Review:
Mama wants a brown eyed cow to have milk for the baby and for Papa’s tea. It is a winter day so Papa tells Samuel to ‘dress warm’ as he is going with Papa on the long journey to town to trade for the cow. Samuel uses his best manners while meeting strangers and helping Papa make decisions on the trades. There are items Papa likes, and some Samuel would like to keep, but they have to keep on trading to get the cow for Mama. And they must do it on “a long road on a short day”.

This is a very charming story even to listen to without the illustrations. There are good descriptions and interesting neighbors with trades to be made. This would be a lovely book to share with young children. I recommend this for children and parents to enjoy.

Audio Notes: Matt Godfrey does a really nice job with the narration. His voice is soothing as he shares the simple, direct text. I enjoyed the audio and I bet having the audio with the illustrated book would be wonderful.

Review:
Joe Pickett decided as a young boy that he wanted to be a game warden. It isn’t a glamorous or well paying job, but he gets to be outdoors, protecting the ecosystem. He is a new game warden struggling to make ends meet with his pregnant wife and two young daughters. Joe’s trying to do his job the right way without corruption or bribes.

Joe is surprised when his seven-year-old daughter tells him there is a man behind the woodpile. When Joe investigates, he discovers a dead local outfitter. A neighboring game warden, a local deputy and Joe go into the mountain to find the camp of the dead man’s friends. They discover more dead hunters and a survivor gets shot at the site. The local sheriff’s office is quick to declare the severely wounded survivor as the murderer and to close the case. Joe suspects there is a reason this hunter, with whom he had a prior run-in, chose his home to run to. He continues to push into the background, unknowingly stirring up trouble.

Joe doesn’t realize initially that the outfitter left something else in the woodpile as his daughter discovers the creatures and keeps them as secret pets. But someone else knows and is willing to lie, threaten and even kill to keep the secret. As Joe begins to suspect there is an endangered, maybe even thought extinct, species involved in the murders. Can Joe gather the facts he needs to show the truth before his career is ruined and his family suffers physical harm?

Joe is portrayed as a ‘regular Joe’ who sometimes feels inadequate. He plods along determined to uncover the truth. The story slowly, but steadily builds the suspense and danger to Joe and his family to the point where I was catching my breath. I enjoyed the scenes with Joe’s daughters and the critters. I appreciated the facts regarding the job of a game warden and the regulation details regarding endangered and extinct species. The author also explains the negative impact that the community will experience once an extinct species is disclosed. The dilemma between nature and man is an interesting element of the story. Meanwhile, the villains are disgusting and the corruption disturbing. There is foul language which is too bad. The writing is clearly written from a male viewpoint and it flows easily. I enjoyed the mystery and recommend this to crime suspense fans.

Review:
Summer convinced her Boston husband to leave the comforts of home and travel west to make a new home for their family. Sadly, her husband and children caught typhoid and died outside a small German, Mennonite community in Kansas. Stranded with nothing, mired in grief and having dismissed God after he failed to grant her prays for healing, Summer feels she has nothing to live for.

Widower Peter lives with his elderly mother-in-law and his son, Thomas, who is currently house bound due to injuries. Peter and Summer reach an agreement that she will tutor Thomas in exchange for food and shelter in the small shack on his farm. Others in the community are fearful of Summer as ‘not one of their kind’ and begin to make trouble for Peter and Summer. After a blizzard destroys the shack and Summer moves into the house, the rumors and resentment increase.

Summer is a sad woman but a dedicated teacher. Thomas appreciates her efforts and slowly, between Thomas’ joy in learning and Peter’s patience, caring, and steadfast faith in God, Summer begins to believe that perhaps there is a future for her after all. Just as plans for her to settle in the community are coming together, Summer gets a letter that changes her plans.

Thomas is devastated to lose a woman he views as a mother and, only when she is leaving does Peter realize how important Summer has become to him and his family. Summer too realizes that she is leaving behind something precious, but she is now listening to God and feels she must follow as he leads. What is God’s plan for all of them?

I thoroughly enjoyed this faith-filled story with the double meaning of Summer’s return. Peter’s character is wonderfully developed as a simple man with practical talents and deep-rooted faith. Thomas is a good character and even the non-English speaking grandmother has an interesting role. I enjoyed learning the fascinating tidbits of the Mennonite Community and early grist mills.

Although the community is faith-based, the author shows how small-minded people can cause hurt even in such a community. We all know that Christians are flawed and fail to live up to the teachings of Christ in one way or another. On the other side of that lesson, the author shows how true faith and love of God can spread from one faithful follower to another.

I am sure I have read and enjoyed this author before but it has been a number of years. I won't wait so long for the next book by Ms. Sawyer. I recommend this sweet story to readers who enjoy historical, Christian romance.

Audio Notes: Barbara Caruso does a great job with the narration. She captures the emotional tones of the characters as well as delivering the accents and German phrasings. The narration enhanced my enjoyment of the story. I am surprised that I didn't see I had come across Ms. Caruso as a narrator in all my readings but I would be glad to listen to more that she narrates.

Review:
Ged is just a boy when he begins to learn magic from his Aunt. Some are herbal remedies and lore but he also learns magical words of power. After a surprising protection of his village Ged, gaining the name Sparrowhawk, is taken under the wing of a wizard for more serious training. Ged ends up traveling to a sorcerer’s academy where he increases his learning and power. He experiences youthful bullying and jealousy. In a pique of confrontation, Ged exercises a spell that releases an unknown dark force.

Ged is deemed a supreme sorcerer but is afraid he has brought danger to his school community. He journeys on to find his first job as a village wizard. But again, danger follows him. Ged realizes that the force he released is tracking him and no one will be safe unless he can face and overcome the dark evil. Ged fulfills his duty to protect his village by facing threatening dragons. Then Gid sets out to run away from the shadow he released…until he must face it.

I liked the challenges that Ged faces and overcomes. It is sad, but a real sign of youthful mistake, that his own pride led him to release an evil that haunts his life for years.

This is the first story I have read by Le Guin and I have a couple more on my TBR shelve. I found the story creative and at times was pleased to smile at the prose. I just felt that the story was a little dark and dragged a little for me. It may have been my mood that caused me to not become more invested in the story. I would recommend this to readers who enjoy fantasy and magic tales.

Audio Notes: Rob Inglis does a very nice job with the narration. He conveys the personality of Ged as well as the somber tone of the story. I am glad I had this in audio.

Review:
Charlie is an eleven-year-old who has been placed with an Aunt and Uncle she doesn’t know in what she views as a “hillbilly” community. Charlie is angry that her father is in jail and her mother is irresponsible. Charlie is also upset that her seventeen-year-old sister is allowed to stay in her hometown of Raleigh with a school friend.

Charlie expresses her sullenness around her homemaker Aunt, her easy-going Uncle, and even her new teacher. She takes her anger out on other school children in words and sometimes pushes or kicks. Surprisingly Charlie slowly makes friends with a young boy who lives down the lane. Howard has been assigned as her classroom “Backpack Buddy”, to show her around. He has a physical handicap which she says results in an “up-down” walk. Howard tries to help Charlie with her anger by giving her a special word to say when she finds her anger rising. Sometimes, when he is nearby, he whispers it into her ear.

At first, Charlie feels the only favorable thing that happens is finding a stray dog. Howard and her guardians help her to capture the cute dog and Charlie is thrilled to have such a loving friend.

Through all of these events, Charlie holds onto the secret of her daily wish. She has learned multiple ways to express a wish even beyond wishing on a four-leaf clover or a shooting star. Even with her persistent wishing, she wonders if her wish could ever come true.

This is a very sweet story of a hurt little girl. The dysfunction of her parents has landed her in the social service system leaving her scared with strangers and feeling abandoned. The story is told from Charlie’s view. I learned lots of new ways to make a wish which is fun. It is very wonderful to watch how her life and attitude changes over the months that she remains with her Aunt and Uncle. I do recommend this for middle graders and even younger although parents may want to read or listen first or at least with their child to help address the abandonment and anger issues.

Audio Notes: Suzy Jackson does an excellent job portraying a little girl. She manages to give voice to the child’s confusion, anger, frustration, and fear. I am glad that I listened to the audio version.

Review: (Mild Spoilers)
In the opening chapters, Darrow suffers through mania during solitary captivity. He faces confusion and worse when the box is finally opened and he lies completely humiliated before his enemies, including former friends, now brutal enemy Jackal and mocking Cassius. Then to his surprise, he receives unexpected aid to escape.

Darrow is brought back to health to continue the heart-aching and dangerous rebellion. He still has a handful of friends at his side although some earlier friends have become enemies and it isn’t always clear who might still betray him. Through one near-death experience after another, he faces the continuing possibility that he will lose more friends as the war against the better-equipped Golds escalates.

There are moments of great suspense and sorrow with small triumphs that bridge into the next stage of bitter, gruesome deprivation that accompanies war. Darrow will have to inspire several other levels of society, many slaved Obsidians, Pinks, and Blues, to support the challenge for equality if he wants a chance to win for his own people, the oppressed Reds.

The characters are well developed and wonderfully complex. There is terrible, twisted evil and some surprises. I totally enjoyed the suspense, intrigue and even the dark trauma in this story. Originally this was to be the conclusion but there are two additional books that have been added to the series. My son indicated that I don’t have to start those right away but I was very glad to read/listen to this one while we were visiting as he was eager to share the excitement with me. I highly recommend the first three books for fans of dystopian fantasy.

Audio Notes: Tim Gerard Reynolds does an amazing job with the narration. He captures the complex characters and gives them voices that fit their personalities. It is a rich listening experience.

Review:
Viola Kingsley has been dealing with the revelation on the death of her husband the Earl of Riverdale, that her marriage was invalid and her children were born out of wedlock. Although the Earl’s true heir is willing to share the estate fortune, Viola has stayed apart and quiet. Her eldest daughter has made a new life and marriage that she is happy with. Her son has taken a commission in the army and her youngest daughter, soon of age to enter society, is still at home with Viola. After a family gathering Viola has a private meltdown. She takes off on her own, not even taking one of the family carriages.

When the rented conveyance results in her being stranded at a nondescript country inn, Viola is surprised to see someone she knows across the room. Marcel Lamarr had flirted with Viola 15 years before but she had told him to go away. Her first marriage was arranged by her father and there was no love between Viola and the Earl but Viola has always been proper and stayed in her duties and circumstances. Viola has accepted that she may not be destined to have a “happy ever after.”

Marcel is a rake who doesn’t believe he is entitled to a normal married life. Marcel sends his brother on home without him so that he can approach Viola. He proposes that they ‘run away’ for a few weeks and to his surprise she agrees.

Marcel isn’t the easiest character to like but Viola is able to pull him out of his shell. I enjoyed their growing relationship and the dilemma they find themselves in when their families discover their tryst. Although these characters flout convention, as usual, Balogh creates a situation of conflict that resolves into a HEA. I recommend this author and this story to those who enjoy historical romance.

Audio Notes: Rosalyn Landor is a wonderful narrator for this genre. Her accents fit the characters and she is able to give each one a voice and fitting personality. I enjoyed listening to this novel.

Review:
Lizbeth Rose’s world is an alternate Southwest US because a flu epidemic contributed to a government collapse. This resulted in America being broken up with territories going to Canada (in the north), Mexico (to the south), Russia (in the west) and UK (in the east). Most ‘native’ Americans are frightened and cautious of Russians magicians known as Grigoris.

Lizbeth is a “gunnie” or bodyguard and guide in a bleak, rough land. She has recently suffered a loss of team members after a surprise attack by bandits. Lizbeth isn’t happy when two Russians appear at her door seeking to hire her skills but the fee they offer would allow her some security. She agrees to help them look for a man named Alex Karkarov or his rumored daughter. They fail to tell her the political importance of their mission that other sorcerers are set on preventing their success. Lisbeth and her two clients are repeatedly attacked and Lisbeth has to rely on some of their skills as they travel. But as the journey brings them to the place where the man was killed, it becomes clear that Lisbeth hasn’t told her clients some important facts,

The story moves along a deadly path to the mission’s conclusion. There is quite a bit of violence by gun and magical attacks. Although the journey makes good action, the plot doesn’t seem to present a clear purpose other than introducing gunnie Lisbeth and her alternate world. Lisbeth is a well-developed character which is more than I can say for the background history that led to this alternate US. I found the story interesting entertainment but not compelling towards further books in the series. Readers who like alternate history, magical elements and a strong heroine may want to check this out.

Audio Note: Eva Kaminsky does a reasonable job and did well with the accents. Her rendition of Lizbeth sounded a little older than the character who is (I think) no older than her early 20s. Still, I am glad I had the book to listen to as it was an easy listen.

Becca and Denny were young lovers when she was in college and he set off to be a Marine. Denny’s mother died and he broke off his relationship with Becca and reenlisted, leaving her devastated. It has been three years and Becca is wondering if she can commit to her boyfriend of the past six months. She suspects that she has unresolved issues with her first love.

Becca knows her twin brother, Rich, is heading out to Virgin River to meet with his service buddies, including Denny. Becca shows up at the last minute to invite herself to the hunting and fishing trip.

The tension is immediate when Denny sees Becca walk in behind Rich. He had asked for a second chance after his confused mistake but she shot him down cold. Why in the world would she show up now at a men’s hunting weekend? The sniping between the two ends up with Becca suffering an accident which means she is stuck in town with Denny taking care of her. Can they stop their defensive bickering long enough to admit their true feelings? And how would they resolve the distance between Becca’s home and family in San Diego and Denny’s chosen life in rustic Virgin River?

It may have taken me a little time to warm up to Becca but her attitude is realistic in light of the hurt that she suffered when Denny dumped her. It was fairly evident that Denny never stopped caring for her but he didn’t want to be hurt again either.

It is charming to see how the town members support each other and are ready to fold Becca into their community family. Author Carr has this special ability to present real characters and a warm small town community. Becca’s care and concern for the local children adds an additional sweet element along with the town members caring for the less fortunate among them. I have read a few of the early books in this series and this easy, cheery read works fine as a nice holiday stand alone. I recommend this to fans of Robyn Carr and fans of small town romances.

Audio Notes: Therese Plummer is a consistently reliable narrator for this series. Her clear character voices and emotional portrayal add depth to an already strong story. The audio makes this a plus listen for me.

Review:
Will is a 15-year-old orphan who has arrived at the age of “choosing” where the children are chosen for their apprenticeships. Will doesn’t know the name of his father but knows he died a hero in battle. The castle Lord has been kind to Will and the other orphans. Will wants to join the warriors to fight for his Lord, but Will is small and wily. He isn’t brawny for battle, he isn’t inclined to smithy work or cooking or most of the other training areas. After all the other children are chosen Will is left thinking he will be relegated to the farms as an unskilled workhand. Then he learns that one guild master has taken notice of him – he is chosen as a Ranger’s apprentice.

The Rangers are able to blend in the shadows. They scout and spy and learn to defend themselves in special ways. Will, with a sharp brain, quick reflexes and eagerness to find his place, is a good listener and fast learner. He would just like to earn a smile or sign of approval from his master/mentor, Halt.

The first year of training is nearly completed and Will is hoping to be approved by the full Ranger council. But before the ceremony can take place news comes that the exiled enemy, Morgarath, is back to remove the other leaders and take over the kingdom. He has raised and controls some powerful, evil monsters and has already killed several other leaders. He now has his eyes set on Gorlan. As everyone at Gorlan prepares for battle, Will, Halt and two other Rangers set out to fight the monsters.

I appreciated the author’s handling of young teen issues such as bullying and early interaction with those of the opposite sex. The trepidations and struggles of the young people are emotions anyone could relate to. The battles are fraught with danger but for the most part end with good defeating evil. This is appropriate for young people and for adults who like castles, knights, scouts and battles to defeat the monsters. I would be inclined to read/listen to more in the series.

Audio Notes: John Keating does a great job with the narration. He captures the voice of the characters, the emotional struggles and the intensity of the danger. The narration added to my enjoyment of the story.

Review:
Emma Chandler was raised by her spinster Aunts in a small Texas town. As a young girl she rescued a starving, freezing boy she found in their barn. The two are best of friends for a couple of years until Malachi is driven out of town. Emma continues to pursue her dreams to provide a women’s colony as a sanctuary for abused women.

Things have been going well in Harper’s Station for several years when suddenly someone is threatening them and trying to drive them out of their own community. Emma and her staunch women aren’t about to back down without a fight. But Emma knows she needs help and she calls in the one man she knows she can trust – her childhood friend, Malachi.

Malachi is quick to respond to the call of the girl who saved his life. He is ready to help protect her and her community, but he will struggle to keep his distance from the woman he so admires.

I was immediately drawn by the young characters of Malachi and Emma and loved their maturity when they meet as adults and try to resist their obvious feelings. Ms. Witemeyer provides a plot with building mystery, intrigue and danger along with a sweet, tentative romance. The story moved along quickly, and I found it delightful. I will be picking up more titles by Ms. Witemeyer. I recommend this to readers who enjoy Historical Romance.

Audio Notes: Johanna Parker does a lovely job with the narration. She provides appropriate voices for the characters and fitting energy. The narration enhanced the story for me.

Amelia is a strong minded, multi-talented woman in 1892 England. She met her scholarly, archaeologist husband, Radcliffe Emerson, in Egypt. Now they are more or less quiet at home with their precocious 4-year-old son, Ramses. But it is clear that both Radcliffe and Amelia are restless and looking for a way to get back to the field. An effort to get a small dig from the neighbor fails gloriously (well more accurately gory and muddy).

Fortunately, an old friend, Lady Baskerville, appears seeking Emerson’s leadership to take over her recently deceased husband’s dig. Amelia and Radcliffe are not perturbed nor deterred by the fact that Sir Henry Baskerville’s death has been reported a result of a black curse, the Curse of the Pharaohs. Baskerville’s assistant has also gone missing and the photographer is currently ill.

Amelia is bound to share in the adventure with her best friend and husband, Radcliffe. They plan ways to approach the dig and minimize the fearful reactions of the native workers. They also have to deal with a jaunty, Irish reporter, a flirtatious widow, a boisterous, domineering woman who claims Radcliffe was her lover in a former life, and a few other unique characters.

The story is told in first person by Amelia with her intractable and irrepressible strength and humor. Amelia addresses women’s issues and primitive superstitions while determinedly investigating the death of Sir Henry, which she insists is murder, and finding the missing assistant who is her prime suspect. Soon other accidents, ghostly appearances and outright attacks begin to stir other suspicions.

I appreciate Amelia’s courage insisting on working with her husband in her era and the exotic setting. The mystery meanders a little but eventually everything pulls together. This is a fun series that is easy to listen to. There is adventure, mystery and humor. I recommend the series to readers who enjoy strong heroines, archaeological settings and cozy mystery.

Audio Notes: Barbara Rosenblat does a wonderful job with the narration. She provides a fitting setting and era tone as well as good character voices. She also provides good emotions that help carry the humor. I enjoy listening to this series.

One of the local Wyoming highway patrol officers, Rosey, has recently been assigned to the road in Wind River Canyon. This is a fairly remote area with tunnels that have seen tragedy causing it to be called no-man’s-land. Even the radios and cell phones have intermittent operation. Nighttime should be mostly quiet but Rosey has been getting strange “officer needs assistance” calls. The calls come at the same time on the nights they come and there seems to be an accident that follows. But the strangest feature is that they are coming from Bobby Womack, an Arapaho patrolman who died almost half a century ago. Womack’s death was shrouded in mystery and occurred leaving some question whether he was involved in a legendary bank heist.

Sheriff Walt Longmire and his friend, Henry Standing Bear, have been asked to talk with Rosey and get her to speak to a professional about her confused claims. Henry is the Chief of the Cheyenne Reservation Tribal Police and often helps Walt with investigations.

Walt and Henry meet with Rosey, listen to her description and see the tokens she has picked up. Although Henry Standing Bear acknowledges that spirits and supernatural elements may be at play, Walt is intent on finding a factual, scientific explanation for the events.

I was pulled into this story not just by the opening lines but also by the character accents. I loved the quick mystery with its haunting aspects that are blended with distinct clues. There are several suspenseful scenes and the tension and supernatural mystery build until there is a surprising resolution. This was my first story/listen in this series but won’t be my last. We don’t get Netflix so I don’t know if we will be able to view the TV series. That’s okay – I can always pick up more books in the series. I recommend this to readers who enjoy western mystery and Native American characters. This novella is a good way to meet the primary characters.

Audio Notes: George Guidall provides wonderful narration. I was enthralled with the accents and the Native American character voices. I thoroughly enjoyed the will be glad to listen to more in this series.

Lewis loses his parents when he is aged 10. He took the bus to be with his Uncle Jonathan, who he wasn’t allowed to meet when his parents were alive. In 1948 the family considered the Uncle who “smoked and drank and played poker” a “black sheep” to the Catholic family. Shortly after being met at the station by his Uncle, Lewis discovers there is something strange happening with clocks in the community.

The first night at his new home, Lewis finds Uncle Jonathan prowling the halls. It doesn’t take long before Lewis learns that his Uncle and neighbor, Mrs. Zimmermann, are more than black sheep --- they are witches.

When Lewis isn’t playing games with and observing the banter between Uncle Jonathan and Mrs. Zimmermann, he is reading magic books he finds in his Uncle’s home. Lewis, an overweight boy, has always struggled to make friends at school. In order to impress a new friend, Lewis starts to experiment with the magic he is reading about. He and his friend challenge each other to visit a cemetery during Halloween. Lewis inadvertently releases the evil spirit of Serenna Izard, the wife of the prior owner of Uncle Jonathan’s house.

Lewis keeps the secret of his misdeed to himself until danger forces him to confess to his Uncle. Jonathan, Mrs. Zimmermann and Lewis must locate the clock in the walls before Serena gets to it and turns on the doomsday timepiece.

This lightly ‘spooky’ story is set years ago (1948) and was copyrighted in 1973. I had difficulties with the “fat” reverences, the name calling, the sneaking and the careless mischief. These actions might not be unusual for the age group, but I was disappointed that there didn’t seem to be an effort to encourage the moral virtues of truth and obedience. At least there was good over evil in the later part of the story. I suppose this light, ghostly mystery might be more engaging for a tweener than an adult. (Also, I understand that the print has engaging illustrations that probably helps with the target audience.)

Audible Notes: The narration by George Guidall suits the time period and the audience. His delivery demonstrates an experienced storyteller. The audio enhanced the story for me.

Lisa Grant left her tense job as a Chicago homicide detective to become a small-town police chief. When a construction crew uncovers a human skeleton, Lisa calls for help from the County enforcement. Lisa is at a point in life where she is open to making personal time to look towards a family on her own. Mac is at an age where he would like to settle down with a family like his own close-knit clan. The two professionals clearly have zinging chemistry, but they agree to hold off on any personal relationship until their current investigation is complete.

Lisa and Mac are intent on revealing the events almost twenty years ago that resulted in a death of a young girl. They have identified the victim and have pressed the three ‘friends’ who were last known to see the girl. However, without hard evidence they are preparing to shut the investigation as a cold case. Then new deaths begin to alarm Lisa and Mac.

A strong element of this story is the pull between the characters who have to defer even the first date. This is woven throughout the mystery and case interviews. I appreciated the presentation of the heat of the attraction without graphic, sexual details. The romance was sort of refreshing as the couple acknowledge their interest but put it on hold... except in their thought processes which was a bit repetitive. I also found the lack of provable evidence in the crimes to be interesting and well crafted. The Christian faith of the characters is apparent in their life choices but not preachy.

Mac’s brothers are other strong alpha men who make fun, flirtatious appearances and are presumably the “men of valor’ whose stories are shared in the series. I recommend this to readers who like Christian romantic suspense.

Audio Notes: Narrators Therese Plummer and Jennifer Grace did a nice job sharing the characters and narrative. I’ve always enjoyed Therese Plummer and I liked the offset voice from Jennifer Grace. The narration added to my enjoyment of the story.

Review:
“Murderbot” is a company droid assigned as the security unit (SecUnit) for an exploratory scientist team on a distant planet. Murderbot has spare time on its hands/circuits. It has already hacked its own company module and spends time streaming old movie/TV series while trying to decide who it really is. It hasn’t allowed the humans to know it can override their commands if it wants to.

A nearby mission camp goes silent so the scientists and Murderbot take a trip to discover what happened. Murderbot realizes that there is danger as it discovers murdered humans and destroyed droid units.

Normally Murderbot doesn’t care so much about humans but he finds himself liking the scientist group who seem to care for each other. Now Murderbot has to discover a way to protect its people. Maybe it really can become part of a team.

I do like sentient robots, even though that could be scary. Murderbot is a likeable character and I enjoyed how it strategized and worked with the head of the team, Dr. Mensa, to protect the humans and uncover, and out wit, those behind the murders. This story has good world building and a full plot for just a short story. The author presents prejudices from the humans and the robot and allows them to grow beyond those initial stereotypes. This is my first read by Ms. Wells but I have an older story in my Audible TBR that I plan to listen to soon.

I recommend this to those who enjoy AI sci fi stories. My only concern is that the three additional stories are under 4 hours at a price of $11.99 each so the 12 hours ends up costing a healthy $36.00.

Audio Notes: Kevin R. Free does a good job with the narration. There is an appropriate robotic tone that fits Murderbot as the narrator of the story. Free gives the other characters their own voices that helped to bring the story alive. I am glad I listened to this on audio.

Colt was raised on a ranch by his father, Sam, who had a strong take control attitude. As a young man they began to clash so Colt headed off to the city to make his own brand of success. He was doing great at private equities until a situation lost him his career and savings. He headed home to try to help with his father’s illness. Colt is surprised when he arrives to find Sam’s attitude has softened.

Colt’s first meeting with Angelina is at the end of a gun. It is rather strange behavior for a housekeeper but Colt is quick to learn that Angelina has secrets. At least Angelina’s tough love and trust God philosophy is helping Sam to seek a relationship with God and with his estranged son.

Colt and Angelina are doing the clashing now with Angelina inclined to think Colt is a city slicker who will be heading back to the bright lights as soon as he can. Colt thinks Angelina is bossy and antagonistic and he is determined to uncover the secret she is hiding.

I really enjoyed this from beginning to end. Ms. Herne shares thoughts from the characters which makes them very real. She also unabashedly shares Godly themes - resistance (prodigal) to redemption to reliance - which I greatly appreciated. There is good chemistry between Colt and Angelina and the secondary characters (including Sam, Angelina’s adorable son, Noah, and her dedicated mother) add more depth and richness. There are family issues and a touch of suspense and danger.

There is strong description and easy flow to the writing. I have read Ruth Logan stories years ago and always like them. I have to add more of her to my reading. I recommend this to readers who enjoy heartwarming family interaction, sweet romance and Christian themes.

Audio Notes: Anna Salinas does a fine job with the narration as her voice fit the tone of the story. She doesn’t give strong voice changes but enough to distinguish plus she manages the pacing well to reflect appropriately the aside thoughts. The narration added to my enjoyment of the story.

Shai is a magical “forger” using mediums and soul stamps to forge art, both small and large. If she knows the make-up elements of her subject she is able to recreate it. She is caught as a result of a betrayal. On the eve of her scheduled execution the official arbiters, offer Shai a deal if she will forge a new soul for the secretly comatose Emperor. Although her Soul-Forgery skill is considered an abomination, the arbiters are willing to use it to help them retain their positions of power.

Shai agrees to the project which would allow her freedom… and life. She is ever the opportunist. The arbiters are cautious about her skills as several believe that she is skilled enough to change even the fabric of her cell to make an escape. They go to great lengths to secure her. Shai does plan to forge an escape but she is under constant watch. She is supervised by Gaotona, a man who respects the quality of her skills but disdains her use of them for forgery – not recognizing her form of art.

Shai is offered secret deals by a power-hungry arbiter. She fears that even if she accepts the offer the woman will have her killed before letting her go free. It may take all of Shai’s excellent skills to fashion a way out of her situation and she has a limited amount of time and resources.

This story is wonderfully creative, imaginatively plotted, beautifully written and executed. I kept seeking times to listen as I was fascinated by Shai’s mind maneuvering and the rapport she builds with Gaotona. The story is full even though it is short. By the end my thoughts were “author Brandon Sanderson is an artist”. I recommend this to readers who enjoy a skillfully crafted mystery and fantasy.

Audio Notes: Angela Lin is a narrator who is new to me. Her voice captured the character of Shai and the twisting nuances of the story. The narration enhanced an already excellent work. I would be glad to listen to other books she has narrated.

Review:
Four strangers are pulled (or called) together to meet in one dangerous situation. After that they are pulled together again to face other supernatural circumstance.

"The Call" by Bill Myers introduces all four characters. It is written from the perspective of Brenda, a street raised, brash tattoo artist who happens to draw images of visions she sees effecting her customers. The four characters come together as they try to help a student trying to escape from a mysterious Institute for Advanced Psychic Studies. The student and characters are faced with their worst nightmare and have to struggle to make it out of the grounds safely.

"The Haunted” by Frank Peretti finds the professor, a former priest who now argues in favor of logic rather than faith, facing a mysterious haunted house which appears and disappears, trapping it's victims in their own evil pasts. His assistant, Andi, Brenda and Tank, are all drawn to the location to help solve the mystery and keep the professor from becoming a victim. During their creepy encounters they discover a little boy, Daniel, with an imaginary friend who protects him.

Angela Hunt focuses on Andi in "The Sentinels". Andi is the professors brilliant, geeky assistant who sees mathematical and natural patterns. Animals around the world are mysteriously dying and soon there are birds plummeting from the sky and dead fish littering the beach near Andi’s vacation house. The professor flies in Tank and Brenda, with Daniel in tow, to help solve another mystery. Daniel quickly forms a bond with Andi’s dog who is at risk of the killing phenomenon. Hopefully Tank’s gifts can help while Andi tries to unravel the mystery.

Finally, "The Girl" by Alton Gansky, gives us more of Tank’s background. Tank is a country boy jock excited to get a football scholarship until he realizes his soft heart doesn’t like hurting other players. He is sweet, caring and has a gift for healing. He and his uncle try to locate a barefoot girl in the cold snow. They discover that she is not what they think, more than they expect and in danger from unknown creatures. The other members of the team are called in to help face another supernatural occurrence.

I imagine it is not a simple thing for four authors to write of four characters and four situations and still make them fit seamlessly. The introduction noted the authors’ approach which was to have an overall storyline with episodes featuring each character – similar to a TV series. I found the work impressive for that achievement. I also enjoyed the four characters, the different stories and the gentle faith elements that are interwoven with the supernatural aspects.

I have read and enjoyed novels by three of these authors; Alton Gansky is new to me. I would be interested in reading more of this collaborative team as they use their gifts to fight an encroaching darkness. I recommend this to readers who enjoy supernatural mysteries and gentle faith elements.

Audio Notes: The four narrators, Bill Myers, Cherise Boothe, Ali Ahn, Jeff Brick each do a good job with the story presentations. The two females narrate the female character stories and the males narrate the male views. I enjoyed all four efforts which kept the work interesting. The narration enhanced my enjoyment of the book.

Review:
This is engaging and charming! A little more sexual spice than I like which is surprising as this is a back title (1995 I think) set to audio.

Luke has steeled himself to block out love after losing his first love. He is a consummate dandy but all man, skilled at pistol, sword and women. He has returned from Paris to London at the request of his Uncle to take on the responsibilities of being a Duke and head of the family since his elder brother died two years before. He has been away since he was banished ten years before over a family quarrel. Although he hasn't thought about marriage, and doesn't have love to offer, he decides he should marry before going to face his country home and his widowed sister-in-law.

Lady Anna is a young woman of bright, sunny disposition which hides pain and secrets. She has not planned to marry due to the threat of a man in her not too distant past. But he has not returned from America and she decides to enjoy this taste of freedom in London.

Luke and Anna agree to marry after a three day acquaintance. They have much to learn about each other and the secrets begin to unravel on the wedding night. They both experienced betrayal in their past and current situations and have to reach beyond that if they are going to save their marriage.

I really enjoyed the tone of this story and I loved the growth and transition for these characters. There is good conflict and suspense that carries through to the end. I don't agree that Anna should have held her secrets so long but she had cause to be fearful. I really liked Emily as a character and other secondary characters added to the delightful package. I do enjoy this author highly recommend her stories to readers who love historical fiction.

Audio Notes: Rosalyn Landor is a wonderful narrator. She nails the voices and emotions and I love listening to her.
