Review:
Captain Joe Farley and his WWII flight crew are relieved to get a new B17 when their first one barely limps into base. They name their new plane Fata Morgana and Joe describes a mysterious woman to be painted on the nose. They pick up a new crew member, a Native American who bailed from his plane which shockingly arrived back to base with an all dead crew.

The crew is part of a bombing mission during which the formation comes under attack by German bombers. Suddenly the Fata Morgana is pulled into a dark cloud and spit out into a desolated world. The planet appears devastated and the crew is alarmed when two opposing teams converge on them, one trying to protect them and the other attacking them. It appears the teams are from two rival colonies who are trying to get the plane for their own use. And that these people are not the worst enemy they will face.

The wisecracking crew members are stranded unless their mechanic wizard can get the plane working again. Meanwhile they are all surprised, especially Joe, when the woman of his dreams appears in front of them! She convinces them to return to her community but not everyone is as welcoming as she is. The crew makes friends but will have to survive betrayal to have a future.

The story starts a little slowly as the authors introduce and develop the crewmembers. There is fun banter and baseball camaraderie shared even during the stresses of war. The battle scenes are well written with action and tension. Once the plane crashes in the other world there are totally different tensions and conflicts the crew must face. I liked the well-developed characters, the action, the romance and the plot twists. The romance grows slowly and warmly to mature to a point of heartbreak. There is a strange scene involving limited characters around the center of the time whirlwind. This gives some of the surprising background of the world. I anticipated the betrayal but didn’t see all of the twists which made it interesting.

This isn’t as good as my favorite alternate history/universe series, The Destroyermen series, but it was a fun, fill-in listen. I recommend this to readers/listeners who enjoy World War II era and/or the alternate history genre.

Audio Notes: Macleod Andrews does a wonderful job with the narration. He captures the variety of character accents and energies. His narration helped to bring the story alive. The narration enhanced the story for me and I would be glad to listen to more by this narrator.

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost EIGHT years I have posted 82 groups of 16 plus an additional 21 totaling 1,333 books to find new homes! (as of November 9, 2018).

I am happy to say that so far about 1,260+ books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A year or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. Review:
Lenora an 11-year-old left home is bored with the nanny who is dragging her around visiting the nanny’s friends and shopping for items the nanny wants. Finally, the nanny stops at the library and Lenora perks up. She slips away from nanny to visit the children’s section of the library and what an adventure she finds!

Lenora helps a boy trying to get into a strange, mysterious hall in the library. Lenora slips into a library through a door with a sign that says: Knowledge is a light. Lenora runs into a Chief Librarian who tells Lenora she must leave. But Lenora convinces the Librarian to give har a job as a Fourth Assistant Apprentice Librarian. Lenora is directed to use her imagination, be resourceful and show courage. She is placed first at the Calendar Help Desk so she can learn important dates in history. She begins learning interesting details but is soon dragged off by a robot to help a kingdom in the future! When she returns to her desk Lenora is promoted to Third Assistant and moves on to another help desk. Her adventure continues through several departments where she learns new facts and helps creatures including penguins, ants and cats. She visits the future, outer space, the globe and ancient Egypt. As the adventure moves along, Lenora is confronted by an enemy who wants to stop her and, even worse, wants to destroy knowledge. What can Lenora do to help fight the enemy that is trying to bring darkness?

The journeys are fantastical and the reader learns fun facts along the way. I found the story delightful and think it would be wonderful for the intended audience of middle graders. It might be better enjoyed if read in sections as it is rather busy and fast paced. Still, it is well worth the fun reading experience.

Review:
Cassidy can read history by touching objects. She is part of a group of friends who protect Charleston from supernatural threats. Her gentle business partner, Teag, uses Weaver magic to create fabrics that heal and protect. His personal partner is a local police officer who is aware of the magical world but tries to operate without making the magic known to the public. Sorren is the senior business partner as a 600-year-old vampire who has years of knowledge and connections in the supernatural realm.

Charleston is experiencing an unprecedented rise in supernatural activities. Cassidy and friends are already looking into a ghostly horse hunt going on with the alarming sound of galloping horses and baying dogs. Then they are asked to investigate when several hunting horses go missing by vanishing at the local horse hunting stable. Cassidy and Teag are soon dodging zombies from the cemetery and working around citizens with a “grouch flu”. Next Cassidy suffers a firsthand attack and her friends, plus a master weaver and local witch, gather to face the dark threat.

Clues lead to an angry weaver-witch who is seeking to raise a powerful Norse warlock so she can take revenge against those who have hurt her – particularly some in the horse community. It will take all the resources Cassidy and friends can pull together, including some from Sorren’s past, in order to prevail in this magical battle.

I enjoyed the fast action of the story. This is the first story I have read in the series, so it took me a little bit to sort through the many characters. Cassidy and her friends are well developed characters. None are presented as ‘superheroes’ on their own but they make a formidable team. The plot is well written with twists and turns to pursue to uncover the source of the evil and locate the hidden villains. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy fast-paced Urban Fantasy.

What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

Work went along well. My assistant was out two days with sick children.

We celebrated our daughter's birthday this week with pizza and cake at the office. She is the one in the middle. She is thirteen months younger than our son.

Hubby's testing got a good clear report: no new heart blockages. It seems the problems now are related to the fact that his lunds are not operating properly. He has to rely on the oxygen more and more which is frustrating for him.
Our weather here continues to be hot. I hope everyone stays safe during these hot days.

I had a very good week of reading with a day waiting in hospital giving me a few extra hours. I finished six titles: 3 audiobooks and 2 ebooks and 1 childrens ebook. I posted four reviews on the blog and posted my usual memes.

I visited 18 blogs again last week.
Shout Out this week to Pixireads. Sarah is a reviewer, maybe future author. She seems to like some fantasy that I like too.

July 21, 2019 - I am still enjoying the devotions and readings with the One Year Bible plan through You Version App. I fnished a 5 day study, Quiet Time for the Soul. I plan to start a new study tonight. [You can check out audio of the One Year Bible Plan on the companion commentary online.]

I completed six books and posted four reviews. I have three reviews to post this week.
I have been adding newer reviews to NetGalley, Goodreads, Amazon and Audible. (Eventually I will add older reviews.)
My NetGalley shelf is at 13 unread. I still have 1 April titles which I will pick up next. [Plus I have 4 old titles (2012-13.)]
I still have four author ebook titles in queue and I still hope to read at least one this month.
