I felt like I completed some work this week. Still more to do -- always.

My reading/listening time was good. I finished four books: two ebooks, one audio and one galley/format for eTP. I am far along in the next audio. I posted three reviews, plus my usual memes.

October 22, 2017 - I am back reading on track in the One Year Bible, and caught up now! I have been reading along with my husband and others from our church. I hope to take more time this year, staying on the day and listening to the companion commentary online.

I completed three books and posted three reviews. That keeps me up to date.
I need to link the last two weeks of reviews to Goodreads, Amazon and Audible.
I added two NetGalley titles to bring that shelf to 13. I realized I had two author titles in my queue; one wasn't on my list.

Sunday Words of Encouragement October 22, 2017

We enjoyed another lovely Sunday of fellowship and message. Our substitute Sunday School teacher shared a youtube video of Jonathan Cahn sharing highlights from his newest book, The Paradigm. I will be looking to pick this book up soon, probably at Audible.

We had nice praise and worship music and pastor started a new series: Illuminate, a Galatians Series.

Pastor shared two experiences from his youth when he went through some tunnels - literally. If you have ever ridden a bike or even walked through a dark tunnel you know the relief when you see the light at the end of the tunnel.

When Paul wrote the letter to the Galatians it was intended to provide clarity on the Christian teachings of the day. Believers have been admonished to make sure that the preaching and teaching they are receiving measures up to God’s Word. It should always be consistent with the Bible.

Paul had preached to the Galatians before leaving to preach elsewhere. There were a group of Judaizing teachers who were trying to pull the Christians back to the law insisting that converts to Christianity must first be circumcised to comply with the Law of Moses.

Paul addresses two issues in the first chapter of Galatians. He reminds the believers that his (Paul’s) authority to speak and teach came from Jesus as a direct revelation (Acts 9). His teaching was not by human authority. This gives him authority to challenge contrary teachings. Galatians 1:1-2, 11-24.

The second and more important issue he discusses is the purity of the gospel message. Galatians 1:6-7.

Satan is always at work to distort the message. Humans are always drawn back toward two things: the law and/or the flesh. But the Gospel is incredibly simple: Salvation is found only in Jesus.

The Point: The purity of the simple Gospel is primary. Everything else is secondary.

We need to fall in love with the simple Gospel again! Loving the gospel means loving Jesus. We were given the awesome, greatest gift. Christ continues to stand at the door and knock to call sinners. When we open the door of our heart we are taken from being a slave of sin to become a child of God. God opens the future, the mission He has for you.

Ask yourself: Why am I here this day? Our purpose is found in the Gospel!

This song came to my mind as a perfect fit for today’s message.

Galatians 1:3-4 (NIV)
3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Lord, I thank you for the simplicity of the Gospel: Jesus died for my sins and when I accepted the gift of His salvation I became a child of God!

Oh so many I enjoy: cheesecake, shoo fly pie, pecan pie, cherry pie, butter pecan ice cream with caramel sauce, hot fudge sunday, berry tart, melting chocolate cake, caramel flan.... I have to pick only one?? Hard choice but I will pick a moist carrot cake with buttercream icing - yumm!

Review:
Daphne may be an heiress but she is a down to earth young lady you is happy living in the small Iowa community of Bethlehem Springs in 1918. Most people would thing that a wealthy young woman would want to return to the society circles of the east coast, but not Daphne. She is happy living near her brother and her lovely sister in law. But Daphne’s seemingly simple life hides a secret. She has a secret connection to a popular dime store novel series which features an infamous character known as Rawhide Rick.

Joshua Crawford is a newspaper man from St. Louis who has trouble controlling his temper. He has lost his job after lashing out at a co-worker for maligning Joshua’s beloved grandfather, Richard. Joshua determines to travel to Bethlehem Springs to confront the author of the Rawhide Rick dime store novels that portray his grandfather as a villain rather than the God loving, generous man that Joshua was raised by.

Joshua is lucky to get a job at Bethlehem Springs where he meets the surprising Daphne McKinley. He doesn’t understand why the wealthy young lady is staying in this small town, but he enjoys her intelligent and outgoing character. Daphne finds the newsman attractive but is concerned about his inquiries trying to find an author no one knows.

Daphne and Joshua soon have an uneasy but growing friendship as they try to maintain secrets and distance. She doesn’t want to reveal her secrets and he doesn’t want to get involved with a lovely young woman when he plans to return home where he has a young lady waiting who expects a marriage proposal.

Daphne has a strong faith that she is not afraid to share with Joshua. Joshua was raised in a Christian household but has avoided faith issues since losing his grandfather. The faith that Daphne holds will pull at Joshua as they face an unexpected difficulty and isolation.

Ms. Hatcher provides strong, likeable characters and a believable storyline with light humor and sound faith. The romance starts with conflict and grows nicely with respect and sweetness. The story reads easily and provides several lovely faith messages regarding forgiveness, judging others and redemption. I recommend this to readers who enjoy historical and inspirational romance.

I selected this book last year in print from Christianbook.com for Ladies Book Club so it counts as a TBR, I think. I did pick it up as ebook so I could get it read quicker.

Review:
I enjoyed coming back to these characters. The conflict continues between the Martians and the 1909-10 version of the US forces under the commander in chief, Theodore Roosevelt.

The Americans are improving their technology, but it is still not enough. They may have a few successful encounters but the battles are still being controlled by the Martians. The Martians target the transport systems (railroads) in order to limit the tanks and other equipment that the humans can bring to the fight.

The story follows the primary characters from book one, both US and Martian. Andrew Comstock has been promoted and is still working in the ordinance department to help develop improved weapons that can increase the American chances in the war. He travels from D.C. to Niagara Falls to observe Tesla testing the Martian lasers. Then he travels to Santa Fe where he is commanded to head a force in the field.

The young farm girl who survived the battle in book one has become a nurse who longs to fight the Martians up close and personal. She is very close to the front lines and involved in caring for physical and mental injuries inflicted upon prisoners who are rescued from the Martian home hold.

Qetjnegartis is a Martian warrior in the home hold who is fighting for his race. He has a “bud” (an infant) whom he is training as one of the replacement corps. The Martians have their own reasoned strategy as they fight for survival and, sadly and frighteningly, elimination of the human population.

Mr. Washburn writes a convincing and engaging plot. He has developed likeable characters, US and Martians. The story has good action and interesting social growth and interaction. I recommend this to fans of the original story (War of the Worlds) and those who enjoy engaging sci fi. I look forward to more in the series.

Audio Notes: Ray Greenley does a wonderful job with the narration. He provides strong, distinct voices and carries the action forward. The narration enhances the story for me.

I received this Audiobook from the narrator as a follow up to the first book. :-)

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost seven years I have posted 68 groups of 16 (1,088) books to find new homes! (as of November 4, 2016).

I am happy to say that so far about 1,109!+ books have found new homes! YAY. I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. Review:
This story opens with an intense sniper reconnaissance scene where Sofia and Duane meet in a sniper blind. She is a complete surprise to him, while she is expecting a team. Their acerbic banter is engaging from the get go. Sofia is an aloof, intel analyst who wanted to be on site when the special ops team arrives. She is impressed with Duane’s precision in preparation and execution of the take down.

Duane quickly observes that Sofia is smart, skilled and capable in addition to being stunning. His growing interest in her sort of blind sides him and the situation only gets worse as she remains with the team as they zip from one mission to another…to another. Then Sofia invites Duane home where they face another tense situation.

There is plenty of intense action in at least three settings that are well plotted and fast moving. I found the detailed description of Caracus very interesting. There is a good balance with the strong romance element. Duane and Sofia are passionate characters accustomed to their independence as revealed in their difficult family backgrounds. They move cautiously in spite of the obvious draw that escalates into an intense relationship without being overtly graphic. Their conflicted feelings begin to create difficulties in the team dynamics and have to be dealt with.

The author presents technical details on guns, boats and helicopters. This will either be interesting to the reader or can be skimmed after recognizing that it fits the characters. There is some profanity which for me is not necessary but can also be skimmed.

I am always confident that I will find an engaging story with strong romance in Mr. Buchman’s works. The story includes a battle against the terrors and evils of human trafficking. In an afterword the author encourages donations to the causes fighting those evils which is certainly commendable. I recommend this book and this author’s work to romance readers who like military elements and strong male and female characters.

I am pleased to have received this from the author for an honest review.

I continue to try to complete work projects every day. I was out half a day this week for a luncheon in Bay County and to view office space for our branch office. That of course meant I missed an afternoon to work. :-( Fortunately I am feeling better.

My reading/listening time was good. I finished three books: two ebooks and one audio. I am far along in the next ebook too. I posted only two reviews, plus my usual memes.

I visited 30 blogs during the week including some brand new to me.

October 15, 2017 - I am back reading on track in the One Year Bible, and caught up to one day behind for the September reading. I have been reading along with my husband and others from our church. I hope to take more time this year, staying on the day and listening to the companion commentary online.

I completed three books and posted two reviews. That keeps me up to date.
I need to link current reviews to Goodreads, Amazon and Audible.
I am still at 12 NetGalley titles. Now one author titles in my queue, with a few requests I am considering.

Sunday Words of Encouragement October 15, 2017

We had a good Sunday School lesson with our substitute leader. We celebrated communion and the Pastor delivered his final Sermon on Tension. (After church we had a lovely congregational picnic.)

Accept the tension. Where there is tension, there is power. Tension brings us to a decision point.

If you have ever been to a Sleep Number store, you know that you test the bed. As you adjust the controls, there is a point where the body relaxes. It finds a comfort zone. There is a different point of comfort to suit different people. We each tend to find our own spot of comfort, rest, and safety.

But tension can bring opportunity. For the Christ follower, the comfort zone is the most dangerous place to be.

Soldiers who fought for freedom know part of natural tension. People at home remember the fight for freedom with celebrations and apple pie. But if we truly begin to forget the cost of freedom, God can kick us out of our comfort zones.

The Holy Spirit is the comforter, because we need comfort when we experience tension. Jesus sent the disciples out as lambs among wolves and told them to take nothing with them. Luke 10: 1-4. Would we go with nothing if He sent us? Jesus mission does not provide a comfort zone.

1 King 19:19-21 tells how Elijah went and found Elisha to train under him. Elisha killed his oxen and burned his plow, his former work implements, to destroy any backup plan as he stepped forward into God’s plan.

Positive tension is created when we become a Christ follower. As followers we are to do more than coming to church each Sunday.

Point: Power is not in the comfort zone. The power is in the tension created when we step out of the comfort zone.

Jesus adjures us to take up our cross daily and follow Him. Luke 9:23. It is a daily thing. When was the last time you took up cross?

Matthew 14 tells the story about Jesus walking on water and surprising the disciples in the boat. Peter was the only one who said, “call me out”. Stepping out of the boat most of us would immediately sink, but Peter stepped out and only began to sink after a few steps. There comes a time to get out of the boat instead of letting the work boat become a cruise ship.

Do you just talk about God or do you step out? The cross is no place of comfort.
Take up your cross, today and the next, and the next. God has power for you.
Lean into the tension; create the opportunity. Take the gospel out each day.

Lord, help me to step out of the comfort zone and carry the cross for You each day.

Review:
This is book 11 of this engaging alternate history series. The story follows the adventures, and continued battles, of WWII destroyer, the USS Walker, and its enemy, the Japanese battlecruiser Amagi. Both ships were pulled by a storm into a different Pacific Ocean. In this alternate Earth, the continents are populated by giant lemur-like beings known as Lemurians, and their brutal, cannibalistic enemy, the lizard (or dinosaur)-like Grik.

The Americans, led by Captain Reddy, have trained the peaceful Lemurians so they can defend themselves against the Grik. The Lemurians are now busy building new ships, planes and weapons for the upcoming battles.

During the battles and explorations of their new surroundings, they have discovered that various ships from other countries and years of our history have been pulled into this alternate world. There are British, Spanish, German, French and more.

At this point Captain Reddy and the Alliance are spread out on numerous fronts. There is a group pursuing the wicked Dominions, while other groups are out seeking aid from ancient Lemurian tribes. Some ships are moving into position for the next battle and one ship has been sent out to explore beyond the explored lands. A new player has entered the local field, a coalition known as the League of Tripoli. The Alliance members don’t know if the League are friend or foe, but their actions in this episode will set them at odds with Captain Reddy.

The previously barbaric and drone-like armies of the Grik have begun to change and learn with the help of the Japanese and from the battles they have been engaged in. This is creating dangers for the Alliance but also creating interesting tension within the Grik forces. Meanwhile, the mad Japanese commander, Kurokawa, has a ship to replace the Amagi, and he is making his own plans for revenge.

The story follows at least seven threads of characters. There are battle scenes but also there are scenes of preparation, exploration and confrontation. I was glued to my earplugs to learn what would happen with each team. I enjoy the character interactions and am finding the growth of the Griks, especially General Halick, interesting. Once again I am impressed with Mr. Anderson’s wonderful imagination. I am glad I already have book 12 in my Audible library. I highly recommend the series, and the audios, to readers who enjoy alternate history and battle stories with well-developed characters.

Audio Notes: William Dufris does his usual great job of narration. He manages all the numerous character voices, accents and nuances, so the story becomes alive. I love listening to this series on audio.
