Review:
Bob was the original human brain loaded up to become an AI entity to head into space. A hundred years later, Bob’s organization has expanded to the 24th replicative generation. That presents its own problems, but Bob’s first level replicate, Bender, hasn’t been heard from since he set out to explore the distant galaxies a hundred years ago. Bob has never let go of the idea of finding Bender even as the Bobiverse continues to move out to deep space.

Bob suddenly comes across a new world where he thinks Bender may be found. Now the goal will be to infiltrate the complex megastructure with a ‘river’ environment, in order to determine if Bender is a prisoner or something else. A handful of Bob’s generational ‘children’ are excited to help in the challenge to get into the structure and then move among the beaver like society that has been forbidden to use former technology.

While Bob and friends are pursuing the quest to find Bender, other replicant families are involved in an ideological argument. There are those who insist that the Bobs have no right to interfere with the societies that they come upon…even if it means watching societal genocide. This creates a second story line with some interesting discussions and actions.

I enjoyed the virtual settings, the creative societies, and the ideological arguments. There is plenty of humor in this series, including fun references to movies, books, and authors that sci fi fans will recognize. I recommend starting the series at book 1 to get to know the main Bob replicates. I recommend this series as an easy and entertaining listen.

Audio Notes: Ray Porter delivers the narrative with his usual excellent presentation and spot on voicing and energy. His narration enhanced the story for me.

Review:
This lecture is very informative on the history of science fiction writing themes, notable authors and their works. The material is presented in logical groupings, and it kept my interest. It supplies a great resource for me to look for more authors and works in the genre that I will want to read/listen to. What this course DID NOT clearly include, though implied by the title, is what writing features make great science fiction. I know that I have often commented on the “irony” aspects of science fiction stories that I read. I was hoping to learn the elements of the genre to look for as I read.

There were some genre features shared such as the fact that science fiction is deemed to be a category presenting future worlds although time travel and alternate worlds fit too. Science fiction is distinguished from fantasy which generally contains more world building than connection to possible realities. The material presented described the creative use of futuristic technologies that often became real in a matter of years. It made me wonder if science developed on the creative ideas or if the authors had leaks of real projects.

Another part of the features that did contribute to the writing of science fiction are subsets such as the various means to make space travel possible and “The Artifact” as a specific theme to build stories on. The course also covers post-apocalyptic and dystopian themes. I enjoyed hearing authors and titles that I am familiar with. And now have more to look for. I do recommend this to anyone interested in the history of science fiction.

Audio Notes: The author does a good job narrating this lecture material. As noted in my comments above, the material is grouped well and makes the listening move along well. I am glad that I got to listen to the free book while available in my library. But I am also very glad to have the pdf available for future resource material.

Review:
Ms. V is a devout Christian who serves as a counselor at the Center of Hope Christian Academy. She clearly cares about the teens she works with, listening to their problems, observing behaviors in classes and on campus, providing sound guidance, and covering all the situations with prayer.

At night, Ms. V steps into the spiritual realm with a warrior’s sword and the word of God to battle the enemy that wants to steal the hearts of her students. The spiritual battles are taxing on Ms. V, but she is willing to stand firm as long as God calls her to save souls.

The story opens with the images of the spiritual battles which caught my attention. Then the story moves into Ms. V’s interaction with the students and her co-workers. We meet a good handful of young people struggling with teenage issues including sexual pressures, predatory situations (even in the church), and bullying. There is also a co-worker who is dealing with bitterness and jealousy whose attitude is eventually changed. Ms. V shows consistent and unconditional love to everyone she is in touch with. Her behavior reveals a beautiful character and wonderful legacy all because she is willing to humbly serve her faithful God.

The story is very upbeat and endearing. The writing is direct and an easy read (and listen) for adults and teens. I am sort of curious about the alternate endings in the digital and print versions. I recommend this to any Christian who is looking for an inspirational story. I also recommend it to non-believers who are open minded to such inspiration.

Audio Notes: Anita Faye Thomas does a lovely job with the narration. She brings Ms. V alive and helps draw the listener into the spiritual and physical lives of the characters. I am glad I had the opportunity to listen to this.

Review:
Janner, Tink, and Leeli Igiby are still on the ‘run’ with their mother, grandfather and a few other adult guardians. There are enough dangers on the journey but there are also petty squabbles among the children who have not yet accepted, much less understood their roles as the royal Lost Jewels of Anniera.

There are also dangers from betrayal as it is hard to distinguish friend from foe. Some foes are natural but others are willing to trade loyalties for financial gain or promises of future power. There are new allies but losses to deal with too.

The characters are well defined with good uniqueness. I enjoyed the active adventures experienced by the family. I am listening to this series so I can enjoy the stories with my grandchildren. I was not thrilled with all of the violence and dishonest issues but I think it is good for parents/adults to read/listen to with children so these issues can be discussed. The series is now available to watch through Angel Studios. https://www.angel.com/ I recommend this adventure series to families.

Audio Notes: The author, Andrew Peterson, does a wonderful job on the narration. He delivers distinct voices, appropriate energy, and pacing that fits. I am glad I got to listen to the audio version.

Review:
Brooke wasn’t really ready to move to Portland, Oregon, when she inherited her Aunt’s antique shop there. But the inheritance came with a treasure hunt, so Brooke was intrigued. She was surprised when she found a reindeer calf in her courtyard. Josh, a local Detective and part owner of the Wilding Reindeer Ranch, is suspicious of Brooke when he finds the cute calf drawing in customers to see the reindeer while they shop. He is also surprised to realize that she is a red-wolf like him.

Josh begins to hang around the shop a lot first to investigate how the reindeer got there. Then he remains after Brooke experiences a break in. She was able to overhear the intruders and knows they are hunting something that was sent to her Aunt. Josh and Brooke now have two mysteries to solve as they begin to deal with the attraction drawing them together.

This is an engaging shifter story. I enjoyed the mysteries, the bit of suspense, and the growing romance relationship. There are several intimate scenes that were more detailed than I prefer but those were balanced with the plot mysteries. I found it a little unrealistic that Josh and some other detectives were so readily available but there is leeway in fiction. The story isn't particularly a Christmas story but the reindeer is a nice addition. I recommend this story to readers who enjoy shifter romance with a good side of mystery.

Audio Notes: Mackenzie Cartwright is a good voice for this book. She provides a nice energy and distinct reading even if her male voices aren’t really differentiated. I did enjoy the audio.

Review:
Ms. Crow does a lovely job sharing her love of music and the true struggles of trying to get ‘into the business’. It isn’t a pretty picture. She shares openly about her relationships and heartbreaks. It took a while for her to find a comfortable place that didn’t require her to compromise herself.

I listened to this as a filler while I was up late wrapping presents as I had a plan to start a new book on my car ride up north for Christmas. I am not a huge fan of her songs although I do like her voice. This was a charming memoir and personal glimpse of the artist. I appreciated her forthrightness.

Audio Notes: Sheryl Crow does a good job sharing her own words and touches of music. I always wish for more of the music in these short biographies/memoirs. The nice thing of listening is that there is a good sense of the artist’s voice and you can go listen to more online. I appreciate this was a free audible.

Review:
“Ishmael” doesn’t know his name or his identity. He awoke in a ‘coffin’, like a tanning bed, in a locked room. He soon runs into hostiles and discovers that the world around him is in chaos. As he escapes from the building, he destroys it behind him not knowing how important that chamber was to his recovery.

Ishmael, or Fred as he gets dubbed, has some natural muscle memory that helps keep him alive. He learns clues that send him off to find a former Corporation leader who may be able to help him learn his identity.

I liked Fred’s personality even when he didn’t know who he was. It was clear he was a superhero/warrior of sorts, probably an assassin like Kade in This Fallen World. I was glad that his inclinations were to do good considering the history and reputation of the Corporation assassins.

I really enjoyed the story-telling that fit well even though this is a different author in The Fallen World series. There are good characters, plenty of action, and a sense of humor. Again, the use of “this Fallen World” was fun but the reader has to get used to the repetition as it is used at the end of almost every chapter. I will be looking for more books in the series and more series from this author. I recommend the series and this action packed superhero, post-apocalyptic story.

Audio Notes: Again, Mark Boyett does a wonderful job with the narration. He is one of a handful of narrators I would be willing to search to select books he has narrated. I am thankful to have gotten these books for free for Audible listening.

Lucy is busy with her scientific and botanist tasks. She recently discovered an anti-vampire serum and wants to continue the work on this project. But she is quick to rush to her cousin’s side when she hears that Kate is ill. Kate recently married Jonathan, a younger brother to the dark Lord of Blackwell Manor, Miles. Lucy doesn’t know much about the family but there are rumors that the Lord’s may have been involved in the death of his new wife and his sister shortly after.

Miles is plagued by a family curse that is a closely held secret. He goes to his family’s hunting lodge every month at the full moon – and that is only one of his secrets. He is distressed by the unsolved murder of his wife and the brutal killing of his sister. Miles doesn’t like having strangers around and although he appreciates that Lucy wants to help her cousin, he is not so thrilled to have her snooping around. He also isn’t happy to have his aunt, Lady Charlesworth, and her adult children, Arthur and Candice, swooping in for extended visits whenever they want.

Lucy is sure Miles is hiding something but doesn’t think he is guilty of the murders in his household. Lucy soon believes that Kate is being poisoned. She also suspects that the household robotic servants are being used in the plot. Can she get enough evidence to convince the reclusive Miles to listen to her and take action before it’s too late?

I really liked the complex characters of Lucy and Miles. There is a reluctant attraction that develops slowly as they learn about and begin to trust each other. There is a lovely dance scene that changes the dynamic between them. Miles has some strong friends who are willing to stand with him, including Lucy’s brother. Several of these characters appear in the rest of the series. I enjoyed reading book 3, The Lady in the Coppergate Tower, and I just got the other books from Audible Plus. I like the mix of mystery, steampunk, shifter, and Victorian romance. I recommend this to fans of these genres.

Audio Notes: Saskia Maarleveld does a lovely job with the narration. I liked the accent and the pacing of the delivery. The narration added to my enjoyment of the story.

Review:
The world of humans is cowed and oppressed by demons who stalk the night. The humans rely on magical wards to protect them within their walled cities and homes. But much has been lost in the arts of magic and warding and the demons are making headway. Young (eleven-year-old) Arlen, from an outlying community, gets to meet a brave messenger, Ragen, and his entertaining, but fearful, juggler. A messenger does much more than deliver messages. He is trained to fight and knows how to ward to protect himself and his juggler on the roads at night. The juggler’s job is to entertain the children and crowds while the messenger negotiates for trade goods.

Arlen learns about big cities, mountains, and deserts from Ragen. Arlen begins to believe that he could become a messenger when he grows older. Arlen is small but smart. He was bullied until he learned to outsmart the bullies. Ragen reinforced his young views explaining that men could stand up and fight, though they might die, or they can hide and slowly die as cowardice shames them. After tragedy in his family, Arlen runs away and learns to fight the demons, even injuring a powerful rock demon who becomes his enemy.

Meanwhile, in other chapters, Leesha is a young woman struggling with the thought of becoming nothing more than a ‘brood mare’. She wants to take over her father’s printing business, but then she begins to work with the local healer. Although the healer is considered an old crone, she clearly knows the magic to care for the sick, heal wounds, and set bones.

The third primary character is a young boy, Rojer Inn, who witnessed his parents die as Arrick Sweetsong, the Duke's Herald, hides with Rojer in the bolthole under the Inn. Arrick raises the boy who becomes his apprentice. But Arrick loses his position and Rojer struggles in the streets trying to keep food, instead of alcohol in Arrick’s belly. Rojer suffers from guilt and tends to try to stay under the radar. As he matures, he realizes that he has a magical ability to impact the demons but he doesn’t know how this magic will be used.

The reader/listener anticipates how and when the three protagonists will meet. I got caught up in the world and the intensity of the characters, particularly the very lone warrior, Arlen. I liked his struggles, battles, and development. I did hope that he would find love somewhere in the story.

I initially was reluctant to start such a long book, but I was very glad that I listened to this. I will want to continue in the series at some point. I recommend this to readers who enjoy D&D type fantasy.

Audio Notes: Peter Bradbury does a good job with the narration. I quickly adapted to enjoying his energy and his variety of voices for the characters. The narration made this a better experience for me.

Review:
Georgia Thackery has moved back home with her teenage daughter, Madison. She is fortunate her parents, well respected, tenured college professors, are away on sabbatical, so she can live in the family home while she starts a new job as an adjunct professor. Another big plus of being home is she that she is able to share time with her friend, Sid, the skeleton in the attic.

Georgia thinks it is time to tell Madison about Sid, but ‘he’ isn’t ready. Georgia is willing to follow Sid’s wishes, considering he saved her as a child. Sid hasn’t been out of the house in a long time, and he seizes the chance to go to an anime convention that Madison is going to. While enjoying hiding in plain sight, disguised as a skeleton, Sid sees a woman who triggers memories which is startling since he has no clear memories of who he was ‘in the flesh’.

Sid and Georgia are determined to investigate to discover his identity and his killer. Especially when they learn that the mystery woman is a professor. When they go to speak with her they find her murdered too. Georgia gets some help from another new adjunct professor whose real job is as a journalist. Georgia and Sid also get help from an elderly professor friend who helps them sneak into the College during the night. It becomes clear that they are stirring up trouble when Georgia gets threats, and their professor friend is attacked.

This is really a fun story. I love Sid’s quite but determined character and it is funny how he drops bones when he is depressed. The author does a good job using the plot line to reveal the history of when Georgia and Sid met and how he became part of the family. There are twists in the investigation that keeps it interesting and I learned a lot about the problems of being untenured in the university syestem. I want to read/listen to more in the series. I recommend this to fans of cozy mysteries who like the mix of paranormal and humor with the mystery.

Audio Notes: Katina Kalin does a really nice job with the narration. Although her voice is soft, she provides clear, distinct voices. The narration added to my enjoyment of the story.

Review:
Many years ago the zombie virus started taking over the world. The rare survivors are still struggling to find safe refuge.

Officer Dez Fox is struggling to get a busload of children to a safe camp under control of the National Guard. Then they see the dead passing the bus and realize that these dead are wearing National Guard uniforms. Fox will continue to do whatever it takes to protect these young survivors.

Meanwhile, Rachael Elle is a young woman who has managed to survive the zombie apocalypse in cosplay or LARP gear, fighting the dead “Orcs”. She stumbles upon the bus after Dez has gone out to scout and ends up leading the children by harnessing their superhero inner voices.

Joe Ledger is a career military man who sought to take down Patient Zero. Although he couldn’t stop the virus, he is a legendary warrior against the dead, traveling with the help of a smart warning and killing dog, Captain Joe and Baskerville stumble on the scene and is quick to step into the fray. First he saves a young girl from horrible NKK (New Klux Klan) bad actors. Then he proceeds to fight both enemies, the dead and living, to help the girls save the children.

I’ve read the prequel to this series, so I am aware of the beginnings of Joe Ledger facing the zombie hoard. I enjoyed the startling meeting between Joe and Dez and I appreciated the determination of all three characters to fight the dead and help other survivors. I had not met the two female characters and I will definitely backtrack to find their stories. There is plenty of fast paced action. However, the story is really only about two and a half hours as there is a second, totally unrelated story written by someone else that is tagged on. I am glad I got to listen to this and I will be reading/listening to more in the series. I recommend this to fans of battle action and some snarky character interaction.

Audio Notes: Ray Porter is an excellent narrator. He does such a good job with action and distinct character voices. I would feel comfortable searching out books narrated by Porter, and I could likely enjoy those stories. His narration enhances the story for me.

Review:
Star doesn’t see herself as a strong witch. In fact, she struggles with her training. She takes a job at a funeral home as a makeup artist to the dead. The proper looking funeral director, Ben Kowalski, is sort of hot, but he may think twice about hiring her when he realizes that Star could read his mind if she was so inclined. Then there is the matter that Star is planning to abscond with the latest ‘customer’.

Apparently, the dead body is a golem, a magical construct, rather than a real human. Star has called her former boyfriend, Alex, the area magical enforcer, to deal with the issue. Add to the problem of properly disposing of the golem, there are clear signs the death wasn’t accidental.

As Alex and Star set off to discover the murderer, Ben refuses to be left behind. He is soon exposed to the world of golems, vampires, witches and wizards. Surprisingly he takes it in stride. But now that Ben has seen and heard more about magic than he should have, Star is trying to figure a way to keep Alex from wiping Ben’s memory.

I really enjoyed these characters, their interaction, and the quick mystery. I would love to listen to more, but the regular prices don’t work for such short works. I recommend this fun mystery, especially if you can buy it at a deal price.

Audio Notes: I found the narration by April Doty fit the story well. The male voices aren’t quite distinct, but I didn’t have confusion following the characters. I enjoyed the audio entertainment.

Review:
Neal Danielson is a civilian scientist who is monitoring space data. He identifies an object of question a distance away and requests military clearance for additional data. Although a handful of military leaders questions the data and conclusions, they initially set the report to the side. When eight meteor “rocks” spread out and fall to earth, Neal thinks this is more ominous than anyone will admit. Neal and a new friend scientist friend, Dr. Laurie West, step outside of authority to try to retrieve one of the objects. Laurie is on the investigating ship offshore while Neal waits in the hotel with the boat captain’s girlfriend, Dr. Madeline Cavanaugh.

Neal and Madeline are excited when they get an encrypted message that the scientist suspensions are correct. But then they listen as voices are cut off when the boat is vaporized. Neal and Madeline could report this to the Government authorities, but they realize they would be but into seclusion and no one would be able to share information with the public. Instead, they agree to go into hiding. I was fully engaged and enjoyed the ultimate team of scientists, doctors, military leaders, committed military officers, and aliens with superhuman abilities. I enjoyed the way the story developed and moved about different characters to keep the reader aware of what is going on. I expect that I will continue the series. I recommend this to readers who enjoy first alien contact and spy stories.

Audio Notes: R.C. Bray is a wonderful narrator who delivers strong voices and fitting energy for the characters. His narration always enhances my enjoyment of the work.

Ishmael has now finished his learning at the Academy and is ready to face his first assignment as a junior officer, a Third Mate. He was a little bit surprised but glad to get a job right away even if it is with a lesser-known salvage and transport ship.

Ishmael’s first assignment was as a landlubber on the Lois McKentric where he learned the ropes from the bottom up, did his studies in all areas of the ship, and gained the respect of his shipmates and superiors. He worked with others in the crew to care for the ship and each other. So he is totally surprised and dismayed to arrive at a ship with a crew that ranges from sloppy to antagonistic to oppressed. A senior officer and his handpicked guards are sexually harassing and abusing the women on board, with other crew members being cowed into silence. The Captain turns a blind eye…not only to the abuse but to everything else on the neglected ship.

Ishmael soon begins to use his unique charm and understated method of persuasion to change things on the William Tinker, starting with the coffee and continuing with food and cleanliness.

Ishmael is attractive and well-built but was never drawn to physical types of self-defense. He ends up having to face brute force with his lesser-known skills of Tai Chi. If Ishmael can survive the assignment, will he be able to make a long-term difference for the ship?

Previous books in the series revealed Ishmael’s easy going and smart character. He likes theatre due to his professor mother and he highly respects women. Thanks to his time on the Lois McKentric, Ishmael believes in the well being of the crew as they work to care for the ship. I love this trait and how it plays out with the other crew members.

This is not a series with high physical action, but it is satisfyingly high in mental action. I felt the handling of mental and sexual abuse in a future world was pretty sad, but I was glad there were those, led by Ishmael, who cared to take action. I recommend this series to fans of character-driven Space Opera.

Audio Notes: I really enjoy Jeffrey Kafer’s narration of this series. He portrays Ishmael perfectly and manages the other characters with different accents and energy. The narration enhances my enjoyment of this series.

Review:
Meg Corbyn is a cassandra sangue, a young woman who was trained to cut herself to bring forth prophesies. She managed to escape her handlers and stumbled into the Lakeside Courtyard. She was given shelter and a job by the community leader, Simon Wolfgard, a wolf shifter. The local shifters and elementals (the Others), like Meg and her ‘human’ presence has brought a favorable situation for other humans in the town.

There has been a power-hungry group of humans who want the land and control that have been kept from them by the Others. They have stirred up public sentiment dividing the humans between those who will live peacefully with the Others and those who want to boycott and harm the Others. The radical, hateful humans conspire to attack the Others not realizing the hidden forces that will be impacted and angered. The elementals and hidden forces have to decide ‘how much humanity they are willing to tolerate’. This has several meanings but the most dangerous will be the response triggered when the humans poison the sharks in the ocean and slaughter a pack of wolf shifters as a show of force.

Running in the background of the conflict between the humans and Others, Meg and other cassandra sangue are looking for a way to produce their prophesies without cutting themselves. Sometimes the prophesies are unclear and can be misinterpreted. The young women are finding ways to communicate with each other, as one is drawing images. Meg, with local human friends, realizes that she (as the recognized pathfinder) may be able to develop cards, similar to a tarot deck, for use by herself and others. This developing modification is needed to protect the young women and I like how it is changing through the books.

I enjoy the positive relationship between the Others and the humans in Lakeside Courtyard and the handful of other communities that are cooperative. The racism and hate of the radical group is horrendous. The story has good suspense that kept me interested and engaged. I highly recommend this book in the series. I do recommend reading the series in order to get a clear picture of the nature of the Others, elementals, and the variety of humans.

Audio Notes: Alexandra Harris continues to do a wonderful job on the narration. The voices and characters are clear and distinct. She conveys the emotions of the characters. The audio experience adds to my enjoyment of the story.

Review:
Lady Moira leaves her Castle in Ireland rather than be forced to marry an elder nobleman at the direction of her uncle. Moira takes along her lady’s maid, Gretchen, to travel by boat to New York where she will pick up the paperwork for her homestead claim in the Montana territory. She has no idea how much work a homestead will take but she plans to heir local workers to help. Again, she has no idea how isolated the location is.

When Moira and Gretchen arrive in New York she manages to get the claim paperwork although the situation seems awkward. Then the women arrive in Montana to an empty train station. Finally, a man appears to pick them up and announces that Moira is to marry him. Pryor paid for a mail order bride since he has put the beginning work into his homestead, and he is ready to have a helpmate to begin a family. He is disappointed that Moira says “no” but he knows that he will have to help her if she is to survive the winter until she can return to where she came from.

Moira realizes that her uncle has somehow cheated Pryor with the false bride papers, but she isn’t going to submit to become a wife when that is why she left Ireland behind. She and Gretchen are willing to help cook and clean for shelter, and she has no intention of returning to Ireland. Moira soon realizes she is facing a daunting job to do the work necessary, including fencing, to complete the homestead claim. She had planned one use for the land, but her claimed land isn’t suitable.

Can Moira survive and get her land ready or will she have to return to Ireland? What can Pryor do to convince Moira to stay and accept his help?

I enjoyed these characters and their different but strong foundations of faith. There was interesting detail about the homestead claims and the struggles that the homesteaders had to face. Many did not get to keep the land because they could not fulfill the requirements. The plot has some twists and the romance is sweet. I recommend this to readers who enjoy historical, western romance.

Audio Notes: Charles D. Baker does a very nice job with the narration. He provides clear voices and fitting emotions for each of the characters. I am glad I had this on audio to listen to.

Review:
Zoe is an herbalist and a 'former' alchemist. While unpacking from her move to a deteriorating house in Portland, she is surprised to discover a box with a gargoyle statute. She is more surprised when she realizes the gargoyle is breathing and not a statute at all. Dorian explains that he was brought to life by an alchemist, and he needs an alchemist to help him read a centuries-old text and find a cure for his declining life. Although Zoe is a Vegan, Dorian is hungry and a master of French cuisine. He is willing to cook while she helps him with the deciphering.

Unfortunately, a local teen took a dare to inspect the “haunted house” and he saw Dorian moving and speaking. The local police officer, Detective Liu, is soon called in by the teen’s friends to ‘rescue’ him. Zoe and Dorian try to stress upon Brixton that he cannot tell anyone what he has seen. But of course, a 14-year-old just can’t resist telling his friends and then trying to get pictures to convince them.

Things get more involved when the contractor that Zoe hired is found dead on her doorsteps the next morning. Zoe puts herself in the line of suspects when she promptly tells Detective Liu that the man was poisoned. Zoe explains to Liu that her sense of smell is enhanced due to her plant alchemy and herbal skills but the authorities are skeptical.

I really enjoyed the characters of Zoe, Dorian and even the mysterious Detective Liu. Brixton, on the other hand, was annoying most of the book. The descriptions and prose are nicely done. I found the elements of plant alchemy very interesting. The murder plot is well laid out with a few red herrings. Foodies will enjoy the cooking descriptions. I will get more in the series and I recommend this to fans of cozy mystery and supernatural.

Audio Notes: Julia Motyka does a very nice job with the narration. I felt she captured the emotions and tones of the characters. The audio enhanced my enjoyment of the story.

Review:
Deborah did all the work for her father on a community newspaper while he took all the credit. After her parents deaths, Deb is determined to set out on her own without being under the thumb of a man. Deb and her sister are helping a family take two toddlers west. The four are off in the bushes when the wagon train is attacked. The outlaws left behind arrows to look like an Indian attack, but no one knows that Deborah saw the men and can identify at least one by face and another by voice.

Trace survived as a young teen when his father was murdered during a wagon train attack. Since then, he has become a ghostly, self-appointed guardian of the trail, with his horse Black and his dog Wolf, trying to protect travelers from attacks. He comes across a recent attack that appears to be by the same men who killed his father years before. This triggers his urge to seek revenge by pursuing the men. That plan is delayed as he rescues the two young women and the toddlers and takes them to his cabin which is the only local shelter. Trace has rarely been around women. He and his ranch hands learn they like having the girls clean and cook for them, but Trace is still setting out to hunt down the killers.

Deborah plans to continue traveling west when the winter is over but in the meantime, she insists on going to town with Trace so she can report the truth of the attack and help identify the outlaws. Trace and Deborah don’t realize that their discussion of the outlaws is overheard by one of the men. Now they are targets.

Can Trace control his urge for vengeance and still keep the girls and children safe? Will Deb being able to change her mind about sharing life with a man?

I totally enjoyed this story. It isn’t perfect as it has some contrived situations. Still, I liked the distinct characters, the setting, the gentle faith, and the sweet romance. I like this author and need to read/listen to her stories more often. I recommend this to fans of sweet historical romance.

Audio Notes: I enjoyed the narration by Morgan Hallett. Although she doesn’t really do great male voices, I was able to tell who was talking and I could tell when she was reading an internal thought. I would be fine listening to more in the series narrated by Ms. Hallett.

Review:
These two books continue to tell the stories of several groups of survivors. Dan and his group are traveling through Europe to get to Africa where Emma believes she can find a cure to help Melissa (Dan’s woman) safely deliver their baby. They face killing marauders, lose supplies and become separated along the way. Having heard a radio message, they seek a fortified town called Sanctuary. When some of the survivors reach Sanctuary they need to prepare the town for the evil that may follow them.

Meanwhile, the original home base has been taken over by a fascist military leader who controls his troops by fear. Steve and the remaining members of the group have been captured and the others are conscripted into various jobs while Steve recovers with a doctor who agrees secretly to help lead a rebellion coup.

There are four young people who escaped from the troops who head out to find Dan. At least one of them, Chris is angry and blames Dan for leaving the home base insufficiently protected. This group is captured by the vicious marauders who almost captured Dan. Two of them are horribly torture before they break free.

I found these books to be very realistic which includes danger, oppression, torture and other traumatic events. There was a point where I wanted to have a better result for the good guys, but I had to continue in hopes of victories. There is some swearing and, of course, brutality. I recommend this series to true fans of post-apocalyptic adventure.

Audio Notes: I always enjoy the narration of R.C. Bray. He conveys distinct voices and energy that fits the scenes of the story. His narration enhanced my enjoyment of this story.

Review:
Andien grew up under a marine father who was an elite member of the Legion. Andien may have to push herself harder, but she can shoot better than most men and she can take most of them on for one-on-one combat. Always remembering her father's words: "Forget nothing", she has been advanced in rank on her own merit.

Andien and her troop are serving on a foreign planet where they are assigned to protect the locals and colonists from hostiles in the wild. Unfortunately, it that turns out the worst hostiles are a gathering of revolutionary, terrorist colonists. Her crew has to team up with the Legionnaires assigned to the planet. The Legion men have all the tech and enhancements but this group, not like others, is appreciative of Andien’s efforts.

When negotiations for Republic marines ends up agreeing to allow women to join the Legion, Andien’s name is submitted as a candidate. She is encouraged by others, but she has to decide if she is willing to work extra hard to go in the first class.

I did enjoy all of the action, strategy and tactics in this book. I like Andien and the supporting characters. Although it is set in a series, it is set in a different time and place and does not continue the characters from the other books. I enjoy this author and have more to listen to in the series. I recommend this shorter story to fans of space and high tech military action.

Audio Notes: I enjoyed the narration by Khristine Hvam. She provided distinct voices and good energy. I am glad I had this in audio.
