Happy Friday!
I sure will be glad when everyone is well again around here! Hubby and I have struggled through our colds; getting to bed early trying to knock it out. (No reviews done though.)
The girls in the office have missed three days between them and sick children. :-(
On the heart side Hubby is still doing better. They sent a nurse to the house to make him wear the LifeVest. Apparently they need the monitoring for three months to decide if he needs a pacemaker. He is frustrated but beginning to acquiesce.
Our weather has been pretty warm except for Thursday's temperature drop to high 30s. We've had some heavy rain storms several afternoons. I had to stop twice to pull branches off our driveway.
I sure hope everyone is staying safe in these strange weather conditions.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost seven years I have posted 68 groups of 16 (1,088) books to find new homes! (as of November 4, 2016).

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. Some readers, and a few of my relatives, think that I’ve got a twisted mind to have come up with some of my murder plots. Actually, in my own defense, I don’t always come up with the murder. Sometimes, I simply twist it around a bit.

Truth be told, often the germ of my ideas are—
Ripped from the Headlines!

Like all writers, I love stories. I like telling them, I also like hearing them. I have found that readers love to tell mystery writers stories about … you guessed it—murder. Often, it is a true story in which the story-teller will inject their own view of the facts.

Well, writers do the same thing. We just go further and actually write it down. Then we continue to twist and turn and stir and drain the facts until we come up with a book that more often than not, has no resemblance to what we had when we started out.

It’s a fact. Truth is stranger than fiction. Think about what you see in today’s headlines. Real people, especially those who are twisted, are much more imaginative than most writers. Good writers ask the right questions (usually, What if…) to make a great mystery out of it.

Such was the case for my latest Thorny Rose mystery, A Fine Year for Murder. A combination of headlines had captured my attention. From the discovery of a murder weapon, a hammer, warming up the cold case of a family murdered (Keddie Murders) to the sleepwalking defense—a defendant claiming he was innocent because he committed murder while sleepwalking.

The sleepwalking idea bloomed from a discussion at my table during a bridal shower. After a few games and sweets, the conversation turned to accidents in the bedroom. One young lady confessed that she had a tendency to be quite athletic after falling asleep. This young woman didn’t have nightmares, she just simply kicked and punched her husband. Unfortunately, she was unaware of how physical she was until after she had given him a black-eye on their honeymoon.

What if, I asked, Jessica Faraday gave Murphy a black eye on their honeymoon … as a result of nightmares … because she had witnessed a murder and had tucked the memory deep into her subconscious?

It is entirely possible. There have been numerous cases of victims of violence or witnesses to traumatic incidents repressing the memories only to have them re-emerge years, even decades later.
As these various ideas swirled around in my head, the writer in me asked What if…
there had been a tragically brutal murder of a family—a case that has long gone cold. And what if, somehow, someway, Jessica Faraday had been a witness to this murder but has buried that memory deep into her mind—only to surface in her sleep—causing her to strike out at Murphy in her terror.

The cause for her nightmares remains a mystery until investigative journalist Dallas Walker tells the couple about her latest case, known as the Pine Bridge Massacre. Then, they realize Jessica may have witnessed the murder of a family living near a winery owned by distant relatives she was visiting.

Determined to uncover the truth and find justice for the murder victims, Jessica and Murphy return to the scene of the crime with Dallas Walker, a spunky bull-headed Texan. Can this family reunion bring closure for a community touched by tragedy or will this prickly get-together bring an end to the Thorny Rose couple?

As a murder mystery writer, I don’t make up the news, I only give it a special twist from the imagination.

I am thankful for another fairly quiet week. My second staff member was out sick with pneumonia. My daughter was still recovering from her wisdom teeth so it was difficult for her, and then her middle child ended up in the ER with high fever which was diagnosed as strep throat. Still, I completed my reporting project and got some legal work done.
Hubby and I both ended up on the weekend with sneezes and running noses. Bleh!
Our 40 degree weather has warmed up to 60s.

Reading was good but not so full. I only finished two books: one ebook and one audible. I posted three reviews on the blog and posted all of my usual memes.

I got to visit 25+ blogs again this past week.

February 5, 2017 - I am up to date with the One Year Bible; reading along with my husband and others from our church. I hope to take more time this year, staying on the day and listening to the companion commentary online.

I completed two new books and posted three reviews. That gets me four for this week including one planned for 2/11.

Sunday Words of Encouragement February 5, 2017

We had an interesting Sunday School with our substitute sharing a video interview from a Reverend and his family describing their experiences visiting heaven. Pastor continued his series in James, titles “When Faith and Life Collide”.

Recapping he reminded us that we all face temptation and we are God's prized possession. God has supplied us with all we need to face and overcome the battle. Then Pastor asked how many of us were good listeners. Too often people listen without absorbing what is being said. They are emotionally poised to respond, focused on making their own points. As example: Consider how many sermons have you heard over the past 10 years? Then consider if your life has changed based on those sermons.

Often, we hear things, but don't listen; we are taught but don't learn. There is a disconnect between the lesson and responsive action.

Pastor read James 19-27, stressing: do what the word says and God will bless you.
Go beyond listening to do what it says. Your response to the word has the power to save your souls. (James 21.) What is the most important information you need at this moment? At some point you have to surrender.

Sermon Point: Real change requires real action.
Change brought through obedience should be permanent, not temporary. James says it is absurd to look in a mirror, then walk away and forget what you look like. How can you experience what God has for you and not stay there?

What are you doing daily? When was your last significant change? Have you made a full connection? What has to change today? Always the step starts with repentance and changing our actions.

Think how your life could be different? Is it time for a life change? Do you need an attitude change? What could God do through us if we responded with obedience? Access where you could be and what you will do with the next days, weeks, months and years of your life.

This song seemed to fit for today.

21 So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.
22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.

Lord, again I pray, help me listen and focus on Your Will for my life; that I might do as You direct.

I rarely read out loud except when I read to the grand kids. Also I sometimes like to read poetry out loud to get a better feel for it. I do let the Kindle read out loud to me -- as long as hubby isn't nearby as he doesn't like hearing the reading. The Kindle reading is not narrative performance like audio books but I still like it for allowing me to do chores while listening.

Kalico Jack is a little different from the other Jack Rabbits so much so that he is he is constantly ridiculed. As he gets old enough, Kalico Jack decides to embark on a journey to find where he fits in. This adventure takes him across the western part of the United States where he makes many friends and eventually figures out what his special purpose is.

Mike Nahorniak was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He is a self-taught artist who has enjoyed the adventure of living in various locations across the Western half of the United States. Some of his most famous paintings include, "Time," "Where the Antelope Play," and "Montana Moose."
He is retired from the Air Force where he served for 27 years. Mike is married with three children.

Review:

Kalico Jack is a jack rabbit with a difference – his fur is multicolored with orange and black stripes and splotches on white. Add to that two different eye colors and Kalico Jack was repeatedly made fun of by other rabbits. When he gets old enough, Kalico Jack decides to take travel west from his home in Chicago hoping to find a place where he fits in.

The story follows Kalico Jack as he passes through St. Louis and journeys west all the way to the coast Along the way he makes friends with bullfrogs, cows, wolves, various desert creatures, Big Foot and even a Martian (near Area 51 apparently). He checks out several national parks and, as he nears Devil’s Tower, he makes a surprising discovery. He decides he must return to the city to use his newly found skills to help others. That isn't easy and he faces a fearsome enemy. He knows he still has lots to learn, but now he feels he has a purpose.

The story is cute and imaginative, if a bit wacky. The images are beautiful and fun and I am sure that a print version would be a delight for children. There is obviously a message regarding being different and finding a way to accept one’s differences and make them an asset. I enjoyed the story and think it would be a fun read with a young person who likes adventure.

I received this title through NetGalley. This qualifies for 2017 TBR Challenge, NetGalley Challenge and “K” on Alphabet Challenge.

X Minus One was a half-hour science fiction radio series broadcast from April 24, 1955 to January 9, 1958, in various timeslots on NBC. Initially a revival of NBC's Dimension X (1950-51), X Minus One is widely considered among the finest science fiction dramas ever produced for radio. The first 15 episodes were new versions of Dimension X episodes, but the remainder were adaptations by NBC staff writers, including Ernest Kinoy and George Lefferts, of newly published science fiction stories by leading writers in the field, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Robert A. Heinlein, Frederik Pohl, and Theodore Sturgeon, along with some original scripts by Kinoy and Lefferts.
Episodes of the show include adaptations of Robert Sheckley's "Skulking Permit", Bradbury's "Mars Is Heaven", Heinlein's "Universe" and "The Green Hills of Earth", Pohl's "The Tunnel Under the World", J. Review:
This audio book consists of stories originally broadcast on radio in 1955. The dramas are very engaging and I enjoyed the voice production and background sounds. Each story runs about 25 minutes so they are great for little snippets although the introduction and ending credits for each one become a little annoying. I could just picture an older generation sitting in front of the radio listening.

My favorite was Heinlein's “The Green Hills of Earth” which tells the tale of a space mechanic who protects the ship when automation fails. He becomes a beloved space “sailor” traveling along the freight lines and writing songs to sing on his guitar. A very special song is about the green hill of his home planet.

Another one that I really liked was George Lefferts' "The Parade". A wealthy man asks a slick public relations man in New York to prepare a plan to announce “the Martians are Coming.” The PR man is thrilled to have the high paying job and thinks the ad plan is for a new spectacular movie. The campaign will culminate in a gala parade to introduce “the Martians” to the city.

The stories are classic sci fi with the twist of irony I have come to expect in science fiction. There is a bit of humor and a strong dose of creepy horror. I do think it is fun that some of the stories treat the 1970s or '90s as a future world. I recommend this to those who enjoy vintage sci fi and like the idea of the broadcast format.

Audio Notes: If you have ever listened to an old radio broadcast you know how they are presented with good actor voices and background stories, including music building to enhance the mystery and danger.

This is from my Audible library, picked up in 2016 and planned for Vintage Sci Fi. It qualifies for my 2017 TBR and Audio challenges and “X” in Alphabet Challenge.

The Most Difficult Thing On My Road to Publication

There are many difficult things that come with the long wait until publication, but I suppose the uncertainty comes when you start to face rejections. You always expect some rejections (because it’s just part of the process). But when the start to come in droves, it makes you step back and wonder if what you’ve created is worthy of being in print.

Yet I have to be honest: The road to publishing The Remnant was very easy compared to other works I’ve done. I really only sent this novel out to a few publishers, and my contract with Dancing Lemur Press came very quickly. I was stunned, but when I looked closer at the publisher, what their mission was, what kind of books they published, I realized why it happened quickly. I think we were a good fit. It was like being on a blind date and walking into a room to meet that person and realizing, from the get-go, that there was chemistry. That was what it felt like.

Ironically, I wrote The Remnant while trying to publish another work of mine entitled Storm Taken. Publishing that novel has been a long, arduous journey, and if there’s anything I’ve learned it’s this: Every writer should be writing something new while trying to publish something old. If I would have focused all of my energy on publishing Storm Taken, The Remnant wouldn’t exist. At the time it was a side-project—just something to fill the time—but it has evolved into much, much more. I’ve already finished writing the first draft of the sequel and am excited about writing the third book in the trilogy.

But back to the question at hand: The hardest part of the publishing process, for me, is the angst that comes with handing over your manuscript to a publisher and wondering if it’s good enough. And then dealing with the rejections and wondering if you’ve completely deluded yourself into believing that what you have is publishable.

But maybe, in the end, it wouldn’t matter. I’ll be the first to admit that even if The Remnant never would have seen the light of day, I would have still written it. And even if nobody wants to publish the second or third book, I’ll still write and edit them.

Because the joy is in the process, right? The best part about writing—in my opinion—is sitting in front of the computer, typing away, and losing yourself in your idea. If that’s all that ever happened with The Remnant or any other novel I’ve written, at least I have that.

And that’s a lot.
