Sharing Beyond Books #226 November 7, 2015

Hello again and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB!
Is everyone preparing for the holidays? My DH said today he wants to get our artificial tree out soon. Aack!

Thanks to everyone who commented last week.
This was a fun question but I wasn't too surprised that the majority of us do not pick our reads by mood. Fredamans acknowledged that she does read by mood. Three others are influenced by mood but usually read something opposite, like reading light and happy to counter a sad mood.

The regular Winner from SBB #225 comments is: #9 Alyn who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the Updated ARC/Review titles or (not yet updated) Love titles - all linked near the end of the post. I'm hoping to update the book choices this week. Please let me know your choice by completing the (new) WINNER FORM.

WEEK #226 (One Question.)

bn100 asks: If you look at reviews, do you look at bad or good reviews first??
I look at good reviews first but I also check the less positive reviews. I want to make sure the reviews (good or bad) have some 'substance' and not just 'fluff'. And I look particularly for comments on items that might influence me like the sex level, language, or issues I don't want to read.

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! The supply of questions is dwindling so share some if you think of any -- even if they are duplicates I'll weed through or try to modify to use.

Your turn to share:

SBB Comment Winners can choose a selection from the Valentine and "Love" books or the February 2015 Newly Updated ARC/Review List. (My daughter pulled several of the Christmas titles to give with gift bags we made up for the nursing homes. One of these days I will get together a new box of Christmas titles.)

SBB Rules:
a) Must be a follower.
b) Share a comment on the question above.
Open internationally and an international winner may get a smaller book or a $5.00 GC if I decide the mailing is too much.
I will pick a Comment winner from all comments made through Saturday November 14, 2015 at 5 PM central.

  1. I check out the bad ones first to see what the problems are and if they are things that I can overcome.

  2. I read all the reviews that are linked to my blog both the good and bad ones. If its a blog I am particularly keen on it may affect my reading but generally once its on my Kindle it does get read.

  3. I look at the highest rated reviews first, then the lowest, and then I look at a few that are in between. I know there are fake reviews out there, so I like to read at least one of each star rating.

  4. I never read reviews before starting a book. At the most, I'll look at the average rating, and if that is high enough for me, I'll read it.

  5. I also read both baa and good reviews. It helps to break it down and geet both sides.
    Congrats to the winneer.

  6. i will first read the review by bloggers i know shares the same taste as me, then by those i trust even i know them less... doesn't matter if teh review is good or bad it doesn't influence my order of reading

  7. I usually look at the middle of the road and bad reviews first; I find they tend to have more substance and are more likely to be honest. I look for a pattern among the negative reviews--if many say the heroine is too good to be true, I tend to believe it; if one says it, I consider it an opinon. I look to see how many reviews there are. If there are a lot and the majority are four and five stars I'm more apt to believe it is a four or five star book than if there are just a few. If I'm on the fence, I look to see what other reviews the reviewers have written, particularly if the good reviews all went up about the same time. If the reviewers have written a lot of reviews, I tend to take them more seriously than if they only reviewed that book (probably because their friend the author asked them to)/

  8. If I am interested in a book I read both the good and bad reviews but I do read the good ones first.

  9. Congrats, Alyn! I read all reviews.

  10. I don't seek out either the good or bad reviews but just read what I come across. Then I make up my own mind.

  11. I tend to read a few positive and negative reviews for balance. However, if it's a book that I'm really looking forward to reading or one of my favorite series, then I tend to skip all the reviews, until after finishing the book. :)

  12. Congrats Alyn! I read both bad and good reviews. I read the reviews to see what people say about the book, but that doesn't hinder my thoughts about the story.

  13. I read both the bad & good reviews. Everyone has different tastes & preferences when it comes to books & I like to have a good perspective from both ends.

  14. I read a few of both, but mainly check to see if the is an overwhelming number of either good of bad.

  15. I read all the reviews if I am interested in a book. If the poor review % is high I pass on that book.
