Poetry Book Review: Palm Lines by Jonathan Koven

I found this work of verse full of beautiful imagery and evoking of emotions.
Palm Lines
by Jonathan Koven

56354292. sy475

ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1734499281
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 53 pages
Publisher ‏ : ‎ Toho Publishing (December 18, 2020)
Genre: Emotion, Nature, Poetry
My Rating: 4.0 of 5.0.

These heartfelt poems speak to a transformative journey "to rediscover love as both a question and an answer." Seeking hope, honoring family, finding love, accepting time's passage, and understanding gratitude are all major themes explored in this dreamlike collection.

Review:

This is a thought provoking collection of verse, full of life and relationship topics. The poems are set out in three sections: Life line, Heart line and Head line.

I found the imagery descriptive, rich, and beautiful. Several pieces clearly evoke emotions such as sorrow, loneliness, hope and an awe of love. I liked the themes of family, friendship, and love that were shared in the free verse. The blurb description of “dreamlike” is fitting.

Let me preface the rest of my comments with the fact that I am more a fan of traditional poetry, and even freestyle, than of free verse. Some of the pieces made me stretch my mind as I might recognize imagery and sense the emotions, but I didn’t fully get the message right away. It might be best to read the full 50+/- pages as some of the poems in the second and third sections helped my understanding of the first section.

Also, keep in mind that I was reading for the purpose of reviewing rather than personal enjoyment/engagement. I was engaged, but it might take a slower, second reading, focusing in on each piece, to reach the full level of enjoyment that I do think these verses could supply. I recommend this to fans of free verse poetry and as a short collection to stretch those readers, like me, who favor more traditional poetry.

I say “thank you” to the author for providing this work for my review.

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost TEN years I have posted 91 groups of 16 books plus an additional 21 totaling 1,477 books available to find new homes! (As of November 6, 2020).

I am happy to say that so far about 1,374 books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A year or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Note rules here regarding international entries.
Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, TWRP, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors, your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to faraway places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

Repeating this helpful blog tip: You can right click on a link and you will be given the choice to open the link in a new window or tab so you do not navigate away from the screen you are on!! I use this all the time!

Audible Book Review: Penny Preston and the King’s Blade, Misaligned Book III, by Armen Pogharian

This author provides a very creative series!
Penny Preston and the King’s Blade
Misaligned, Book III
By: Armen Pogharian
Narrated by: Michelle Babb

Penny Preston and the King’s Blade By cover art

Length: 8 hrs and 33 mins
Release date: 08-24-21
Publisher: Sue Arroyo
Genre: Fantasy, Teen and YA, Time Travel
My Rating: 4.5 of 5.0 Overall; Story 4.5; Narration 4.5.

Publisher's Summary
Eight-grader Penny Preston thought she knew how to handle the Bodach, the spirits from the fifth dimension. But suddenly something is attacking the structure of the multiverse. Left unchecked, the attack will tear the fabric separating the dimensions and destroy the universe in a cataclysmic cosmic crunch. As the stress on the fabric grows, higher-dimensional energy escapes into Piper Falls, NY, reenergizing the Bodach. Emboldened, they use their regained powers to wreak havoc on the small town. The extra energy draws several new higher-dimensional entities to Piper Falls. One of them, a former Bodach commander, seeks to rally her followers and avenge her defeat at the hands of King Arthur more than 1,600 years ago by reestablishing her rule. The energy also attracts an especially destructive ethereal Celtic spirit, which has a special taste for ancient artifacts and exotic nuclear particles. The last of the new arrivals is a mysterious and conflicted shape-shifter a spy known as Newiddyn.
The interactions of the newcomers and their empowered brethren with the town's residents results in chaos and brings paranormal researcher Darin Kolchak back to town. Teamed with the deputy sheriff, their high technology investigation leads them to the local lab conducting state of the art nuclear fusion experiments. The same lab where Penny's parents work. Penny and her friends must again dodge detection, as they sort out the capabilities and intentions of these powerful entities. One bad choice or wrong step risks unleashing the apocalypse of the Darkest Day.

Review:
Penny is a ‘misaligned’ girl with the ability to see and move in different dimensions. Since discovering her paranormal skills as a Dawnus, Penny has been busy fighting nasty Bodachs (monsters from the fifth dimension). She is guided by her science teacher, Mr. Myrdin, and his human-speaking Raven, Mr. Poe. Penny also gets help from her protector, Cate Sith, ‘cat’, Simon, and her classmate, Duncan. All of the friends are concerned as Mr. Poe explains that something is attacking the structure of the multiverse and could result in tearing the fabric that separates the dimensions and ultimately destroy the universe.

The leaking energy is drawing more supernatural spirits to the small town of Piper Falls. Some are annoying Bodach who are busy wreaking havoc on the town. Of greater worry are the high level entities that see the thinning fabric as a way to get back to the dimensions from which they have been banished. One of these is a shapeshifter (a Newiddyn, known to Simon as ‘the bird that isn’t a bird’) named Menw. Menw once spied for the Bodach against King Arthur until he changed sides. But there is another former Bodach commander who lost to Arthur and now seeks revenge if she can get it.

All of the strange activity in town causes amateur spirit hunter, deputy sheriff, Fred, to call in paranormal researcher Darin Kolchak with his van rigged with paranormal tools. They are trying to locate the causes of paranormal activity at the work site of Penny’s parents, who do not know about her special abilities.

I really enjoy all of the Celtic folklore elements, many of which are shared by Duncan’s Welsh grandmother who quickly recognizes Menw’s nature. The author also shares some thoughts on Ying and Yang while Penny and Duncan research their most recently assigned class project. Simon, “I am Cait Sith”, plays a strong character in this third installment which leads to a fun concluding line by Penny.

I find this series full of creativity, humor, and a good mix of legendary history with well-paced action. This is easy to listen to and good for the middle grade audience. I found it entertaining too and recommend it for family listening.

Audio Notes: Michelle Babb continues to do a lovely job with the narration. She portrays the children and adult voices with distinct and fitting accents and energy. The narration enhanced my enjoyment of the book and I appreciate having this on audio.

Sunday Post #318 Chairs, Compliance, and Storms

I am linking with Sunday Post at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? now at The Book Date (at Wordpress)
What Are You Reading? is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I had a busy week of appointments before being out of office Friday to travel to GFWC Florida Fall Convention.

While I am waiting for some fun pictures from the convention I will share my September nail art. The usual nail artist wasn't there so it isn't quite as distinct as it might have been.
I am calling them my "Van Gogh" Sunflower nails due to the slight blurry look.
(Inspired by Sunflower pictures shared on Facebook by Serena @ Savvy Verse & Wit. Thanks Serena!)

Our Florida weather for the weekend was sunny and nice. Warm but not too hot.
I was glad to share a room with a Panama City member who likes warmer room temperatures like me. :-).

I was busy with work and prep to be out of office so I only enjoyed and finished one audiobook.  I posted three reviews and my usual memes.

I visited only 16 blogs last week.
Shout Out this week to INTROVERTED READER. Jen has been a blogger since 2009. She reads and shares on a wide variety.

Audible offerings for free children's titles ended June 30.
Audiobooks.com is still sharing some free listens for children.

These were last week's posts:

Best in Snow: An Andy Carpenter Mystery

Best in Snow
(Andy Carpenter #24)
by David Rosenfelt
Narrated by Grover Gardner
6 hours and 52 minutes
I enjoy this author and series.
Source: 9/9/2021 from NetGalley.

Publisher's Summary
In this Christmas mystery, Best in Snow, lawyer Andy Carpenter and his golden retriever, Tara, are on the beat after a body turns up in the snow and a journalist is nowhere to be found.
Christmas has come early to the town of Paterson, New Jersey, in the form of a snowstorm that left over two feet of snow on the ground. Lawyer Andy Carpenter likes snow - to a point - but he misses the walks he takes his dogs on every day.
When the snow starts to melt, and a body is discovered, Andy ends up in the office of the local newspaper editor. The murder victim is that of crooked businessman Thomas Lansing, who had an infamous relationship with the newspaper. Last year a young reporter published an expose, and Lansing had him fired for libel. Now, the young reporter - and prime suspect - isn’t answering his phone...and everyone is worried.
Andy agrees to take the case, though it’s not looking good this holiday season. The snow is piling up - along with the evidence - in the next Christmas mystery in this best-selling series from David Rosenfelt.

The Duke and the Spoiled Wallflower
by Tessa Brookman
I will be reading this one next.
Source: Received from author team for review.

Because she is nothing short of his passion incarnated...
Lady Lydia Bennet is escaping scandal. After moving to London, she makes herself a promise: she will stay away from men and never wed. But when she finds out she has to marry Asher, the mysterious returning Duke, she's forced to confront her dark past.
Asher Graydent, the Duke of Whitehaven, has dedicated his life to avenging his parents’ deaths. Upon returning from the Far East, he finds himself debt-ridden and the only way out is by forming ties with the Bennet family; by marrying their innocent, bluestocking daughter, Lydia.
As the bells of marriage ring closer, Lydia soon accepts she cannot escape her fate. Instead, she uses the Duke to exact revenge on the one responsible for her scarred past.
But as Asher’s lips touch hers, it’s suddenly proven impossible to resist him. But she must...or must she?

September 26, 2021 - I am on track. I love seeing new things each time I read the Bible. I am glad to still be current with morning reading. I am reading/listening to the NLT Tyndale version of the Bible on You Version App so Hubby and I are reading the same passages each day.
I finished a 3 day devotional titled "Living An Authentic Christian Life".
A group from church are starting a new five day study: The Great Surrender.

I completed only one book to review this week.
My NetGalley shelf is now at 1 new children's title and 3 old ebooks titles.
I have two author titles remaining in queue when I finish the two under current reading. I'm still working on reading these.
(Plus a few that I received from facebook links and newsletter sign-ups, not specific review requests.)
Still many titles through InstaFreebie and many new author requests I haven't replied to.

Welcome to Mailbox Monday.

Sunday Words of Encouragement September 26, 2021

I am out of town for the weekend, returning home on a five hour drive while Sunday church takes place. In case I don't get a chance to add notes from Pastor's message, I have chosen a song that I think will go with his current series "Walking with Jesus."
Everything Comes Alive!
Verses for Today:
Ephesians 2:1-5
Made Alive in Christ
1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

Lord, I give thanks that You have freed me from my sins and that everything comes alive in You!
