Audio Book Review: Snowbound at Christmas by Jennifer Ryan, Maisey Yates, Lia Riley

The first story was fine but the other two were a little too sexy for my tastes.
Snowbound at Christmas

Date: November 2016
Duration: 7 hours 56 minutes
Publisher: HarperAudio
Genre: Christmas, Holiday Romance
My Rating: 3.25 of 5.0 Overall; Story 3.25; Narration 3.25.

When a snowstorm pummels the western half of the country, three couples find once off-limits love just in time for Christmas. An unforgettable holiday anthology from bestselling authors Jennifer Ryan, Maisey Yates, and Lia Riley.
Close to Perfect: A Montana Men Novella by Jennifer Ryan
At sixteen, Abigail gave Dex the gift of a lifetime, but the cost of it was more than he ever knew. Now she's back in town with a secret that has been ten years in the making and this time it's Dex's turn to make the ultimate sacrifice or risk losing her forever.

Snowed in at Copper Ridge: A Copper Ridge Novella by Maisey Yates
Mia Landry has always had it bad for brooding cowboy Devlin Grayson. Too bad he's her best friend's older brother. But when they find themselves snowed in at Copper Ridge Lodge, Mia finally has the chance to tell the man of her dreams exactly what she wants... him.

Hot Winter's Night: A Brightwater Novella by Lia Riley
While Brightwater is being covered in snow, Goldie Flint is stuck in her flower shop. She never expected her hero to be Kit Kane, the former love of her life. Kit knows that what he had with Goldie isn't just in the past and with the help of a little bet, an ornery grandmother, and a lot of snow, he's ready to show her that what he really wants for Christmas is a second chance.

Review:
These are three different Christmas romance stories that deal with snowbound characters. I enjoyed Close to Perfect but the other two not so much. My rating overall 3.25 of 5.0.

Close to Perfect: A Montana Men Novella by Jennifer Ryan My rating 4.0.
I enjoyed the story of Dex and Abigail who were teen sweethearts separated by actions of Abigail’s oppressive father. It was a sweet story bringing them back together so they could learn what kept them apart. More importantly they could find their way to a future as a family.

Snowed in at Copper Ridge: A Copper Ridge Novella by Maisey Yates My rating 3.0.
Dev has a reputation as a ‘bad boy’ cowboy who has had to resist his attraction to his younger sister’s best friend. Mia has always had a bit of a crush on Dev but she has had negative physical reactions to men that no one knows about, not even Dev’s sister. When the two find themselves stranded they discover their attraction is too hard to resist. And to Mia’s delight she doesn’t have a negative reaction to Dev’s touch.

Mia seems more like an awkward teen than an mid-twentys young woman. Dev sounded like a man led by his sexual desires who had little emotional thought for his conquests. There was a strong focus on their sexual attraction and interaction and the language was ugly. Just not my cup of tea.

Hot Winter's Night: A Brightwater Novella by Lia Riley My rating 3.0.
Goldie gets stuck in a snowstorm and gets rescued by her old and fiery flame, Kit. Kit takes her to her house only to discover it flooded. Then he takes her home where the large family sends them off to a room in the attic. Kit and Goldie discover there is a bet online on how many days they will last before ‘killing each other’. They decide to take advantage of the betting to win some money to help Goldie’s damaged shop and home. To win they will stay cozied up until Christmas day. Again, this was a little too much focused on sexual attraction and interaction for my comfort. It pulled my interest away from the story and I wanted it to finish. Others might enjoy the sexually oriented stories but this combination wasn’t for me.

Audio Notes: I enjoyed the first narration. The voices fit and conveyed the distress and regret of the characters. The other two I have little recollection of as a I was so turned off by the language and sex.

Book Review: Miss Kane's Christmas by Caroline Mickelson

This is a cute, light romance with Christmas magic.

My Rating: 4.0 of 5.0.

With Christmas only three days away, Carol Claus agrees to her father's request that she leave the North Pole on a mission to help save Christmas. Joining single father Ben Hanson and his children for the holidays seems an easy enough task until Santa informs her that Ben is the man behind the disturbing new book 'Beyond Bah Humbug: Why Lying to Your Children about Santa Claus is a Bad Idea'.
Posing as Miss Kane, the children's new nanny, Carol pulls out all the stops to show Ben how fun Christmas can be, all the while struggling to understand how one man could hate the holidays so much. How could she, Santa's only daughter, be so attracted to a man who refuses to believe her father exists?

Review:
Santa Claus asks his daughter Carol to handle a mission to save Christmas. A single father, Ben Hanson, is about to submit for publication a book that calls Santa a lie and a hoax. Carol, aka Miss Kane, is dropped at the man’s door to serve as the new nanny for his two children.

Ben lost his wife and the children their mother several years before when she died of illness. Ben did tell the full truth to his children about their mother, but he froze his feelings and has shared no happiness since her death. The children, Hillary age eight and Patrick age x have grown accustomed to a household with little fun and no laughter, but they long for more. They are thrilled when Miss Kane arrives bringing a burst of Christmas enthusiasm and joy with her.

Ben is set on sending Miss Kane away the morning after her arrival but circumstances require that she stay a few days. It is just three days before Christmas and Carol is intent on bringing the Christmas spirit into the Hanson home before she returns to the North Pole. As she grows closer to the family, she fears first that she will fail to win Ben over even with a little Christmas magic, and second that she may not be able to return to her own home without great sorrow.

This is a cute little story that is the stuff of Hallmark movies. Carol overflows Christmas joy and the children are ready to soak it in. Ben is a reluctant participant in the holiday festivities, but it would be hard for anyone to resist Carol’s enthusiastic spirit. This is an easy, quick read. I recommend this to fans of light Christmas romance.

Western romance holiday 5 minute quick read.
This very short story is offered as a sample of the author's work.
If you enjoy this, you might also like Nita Wick's award-winning historical western romance, The Wagonmaster.

Review:
Opening line: “You’re standing under the mistletoe.” Rebekah/Becky is surprised when she is confronted by the new town sheriff, Colton. He insists that she owes him a kiss. Even her brothers and parents don’t scare him off. Why is he pushing so hard for a kiss? Will she give in? and then what?

This is a very short and sweet, historical almost romance – really just an introduction to a possible romance. I liked the setting and brief character development. It gives just a taste of the author’s writing and I liked it. I would read more historical romance by Ms. Wick. I recommend this as a five-minute holiday read to those who enjoy historical romance.

A stormy encounter...
Samantha DeMartino's Christmas wedding is two weeks away when her fiancĂ© calls the whole thing off. Word on the street: his cold feet are being heated by an old flame. With her well-ordered world in complete disarray, Sam's friends convince her to go on her honeymoon—alone. A week at a charming Vermont inn away from the city and her demanding corporate career could be just what she needs to figure out her next steps.
Between his twenty-four seven work schedule on his family's dairy farm and teaching tourists to ski, Jed Armstrong's too busy to think about how lonely he is...until Sam sings her way into his life during a Christmas blizzard. Now he has to figure out a way to convince her to stay.
Can a vivacious city girl find forever with a reclusive farmer?
Will her secret keep her from trying?

Review:
Samantha’s friends convince her that she needs to take her ‘wedding’ trip as a break away after her fiancĂ© cancels their wedding. Her week in Vermont starts with her car breaking down in a snowstorm, leaving her to be rescued by a local dairy farmer. Samantha is skeptical of her quick attraction to this stranger and finds herself being pulled along as she discovers he is her ski instructor.

Jed has a full work schedule on his family’s dairy farm and taking turns as a ski instructor. He had set aside his own personal life after a set back from a prior romance and an unexpected death in his family. Now he has found a snow angel by the side of the road. How can he convince her to give him/them a chance?

The cover is an immediate draw and the story set-up sounds like a Hallmark romance scenario … and it is. The very likeable primary characters are well developed with natural relationship fears and a conflict that will require strengths to take a chance. I enjoyed the local Inn desk manager who nudges Sam towards a relationship with Jed and the local pub owner who gives Sam the evil challenge eye.

The descriptions and dialogue are clean, crisp and engaging. I found this to be a quick, easy, feel good read. This would be a perfect holiday read but it is a nice warm romance for anytime. I recommend this to readers who enjoy light, clean, easy romance.

Christmas is coming, and Catherine Woodsleigh and her crippled brother John have no hope of celebration until an invitation to spend Christmas with an old friend and her family arrives. But after the holiday, worse misfortune looms before them. Living on the diminishing number of coins drawn from a jar left by their dead father and mother, a dire future seems inevitable. Will this chance to share a wondrous sparkling Christmas not only provide a glorious holiday but a new turn in their futures and the astonishing possibility of romance?

Review:
Catherine has been working as a seamstress and pinching pennies to take care of herself and her crippled brother, John. Most families would hide John or put him in a home. But Catherine knows that John is smart and would be able to work as a clerk or similar position if people didn’t look and see only his disability.

Catherine is excited when she receives an invitation from a school friend, Katie, for John and her to visit for Christmas. Catherine knows that she will have trouble meeting bills, even rent, after Christmas. But Christmas is the time for miracles and maybe this is a chance to change her circumstances.

Catherine and John are met at the station by Katie’s older brother, the Viscount de Montjoy. Montjoy is attractive and charming although Katie claims he is a big flirt. Catherine enjoys his company and watches for a chance to ask him to help her brother. When she finally finds the courage, things don’t go quite as expected.

Ms. Harrison does a nice job handling John’s injury and the callous way that many families and society treat someone with disability and disfigurement. Catherine is a lovely example of a caring sister who sees the strengths in her brother and wants to encourage him. The author manages to allow Montjoy to remain a bit mysterious, creating conflict until well into the story.

The story is quick and sweet; a nice, light Christmas read. I recommend this to fans of Christmas and sweet historical romance.

Review:
Noelle has come home with her young son, Lucas, after being laid off from her city job. She is ready to take over the family bakery, Hope and Sugar Bakery, as she promised her beloved grandmother. Unfortunately, Noelle is told by her family that the bakery is in financial difficulty and they can’t even give her a paying position.

Instead, she takes a job to help as a caregiver to a wealthy man who is losing his sight. The senior Mr. Harrington, William, isn’t initially thrilled that his handsome grandson, Alexander, has hired Noelle. Noelle’s family isn’t happy about the job either as they are claiming that Alexander Harrington, as the store landlord, has raised the building rent and has plans to move in a newer business.

Noelle and Lucas move into a suite in the huge mansion. Alexander is kind to Lucas, remembering how important it was for him as a young boy to have someone pay attention. He and Noelle develop a friendship too but they are both reluctant to allow feelings to grow. Alex is planning to move to New York to pursue his business. Noelle is focused on protecting herself and her son while struggling to save the bakery. Alex is estranged from his cantankerous grandfather, William Harrington, and Noelle wants to find a way to bring them together before Christmas.

Of course, the plot is a perfect situation in the style of a Hallmark Christmas romance. Sadly, Noelle’s character made me a bit nuts. She jumps to conclusions without getting facts and then she rushes off with inaccurate assumptions. Alex is a lovely character with more depth than expected. And of course, Lucas and William add more cuteness and conflict.

The writing is easy, almost simplistic. The romance is sweet but I felt it had a strange combination of forced and rushed. Through my frustration, I still enjoyed the light entertainment and overall story. I recommend this to fans of Hallmark Christmas style romance.

Audio Notes: Helene Maksoud did a nice job with the narration. She shares the feel of the story: melancholy, frustrated, nostalgic and sometimes wondrous. I am glad that I listened to the story.

Bridget Higgins hasn't allowed herself to think too much about fairytales or the magic of Christmas since her dad died. Her life has been dedicated to work, her mom, her best friend Ivy, and little else. But when her kind and gorgeous boss, who she's secretly harbored a crush on for the last three years, offers her a night of fun on top of an unexpected Christmas bonus from work, Bridget starts to remember what it feels like to believe in magic and fairytales once more.
Mistletoe Kiss is a 20,000-word contemporary romance

Review:
Bridget has struggled coping first with the death of her father and then helping her mother recover from a heart attack. She loves her work and isn’t concerned about spending long hours since she has little inclination to be with anyone other than her mother and best friend, Ivy.

Bridget has had a crush on her boss, David, but has tried to ignore her feelings since they work together and it would be improper. She is surprised when she is not given her Christmas bonus check but instead is summoned to David’s office. She gets a bigger surprise when he invites her to an elegant night out.

Bridget agrees to go and begins to discover Christmas magic as she experiences a Cinderella, enchanted evening of dinner and dancing with David. But how can things between them change as long as he is her boss?

Bridget is strong and sensitive and doesn’t realize how lovely she is. David is British, handsome, a gentleman and a good boss. There is not great conflict in the story – other than Bridget getting beyond her grief and insecurities. The work situation is the big obstacle and I liked how the author resolved that situation.

The writing and editing was cleaner than a lot of ARCs I have read lately. The Mistletoe Kiss has an extra meaning which is fun. This is a quick, easy read with pleasant characters. It was a good introduction to the author and I would be glad to read more stories by her.

I received this ARC from the author through #hohohorat and was pleased to read it as one of my Readathon titles.

The beloved author of the Mystic Creek series gifts readers with a novel of homespun holiday cheer, as two families discover the joy of hope and redemption....
Widow Maddie McLendon has uprooted her life to move to Rustlers Gulch with her son and grandson. But as a brutal Montana winter looms on the horizon, contractors have yet to break ground on their new house, leaving them to live in a makeshift camp of trailers, tents, and sheds....
Since his wife died six years ago, millionaire rancher Sam Conacher has been content to wallow in his grief alone while keeping a tight rein on his twenty-six-year-old daughter. But now the girl has gone and fallen in love with his foolish new neighbor’s no-good son....
Maddie and Sam will never see eye to eye on anything, until a near-tragedy gives them a true glimpse into each other’s souls. And as the first snowflakes begin to fall, they’ll discover that an open heart is the biggest gift of all....

Review:
Maddie, a famous mystery author, her thirty-five year old son, Cam, and sixteen year old grandson, Caleb, are living in a motor trailer and a ‘camp’ of sheds and tents while they wait for their homes to be built on their property. Their grouchy neighbor, Sam Conacher, has nothing but abusive comments to make about the ‘trashy’ neighbors. Then again, Sam hasn’t had much good to say about anything or anyone since his wife died several years past. He has ostracized friends and employees so that he no longer has enough help to properly manage his ranch. Sam’s twenty-six year old daughter, Kristin, helps to manage the farm, and she is stuck close to home as Sam frightens away any possible suitor by shredding the reputation of the man.

Kristin sees Cam at a local pub and invites him to sit with her. They start a nice rapport before Cam realizes who she is. Cam is trying to build a new real estate business in the area and his career and family are at risk. Cam tries to step away but the draw between Kristin and Cam keeps pulling them together.

When Sam learns that Kristin has been sneaky out to see the 'hillbilly', no good neighbor, Sam arrives at the trailer to confront Cam. Instead he ends up facing a fierce mother, Maddie, who isn't about to let a narrow minder, curmudgeon speak badly of her family. Their next encounters don’t go much better. It takes a rescue and accident to change the dynamics but that doesn’t mean things will run smooth.

There is plenty of conflict balance with nice, warm family connection. I was saddened by the long train of deception that was practiced in a misguided sense of care. On the other hand, I appreciated the turn around that moves those who suffered loss to a point where they could trust and love again. The Christmas Room itself was a lovely surprise and brought the story to a warm conclusion. There is a gentle measure of faith and a big dose of love that pulls the characters together. This was a nice flowing romance and the second romance is a bonus. I recommend this to readers who enjoy second chance at love romances.

Book Description
Publication Date: September 25, 2012
Dear Reader,
I've been wishing for a miracle for my oldest boy, Stone, and this Christmas my prayers might just be answered!
Her name is Lark, and she's here in Last Chance, looking into her father's past-and stirring up a whole mess of trouble without meaning to. As the chief of police, Stone sure has his hands full trying to keep up with her. Ever since his wife died, Stone's put everything into raising his daughters and dodging the Christ Church Ladies' Auxiliary matchmakers. And it's clear Lark has been through some trouble and could use a place to finally call home. I only hope Stone can let go of the past soon enough to keep her . . .
Goodness, I need to stop talking and finish up Jane's highlights so we can make the town tree-lighting. You come back by because the Cut 'n' Curl's got hot rollers, free coffee, fresh-baked Christmas cookies-and the best gossip in town.
See you real soon,
Ruby Rhodes

Review:
Lark is an intense, war-experienced photo-journalists. She nursed her father during his last few days during which he asked her to spread his ashes on the eighteenth hole of Golfing for God mini golf in Last Chance. Lark is trying to fulfill her father’s last wish and she hopes to get a little down time from her last traumatic assignment. Her father had only been in the town for a short time but he had created a racial stir in 1968 by taking a black woman into the local, white diner.

Some people in town believe Lark’s father murdered the grandfather of the current chief of police, Stone Rhodes. Many in town don’t want Lark stirring up memories of the racially charged time.  Stone’s stubborn father is one of those and Stone’s first inclination is to get Lark to leave town. He has enough trouble raising his daughters, while still clinging to the memory and loss of his wife. His eight year old daughter claims to see a weeping angel whom she wants to help find a way back to heaven and his fifteen year old is developing a friendship with a Jewish boy whose parents want to keep her away.

But Lark is set on getting permission to spread her father’s ashes even if it means pushing reluctant people to share their memories.  Then a local black man goes missing and is discovered killed.  At the same time someone is attacking and harassing Lark.  Stone begins to feel protective towards Lark and then he begins to feel emotions he has buried for years. Can Lark share her fears and emotions and will Stone recognize that he can have a second love before they lose the chance?

This story flew by as an easy, fun read. Lark and Stone are strong but troubled souls who need warmth, sharing and love but hold themselves apart. Ms. Ramsay does a good job of noting that issues of racial hatred and bigotry still exist today.  She also reveals similarities in Jewish Hanukkah and Christmas traditions, especially how the hope and joy of the season brings light in a dark world.And then there is the touch of angels for those willing to believe...

There is intrigue and fun in this story. I felt there were several loose ends but I still completely enjoyed the read.  I recommend this series to those who like family-centered romance with some quirky family members, strong, yet vulnerable characters, and a bit of spice with lots of warmth.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lark makes an interesting observation about the church ladies:
The only community she knew about was the brotherhood that existed among the soldiers in the field.. But in a way, Semper Fi applied as much to the ladies of the auxilary as it did to the marines she knew. These women were always faithful. And when bad things happened, they closed ranks and took care of their own.  Location  3429.
The Christmas Eve Bride by Lynne Graham
A Marriage Proposal for Christmas by Carole Mortimer
A Bride for Christmas by Marion Lennox
Review:
Each of these lovely stories includes a single mother with a sweet child and a rich bachelor who decides he wants 'the whole family' for Christmas.
The Christmas Eve Bride by Lynne Graham
Rocco thought he was done with Amber after her betrayal two years earlier. But when he unexpectedly runs into her, the attraction is still strong—so he asks her to become his mistress! Amber only accepts so her baby boy can have a better Christmas. But Rocco's plan for revenge changes as he begins picturing a future with Amber…and their son.
Amber is working as a gardener on an estate so she can that she can  live in a gatehouse with her young son.  This allows her to be outside of her sister’s home. although she still receives help and shares child care duties with her sister and brother-in-law who live nearby.
One day Amber is confronted in the garden by her old lover, Rocco. Amber was a young innocent working girl when they met.  She was swept off her feet by his gifts and jet-setting lifestyle. But Rocco felt betrayed and dumped her when he believed that she disclosed details of their affair to a news reporter.
Rocco doesn’t understand why Amber is working as a servant but, even as he suspects her of some treachery, he is drawn to her and wants her again. He finally convinces her to come to him but when she arrives he is surprised to discover she has a son. Can Rocco accept the child or will he put them both out?
The writing in this flows well and the attraction is strong and sensual. It was difficult to feel Amber’s struggle with low esteem. I enjoyed both characters and the plot as it developed. Individual rating 4.5.
A Marriage Proposal for Christmas by Carole Mortimer
Cally Turner thinks Noel Carlton is an egotistical playboy! The only reason she's agreed to work for him is so she can give her daughter a Christmas to remember. But as she spends more time with Noel, she begins to wonder what's more irritating—his infuriating arrogance or unexpected tenderness?
Cally, an excitable, red-head, has been doing fine as an abandoned, single mom living in an estate carriage house with her 7 year old daughter. Cally and her sister are working together to build their event planning business and are particularly busy at the holidays.
Things are quiet until wealthy Noel Carlton moves into the estate house and a helicopter wakes Cally at 6:30 one morning. Cally reads him the riot act and heads off to work. A short time later Noel shows up at her business seeking assistance to prepare his home for a family Christmas visit. In spite of Cally’s animosity Noel is willing to engage the firm for the services he needs. Cally reluctantly takes on the duties and is doing a wonderful job of decorating the main home. She is soaking off the day’s dirt in his decadent tub when she is discovered by Noel’s brother and mother. They mistake her for Noel’s fiancĂ© and now she has to get Noel to get her out of the mess before everyone gets hurt. But Noel has other ideas!
I enjoyed Cally’s smart and sassy, if impulsive, character. Noel is actually not a playboy but a man ready to settle down with a family. I particularly liked Noel’s warm personality and his friendly family. I feel the writing could use some tightening and tweaking but there is fire and fun in this enjoyable story. Individual rating: 4.25.
A Bride for Christmas by Marion Lennox
Wealthy businessman—and contented bachelor—Guy Carver is in Australia to take ownership of Jenny Westmere's wedding salon. It's strictly business. So no one is more surprised than Guy himself when he realizes that the deal he really wants to ink is making Jenny and her little boy his family by Christmas!
This story has good humor. Guy Carver is a man who has walled off his emotions and built an empire of exclusive, high-end wedding salons. He doesn’t understand why his partner has arranged to purchase a salon called Bridal Fluff even if it is in a rising resort community. Guy is intent on stripping away the fluff and removing the complication of the business director who is to remain to make the transition smooth.
Jenny and her mother-in-law have operated the business in a fashion that promotes friendly relationship with their community. They often give discounts to the locals who don’t have enough money for costly services. Guy doesn’t approve and isn’t about to have a local ‘hick’ wedding called a “Carver wedding”.  But Jenny has scheduled a big celebrity wedding to take place at Christmas. The only way Guy will manage to pull off the big event is to agree to the friend’s wedding so Jenny will help arrange the celebrity wedding.
I totally enjoyed the way the two functions had to be planned and how it worked out. Meanwhile it was beautiful how Guy came to recognize the family that Jenny had and that he wanted to be part of. This story points out that money is not the measure of success of a life. Individual rating: 4.5.
Audio Book Review: Christmas in an Elevator by Kay Murky
This is a quick, sweet listen.
Author: Kay Murky
Narrator: R.E. Chambliss
Length: 46 minutes
Free at AudioLark
Genre:  Holiday Romance
My Rating: 4.0 of 5.0
Tamara Donnelly has her mistletoe in a twist. It's bad enough her boss, Nathan Hatch, is hot enough to be Mr. August in a pin up calendar. It's worse he keeps her working late night after night. Now it's December 23rd, she's trapped in an elevator with him after hours, and she'd better keep her mind on business if she wants to keep her job.
Nathan Hatch can think of worse fates than to be stuck in an elevator with his beautiful assistant. God knows he's spent enough time wondering what she's like off the clock. They've got a bottle of brandy and a long night ahead of them, and Nathan can think of lots of interesting ways they could pass the time.A night in an elevator could be the best Christmas present ever.
Review:
I slipped this in from my  TBR, for a Just For Fun, quick Audio listen. It is a sweet holiday novella.
The scenario is somewhat predictable but nicely handled. Boss and assistant get stuck in the elevator the last night before Christmas Eve. Neither of them are dating -- Tamara had a bad experience with her last beau and Nathan is a work-a-holic who hasn’t taken time to start dating since he joined the firm five months before.  As they sit in the dark and share a bottle of brandy they share a little about themselves. Tamara explains how she will be attending the annual family Christmas Eve party where everyone will ask “where is your young man?” Although the dark and their need to be close to share warmth is tempting, they try to resist their attraction.
I was impressed that Ms. Murky was able to create pretty full characters in such a short piece. The pacing was good and the situation and dialogue realistic.
The narration is adequate if not inspiring. The voice was a bit too young sounding for my taste. If you want to fill 45 minutes with a nice easy listen this is great as a free audio.
Book Description
Publication Date: September 25, 2012
Always putting business before pleasure, Cassie McPherson works hard for her family's construction business. That might explain why she doesn't have a date for the company Christmas party. But it doesn't quite explain why she's crazy enough to hire an escort for the event or - crazier still - why she's dying to unwrap him like a present . . .
With whiskey-colored eyes and a killer smile, James is one gorgeous hunk who really knows how to fill out a tuxedo. He charms everyone, including Cassie. And when the night ends, the party doesn't stop. As Cassie falls, literally, into his bed, James falls head over heels in love. Now he has to figure out a way to tell her the truth: he's not an escort. He's her family's fiercest business rival. But all he wants for Christmas is her . . .
Review:
Cassie is a strong-minded, stubborn business woman. She handles the bookkeeping for her family’s construction business although she would be happier working on site or in design. She parted with her last real boyfriend 18 months before and has gotten into the habit of hiring escorts for events, like her company Christmas party. Usually the escorts are younger, good looking college types who are willing to let her be in charge. But the man who shows up for this event is mature, exudes confidence and has no plans to let Cassie control the evening.
James is immediately stricken by the sassy lady in the slinky red dress and sexy stilettos. He is also impressed by her knowledge and hutzpa.  It isn’t his fault that she jumps to the wrong conclusion thinking he is her paid escort for the night.
These two hit it off companionably and chemically.  James planned on explaining who he is before he tries to get her into his bed but those plans were waylaid by Cassie drinking a few too many glasses of champagne. When she wakes up in bed with her hunky date she decides to wake him with a surprise.  Things heat up between them while James tries to figure out how to tell her the truth and keep her by his side for more time together.
Cassie’s four brothers met James and liked him even though there was some protective posturing. But no one knew who he was until too late. When their father makes an insulting offer to buy out James’ business, both James and Cassie feel betrayed.  It looks like it will be a lonely Christmas for them unless they can get past their anger and a few more misunderstandings.
This story opens with and maintains a sense of feisty fun. Cassie and James are strong characters who both want the upper hand. Their interaction sizzles but it takes some effort to decide to trust and reveal their feelings. Cassie’s brothers are good characters too and there is a nice side romance involving one of them. The writing flows for easy, fast reading. I recommend this to those who enjoy a fun, sexy romance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cassie’s assistant points out her control issues:
“So stop hiring them and tr to find a nice guy to date. Or do you just like the control so much that you’re addicted?”... “That’s it, isn’t it? You can’t control your dad or your four brothers, but you can control some young sap for money.” Location 146.
James thinks he can control matters:
...He wanted to take as much time as possible, wanted to control every second of the kiss.
  It worked for all of a second.
  The second right before his lips touched hers. Once they did, he was lost.
  James no longer thought. He just felt.  Location 615

Review:
I enjoyed all three of these different stories. They are quick, nicely written, sweet romances. This is a nice way to discover new authors and I would be interested to read more from all three of these.

The first title, Wishes Come True, has a light, humorous bend to it.
Tora has operated her family-owned bakery, Sugar ‘n Spice, in the small town of Dorado, Texas for ten years. The small business was started by her grandmother and passed down through her mother. Through the years they have provided lots of sweets and charity support for the community. But Tora has never been away from home, not even for college experience.  Just as she has decided she is ready to sell the business and seek adventure in a big city, the winter wind blows a sweet little girl and her handsome, widowed father, Ryan, into her shop. Ryan initiates a plan to derail the sale of the shop and show Tora she can find a better adventure close to home.

I loved these characters and the sweet, light story.  It was fun how even some of Ms. Carroll-Bradd’s descriptive feelings fit with the baking theme like this phrase: “Her insides felt as quivery as the middle of a jelly doughnut.” (Location 109.)  Individual Rating 4.5.

A big, lovable dog is the added star character, and inspiration, of the second story, Harbor Homecoming. Cat McHugh owns an antique and Celtic specialty shop in Bal Harbor, Maine. She is excited at the possibility of purchasing a home that has come up for estate sale. It is near her downtown shop and although small and older, has a nice fireplace and lots of potential.  When she goes to view the home she discovers the backyard is ruled by a giant malamute named Bear.

Liam, a renowned modern artist, has come into town to handle the estate he was surprised to inherit from a great aunt he never knew. He is set on handling matters with the care and concern he thinks his aunt would want. That includes finding an appropriate, caring home for her dog. When he meets Cat while she is looking over the yard he is intrigued. Maybe his plans to evaluate and liquidate Great Aunt Sarah’s estate will take a different direction and longer than he first expected.

This is another lovely pair of characters - bright and independent. The dog is an armful of warm welcome and a sweet addition to the easy going, direct story. I liked the Irish influences too (holiday tradition included in the story) and would like to see if Ms. McFerrin explores these themes in longer stories. Individual Rating: 4.5.

*********
The third sweet romance, Beginning Forever, is set in Newburyport in 1955-1962. It is told in first person by Lillian who is called to the hospital when her husband and ‘forever’ love, Ronnie, is injured in a car crash. He reminds her with his dying breath that T.W. made a promise but Lillian doesn’t understand. She struggles with her grief and sorrow and only manages to move forward for the sake of their infant son and with the help of her good friend, Marion.

Seven years later finds Lillian still in a cocoon of grief, mostly just going through the motions of living. Marion introduces Lillian to her new neighbor, Wayne, and interest finally sparks but along with it come feelings of guilt. Can Lillian move beyond her past and will Texas Wayne be able to make her see that she is more than a burden to him?

It may be the sorrow and grief of this story made it less enjoyable for me. Certainly loss is never as light as a new love story.   I liked the portrayal of Wayne from Ronnie’s war memories and in his friendly reactions to Lillian and her son, Steven.  I would have liked his character to have been a little more developed. Although I was not as fully charmed by this story, I particularly liked the wonderful, descriptive imagery by Ms. Rochenski.  Individual Rating 4.25.
My flower beds lay buried. The absence of sound weighed like an omen, quickening my breath. My clothing rustled, mingling with the crunch of my footsteps to drown the silence. Location 1030.

Author Guest Post: Kaylee Baldwin Author of All I Want

 Before I Was A Writer
by Kaylee Baldwin

Long before I was a writer, I was a reader.

Even as a child I read anything I could get my hands on, including: the free encyclopedia (A) that a door-to-door salesman gave my family to entice us to buy the series, my mom’s Reader’s Digest magazine (cover to cover every month), and some totally not age-appropriate books I sneaked out of my parents room.

I’ve always loved writing as well, but it wasn’t until about six years ago that I really started to wonder if I could write a book. My husband had just taken a new job and we had to move away from our family and friends. I only had one child and wasn’t working at the time, so while he napped, I wrote.

It was a lot of fun writing that first book. I was really lonely, and my characters really came alive for me. I could make them do whatever I wanted. If I was in the mood to read a certain type of scene, I would just write it. I have strong doubts that the first book I ever wrote (a young adult contemporary, btw) will ever see the light of day, but I learned so much from it.

It was eye opening to me to go from being a reader to a writer. I’d never thought about how much work went into word choice, making sure the story had good pacing, making sure it flowed, answering all the plot questions, giving the plot enough conflict without overloading my characters, and coming up with a satisfying conclusion.

Being a writer has changed me. Everywhere I look, I see story ideas. I make sure I have a notebook or pieces of paper that I can scratch my ideas down on at any given moment so that I won’t forget them. I also find myself reading other books with a more analytical mind. I ask myself questions like: What elements in this story are making me like it so much? Why does the pacing feel fast/slow and what could the author do to change it? I find myself editing the books like I would for a critique partner because I’ve trained my mind to think that way.

When I write, I create. When I read, I escape. I think that all good authors have to be readers as well. We have to make time for other people’s words as well as our own. And although I love writing, and it fills up a part of me that nothing else could, my first love will always be reading.

Review:
All three of these stories are delightful and fit lovely together.  In each one the guy is pursing the girl who isn’t completely available when the story starts. Each girl discovers by Christmas what - or who - they really want. All three contain warm characters, cute plots and very real, natural dialogue.

*********
In Pretty Near Perfect Norah visits her deceased fiance’s family at Christmas time. The year before she and Jacob had announced their engagement, but a few months later he was killed in a sports accident. Norah loved his family too and hopes to bring some closure to thier loss by the holiday visit. She just doesn’t expect to run smack dab into a new fellow who is visiting with Jacob’s brother. Both Norah and Collin are startled by their immediate attraction.  As the family celebrates the holiday and remembers the past, Norah and Collin struggle not to respond to each other... but love has a magical way of its own.

The writing on this flows really well and I especially liked the characters of Norah and Collin. My only disappointment was that I wanted the story to continue when it ended. Guess I’ll have to find some other stories by Ms. Perry to read.  (Separate rating 4.25)

*********
Ms. Baldwin builds a delightful family celebration in Six Days of Christmas. Natalie has a ‘successful’ life planned out with her equally career-driven boyfriend Grant. He is pursuing a promotion in the legal department as she works on a project to launch her intern position into full time in the marketing department. Natalie is accustomed to order and control and is a bit dismayed that the project she has to work on over the holidays is a children’s toy, magnetic blocks.

Natalie agrees to travel to the home of her best friend for Christmas where she is faced with  teasing from her best friend’s younger brother, Jimmy, who has now grown up into a handsome man with a degree in architecture. Natalie’s work is interrupted as she becomes caught up in the family’s celebrations of six different country traditions leading up to Christmas.

Jimmy manages to spur Natalie to enjoy the fun and as the week passes she begins to wonder if strict order is all it’s cracked up to be or if maybe some spontaneity, as provided by Jimmy and his family, is a better goal.

Ms. Baldwin creates wonderful characters in this story, including not just Natalie and Jimmy but Jimmy’s whole family. The idea of different cultural celebrations each day is great fun. The story is warm and delightful and comes to good closing.  (Separate rating 4.5)

*********

Twist of Fate is fun from the get go with the characters sharing names in opposite order (Mackenzie Tyler and Tyler McKenzie). This leads to mail mix ups that allow Kenzie to read Ty’s letters from his mother and results in Ty getting the “Dear John” postcard meant for Kenzie. Kenzie is expecting her fiancĂ© to return from Madagascar shortly after Christmas in time to prepare for their late January wedding.

Tyler has been interested in Kenzie for the year they have lived in the same apartment complex. Can he somehow spend time with her over the weeks leading up to Christmas and get her to fall for him before she suffers the heartbreak of her broken wedding plans?

Tyler has been refusing to read or respond to letters from his controlling mother. He has also been a bit of ‘grinch’ about Christmas. Kenzie thinks she is doing a good deed when she invites his mother to visit before the holidays. Although Tyler is appalled, suddenly he discovers that having his mother there is allowing him opportunities to spend time with Kenzie. But how will Kenzie feel when she discovers he hid the postcard from her?

I really enjoyed how Ms. Anderson created the contrasting characters - Kenzie’s bright, happy personality and Ty’s rather geeky, dark personality that seeks her brightness and color. I also enjoyed the strong warmth of the story and the fun comparisons to the Grinch, computer programs and happy Christmases. This story also comes to a warm, happy ending.  (Separate rating 4.5)

Author Jolene Perry

Jolene Perry is an enigmatic figure. She is most often seen behind her laptop, staring at the words flying onto the screen with reckless abandon.

She survived growing up in rural Alaska, driving like a lunatic, and her husband’s careers in the military, as a perpetual student, and an Alaska State Prosecutor. She also survived as a middle school math teacher using her degree of Political Science and French.

One day Jolene was playing her guitar (probably some-thing juvenile for her kids) when she wondered what it would be like to write a song for a rockstar, and her first book was born. (that book is shelved)

She now lives a very glamorous life as a stay at home mom, elbow deep in dirty dishes and peanut butter sandwiches. She doesn’t even attempt to keep up with the laundry because non-writing time is precious, and her family is sorta awesome.

Rachael Anderson is the author of four contemporary romances: Divinely Designed, Luck of the Draw, Minor Adjustments, and The Reluctant Bachelorette. She's the mother of four, can't sing, doesn't dance, and despises tragedies. But she recently figured out how yeast works and can now make homemade bread, which she is really good at eating.
