having enthusiasm for the material. I was glad to listen as it was effective use of driving time.

I had another busy, busy week. Heather (daughter and manager) was out Thursday through Monday for family time cruise. That left me covering for several closings and fundings on Friday and more on Monday with a trip to Bay County. More working late each evening.

We had beautiful weather this past week. We will be seeing higher 80s this week.

I had a fair week reading; listening was good. I finished three books total: 2 Audible titles and one digital. I posted three reviews and my usual memes.

May 6, 2018 - I added a prayer app on my smartphone this week. It is helping to remind me of my prayer list each morning.
I continue on track with my morning reading the One Year Bible plan on my smartphone. It is a great way to start my day and I share the joy of the word with other friends on the YouVersion Bible App. Hubby and I still share in discussion although we are reading slightly different places. You can check out audio of the One Year Bible Plan on the companion commentary online.

I completed 3 books and posted 3 reviews. That still leaves me 5 reviews.
I need to find time to add more titles to Goodreads, Amazon and Audible.
My NetGalley shelf is now at 14. I still have one committed author title in queue and some new sent by authors. Also many through InstaFreebie. I have more new author requests but I still haven't replied.

Sunday Words of Encouragement May 6, 2018

This morning we enjoyed the continued lesson on Grace and Mercy in Sunday School. We had nice worship time and then Pastor continued his sermon series on Relationslips.

Pastor summarized the last three weeks:
“I owe you” – guilt. The remedy is confession.
Then “You owe me” – anger. The remedy is forgiveness.
Today is “I owe me” – greed. The remedy is generosity.

Today he discussed the ever present need of people to ‘want more’. They covet what others have and some feel “I deserve more as I'm trying to serve God more than that other person”.
They think: “God owes me” which stems from Jealousy.
There are two aspects of jealousy. Our God is a jealous God represents the positive aspect.
The other aspect is the negative, self-destructive emotion of wanting what we don’t have.

Jealousy almost always creates struggle, tension and damage in relationships. We become discontented with our lives and possessions, even our relationships. External conflicts are result of internal desire bubbling up.

This problem is addressed in James Chapter 4. We want what we don't have, and we don’t receive it because we ask with a wrong motive. James 4:2.

Point: A growing life for God makes it impossible for jealousy to grow.

Jealousy keeps us from being able to follow the most basic relationship command: LOVE one another. The tendency is to think ‘it is not the other persons fault and not my fault, so it must be God's fault.

Why do our relationships suffer? We can’t take it out on God, so we take our frustrations out on those around us. All relationship conflict has one common demonstrator: me. James 4:4-10.

Sin is the pursuit to find fulfillment outside of God. We need to focus on God, not the world or worldly things. James says, “Take it all to God”.

Are you happy within yourself?
People can't satisfy us, but a right relationship with Jesus can.
The remedy to the jealousy issue has two elements: (1) Love God with all of you. (2) Celebrate others.

No one else owes me. If we honestly face the shadow of the cross God we will recognize that God doesn't owe me anything. I owe Him everything.

I went through several songs and decided on this one for today.

I pray Lord that You help me stay focused on You and help me love others like You do.

bn100 asks: How do you decide which books to giveaway? Since some of you don't host giveaways maybe you could share how you decide which books to try to win. :-)

I usually have an extra of my Ladies Book Club copies so that I can offer those. I gather inexpensive books for use at Friday Book Pick and also I pick books from my own shelves. At first I selected books that I decided I would not get to read and I could get on Kindle if I wanted to. Lately I have dipped into some of my collections as I would rather share the books then have them on my shelves when I no longer am reading print books very much.

These are three of my bookshelves and there is another shelf upstairs and several boxes still.
I figure I will never get to read them all.

This shelf is in the 'basement' room; some of the boxes are collections. 
I haven't taken time to straighten it in a while.

 The top two shelves are collected books. (Note below them are VCRs we haven't gotten rid of yet.)

For each Know Your Bible provides data on the author and time frame, a ten-word synopsis, a longer (50-100 word) summary, thoughts on what makes the book unique or unusual, a listing of key verses, and a "So, What?" section of practical application. It's a fantastic resource for individuals and ministries! Quotations are in NIV, ASV, and KJV.

Review:
I have studied the Bible and even led a study group on The Bible Through a Year – which took two years to finish. This little booklet provides a great summary for each book. It starts by identifying the author and the date written. The book is encapsulated in 10 words or less, then a detailed paragraph summarizes the book. Key quotes are shared, and a uniqueness of the book. The final section is “So What” which notes why the book is important.

I liked the concise format and I highlighted several pages. This is a great resource for new believers as well as mature believers to keep and use now and again. I recommend this as a wonderful resource tool for those who like to study the Bible.
