Review:
Minnie’s father is the head of an outlaw motorcycle gang in California. When Minnie was young, her father kept the outlaw ‘lieutenants’ away with strict orders: they could protect her but Not touch her.

Minnie became a super model and moved to New York where she could live her life without her unusual family. Minnie’s brother, Crash, is a bit on the wild side. He knew Mike in the army and introduced Minnie to Mike. She is crazy about the 6’6” hulking, ex-military man who now runs a security business.

Minnie’s father, Snake, unexpectedly invites Big Mike to join them for Christmas. Minnie is fearful that Snake will take Mike into the desert to kill him for being with daddy’s ‘little girl’. Mike is willing to take his chances and promises that he won’t fight anyone. Really – it takes a lot to rile him.

When the pair arrive in California they discover that Snake has also invited three of his lieutenants and removed the earlier restrictions. These circumstances may just lead to situations that rile Big Mike – at least a little.

The entire story is a hoot! The handling of the ‘competition’ by Mike and Minnie is hilarious! The characters are very likeable and the story plot is complete even for a short novella. Maybe it isn’t great literature—but it sure is quick, fun entertainment. This does not need to be limited to Christmas reading although the setting fits the fun. To quote Crash “Best Christmas ever!” I would like to try a longer story by Ms. Kelly. I highly recommended this for readers who want quick laughs and smiles.

Review:
Caitlyn was a child model ‘managed’ by her determined mother. Caitlyn was prone to eating disorders in her attempt to stay thin enough to suit her mother and the camera. She was excited to get a break from her parents when she married Grant, an up and coming music star. But it didn’t take long for the romance to wear thin while he was on the road with his band. He partied hard and was caught in unfaithful situations. Caitlyn chose divorce and, with the warm, steady support of her ex-in-laws, she went into rehab to get her own life on track.

Caitlyn was pregnant when she and Grant separated and he has taken no time to be with her or their son. She has accepted the invitation from her ex-in-laws to spend Christmas with their family (minus Grant). The small town is in full festival mode with seasonal events organized by her ex-mother-in-law and ex-father-in-law, who is the Mayor. Caitlyn is warmly greeted by Grant’s older brother, Ridge.

Ridge has had his own marital troubles with an ex-wife who battered his ego. He is thrilled to help Caitlyn and her eight-month-old son. His affections grow as they spend time together and he becomes even more protective of mother and son when Grant shows up unexpectedly. Grant is clearly up to something, putting suspicions in Caitlyn’s mind and making it clear he is interested in winning her back, even if she comes with a small creature that he has no idea how to handle.

The story-line may not be new but it is nicely handled with the Christmas events making a busy backdrop. The story is told in third person pov but alternates with some scenes focused on Ridge, although most are with Caitlyn. This read very quickly and I liked the little bit of mystery the author built into Grant’s presence. I particularly enjoyed how she revealed and resolved his issues with a bit of light religious reminders. There is a nice blend of the true focus of Christmas with some sweet Christmas magic.

This is a light, enjoyable romance that I recommend, especially to those who enjoy a “Hallmark” like story. I liked the cover a lot too. I would like to try more titles by Ms. Walker, especially when I am in the mood for a clean, sweet romance.

Review:
Five college friends have begun their final year. Jesse, Izzy, Ava, Randy and, their regularly late friend, Kevin, meet on Thursday nights to share college life over a meal, card games, songs and laughter. The setting is college sparse, mismatched but cozy. The young people, especially the boys, often challenge each other with pranks. During one night’s banter one of the young men shares wisdom imparted from his grandfather. He asked the young man to ponder this perspective on life: “What if—in the end—wealth isn’t defined by what we’ve accumulated? What if it’s decided by how much we give away while we’re here?”

One morning a rush to class results in tragedy, taking the life of one of the most cheerful of the Thursday Night crew. Their grief is shared by one of their teachers who challenges them to show kindness to honor the memory of their friend. The new challenge – to win the pot of four quarters – is to do the kindest deed before Christmas. It is to be anonymous and they cannot spend their own money in the deed.

Each of the four remaining friends find creative and beautiful ways to honor their fallen companion. Although the goal is set for reveal at Christmas time, this is a story that is timeless in its wonderful messages. There are tidbits of positive life statements shared through the story that make this heartwarming and encouraging – even through loss.

The novella reads quickly; the dialogue is easy and fits the college aged characters. I highly recommend this for enjoyment and edification! I look forward to reading more by Mr. Manchester and am pleased I have his upcoming release, Ashes, for tour review in March, 2017.

What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I through this past week with a cold. I tried to get to bed early every night. Friday we has a scheduled Christmas party but we called off since I had a fever much of the day and didn;t want to share that! I didn't have as much free time as I hoped as staff set up numerous last minute appointments.
Our weather has warmed back to 80s but we have had rain.I had this post 3/4ths complete at 10:30 when I took a break to make the coffee for tomorrow morning. When I returned to finish the wet lines made the process drag. I could type a whole line before seeing the first word. Aargh!

Reading was good, some while traveling and some extra in bed when I woke during the nights with my stuffy head. I finished three ebooks and one audiobook. I posted three reviews and the usual memes.

I only got to visit minimally early in the week; had hoped to go around later but my health never worked out.
No shout out this week.

December 4, 2016 - I used audio time this past week to get caught up to date on my Bible reading.
I have been enjoying listening to the companion commentary online when I am home.
I am reading The One Year Bible again along with my husband and others from our church.

I posted three reviews which still keeps me a bit behind; six to be posted.

I still plan to request audio titles as I can always squeeze listening in!
I now have 8 NetGalley Titles and 10+ author titles in my queue. Clearly most of them are going into 2017!

Sunday Words of Encouragement December 18, 2016

Our Sunday School teacher provided a summary of how Christmas and traditions came to be. Most importantly he noted that: Before there was sin in man, God provided a plan for redemption (Genesis 3:15). Then he shared the birth of Jesus from the gospel of Luke. This fit perfectly with Pastor’s sermon.

Pastor continued with the Celebrate series for December.
December 4th: Celebrate the Promise.
However many promises there are in the Bible, be it 5000, all are true.
December 11th: Celebrate the Gift.
Today, December 18th: Celebrate the Savior.

Pastor noted that his old home state of Wisconsin is under snow, but we are enjoying balmy 80 degree weather. He and his wife went shopping in Dothan, AL, yesterday and experienced a parking lot along the highway. Next year they will consider shopping online! But, he reminded us,Christmas is not just the festivities – it is much more.

We sometimes under estimate important events and how they will make a change in our lives. When we are young and marry, we might be caught up in the event and may not realize the lifetime commitment that is being made. Most of us did not realize the life changing event of becoming a parent until the doctor placed that howling sweet infant in our arms. When we prepare to purchase a new home, we do not immediately recognize all the hassle of the packing and unpacking, nor do we immediately recognize the permanency that the new home may bring in our lives.

The birth of the Christ child can be like that – an event that is unappreciated or under estimated as to its impact. It is certainly Satan’s goal, and glee, if he can marginalize the reason for the celebration by burying it under festivities and tinsel.

Sermon Point: When we grasp the significance of God's greatest expression of love, we will do more than WELCOME a baby, we will RECEIVE our Savior.

Although many Christmas traditions stem from pagan celebrations, when Constantine established the celebration of the birth of Christ on Christmas day, it was intended to help people focus on a true reason to celebrate. We need to recognize that the birth in a manger was more than the birth of special baby. The event was more than a baby. It was God wrapped in flesh, living among us; fulfilling promises made throughout the Bible (in Genesis 3:15, Isaiah 9:1-7; Micah 5:2). The baby Jesus had one end: to have the sin, guilt, shame and hurt of the world piled on top of him. God moved the stars to announce this special gift. The birth event is a turning point of man's world. But not the birth alone, the live and death of Christ result in an event that changed the world forever.

As much as we should remember baby Jesus on Christmas (the reason for the season) we must go beyond celebrating the baby, and accept Him as Savior. Will we acknowledge and accept our own rebirth to become a child of God? If we have already done so then the best gift we can give to others is to share the joy and the good news off salvation, just as the angels did!

This is a song I had set aside for this season. 

It fits with the message of promise, gift and salvation!

Because next Saturday is Christmas eve I have decided that I will not post then. I do plan to post the last Saturday, and last day of 2016! We greatly enjoyed our Thanksgiving with both of our kids and all the grandkids. I am sorry we can't do that for Christmas. I am looking forward to church service to be held Christmas morning and then spending part of the day with our daughter and her family.
The Christmas season seemed to come in very quickly, perhaps because we were out of town in November. I didn't even get to do office cards this year. DH did buy a tree today and we strung the lights and hung favorite ornaments. We still have the same angel tree topper from our first Christmas together, now 31 years ago. I think most of the shopping is done and I will start wrapping tomorrow.

Review:
Tōru is a young fisherman from Japan who went was shipwrecked on a fishing trip with his father. Tōru was picked up by Americans and spent two years living with Americans who welcomed him and shared their love of freedom as well as their technology. He returns to Japan in 1852, to a country that forbids the return of anyone who has left the country, even if unwillingly. He hopes to sneak in but is caught and brought to the local Lord. The law says he must be delivered to the Shogun for immediate execution. But the brave, enthusiastic young man tries to convince everyone they must embrace the technology he has brought back so they can prepare to face the enemies that will come – whether British or American. He argues that Japan must prepare itself to prevent being overrun like China was.

The Lord lost his wife at their daughter’s birth and now his lovely young daughter, Masuyo, is an ‘inappropriately’ outspoken, free spirit (doted on by her father). Masuyo finds Tōru’s journal of notes and sketches and is immediately enthralled. She champions Tōru so that her father delays the execution first to allow the young man to return to his home village to see his mother. They proceed to an adjacent Lord’s home and soon the two aristocrats are quietly planning how to enlist others in a rebellion to bring Japan into the steam era.

There are secrets to Tōru’s situation which are a puzzle to everyone, especially Masuyo. He is joined by his childhood friend who is a ‘common’ blacksmith but an uncommon machinist. Soon he is joined by another friend, another Lord’s chief samurai. These friends make an awesome team designing, engineering and building the needed weapons and tools, including railroads and steam dirigibles. The rebellion grows as they find allies in surprising places.

I really enjoyed the intrigue, plot twists, steampunk elements and the political allegory (a country struggling and stagnating under dictated traditions and leaders who lack vision). Ms. Sorenson provides good detail contrasting the living circumstances of the poor, who struggle each day with little hope of ever improving their situation, against the wealthy estates of the Lords and the revered positions of the samurai who have their opportunities as a matter of birthright. Masuyo is a strong, brave and inventive female character who contributes to the visionary team to the point of risking her life and her family. There is tenderness, sorrow, humor, bravery, and danger wrapped up in the story which moves along at a quick pace.

 I was reminded a bit of The Last Samurai, probably because I had watched the movie recently. I liked that the author gives a bit of afterword explaining the political atmosphere and history of the setting. The chapter header quotes are apt to the plot as the author creatively delivers this story of patriotism, honor and love. I recommend this to readers who like alternate history and adventure as well as readers who enjoy steampunk and a young romance that seems impossible but finds a way.

Review:
Commander Victor Shiloh is one of seven Frigates out in jump space. One of their own team has gone missing and the squadron leader is going in to investigate. It soon becomes apparent that a ruthless enemy is destroying ships at will with no contact or warning.

Shiloh begins to have visions of movements to take that become true after the fact. These appear to be instinctive, if not skilled, tactical moves. He can’t go to his superiors to tell them of his visions but it may be tricky to explain some of his actions without revealing the source. His superior wants to move Shiloh up in leadership but Shiloh declines the advancement and is sent off to an AI hanger as punishment. This turns out to have a positive result as Shiloh begins to develop a relationship with the AI team.

The AI units seem to be developing their own personalities – naming themselves and bantering with the humans they interact with. These AIs soon become fiercely involved in the battle preparations. Shiloh’s superior soon realizes that Shiloh is still making important decisions even from the fringes. They reassign him and he continues to face the enemy with limited success – but more success than anyone else.

The first book ends with a terrible cliffhanger. Fortunately, the audible book had the beginning of book two so I got pulled into that. I love the interaction with the AIs and I really enjoy the battle strategy and Shiloh’s personality. The story starts slowly and seems a bit dry until well into the story. Much of the beginning of the book was less than stellar in presentation and I might not have been interested in book two except for the pick up of action near the end of part 1 and the excerpt of part 2 being made available.

Audio Notes: Luke Daniels is the narrator and I have found him very effective in narrating The Iron Druid series. Sadly, this story is dry well into the midpoint so I think that the lackluster was more the story than the narration. I have not yet decided if I will continue in ebook or audio.

[I had to look up “synchronicity” and that wasn’t totally helpful. The Webster definition is: “the coincidental occurrence of events and especially psychic events (as similar thoughts in widely separated persons or a mental image of an unexpected event before it happens) that seem related but are not explained by conventional mechanisms of causality —used especially in the psychology of C. G. Jung.”]

This has been in my Audible Library since December 2015 and on my Kindle library since 2014. This qualifies for Audio Challenge and Mount TBR.

I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HUMANS ARE SO CRANKY ABOUT. Their enclosures are large, they ingest over a thousand calories per day, and they’re allowed to mate. Plus, they have me.
An Autonomous Servile Unit, housed in a mobile/bipedal chassis. I do my job well: keep the humans healthy and happy.
“Hey you.”
Heyoo. That’s my name, I suppose. It’s easier for the humans to remember than 413s98-itr8. I guess I’ve gotten used to it.

Review:
Heyoo is the name of a standard robotic farmer helper unit in 'the sanctuary'. The humans often tease him and he got his name because they always call him “Hey You”. He is in for repair of a circular difficulty when a rebellion takes place. It is hard for the computers to understand why humans would want to rebel against The CORE – after all the computer system provides housing, food, work and control all aspects of the human lives so that they can always be happy.

The humans placed something in Heyoo's chest and sent him away in a transporter that he didn’t previously know existed. Before they launch him out he sees the human look at him and say "he's the Wrong Unit!" Heyoo soon discovers that the package he is carrying is a human infant that he quickly names “Wah”! He also has half of a map. Heyoo has no idea how to take care of a messy, hungry infant. But Heyoo has determination to prove he can do the job! He spends the next thirteen years journeying with the map and helping Wah grow as the sole free human in the world. Eventually they uncover other hidden humans and gather a team to advance the release of the humans from 'the sanctuary'.

This dystopian story is truly delightful! It is told in first person by Heyoo. It charmingly moves with his changes as a farmer, a wanderer and even a pirate unit. Over the years of their journey Heyoo discovers the joys of human freedom and the inexpressible enthusiasm of a growing child exploring the wide world with his “Dad” as his best – well only for a long time – friend. Their interaction is adorable and evokes all sorts of human emotions: fear, joy, pain, sorrow, and love. And of course, the story reveals the irony of a perfect utopia world that removes the freedom of choice from the humans. The ending brought tears to my eyes! This is fun and definitely worth reading. I want to read more by Mr. Dircks.

This was a nice week back at home and in the office. I've been playing catch-up at work and enjoying the first couple Christmas parties. I hope to get good work done this coming week with minimal appointments.
We had our one night of cold - nothing compared to everyone up north. I did get stuck at work though as a tree fell across our street and took out power for three hours. Hubby called to tell me I couldn't get home.

Reading was fair, if a bit slow. I finished one audiobook and one print (which I loved). I am 70% into the next ebook. I posted two reviews and the usual memes.

I enjoyed visiting early in the week.

I have been enjoying listening to the companion commentary online when I am home.
I am reading The One Year Bible again along with my husband and others from our church.
