Sharing Beyond Books #117 Comment Giveaway 9/14/13

Hello again on Saturday night and Welcome to SBB, Sharing Beyond Books.

I hope everyone had a good week as the weather starts to change. :-) I was busy with some travel to court hearings this week - good listening time. Today I have been slogging along, home bound with a yucky flu/cold that my DH was so sweet to share with me. :-(

Five people always finish. At least eight of us "rarely" do not finish. Everyone tries to give the books a chance through 50 pages or a couple of chapters and some will try more than once to get through.

Only five of 25 have attended a rally, most in college but at least one, Fredamans, for a traffic safety issue. Mary P says she could see attending one on an issue of importance. Two people have written letters or signed petitions.

Thank you to all who shared last week.

The Winner from SBB #116 comments is: #5 Carol NW who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the ARC/Review titles, Christmas titles or Love titles - all linked near the end of the post.  Please let me know your choice by completing the (new) WINNER FORM.

WEEK #117

Q1. Mary P asks: Do you still borrow books from a library? and Liss asks: How many books do you get from the library when you visit??
A: Sad to say I have not been to the library for several years. I have enough books on my TBR shelves, my Kindle and my Audible library to last a long time.

Q2. My non-bookish Question: Have you ever visited jail other than on tour??
A: I didn't want to put anyone on the spot by asking "have you ever been in jail?" :-) I have visited jail several times even though I never did criminal law. I worked on an Appeals project for a few years and would visit inmates at a women's prison.  Also I have visited jail a few times when our choir has gone in for special performances. Getting through those double doors can be rather alarming.

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! We are getting low on questions so hopefully you will send more in -- even if they are duplicates I'll weed through or try to modify to use.

Your turn to share:

Q1. Mary P asks: Do you still borrow books from a library? and Liss asks: How many books do you get from the library when you visit??

Q2. My nonbookish Question this week: Have you ever visited jail other than on tour??

  1. Q1: Yes, I still borrow from the library. Depending on how many I find to read determines on how many I borrow. Right now I have about 15 from the library.
Q2: No, I have never visit a jail.

  2. I usually use the library for audiobooks, and even then, usually go online only. We used to go all the time for my son to get books, but we haven't since we moved at the beginning of the summer.

I've never been to a jail, for a tour or otherwise.

  3. 1. The libraries where I live are quite hopeless. I buy my books.
    2. No. Not a place I'd want to visit for any reason.

  4. 1. Unfortunately, I don't use the library anymore, since the one here only has books in Greek. However, I loved visiting libraries in the States...even worked at one for a while. :)

    2. I've never been to jail.

  5. 1. The last time I was in a library was when we had to wait while our house was being shown. When I moved to Texas, I loaded up with library books but now that I have been entering giveaways, I have three bookcases of them. So I don't go to bookstores or libraries any more. I still hear the siren call from them though.

    2. I have never been in a jail. But I do have a story. My friend who is a psychiatrist had to visit a jail for a court proceeding. This giant of a man picked her up and everyone got afraid of what he might do. She is 4'6" and slender. She was scared but tried to act like she wasn't. She firmly said "Put me down". He did!

  9. 1. I do visit the library when I need a book for work or for bookclub (and I don't want to buy it). I usually only pick up the book I was looking for.
    2. Yes, I have visited a jail to watch the prison writing program my work sponsors.

  10. Congrats winner.
I still go to the library on a regular basis. And I still check out too many books causing my TRP to just sit there untouched lately. That's going to change though.

When my son lived in MN and we visited him he took us on a tour of the Police Department and jail (which was empty). He was a police Officer, not an inmate. :)

  11. 1. During my school days I used to get 1 or 2 books a week from library but now in college I don't as my college do not have a nice collection... I have better than my college library.

    2. I have never been to any jail....

  12. 1. I do borrow books from the library. I usually get one or two at a time.

    2. I have never visited a jail or been in jail. lol

  13. Q1. I haven't borrowed from the library in a long time, but I just recently signed up for a card. And they let us check out ebooks, so that's exciting. Usually I will only check out 1 or 2, as I already have lots to read.

Q2. Well, I did my college internship at a prison. :)

  14. 1. I can't afford to buy all of the books I want to read, so to the library we go. I always love my visits. I did as a child too. I usually borrow the maximum of about 10. I can have them for a month & can always renew if they haven't been reserved.

    2. I've been on jail tours - olden days type Historical jails. I've never visited a modern jail, way too scary & I don't know who I'd visit.

  15. I do visit the library. Our town library is only a block away from our home.

I have never visited a jail.

  16. We do not have libraries that borrow "new" books, they just have Harry Potter's books, and educational. Yeah, so sad. But I did borrow two books from my college's library. When I go to the library to buy some books, I usually want to stay just with one book, but I always end up buying two.

I have visited jail, I'm a law student, so I have entered there (really creepy, actually) a couple of times.

  17. Q1. Haven't been to one since uni. The good libraries are really far away. Sadly.

Q2. Nope and nope. We don't have jail tours here. And I have no one to visit (thank goodness)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Q1. I very rarely borrow books, I mostly borrow movies, but even that is rarely.

Q2. No. The only jail I've ever been to is Alcatraz on a tour.

  19. 1 - Yes - I love my library, and I can request a book from a "local" group of about 20 libraries and also from a larger network around the state

2 - No - just those old ones on historical tours

    ReplyDelete
  20. My library lets you reserve books online - so if I am hurrying home, I am just in & out to pick up my reserved books. If I have time to browse, I usually need a bag.

Nope, never visited a jail, though I have visited a museum of historical European torture & persuasion artifacts.
