Sharing Beyond Books #178 Comment Giveaway 11/22/14

Hello again on Saturday night and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB!

We had fun today making Christmas cookies with my daughter and her three children plus another friend with her four children. I survived for three and one half hours before I went to my room to read in quiet!
Happy Thanksgiving a bit early since it will be celebrated for many of us this coming week.

Thanks to everyone who commented last week.
Not one of twenty of us have taken a book binding class. Many didn't know such a class existed but most of us thought it would be interesting.

The Winner from SBB #177 comments is: #17 Elizabeth who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the ARC/Review titles, Christmas titles or Love titles - all linked near the end of the post.  Please let me know your choice by completing the (new) WINNER FORM.

WEEK #178 (One Question.)

Q1. This week Jess1 asks: 1. Have you ever not purchased a book because you disliked the cover??
A: Yes, I guess I would have to admit to being a cover snob and/or I am guilty of judging a book by its cover. There are bland covers that I tend to pass or, worse, amateurish covers that make me think the book would also be of lesser quality. And lately I have been turned off by too much skin on a book cover.
BTW - If you want a good laugh, and shake of the head, do a google search for bad book covers! Oh My - some are unspeakable!
We know that The Wheel of Time is a very successful series
but I don't think I would have been interested from this old cover.

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! We still have a supply of questions but from the same people so hopefully others will send more in -- even if they are duplicates I'll weed through or try to modify to use.

Your turn to share:

Q1. Jessl asks: 1. Have you ever not purchased a book because you disliked the cover??

SBB Comment Winners can choose a selection from the Valentine and "Love" books, the Christmas Giveaway Books (this is the new link), or the June 2013 Newly Updated ARC/Review List.

SBB Rules:
a) Must be a follower.
b) Share a comment on either of the two questions above.
Open internationally and an international winner may get a smaller book or a $5.00 GC if I decide the mailing is too much.
I will pick a Comment winner from all comments made through Saturday November 29, 2014 at 5 PM  central.

  1. I am guilty of judging books by their covers. A habit my daughter is trying to break me of.

  2. Yes, I'm guilty of not buying a book because of it's cover. I'm sorry to say. :) I had heard so much about a new series for a couple of years and wanted to read it. I took one look at the cover and said " maybe another time". It was a plain blue cover with a small symbol at the top. Just didn't call out to me. Eventually I did read it and it's my favorite series.

  4. I've often not purchased a romance book because I thought the cover was just too sexy---I like romance, not sex books.

  5. Yes I have - covers are what draw me in to authors I'm not familiar with. I will buy my favorite authors no matter what the cover looks like though

  6. Congrats Elizabeth!
I guess yes. If the cover doesn't intrigue me enough to pick it up and read the synopsis, I won't bother. I bet I have passed on tons of greats because of it.

  7. Oh, I know what you mean by judging a book by its cover. I almost passed on Dying for Living by Kory M. Shrum because the cover looked more like a murder mystery than an urban fantasy. And I know what you mean by the Wheel of Time covers. As much as I am enjoying the books, I have never been wowed by the covers. Oh, and Gena Showalter books! Ha! The covers really focus on the scantily clad bits of the book instead of all the cool aliens, scifi tech, and authoritative women.

  8. No, my purchase decision is based on several factors. Admittedly an attractive cover draws the eye & would make me take a second look

  9. Occasionally, I'll skip a book if the cover doesn't seem interesting enough. However, I agree with a previous comment...I'll always read my favorite authors' books, despite the covers.

    And thanks! :)

  10. I'm guilty of that. I also feel an amateurish cover means I will not like the story either.

  11. Sometimes, I'll buy a book that I didn't like the cover because of the author or review etc, but there have been books that had covers that caused me to reject the book.
