Review:
There are four lovely stories here that celebrate love at Christmas time. The stories are connected by a family brooch that was given originally by a man to show his love for his wife.

The first story, Legacy of Love, is set in 1827, Lancashire, England. When the giver of the brooch died, the wife became the Dowager Countess of Densbury The arrogant wife of the eldest grandson had little use for the dowager’s lower class companion, Sarah. When the daughter-in-law took over the main home, she pushed the dowager and Sarah to a smaller property right before Christmas. The third son in the family was particularly close to his grandmother and took the time to visit as they prepared for the holiday. He shares time with Sarah as they take care of the ailing woman. As the grandmother prepares her last Christmas gifts for her staff, she gifts her precious, beloved brooch to Sarah.

In Gift of the Heart, widow Ruth Albright struggles to make a home for herself and her young daughter in 1890 Hope Springs, Texas. Ruth refuses to sell the family broach but instead she approaches her landlord, who owns the local resort and many other properties in town. She asks for a loan with the brooch as collateral. The wealthy businessman has a disability that has kept him set apart from most people. But this brave young woman isn’t fazed by his disability, and he finds great respect for Ruth and her adorable daughter.

Next, in A Shot at Love, the brooch is passed by an Aunt to her tomboy niece, Fleeta. Set in 1958 West Virginia, Fleeta thinks perhaps she can live a life on her own terms by opening a gun shop. She doesn’t plan to marry as she has never met a man who appreciates her independence and who interests her. Then she meets a fellow hunter visiting from the south and her heart changes.

Finally, in the 1980s, the brooch appears in Merryweather, Washington. In Because of You, Maggie has been in love with Leo since college days. But her best friend snagged him first and, even though he is a widow now with a young son, Maggie doesn’t feel she can betray her best friend. Maggie and Leo are assigned to work together for a church Christmas project. While pulling out family ornaments, she discovers a special family brooch. Can the special brooch help Maggie find love as it has the women of her past?

I think my favorites were the first two, but each story is delightful. I really enjoyed how the brooch played a part in each romance and how each romance culminated at Christmas. There is a very lowkey element of faith that added to my enjoyment. I recommend this to anyone needing and uplift of gentle romance at Christmas.

Audio Notes: The four narrators, Pilar Witherspoon, Liz Pearce, Stephanie Cozart, and Emily Pike Stewart, do a wonderful job on the presentation. The voices fit each story. The audio enhanced my enjoyment of these stories.

Review:
Charlotte is unhappy when the school where she works closes down. She has three special students she wants to protect. Even though she has the rights to take the two boys and young girl, she packs them all up at night, so she won’t have to face Lily’s powerful grandfather. She knows that the man will look for her but she hopes that she has hidden her charges and her trail.

Lily’s grandfather hires Stone Hammond, the best tracker in Texas, to find his kidnapped granddaughter. It has taken some heavy tracking, but Stone has finally found the location of the teacher and orphaned girl. Stone expects to find a wicked school marm using the children as slave labor. Instead, he finds a lovely young woman with three happy children and a protective ‘gnome’ handyman. Charlotte claims to have documentation appointing her as the legal guardian for Lily. He plans to stay and watch her movements until he gets confirmation of her claims. He is surprised to observe the talents of the teacher and children as he waits.

Meanwhile, Stone has to wonder if Lily may be in danger and if he has inadvertently led the threat to her doorstep. When another danger begins to stalk Charlotte and Lily, will Stone be able to keep the small ‘family’ safe?

Charlotte is a caring teacher with a beautiful, Christian heart. She is cautious because she has been let down and betrayed in the past. Still, she is ready to offer healing rather than condemnation even to the man who has come to take her precious Lily. Stone is a wonderfully honorable man who has a reputation for getting the job done. But he is willing to protect the innocent when he learns that evil stalks. As he works beside Charlotte, he realizes that her injured heart is ‘a worthy pursuit’.

There are some nice musical elements in the story. There is gentle development of the relationship between the characters. The Christian foundation is shown through the steadfast characters without having to be preached. I appreciated the message acknowledging God’s control and I enjoyed the suspense that added interest to this lovely story. I want to read more by this author. I recommend this story to fans of clean, historical romance with a touch of danger.

Audio Notes: Barbara McCulloh does a wonderful job with the narration. I really enjoyed her tone, voices and delivery. It fit well with the story and enhanced my enjoyment of the work.

Review:
I expected a timely prophesy from this book but received so much more. The author, Ellen G. White, lived from 1827 to 1915. This work is compiled from her original works, Patriarchs and Prophets, The Desire of Ages, and The Great Controversy. The message is timeless, and I have no doubt that the message was remarkable to those who got to hear it from the original works as it is to readers today.

This book is set out in three parts: Parts 1: The Real Story; “As in the Days of Noah…”’ Part 2: The Coming Storm: “As in the Days of Lot”; and Part 3 The Problem of Evil: “As On that Day…” Biblical scripture forms the basis for the thoughts and message shared. What struck me first, and at the end, was the way the author clearly portrays the fallen condition of man in the days of Noah…in her own time… and still today.

The event of the flood is a pivotal Faith foundation for believers. In ten generations from Adam’s expulsion from Paradise, mankind had forgotten to revere and fear the great Creator God. At very least they chose to ignore Him and at worst they deliberately chose to reject Him and disobey His commandments. Only Noah maintained a faithful relationship and followed God’s directives. His family was saved by their relationship under Noah’s spiritual leadership.

As I read the sections on Noah’s solitary obedience and warnings and on Lot’s escape from Sodom and Gomorrah, I had to wonder how I would have reacted. Noah must have seemed like a crazy person talking about rain that had never happened before. I hope I would have responded by the time the animals came two by two. And Lot had to struggle to get his own family out of the wicked cities. He couldn’t save his wife who looked back longingly on the worldly city rather than running away from the evils there. The third section discusses the fall of Lucifer and how the great beauty that God gifted him with fed his own envy then pride and arrogance fueled discontent, malice and hatred. His initial chafing and grumbling under God’s authority grew to justification of disobedience and ultimately full rebellion. “The same spirit that prompted rebellion in heaven still inspires rebellion on earth.” The time will come, and we need to be ready, when God will deliver judgment for the lawlessness of men.

The final chapters speak to the only hope to be found for the sins of men through redemption by faith in Jesus Christ. I found the description of that gift humbling and awesome. Then the book concludes with an amazing description of the glorious second coming of Christ and the new Jerusalem where the faithful redeemed get to dwell for eternity.

This short work renewed my awareness of the need to hold very lightly to the things of earth, and it stirred my heart to keep pressing into obedience to God’s righteousness. It isn’t an easy task with all the wealth and distractions around us, but it is worth the reward at the end. I recommend this to all people --- those who need to hear the message of salvation and those who have accepted but can find renewed vigor in the scriptural message.

“That the Maker of all worlds, the Arbiter of all destinies, should lay aside His glory and humiliate Himself from love to man will ever excite the wonder and adoration of the universe.” Page 120.

Review:
Nouriel was called to be a watchman and give warning in the first book, The Harbinger. He shared his experiences meeting “the prophet” and receiving nine seals that revealed nine harbingers or warnings that appeared on American soil. The warnings involved the events of September 11, 2001 and actions of America that were leading to God’s shaking and potential judgment.

Like the first book, The Harbinger II, presents parallels between God’s covenant with, blessings given and then punishment on His beloved nation of Israel and God’s apparent covenant, blessings and potential punishment on America. This book continues to show similarities between the ancient and modern nations. Nouriel explains, in a fictional story-telling fashion, how he is shown examples of the people of America, like the people of ancient Israel, turning their backs on Godly values and pulling away from God. Moving forward from the shaking warning of 9/11, Nouriel is shown further events reflecting the accelerating disobedience and flouting of Biblical foundations by the people of America, including disintegration and devaluing of the family unit, growing rejection of moral values, and, most damaging, the increasing numbers of abortions in America and support for abortions in other countries.

This zipped by and is fascinating! The author presents one after another connection of dates and events that go far beyond coincidence. He shows a pattern in the founding of Israel that was echoed in the founding of America. And now, the decline (arrogant growing sins) of and resulting punishments on Israel are seen playing out in America. Cahn argues that the rebuilt towers, now the One World Trade Center, is a warning ‘harbinger’ and shows alarming events including the face of the goddess Kali lighting up the side of the Empire State building in 2015. Cahn refers to Biblical passages that speak to God’s grace and multiple warnings including plagues (COVID-19).

The bottom-line themes of Jonathan Cahn’s books are personal salvation (relationship with Christ) and encouraging Americans to follow the call of 2 Chronicles 7:24 which states: “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

I am always impressed by the extent of Biblical historical connection and ‘Godincidences’ (not coincidences) that Cahn shares in his books. This is another fascinating book that my husband and I enjoyed. I was glad to have this as my First Book of 2021.

Audio Notes: Lawrence Richardson does a wonderful job narrating the book. He captures the tentativeness of Nouriel and his amazement at the facts that are revealed. I was struck how on occasion Mr. Richardson sounded like the author and I liked that. My husband and I are glad to have both the audio and print book to follow, research and make notations in.

Review:
Summer convinced her Boston husband to leave the comforts of home and travel west to make a new home for their family. Sadly, her husband and children caught typhoid and died outside a small German, Mennonite community in Kansas. Stranded with nothing, mired in grief and having dismissed God after he failed to grant her prays for healing, Summer feels she has nothing to live for.

Widower Peter lives with his elderly mother-in-law and his son, Thomas, who is currently house bound due to injuries. Peter and Summer reach an agreement that she will tutor Thomas in exchange for food and shelter in the small shack on his farm. Others in the community are fearful of Summer as ‘not one of their kind’ and begin to make trouble for Peter and Summer. After a blizzard destroys the shack and Summer moves into the house, the rumors and resentment increase.

Summer is a sad woman but a dedicated teacher. Thomas appreciates her efforts and slowly, between Thomas’ joy in learning and Peter’s patience, caring, and steadfast faith in God, Summer begins to believe that perhaps there is a future for her after all. Just as plans for her to settle in the community are coming together, Summer gets a letter that changes her plans.

Thomas is devastated to lose a woman he views as a mother and, only when she is leaving does Peter realize how important Summer has become to him and his family. Summer too realizes that she is leaving behind something precious, but she is now listening to God and feels she must follow as he leads. What is God’s plan for all of them?

I thoroughly enjoyed this faith-filled story with the double meaning of Summer’s return. Peter’s character is wonderfully developed as a simple man with practical talents and deep-rooted faith. Thomas is a good character and even the non-English speaking grandmother has an interesting role. I enjoyed learning the fascinating tidbits of the Mennonite Community and early grist mills.

Although the community is faith-based, the author shows how small-minded people can cause hurt even in such a community. We all know that Christians are flawed and fail to live up to the teachings of Christ in one way or another. On the other side of that lesson, the author shows how true faith and love of God can spread from one faithful follower to another.

I am sure I have read and enjoyed this author before but it has been a number of years. I won't wait so long for the next book by Ms. Sawyer. I recommend this sweet story to readers who enjoy historical, Christian romance.

Audio Notes: Barbara Caruso does a great job with the narration. She captures the emotional tones of the characters as well as delivering the accents and German phrasings. The narration enhanced my enjoyment of the story. I am surprised that I didn't see I had come across Ms. Caruso as a narrator in all my readings but I would be glad to listen to more that she narrates.

Review:
I am beyond middle age and much of the humor in this book is relatable! I started smiling on the first page. I was absolutely delighted when reading revealed that the anecdotes are mixed with advice from God’s Word.

There are several suggestion lists. I had the honor to share devotion in early March at my local woman’s club. As part of my short program I shared from this book: 10 Ways You Can Turn Someone’s Life Around (location 210). We all agreed this was a great list that helps to improve our own lives by helping others. Another good list shared is “seven reasons why we should take up the torch of service and put a fire under our feet”.

The author shares wonderful attitude and action advice all woven with sound Biblical foundation. The only drawback I had with the NetGalley version was formatting issues that resulted in excessive hyphenation breaking up words and the easy flow. Hopefully, that is resolved for the released Kindle version. I highly recommend this entertaining and encouraging work to all readers although it's particularly fun and helpful for middle and senior ages.

Review:
Often we wonder how, and if, America fits in End Times. To answer the question Mr. Kinley begins with history. He establishes the importance of prophecy in the Bible. Much of the prophecy has already come true, supporting the reliability of the source. But there is more to come.

The author explores the current state of America by sharing historical detail of Christian roots in its founding. Mr. Kinley then addresses America’s long-time relationship with Israel by discussing the Biblical principle of blessings falling on those who support God’s chosen people, Israel.

There is more historical detail showing the progressive moral decline in especially since God was removed from schools in 1962. Step by step our society has moved away from revering God, to a point of ignoring Him and more recently outright rebellion and rejection of His laws. Soon we can expect to see increased persecution against Christians.

The author spent a long chapter discussing the horrible impact of abortion. The Bible supports the position that life begins at conception (Psalm 139:13-16, Isaiah 44:24, Jeremiah 1:5, Galatians 1:15 and more). So does science. God punished His most beloved chosen people, Israel, for worshipping idols and killing children. Do we really think He will let any other nation get away without punishment for the same sins?

The next question is how close to the end are we? Many people speculate and some (always falsely) set dates. There are some clear signs and seasons, but no one knows the date. This is more reason to be ready and to feel the compulsion to share the gospel with others. The final message is that it doesn’t really matter what role America plays in the end times. What matters is if we are ready and if we are sharing the message of salvation with others.

At times the book seemed to go on and on with a couple of the points. Still, I was impressed by the thoroughness of the arguments and information shared. I highly recommend this to readers who are interested in Biblical prophecy, not just America’s place.

Audio Notes: I enjoyed the narration by Tom Parks. I appreciated that his presentation of the facts and arguments is made with directness and genuine feeling. I am glad that I listened but I ended up buying an extra copy of the book for myself.

Interestingly, my first review draft was 718 words; the second was still 576. It took four drafts to get it under 400.

Review:
The Remnant is the 10th book in the Left Behind series. The series begins with a handful of characters who are left behind when their loved ones disappear with many other Christians. That is when the star characters realize that the Godly messages they were told, but didn’t believe, were true. Many of them gather together establish the Tribulation Force to fight the coming lawlessness and rise of the antichrist.

The Remnant picks up right where the last book, Desecration, left off. The personable and powerful Antichrist, Carpathia, is gleefully about to eliminate the believers at Petra by dropping nuclear bombs on them. The Christian leaders, known as The Believers, are still involved in spreading the message of God’s salvation. They are prepared to die if that is what God has in store for them.

The antichrist team is unaware that there is a Christian spy in the New Babylon headquarters. This one man is able to coordinate aid to the believers who are spread around the world. His inside information may save the lives of many although even he can’t stop a bomb. But someone he knows can -- the supernatural hand of God.

It really has been years since I read the early books in the series. I was pleasantly surprised how quickly the characters and plot were brought back to my mind. I like the action that is a large part of the story. There were scene shifts, for example from Jordan to Chicago, which are only distinguished by the change in characters. I had to get used to recognizing those changes. This would be more difficult to follow for anyone not familiar with the series, but I would recommend this to those who have read the series.

Audio Notes: Jack Sondericker does a fine job with the narration. He provides distinct voices for the characters. This version was abridged and there were occasional moments in the presentation that seemed to jump from one scene to another which I suspect were portions of the longer story bypassed. That did not hurt the story for me. I was fine listening to the abridged audio.

Review:
Renee is a young woman who was raised in a family strongly grounded in faith. This doesn’t protect her from physical desires and emotional upheaval.

Gabe was raised under the tyranny of an abusive father who filled Gabe with negative self-views. Gabe is only able to find approval when he discovers he has the ability to put on a face that is praised by his church group. Gabe is able to hold that mask even though his youth pastor questions if his supposed ‘calling’ is real. His biggest problem, other than living behind a mask, is controlling his raging temper.

Renee and Gabe meet on college campus and quickly are enthralled with each other. Their relationship leads to unexpected consequences and, sooner than planned, marriage. Although they love each other they have a great capacity to hurt each other and find their love traveling into hate and resentment. This emotional roller coaster continues for years. Finally they get help from a caring, Godly couple, and agree to separate to seek self-healing so they, hopefully, can heal their marriage. Even with that, they end a short vacation with arguing and silence while driving home through a snowstorm.

The story telling is interesting as it flows from present to past events following both characters. Peppered through the story are diary entries sharing the pain of an estranged marriage. The story reveals real life struggles that face even Christ followers. Issues are shared with strong faith while the chapters begin with paired quotes from secular works and the Bible. Although there were some wonderful, meaningful phrases, I found the fractious relationship to be sad, tiring and a bit drawn out.

One of the genre listings at Amazon is "psychological thriller" which I think is misleading. This may be considered psychological fiction but I would call it family drama. I have to admit that this isn’t my favorite genre or style of reading. I much prefer adventure and entertainment over emotional trauma. The ladies in my ladies’ book club had mixed reactions too. Several loved it while a couple of us said… ‘okay – it wasn’t my style’. If you read for entertainment, this might not be a book for you. However, if you enjoy a faith based story that shares real life emotional turmoil, this is one you should want to pick up.

I bought the print book several years ago and picked up the Kindle version in April to read for our April Ladies Book Club meeting. I’m going to count this toward 2019TBR goal.

January Breeze
Willow is a noticeable addition to The Coach House Trailer Park. Most of the residents are living there for the end of their life journey. But Willow sweeps in, transforming her cottage, which she dubs Elderberry Croft, with flowers and brightness. Some of the other residents wonder what she’s up to, almost resenting her energy and creativeness and even question if she has some witchy aspects.

One of the neighbors, Kathy, is a grumpy woman with two dogs and a negative attitude. Willow brings her homemade biscuits for the dogs and then a basket of elderberry goodies for Kathy. Can Willow’s generous, bright sharing help Kathy find a new attitude?

February Embers
Another park unit is occupied by Patti and her invalid husband Richard. Patti has been a dedicated caretaker but the years are weighing on her. Each day she helps Richard into his chair on the front porch where he watches the vibrant Willow as she gardens in her yard or travels the street delivering gifts. Patti is frustrated by Richard’s attention on Willow and lack of appreciation for Patti. They are encouraging their son, Ivan, to show an interest in lovely Willow. Ivan and Willow bring a sweet Valentine surprise and chance for rekindled love to Patti and Richard.

March Whispers
Joe Sanderson is living his elder years apparently alone and in quiet simplicity in the park. He does have a lady friend, Vivian, who visits providing gossip fodder for others in the park. Joe likes to garden outside and watches Willow as she too gardens or as she visits others. In spite of her bright appearance, Joe has noticed sorrow in Willow’s eyes. He knows a thing or two about secrets and he suspects that Willow is hiding secrets of her own. Willow visits Joe to share scones and coffee. Perhaps they can find a way to share some of their secrets and provide comfort for each other too.

Willow is a charming, lively character who spreads life among her neighbors. Ms. Doughty presents a positive, uplifting event in each story. The writing flows smoothly and naturally providing a light, easy read. I am thinking about getting the full collection with stories continuing for other months. I recommend this to readers who enjoy community and uplifting stories.

Review:
Most of us are familiar with Dickens story of Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. Now we have the story of Scrooge’s mentor and partner, Jacob T. Marley. Of course, Marley appears as a ghost in A Christmas Carol. In this story the author shares the background that creates the character of Marley. He develops the history of Marley meeting and becoming partners with Scrooge. And he presents Marley as a ghost/spirit seeking to help Scrooge before it's too late.

I wasn’t quite sure on this but I really enjoyed it. The style is consistent with Dickens, including issues of the human condition, so it carries along well from Scrooge’s story. Themes of remorse and redemption are well presented. I recommend this to those who enjoy the original classic.

Audio Notes: This was superbly narrated by the veteran narrator, Simon Vance. His expert voicing and narration adds extra richness to the story. This is wonderful listening entertainment and a real bargain at the deal price!

Review:
Noelle has come home with her young son, Lucas, after being laid off from her city job. She is ready to take over the family bakery, Hope and Sugar Bakery, as she promised her beloved grandmother. Unfortunately, Noelle is told by her family that the bakery is in financial difficulty and they can’t even give her a paying position.

Instead, she takes a job to help as a caregiver to a wealthy man who is losing his sight. The senior Mr. Harrington, William, isn’t initially thrilled that his handsome grandson, Alexander, has hired Noelle. Noelle’s family isn’t happy about the job either as they are claiming that Alexander Harrington, as the store landlord, has raised the building rent and has plans to move in a newer business.

Noelle and Lucas move into a suite in the huge mansion. Alexander is kind to Lucas, remembering how important it was for him as a young boy to have someone pay attention. He and Noelle develop a friendship too but they are both reluctant to allow feelings to grow. Alex is planning to move to New York to pursue his business. Noelle is focused on protecting herself and her son while struggling to save the bakery. Alex is estranged from his cantankerous grandfather, William Harrington, and Noelle wants to find a way to bring them together before Christmas.

Of course, the plot is a perfect situation in the style of a Hallmark Christmas romance. Sadly, Noelle’s character made me a bit nuts. She jumps to conclusions without getting facts and then she rushes off with inaccurate assumptions. Alex is a lovely character with more depth than expected. And of course, Lucas and William add more cuteness and conflict.

The writing is easy, almost simplistic. The romance is sweet but I felt it had a strange combination of forced and rushed. Through my frustration, I still enjoyed the light entertainment and overall story. I recommend this to fans of Hallmark Christmas style romance.

Audio Notes: Helene Maksoud did a nice job with the narration. She shares the feel of the story: melancholy, frustrated, nostalgic and sometimes wondrous. I am glad that I listened to the story.

Review:
This memoir/inspirational work started out rather difficult to read (listen to). Cami, the author, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and at age 35 she was struggling with fatigue, weakness, consistent pain and severe depression. This impacted her life as well as tired out her caregivers, her husband and mother.

Cami met with an African healing woman for massage and mental therapy. This friend (she was more than a healer) shared the unique prescription of spending 29 days in a row giving gifts to others. Cami’s friend explained that the gifts did not have to be big or expensive but did have to be given with meaning and intent. The purpose was to focus on giving but it had a surprising effect on opening Cami to receiving gifts too. Cami was so impressed with the changes in her life that she established a blog to share the story and prescription with others.

Cami does a good job sharing her 29 Gift experience with honesty and charm. The change in her attitude was a relief and pleasure to listen to. I can appreciate the difficulties for the caregivers as I experienced some of the meanspirited elements when my husband was on medication recovering from his heart valve operation. (You would think the patient would show more sorrow for bad behaviors and gratitude for the care, but they don't seem to recognize that.) The end of this audio includes short descriptions from others who shared on the blog/webpage. Since I am a strong Christ follower, I wasn't totally comfortable with some the occult 'dabblings' the author shares.

I like to think I have a pretty giving nature to begin with. I am not sure I will do the 29 day exercise, but this has made me more mindful to give unexpected gifts to friends and strangers. I love the idea of unexpected kindnesses! I would certainly recommend this to anyone who is suffering with stress and depression as I do think it would help turn the focus to more positive ground.

Audio Notes: Tavia Gilbert did a fine job with the narration. She captured the distress in the beginning and the relief as the journey progressed. I didn't realize that I had just listened to a fiction title by Tavia (Zoe's Tale) until I started to include my audio notes here. The works are totally different but she did well on both of them. I am glad that I picked this up at a bargain price and I enjoyed the listen.

Review:
Ryan is a young businessman ready to step in to help his father’s finance business. Although Ryan is eager and has graduated with an MBA, his father senses that something is missing. His father recognizes that he has spent so much time building his business that he hasn’t spent enough time with his son. He sends Ryan to his uncle’s Montana ranch where he can get hands on lessons in life.

Ryan is surprised and not quite ready to get up with the break of dawn. But as Ryan helps his uncle build a barn and help in the community he learns how to become a compassionate nephew, friend, community member and even potential husband. The basis of the lessons about health, work, finances, education, selfessness, humility, and love are built on Biblical foundations. And Ryan is challenged to accept the most precious gift of all.

I enjoyed the wonderful wisdom for living “a good life” with purpose which is shared in this novella. It is an easy read and shows that life isn’t all roses and smooth paths. There are questions and decisions to be made. It is important to have the right foundation and look to the right resources for advise to help make the right decisions. I recommend this to anyone who seeks to learn how to live a full life that is rich in more than money.

Claire is a single mother raising her 11-year-old daughter, Haley. Claire is busy as a teacher and working, one project at a time, on her fixer-upper home. Claire has been burned by the men in her past and doesn’t have time for romance. Claire takes time to help her mature neighbor, Dr. Maureen Chandler, who has had a recent bout with cancer surgery. Haley overhears a confidential conversation between Claire and Maureen. Unknown to anyone else, Haley writes a letter to a private foundation asking them to help Maureen find her long lost son.

Keith Watson is a workaholic serving as the executive assistant to a former workaholic, David. The business includes a philanthropic division which answers written requests submitted by strangers. David is struggling to rebuild a relationship with his estranged daughter. He recognizes the importance of balancing career and family. Keith plans to pass on Haley’s letter but David assigns it to Keith hoping it will get him out of the office. David doesn’t have any idea how the assignment may impact Keith who has his own childhood trauma baggage.

The simple, kind hearted act of a young person sets off a chain of events that blossoms into love for two couples. The romantic chemistry is portrayed without the need for sexual scenes. There are lessons of forgiveness and second chances. Some of the characters have a closer walk of faith but others realize they need to renew their faith. Ms. Hannon develops all of the characters and the story allows them to grow beautifully.

The writing moves smoothly with a story that has a lot of natural life scenes and some twists that keep it interesting. I read and enjoyed Ms. Hannon’s romantic suspense (Fatal Judgment) and have been planning to read more. I was curious when I saw the author also writes contemporary romance and I am glad I shared this with my ladies’ book club. The story is uplifting, and the ladies enjoyed the richness. I recommend this to readers who enjoy clean, small town romance with quiet faith elements.

Review:
I found this audiobook exciting to listen to. Of course, I am a person who loves words. I especially love positive and encouraging words. This work shares eleven strong words that follow a journey of growth by the author. There are really more words than the primary eleven, (dubbed "core" words) because the author expands with root words and derivatives that run off on rabbit trails – wonderful side trips.

The claims of the blurb may be a bit grandiose as I don’t think it takes a secret word to lead to success. Still the words come with strong, positive and powerful messages that can improve a life with their positive approach. They are inspiring in their power and description. This work might be good in print as it sounded like it comes with workbook pages to expand the words and share them with others.

These are words that can enhance a journey of growth for any listener (reader) who is interested in pursing the path. Although I may not implement the words in a journal, I thoroughly enjoyed them and learning how they impacted the author’s life. This is a book I think I would listen to more than once or twice. I recommend this to readers who enjoy learning about words and the impact they can have.

Audio Notes: Patrick Lawlor does a good job with the narration. His voice is clear and shares the excitement of the author. I enjoyed the listening experience.

Review:
This is a business guide, cheer-leading sort of book. The advice is similar to setting goals but really more fundamental. If we all found our “Why” we would choose work we love to do and not just find a job to make money. On a corporate level, the author explains the importance of knowing the “Why” for the business and then making certain all employees, from top CEO to lowest mailroom clerk, understand and support the “Why”. This should be in mind when interviewing and hiring so that the right person is selected for the job.

Sinek gives good examples of companies who succeeded by knowing and keeping their “Why” in focus. He also shared examples of companies that had money and leaders but failed for lack of a defined “Why”. There are also examples of companies that lost their “Why” along the way, either by trying products or marketing that didn’t fit or by losing a leader who embodied the “Why” but the successor leader did not.

There is redundancy in the material and this could have been condensed to a better presentation. As interesting as this book is, I struggled a little in applying it to a smaller company such as my own. Sinek finally acknowledged about 4/5ths in that the concept of The Golden Circle may work better for larger companies. Still, the idea of working out of passion (the “Why”) instead of just for money, makes good sense and would seem to foster better success. It is possible that this would be better in print as the reader could go back as a resource more easily than with an audiobook. I recommend this to anyone interested in being inspired to find and start with “Why”.

Audio Notes: It is often interesting when an author narrates their own book. Sinek does a good job, clearly knowing and having enthusiasm for the material. I was glad to listen as it was effective use of driving time.

Review:
I have studied the Bible and even led a study group on The Bible Through a Year – which took two years to finish. This little booklet provides a great summary for each book. It starts by identifying the author and the date written. The book is encapsulated in 10 words or less, then a detailed paragraph summarizes the book. Key quotes are shared, and a uniqueness of the book. The final section is “So What” which notes why the book is important.

I liked the concise format and I highlighted several pages. This is a great resource for new believers as well as mature believers to keep and use now and again. I recommend this as a wonderful resource tool for those who like to study the Bible.

Review:
Sol Harkens makes a living as a bold, brash Athiest. He not only enjoys his debates he enjoys annihilating and humiliating his Christian opponents with mocking and derision. He struts for the TV to promote his anti-God books. He lives large partying with the publicists and escorting model girlfriends. And when he’s not partying in public, he’s drowning his grief at home with alcohol and opioids.

Sol lost his first born son to a rare illness and has resented God ever since. He is estranged from his ex-wife who is a believer and his two younger sons who are being raised with her faith. They can rarely find common ground.

Driving drunk after a party, Sol is in a near death car crash. While clinically dead, Sol encounters his dead son who entreats him; “Daddy, let there be light.” Now Sol must face the biggest conflict and decision of his life. If he admits he had a vision in death, he could lose his entire career and reputation. But what could happen if he doesn’t admit it? And what did his beloved son mean by the cryptic message?

As I started reading this I felt there were similarities with God’s Not Dead, which my husband and I had just watched the week before. (Not a coincidence for me but rather a God incidence.) When I picked this book in my December NetGalley selections I didn’t realize it was a movie. Kevin Sorbo is the star of both movies and the director of Let There be Light. The storyline was the dream child of his wife, Sam Sorbo.

There is an interesting forward telling how the story and movie came about. The story is written for an “everyman” audience and not as a literary classic. There were scenes that made me cringe at the crude, self-destructive life style of the main character. But this set the scene for the faith revelations and the contrastingly strong faith foundation of his ex-wife and sons. I liked Pastor Vinny’s character and the hope message that is shared. I found this entertaining and recommend it to readers who enjoy faith based fiction…and especially those who support the message: Let there be light!

Review:
Carol accepts an invitation from Kinsman, a Christian foundation that helps people who are willing to help themselves and change their lives. Carol lost her parents when she was only a teen and has worked hard to raise her younger brother. Now Kinsman has offered a chance for her to fulfill a few dreams of her own.

Carol is beginning a charming friendship with a widower connected with the Kinsman project. But even that friendship won’t stand in the way when Carol’s heart is touched by a special message shared at church. A young woman shares the trauma of girls trapped into prostitution, sold by family or kidnapped and caged to be used as sex slaves with no hope of release. Carol hasn’t told anyone about the cry for help she has been hearing. Now she knows that she is being called to help the women in this situation.

Kinsman helps Carol travel to a foreign country to meet with leaders of an organization that rescues young women. There Carol meets a young woman and is determined to change her live provided they escape the dangers around them.

I found this story lovely as well as informative. I really liked the personal way the authors shared the heart wrenching situation. The authors also share Biblical messages in very natural settings and dialogue. I was fully engaged, and this read very quickly.

Although this has a beautiful holiday cover and is listed under "Holiday", it can be read and enjoyed anytime of the year. I recommend this story to readers who might want to know about female trafficking and who enjoy Biblically based stories.
