Sharing Beyond Books #109 Comment Giveaway July 20, 2013

Hello again on Saturday night and Welcome to SBB, Sharing Beyond Books.

For some reason I am very tired tonight so I am getting this post up and then heading to dreamland. (I'll post winners of book giveaways tomorrow or Monday.)

Thank you to all who shared last week.

Many of us, 8, like to read both Cowboy and Highlander; 7 prefer Highlanders and 5 prefer cowboys. And one doesn't read either. :-)

Only three of us have actually gone geo-caching. Many had never heard of it so I am glad I could tell you of a fun activity to try. Apparently the majority of the locations are in US but there are a couple in UK.

The Winner from SBB #108 comments is: #16 Liss who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the ARC/Review titles, Christmas titles or Love titles - all linked near the end of the post.  Please let me know your choice by completing the (new) WINNER FORM.

WEEK #109 Questions

Q1. Nikki asks: Do you read Japanese/Korean manga (comic books)??
A: A few years ago I would not have known what 'manga' was but thanks to blogging I do know. However - I haven't read any.
This is credited as the first manga magazine.

Q2. My non-bookish Question to go along with Q1: Do you watch anime movies??
A: I have seen some anime movies -- thanks to my son! I guess the one that comes to mind is Princess Monoke,  a 1997 Japanese animated epic historical fantasy.

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! We can always use fresh questions. I do have a group of questions from the same submitters so if you have a question don't be afraid to ask!

  10. 1 - No I've never read a manga comic, but I've seen some depictions online - I'll have to see if I can find one to check out
2 - haven't seen a anime movie but I used to watch something years ago that I think would be classified as anime - I can't remember what it was called. Do they show anime on cable?

    1. "Do they show anime on cable?"

Cartoon Network shows some anime shows/films.
Encore WAM! shows some anime series.
Encore Action has a segment called "Ani-Midnight", where they air a couple episodes of anime once or twice a week.

Other cable channels may show anime as well, but I am unsure, since I have Dish Network service now. I just remember these from when I had Comcast cable a few years ago.

  15. I read manga from time to time. I really enjoyed Descendants of Darkness several years ago. I started reading Gundam, but that is a very long series.

Same thing with anime - I watch it from time to time. Princess Mononoke is a favorite.

  18. 1) I read a lot of manga in High School! I loved to read and they were the newest thing so I really for into them. I liked how you read them backwards and they had images. It was different!

    2) I have never really watched anime movies or shows. My brother does, he loves them, so once in a while I'll catch several minutes of some, but I have never watched it fully.

  19. I used to read Sakura Card Captors but I had a headache so I prefer just to watch the anime series.

I do watch a lot of anime movies, Princess Mononoke is one of my favorite. But the one I truly love is Howl's Moving Castle, if you haven't watch it I recommend it to you. I love another ones, like Spirited Away, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Final Fantasy: Advent Children and Grave of the Fireflies (This one is really sad)

  20. Thanks for using my question Martha!

Q1. OF COURSE! Since I asked the question. I love and collect a few manga series. The only bad thing about collecting mangas is that I have less time and money for English books. But luckily they take a really short time to get through.

Q2. Yup. Movies and series! Love them. Howl's Moving Castle is really good!! Am loving a swimming anime series right now called Free! It just started so there's just a few episodes for now. Very light watching. Although you might laugh your head off or get a few nosebleeds.

    1. Just out of curiosity....which manga series do you collect, Nikki?

  21. Q1. Nikki asks: Do you read Japanese/Korean manga (comic books)??
Yes, somewhat obsessively, as in they are most of what I read these days. Here's my Goodreads manga/GN shelf: http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/9861836?shelf=mangas
I want to correct Nikki a little on her terminology, not in a mean way though. Manga is only for Japanese language graphic novels. Korean language graphic novels are called manhwa. And, though Nikki didn't mention them, Chinese language graphic novels are called manhua. Of course, this is only if the GN is from said country, as there are actually Chinese versions of most popular manga series. And, it is actually proper to call translated versions of Japanese mangas/Korean manhwas by these names (manga/manhwa), even if they are in English.
Manga collecting can be expensive, if you buy them all new, as volumes tend to run from $7.99 to $12.99 each for singles and around $25-$30 for 3-in-1 omnibus editions. I recommend buying them secondhand. That's how I achieved my collection, and I probably own 400+ volumes.

Q2. My non-bookish Question to go along with Q1: Do you watch anime movies??
Yes, I do, and I highly recommend all of Studio Ghibli's movies. Since I see you like "Mononoke Hime", I think you would love "Spirited Away" as well. My favorite SG film is "Whisper of the Heart", which is a very touching story. It also has a companion film that features the Baron called "The Cat Returns". I recommend you both of them.
Another lesser-known, but still great, anime film is "Yosei Florence", which I watched in English under the title "A Journey Through Fairyland". The music in it is wonderful. It's quite a bit like the Disney movie, "Fantasia", except that it has one story throughout instead of many.
If you watch any certain anime series, I recommend you watch the movies that are part of it as well. The movies are often sidestories, like the "Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon" films, but can also be part of the storyline that is referenced later as well. All the "popular" animes (Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Fairy Tail, K-On!) have movies.
I don't watch anime series much, anymore, since none of them seem to keep my attention as much these days. They become perverted, full of T&A, or seem to center around a nerdy guy having all the beautiful girls crazy about him, or seem to be full of filler episodes that are boring and non-essential to the plot. I wish there would just be another good music-based anime released like "K-On!!" or "La Corda d'Oro" or the many "Pretty Rhythm" series. Also, I'm waiting for the release of the new "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon" anime in 2014. Until some good animes start coming out again, I have plenty of mangas to take up my time. ☺

Sorry I went on and on, kinda rambling there, but I hope I answered your questions well enough.
Also, on a quick note, be sure to look into anime OSTs (Original SoundTracks) and videogame OSTs, as alot of them feature some of the most beautiful and relaxing music you will ever hear.
