Sharing Beyond Books #405 Comment Giveaway October 3, 2020

Hello again and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB
Thanks to everyone who commented last week.
Q#404: How do you Unhaul? There were mixed answers so the totals exceed the number of people who commented: four donate, four gift, three hold on to their books, two swap, two use Little Free Library, two sell, and Linda primarily deletes because she reads ebooks.

The Winner from SBB #404 comments is #12 DENISE who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the Updated (**Finally!) ARC/Review titles or (recently updated) Love and Christmas titles - all linked near the end of the post. -- [11/16/19 I plan to add some review books this week and maybe some new Christmas and Love titles as soon as I locate the box I put them in. 10/3/20 I have set aside some books for SBB and will take a picture and add them to the list in the next week or so.

**NOTE: I did post an Updated ARC and Other books for Giveaways. I have to go back and list the titles -- someday.
Please let me know your choice by completing the WINNER FORM.

WEEK #405
(One Question.)
Becky asks: How do you go about deciding what to read next? or do you just go with what ever is next in you TBR pile??
We have answered somewhat similar questions regarding handling of our TBR but not this specific question. I have so many books that I try to have a little bit of a plan and that is why I have a list and keep track. The Alphabet Challenge gets me looking for books to match the alphabet. I like to rotate geners: sci fi, mystery, romance, and non-fiction. I read a couple of NetGalley titles each month and try to meet my TBR goal by reading enough books each month from prior years. I read seasonally (holidays like Christmas, New Years, Valentines, summer and ghostly and horror for October). Then I also try to include both continuing and new series.
So I pick up my next read based on all that input rather than just looking through and saying "Oh, that one looks good." :-)

Who knew they actually have flowcharts to help pick your next read!?

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month, I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a 1/2 book choice or $2.50 towards GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! The supply of questions is dwindling so share some if you think of any -- even if they are duplicates I'll weed through or try to modify them.

Sharing Beyond Books #404 Comment Giveaway September 19, 2020

Hello again and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB
Thanks to everyone who commented last week.
How has Covid impacted our reading? Four are reading less, four are reading more; three saw no change; two read more at first but then got back to normal; one read more at first and later less; and one is reading the same amount but more re-reading.

The Winner from SBB #403 comments is #8 MARY P who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the Updated (**Finally!) ARC/Review titles or (recently updated) Love and Christmas titles - all linked near the end of the post. -- [11/16/19 I plan to add some review books this week and maybe some new Christmas and Love titles as soon as I locate the box I put them in. 10/5/19 I have pulled some new books and will be adding them to the list in the next week or so.

WEEK #404
(One Question.)
Natalija asks: Do you unhaul books? What do you do with your unhauled books??
I had to look up what it means to "unhaul" books. I gather it means to get rid of your 'excess' books. If that is right, I unhaul regularly by giving books away on the Friday Pick and this giveaway. (Which reminds me I need to get more books up for SBB). I also send a box or two to the library every now and then. I think they recently put up a Little Free Library in town and I need to drop off some books there too!

Hello again and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB
Thanks to everyone who commented last week.

WEEK #403
(One Question.)

Miki asks: How did the covid 19 influence your reading habit? Did you read more or less??
I did experience a sense of disorientation in the second or third month (in May maybe). I continued to work and didn't gain any extra free time so I don't think it has impacted my reading.

WEEK #402
(One Question.)

Nikki asks: Are you a list-maker? Do you use post-its/paper/handphone??
[Sorry - I think I got carried away on this answer!!]

I do like checklists and excel spreadsheets, particularly for work. I have created checklists to help all of us cover all tasks needed for each real estate closing. I have created checklists to help my assistant when handling law files.

Every six months or so I do an updated excel "To Do Task List" for my open law cases and probates. I probably should do a daily or at least weekly list - but I don't. I no longer use post-it notes for file communication. Instead, I start with a blank page on the outside of the file and we date notes to keep track of actions needed and done.

On a not so 'business' front I keep several list of books - one per year 2015 to 2020 for audios purchased plus one for audios under 10 hours; a current year list for NetGalley and for Alphabet; an current year excel list for monthly reading; and a current tracking list of monthly postings.

I also keep a very detailed excel spreadsheet for stock transactions. (I think I will need this for taxes.) This is helping me see which trades work better and which have larger losses. I am still learning and this has been helpful

For home we have created lists for travel needs: camper, cruise or just car travel. There is also a list for our daughter on how to handle utilities if she is staying in our home or borrowing the RV.

I don't generally keep a list of goals although I know that is highly recommended. It has just never been something I did.

I do use post-it notes to remind me of things to take home or to pick up at the store! I rarely use a phone list except for my prayer lists.

My assistant has strips of notes taped to her desk and occasionally uses post-it notes around her computer. We know one administrator whose computer is covered with post-it notes!

WEEK #401
(One Question.)

ASHFA asks: What are some of your favourite books that made you very emotional??
This is a hard question for me since I think I avoid emotional books. :-) I read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy which may have emotional moments but that isn't the primary element. Looking at my "tags" the only ones with 'emotion' references are children's books.

I looked through my book reading lists while trying to think of a book to fit. One that was more recent is Christmas Eve, 1914. An older one is The Killer Angels. And a series that came to mind that evoked emotions for me is The Study Series by Maria V Snyder.
Then I remembered one that I will let be a favorite for this answer: Unwritten: A Novel by Charles Martin.
I'm very curious to see your answers!

WEEK #400
(One Question.)

FREDAMANS asks: What is your favorite bookish accessory??
This question seemed familiar but it didn't show up in my spreadsheet. I have to say my favorite accessory is earbuds for my phone (or occassionally my mp3 player) where I listen to audiobooks and for my kindle (generation 2) which reads to me. I rarely read a print book anymore. I did find some interesting items while looking for images so I will be curious to see what your picks are.

Sharing Beyond Books #398 Comment Giveaway June 27, 2020

Hello again and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB.
Thanks to everyone who commented last week. I hope all are getting to enjoy some summer (or winter) sun.

Four of us remember reading Nancy Drew books, 3 named the Hardy Boys and 2 named Enid Blyton. One mention each went to Trixie Brendon, Harry Potter, Dark Hunters (Kenyon), la Comtesse de Segur, Mallory Towers, Dick and Jane, and the Little House series. Fredamans mentioned the Little Golden Books which reminded me that I read those too and shared them with my children.

WEEK #398
(One Question.)

This is an older question from Alina: What book/author did you think you'll never like, but people pressured you to try and then you loved it/him/her??
I had a hard time thinking if I had an answer for this question. (I can name some titles/authors I have tried but didn't like and I can name popular authors I haven't tried and probably never will. We'll save those for another SBB.) After review of my Reading Lists and Wrap Ups I would say that these are authors/series I wasn't sure if I would like but I ended up loving:
Taylor Anderson, The Destroyermen Series
Dennis E. Taylor, Bobiverse Series
Gary Paulson, The Quilt
Larry Correria, Monster Hunter Series

And then there is the genre I didn't know I would like but found I love it: Military Sci Fi.

Sharing Beyond Books #396 Comment Giveaway May 30, 2020

Hello again and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB.
Thanks to everyone who commented last week. I hope everyone is staying safe not only with COVID19 but also with the rioting in the US cities. The murder of George Floyd is horrible and very wrong. But the protests have gone well beyond seeking justice.

Eleven of us have different apps we like to use. Several mentioned social media apps particularly: Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Snapchat. Then there are several book apps: Audible, Goodreads, Libby/Overdrive, and Library apps. Also, a few practical use apps: Google Maps, Viber, fast food.

WEEK #396
(One Question.)

Bookworm asks: What book has left a profound impact on you in some way??
I think the books that leave a profound impact on me tend to be Christian and/or prophetic like Jonathan Cahn's books, The End of America?. These books keep me mindful to pray and trust in my God who controls the universe.
Another book that I remember from years back is The Killer Angels about the Civil War. I find it so hard to think of that time of disunion. It makes me concerned about the extreme divisions we have in our country.

WEEK #395
(One Question.)

Elizabeth asks: What is your favorite app??
Until this year Audible has been my favorite and main App on my phone; Google Maps was second. This year I have started using several other apps too: Chirp, Robinhood and over the past two months the Burger King App.

Sharing Beyond Books #394 Comment Giveaway May 2, 2020

Hello again and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB.
Thanks to everyone who commented last week. I hope you are continuing to stay safe.

Sorry, I misstated the question last week since Natalija was talking about favorite "titles of books" not favorite books. We had a mix of answers some to each question. Take a look back to check out some favorite books and favorite titles.

WEEK #394
(One Question.)

Becky asks: What books do you regret reading??
I can't really think of a book I regret reading. I have rated a couple books in the 2s but I can't say I regret reading them. I have finally allowed myself to DNF some titles but I don't think that means I regret trying them.

I couldn't resist this image!

Sharing Beyond Books #393 Comment Giveaway April 18, 2020

Hello again and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB.
Thanks to everyone who commented last week. I hope you are staying safe through this trying time.

All 15 of us agreed we had no real preference for release dates of books. The only exceptions are a) Christmas books preferred nearer the holidays instead of in the Spring and b) some of us want our favorite authors/series out ASAP. :-)

WEEK #393
(One Question.)

Natalija asks: What are some of your favorite book titles??
I have kept a spreadsheet on SBB since 2011 and thought this question had been asked. There were two similar but not the same: #326 in 2017 asked for favorite title(s) that year and #380 favorite recent/new to me author. So, let me think which favorite titles I want to pick if I am not limited to any particular year. Once I started looking at my yearly reading I got excited about sharing a pick for each year but decided that was too much. The exercise helped me to recall some authors I would like to read again.

Here are a handful of favorite titles:
Of course,
The Bible, which I have been re-reading for the past 10 years or so.
When I think of favorite books I think of three which I still have on my bookshelf - all read before I began reviewing:
1) Lightning by Dean Koontz (read between 200-2005)
2) The Hobbit or There And Back Again by J. R. R. Tolkien (my battered and yellow paperbook copy is from 1966; read in college back in the '70s)
3) The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara (my paperback copy from 1975; read in maybe 2005?)

Just a couple from review lists:
2013 Audible Book Review: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
2017 Book Review: From Afar by Roger Thomas

Sharing Beyond Books #392 Comment Giveaway April 4, 2020

Hello again and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB.
Thanks to everyone who commented last week. I hope you are staying safe through this trying time.

The last question all participants agreed they enjoy learning of other cultures through their reading - even if it is futuristic space cultures for Linda and me as we read a lot of sci-fi. Several people mentioned historical England and Native American genres. Also mentioned were Western Cultures, Australia, Feudal Japan, ancient China, current China, North Korea, India, New Orleans, and Fredamans mentioned Elif Shafak who is a Turkish-British author.

The Winner from SBB #391 comments is #1 Mystica who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the Updated (**Finally!) WEEK #392
(One Question.)

Miki asks: Is there a moment of the year when you prefer to have a new release (what time an author should release her/his book to have more chance of you buying it).
I don't have any preference on book releases dates/time of year. I do however keep an eye out for the next book in my favorite series. Two series that quickly come to mind are: Mercy Thompson (I will be picking up the latest just released in March)  and The Destroyermen series (I have last year's release to listen to and another is coming out in June).

WEEK #391
(One Question.)

Nikki asks: Do you like learning about other countries/cultures from fiction books? Please share at least one book and the country(ies)/culture(s) involved.
I do enjoy learning about other cultures and countries even though that is not a particular genre I seek out. As I review my list I don't see that many, at least not set in contemporary times. Most are historic England or sometimes India and historic Westerns. I really enjoy reading Native American characters but the most recent one I read with those elements was a fantasy, Trail of Lightening. Oh! One I remember I read a year or so ago was When Spring Comes to the DMZ. I obviously could do better reading more books of other cultures.

Hello again and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB.
Thanks to everyone who commented last week.

At least 10 of us like historical romances although the time periods range from Medieval, Scottish Highlander, Regency, Victorian, Western, 1900 and WWII. Four of us like sci-fi and fantasy including space, post-apocalyptic and parallel universe.

WEEK #390
(One Question.)

Fredamans asks: What is your favorite book to movie adaption??
We had a similar question in 2011 but I don't even recall my own answer then. :-)
The movie that comes to mind first is Lord of the Rings. Another one that comes to mind is Ender's Game which I had read years back. The movie helped me recall the book and make better sense of it.
Another favorite book to movie adaptation is To Kill a Mockingbird.
More recently I like the Harry Potter series and the Hunger Games adaptations.
I can think of more but I'll let you name some!
To Kill A Mockingbird Gregory Peck Harper Lee
