Sharing Beyond Books #75 November 17, 2012

Hello and Welcome to another SBB!

Happy Saturday Night. Has it been a good week for everyone? I did get some antibiotics this week so hopefully I can put this "crud" (the diagnosis - LOL) behind me. But I didn't get bed rest as the doctor ordered since I had to get up at 3am Friday to drive to Tallahassee for a plane to South Florida. I had a deposition to cover late in the day and then flew back this morning. So I'm tired now.  But on the positive side - I got some extra reading time on the plane. :-)

Thank you to all who shared last week.

Seems about half of us like anthologies, especially for meeting new authors or for a quicker reading time. However, several of you mentioned you weren't so big on anthologies as you prefer longer stories.

I like all the things we are thankful for! Family is a BIG one for many of us. (I hope nrlymrtl's broken foot is healing.) I particularly liked how Sarah phrased one of her thanks: "I am thankful that I have opportunities to pursue my passions, and not just fight to survive." Nice wording and nice sentiment.

The Winner from SBB #74 comments is: #5 mammabunny13 There are still 5 'love' books to pick from and new Christmas choices. mammabunny13 please choose a book (or GC if international) from the remaining five Love Books List for Giveaway, the new Christmas Giveaway Book list, OR pick from the Updated ARC/Review List and let me know your choice, your address and a choice of bookmarks by completing the WINNER FORM.

WEEK #75 Questions

Q1. Miki asks: When you are reading a book in which the character has a special activity or hobby (a sport, knitting etc) does that make you want to try this activity??
I may find activities interesting but I rarely try them. What? Take away time from reading? I don't think so. LOL. Although I have to admit I sometimes wish I had a talent for art - I know I do not.

Q2. I'll give Elizabeth credit for this Q as I noted she had it in suggestions: ... a) What are you Thankful for this year (so next TWO choices) OR b) What is a favorite Thanksgiving tradition??
A: I am listing more Thankful items: #3 Friends and #4 Books and Blogging about books!

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions.    Thanks for sending in questions! We can always use fresh questions.

Your turn to share:

  1. 1. Not really, which is odd because when I watch something on TV, I want to try it.
    2. Thankful for my parents and my new smartphone.

  2. 1. Not really, especially if it's got anything to do with sports *shudders*. I'd much rather stick to reading! And with my humongous TBR piles, who's got time for more hobbies anyway? ;-)

    2. I'm thankful that I had the chance to meet my overseas friend Amy for the very first time this September. And I'm thankful the big heat of the summer is finally over.

  3. 1. I've tried and given up so many hobbies that I don't feel compelled to try them when I read about them. Although I do sometimes want to start knitting again when I read about it. But it's hard to read and knit at the same time.

    2. I love big Thanksgiving dinners with turkey and stuffing and all the trimmings. I don't enjoy cooking or cleaning up after them though.

  4. 1.No I have never picked up a hobby or interest because of a book I read, I have found a couple recipes though

    2. I'm so thankful for my 2 boys and hubby and our health and can't forget my 2 springers who make me laugh every day

  5. If there are good descriptions of food in the book or one of the characters likes to cook, then I sometimes make a meal based on the book (like the food in Stoker's Dracula).

One my favorite things about thanksgiving food is all the variations in stuffing. There is always a new stuffing recipe to try out.

  6. 1. Yes and no. Most of the time I'd say no. BUT, while/after reading Candis Terry's first 2 books, I felt like baking! Her characters own a bakery and reading about the scents and doughy bits made me hungry and want to take up baking. If ONLY I wasn't so lazy.

    2. Oh dear. I put my 3 choices in last week's comment! Argh....Okay I'll cheat a lil shall I? My 2nd and 3rd would be 2nd, Friends, and 3rd, Authors and their wonderful books! I've discovered so many great new ones this year so very thankful for that!

I don't celebrate Thanksgiving but how I'd LOVE to have turkey with cranberry sauce. You Americans have it so good! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

  7. ^^ i'm so happy one of my questions was chosen
    1) i'm not talented so i often get curious but i don't dare to try

2)i'm thankful i was selected to participate in the additional course i'm following
and i'm also thankful to have been able to give some joy to other people

  8. 1) I s2 hobbies so much and sometimes I intend to try different ones when the characters in a book do that, but most of time I give up for my lack of time =( Most of my free time is for reading anyway =s

    2) I am thankful for working with book translations! A dream come true!

    Happy Thanksgiving <3

  9. Sometimes I do want to take up a hobby I've read about like photography. One of our traditions is that we put up the tree right after Thanksgiving dinner.

  10. 1. I may take a passing interest in whatever hobby the characters are interested in, but it's never made me give it a go. I'm thinking polo and sailing for instance. Who has the time - or bank account?

    2. Uppermost in my mind right now is being thankful that I live in a country that's at peace.

I'm in Australia. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving, but that doesn't mean we still can't be thankful..

  11. 1. No, not really though sometimes if the activity is a profession or something that's portrayed to be interesting and cool then I would get curious.

    2. I'm also thankful for being able to pursue an education and to have little things that make me happy.

  12. 1) Yes, I do get the urge to try out the hobby, but I usually read fast enough that the urge passes before I act on it. Sometimes I do silly things though, like today I was reading a book where a character makes home made potato chips . . . it turns out that I am not very good at making potato chips.

    2) I am thankful for my family and all the opportunities and blessings we have been given in this life.

  13. 1. Sometimes it does.
    2. I am thankful for my family.

  14. 1. Not really. I'm happy to live vicariously through the characters.

    2. I'm thankful for a supportive family and for the two cats we just adopted. They're great comforts!

  15. 1. Sometimes I try new activities.

    2. I'm thankful for my friends and our church. My favorite aspect of Thanksgiving is a delightful meal with family and friends. :)

  16. 1. When I read Debbie Macomber's books that feature knitters, I WISH I knew how to knit, but I have never tried to learm.

    2. My son married last weekend, so I am most thankful for a loving family. Many family members were there plus our new extended family, so it really was a blessing to be surrounded by love, loyalty, and strong roots.

Happy Thanksgiving, Martha and all readers here!

  17. 1. If the hobby/sport sounds interesting, I will try it. There were novels where the characters are musicians and there went me trying hard to play my guitar and piano :)

    2. I am always thankful for my friends. I don't have many, but chosen few who I trust. Thanksgiving is such a wonderful day to celebrate with family and close friends and no matter how far we had become, it's as if we were not separated and time stood still when we met for this occasion.

  18. 1. It depends if I have the items in my possession to try the new hobby. If I don't or can't picked the items nesseccary second hand, then I pass as this will not be cost effective.
    2. What am I thankful for. I am thankful my family and I have a roof over our heads as opposed to a worse scenario.

  19. 1. no
    2. family, friends

  20. Sometimes I find myself tempted to, for example water skiing or mountain climbing. But other smaller hobbies, such as chess, I have tried.
I am thankful for my family, friends, and our health. :)
