Book Review: The Clockwork Dynasty by Daniel H. Wilson

This is an engaging fantasy with strong history and clockwork elements.
The Clockwork Dynasty
by Daniel H. Wilson
File Size: 3835 KB
Print Length: 322 pages
Publisher: Doubleday (August 1, 2017)
ASIN: B01LXFO711
Genre: Clockwork, Fantasy, Sci Fi
My Rating: 4.0 of 5.0

An ingenious new thriller that weaves a path through history, following a race of human-like machines that have been hiding among us for untold centuries, written by the New York Times bestselling author of Robopocalypse.
Present day: When a uncovers a terrible secret concealed in the workings of a three-hundred-year-old mechanical doll, she is thrown into a hidden world that lurks just under the surface of our own. With her career and her life at stake, June Stefanov will ally with a remarkable traveler who young anthropologist specializing in ancient technology exposes her to a reality she never imagined, as they embark on an around-the-world adventure and discover breathtaking secrets of the past…
Russia, 1725: In the depths of the Kremlin, the tsar’s loyal mechanician brings to life two astonishingly humanlike mechanical beings. Peter and Elena are a brother and sister fallen out of time, possessed with uncanny power, and destined to serve great empires. Struggling to blend into pre-Victorian society, they are pulled into a legendary war that has raged for centuries.
The Clockwork Dynasty seamlessly interweaves past and present, exploring a race of beings designed to live by ironclad principles, yet constantly searching for meaning. As June plunges deeper into their world, her choices will ultimately determine their survival or extermination. Richly-imagined and heart-pounding, Daniel H. Wilson’s novel expertly draws on his robotics and science background, combining exquisitely drawn characters with visionary technology—and riveting action.

Review:
June learned to love old trinkets from her grandfather. He had a special relic that she inherited upon his death. Now June is an anthropologist specializing in ancient technology and making old clockwork pieces work. Her services have been funded by a special company but each time she reaches a new destination it appears that someone has been one step ahead, taking the relics and sometimes destroying the evidence.

The most recent stop at an ancient monastery reveals a beautiful clockwork doll. It is missing its innards but June is able to jerry rig power to get it operating long enough to write a secret message before the building begins to collapse around them. Suddenly her guide announces that her funding has been withdrawn and her job is over.

Soon the guide and June are facing attack by a dark man with super human strength. June tries to escape but it doesn’t look good. Then another super human man steps in between. June isn’t sure if he is trying to save her or also trying to take her family relic.

The current day events alternate with events from history beginning in 1709 and moving forward. These chapters introduce and follow a clockwork man, Peter, and his child-like beautiful ‘sister, Elena.’ Peter and Elena were created for a specific purpose and centered with an internal “word” that shapes their actions. Peter seeks Justice in all things while Elena pursues logic. Although they have a close relationship it is strained by their different goals.

I really enjoyed the automated characters, particularly Peter who shares the story lead with June. The history detail that is shared is fascinating. Parts of the story were a tad slow but these are offset by good action and intrigue. There is a dark tone and images that brought thoughts of the Terminator.

The plotline runs with a metaphysical twist as it moves to a tense and explosive climax. I thought the writing was crisp and the story creative. I recommend this to readers who enjoy clockwork or cyborg stories with great historic detailing.

I received this from NetGalley and it adds to my NetGalley Challenge.

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost seven years I have posted 68 groups of 16 (1,088) books to find new homes! (as of November 4, 2016).

I am happy to say that so far about 1,102!+ books have found new homes! YAY. I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Note rules here regarding international entries.
Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

Repeating this helpful blog tip: You can right click on a link and you will be given the choice to open the link in a new window or tab so you do not navigate away from the screen you are on!! I use this all the time!

Audible Book Review: Skinwalker: Jane Yellowrock, Book 1 by Faith Hunter

I really enjoyed this shapeshifter story.
Skinwalker: Jane Yellowrock, Book 1
By Faith Hunter
Narrated By Khristine Hvam
Length: 14 hrs and 34 mins
Series: Jane Yellowrock, Book 1
Unabridged Audiobook
Release Date:04-13-10
Publisher: Audible Studios

My Rating: 4.25 of 5.0

Publisher's Summary

©2009 Faith Hunter (P)2010 Audible, Inc.

Review:
Jane Yellowrock is a unique creature- skinwalker of Cherokee descent. She can transform into other creatures but her primary figure is the “beast” that shares her soul. Jane has developed a reputation for her successful career in hunting vampires. In this modern-day vampire community the “vamps”, as Jane somewhat disdainfully calls them, are out of the closet. They are bound by certain rules regarding blood slaves and protecting innocents from rogue killers. The vampire hierarchy have hired Jane to track and eliminate a rogue vampire that is leaving brutalized bodies in his wake.

Jane has found the rogue but discovers that the killer has more in common with her than a vampire gone bad. She can smell death on him…not just the death of victims but the rogue’s own decay.

Jane has to disable spy cameras and watch her back as there are others following her as she tracks and gathers clues. Several men seem to be interested in Jane physically and one of the major vampire family heads is pushing hard to learn her secrets.

The rogue causes damage close to Jane’s temporary home and he appears to be accelerating out of control. Jane is racing to meet the deadline and get the bounty bonus. But when the dust has settled, Jane has made a major a new enemy who is set on eliminating her, no matter who or what she is.

The story gives a bit of Jane’s childhood background so the reader gets to know how she has developed her current K-A, self reliant attitude. The beast senses enhance Jane's own keen senses and skills just as her “beast” weapons add to Jane’s full pack of human weapons. There is plenty of action and I liked the POV switch offs between Jane and her “beast.” Jane also has some witch friends, a mother and a precocious child, who will make good additions as support characters. I will be glad to pick up more in this series for future entertainment.

Audio Notes: Khristine Hvam does a fine job with the narration. She pulls in the southern accents and different voices for the elite vampires, the cops and the secondary support. I also enjoyed the beast narration. I will continue to listen to this series.

I picked this from my Audible TBR. It qualifies for Mount TBR, Audiobook Challenge and for "S" in Alphabet Challenge.

Creatures of legend live among us. Grown-ups don't always make the best decisions. And sometimes choosing to trust is a tough, even dangerous decision.
After his mom disappears, Jason Lex and his family move to a small town where he has no friends, no fun, no life. Things get worse when he's chased by weird flying creatures that only he can see. Jason thinks he's losing it.
But when he discovers new information about his family, he's stunned to learn that creatures like Skyfish, Kappa, and the Mongolian Death Worm aren't just stories on the Internet - they're real, and they live unseen alongside the human race. Many of these creatures naturally emit energy capable of incinerating humans. An invisible shield keeps these creatures hidden and protects the human race from their threatening force. But someone - or something - is trying to destroy it.
Unsure who he can trust, Jason is drawn into the fight to save the people closest to him, and he finds help in surprising places. Confronted with loss, uncertainty, and a devastating betrayal, he must make a gut-wrenching decision: who lives and who dies.

This cover drew me in! So my first Holiday read is a Cozy Mystery. :-)
I received this through NetGalley. It releases on October 10.

When the murder weapon is revealed as one of the wooden stakes used to identify trees on the farm, Sheriff Evan Grey turns to Holly’s father, Bud, and the Reindeer Games staff. And it doesn’t help that Bud and the reindeer keeper were each seen arguing with Margaret just before her death. But Holly knows her father, and is determined to exonerate him.The jingle bells are ringing, the clock is ticking, and if Holly doesn't watch out, she'll end up on Santa's naughty list in Twelve Slays of Christmas, Jacqueline Frost’s jolly series debut.

September 10, 2017 - I am back reading on track in the One Year Bible, still with one week to catch up. I am working on getting back on track. I have been reading along with my husband and others from our church. I hope to take more time this year, staying on the day and listening to the companion commentary online.

I completed four books and posted three reviews. That puts me at four current reviews to be up to date.
I am now nine titles behind linking my reviews to Goodreads, Amazon and Audible.:-(

I am down to 3 NetGalley titles (so I may start requesting again) and still 2 author titles in my queue, the others are instafreebies that I do want to get to but not the same commitment.

We're working on two fiction books soon to add to eTreasure's NetGalley page.

Sunday Words of Encouragement September 24, 2017

We had a good Sunday School lesson on complacency. Then entered praise and worship before the sermon.

Pastor continued the series on Tension, first reminding us that tension can lead to negative outcomes, but that where there is tension, there is power. This week’s message is on Tension in Marriage. Probably everyone has experienced this whether married or a child of a marriage. We bring the best of us to marriage and hope for best. A marriage relationship is filled with tension because two people come together to become as one. Even with the best of plans, which doesn’t always exist, the marriage situation is a recipe for tension.

Pastor noted that often a lot of planning goes into the wedding, but how much goes into the life after the wedding? Pastor shared how there were some mishaps at his wedding and reception but the problems at the wedding didn't set the tone for marriage.

The natural instinct for individuals is to pull away. Satan will do everything he can to destroy the relationship within a marriage. Matthew 19:7-14.

Relieving tension is different from avoiding tension. People need to deal with the tension which will allow the relationship to grow stronger.

Point: Tension is a warning sign AND an opportunity to bring your marriage under God's design.

The Bible shares God’s design for marriage. First, two become one (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:6) but it takes more work than just love. God's blueprint for marriage is set out in Ephesians 5. After providing an outline Paul admonishes people to “be careful how you live, not as fools but as the wise. Ephesians 5:15. A primary, necessary element is to “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." Ephesians 5:21. This attitude of submission and respect is expanded in verses 22-33.

It helps to recognize stressors in marriage. Stressors are external events that cause impact. This impact is viewed as negative or positive. Which indicates that we have choices in how we react.
Chronic issues will clearly cause problems. If there is a chronic issue it will have to be set off by other areas: spiritual, physical or psychological.

Some well-known stressors are: parenting, job stress, exhaustion, noncommunication, disagreement, hurt feelings, poor health, in-laws, financial issues, lack of respect, lack of appreciation.

Many stressors are invited in. Instead of avoiding them and allowing them to fester and create a wedge that deteriorates the relationship, they must be dealt with.

How do you eliminate stressors?
1. Recognize the stressor and consider options, make choices. For example, it is not fair for one spouse to feel like he or she only gets leftover time. The situation needs to be discussed and it may take a change of job even if it means less income and/or change of lifestyle. We can have victory in Christ (1 John 5:4) and more than conquerors (Romans 8:37).

2. When the stressor can't be eliminated, we can change our reactions to the stress. God will give you way out. 1 Corinthians 10:13.

Satan wants to destroy marriage; God wants to save the relationship. When tension leads to a decision point, what will you do? It may be time to redefine your identity in Christ. Your own relationship with Christ defines how you deal in marriage. We can plan for marriage by finding our place in Christ first. (As my husband always says: Christ has to be the center of the home for the marriage to be successful in His will.)

I didn’t think I’d find a song about marriage but I found this. Jesus and You.
Verses for Today:
Ephesians 5:15-21 NIV
15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Thank you Lord for giving me a wonderful husband who agreed that You would be the heart and center of our love and home!
