Sharing Beyond Books #440 Comment Giveaway February 19, 2022

Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the last question.
Last post SBB#439 BN100 asked: Have you found any new products last year that you like? If so, what are they?
Four commenters could not think of any new product. Six of us shared: Spicey Korean Chicken, happy craft planner, a sock hanger, a cool, useful spice dispenser, a hand blender and a counter grater. Thanks for sharing!

For US participants: I need to update and refill the books available to US winners. I have used "Love" and "Christmas" titles as well as ARC titles. Since the supply is lower, I have author collections I could choose from, mostly romance - historical, suspense and some contemporary. What genres/books/authors would you like me to include?

The Winner from SBB#439 comments is #1 FREDAMANS who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the Updated (**Finally!) ARC/Review titles or (recently updated) Love and Christmas titles - all linked near the end of the post. -- [9-18-2021 I have added a new box and crossed off books no longer available through August 2021.]

Please let me know your choice by completing the WINNER FORM.
WEEK #440
(One Question.)
Scattered Leaves asks: Have you ever bought a “bookish” item on Etsy? For example, a book necklace, bookmarks, etc.??
I cannot think of anything that I have purchased on Etsy although I have looked at many wonderful items.

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month, I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a 1/2 book choice or $2.50 towards GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! The supply of questions is dwindling so share some if you think of any -- even if they are duplicates I'll weed through or try to modify them.

February Questions were shared by BN100 and Scattered Leaves. They get 1/2 of a book or $2.50. Thanks for the questions!

Your turn to share.
Scattered Leaves asks: Have you ever bought a “bookish” item on Etsy? For example, a book necklace, bookmarks, etc.??

SBB Comment Winners can choose a selection from the Updated ARC and Other books, including the "Love" and Christmas titles all in one post.

SBB Rules:
a) Must be a follower.
b) Share a comment on the question above.
Open internationally and an international winner may get a smaller book or a $5.00 GC if I decide the mailing is too much.
I will pick a Comment winner from all comments made through Saturday, March 5, 2022, at 5 PM central.

Publisher's Summary
Don't ever let it break you.
The United Eastern States is crumbling. The fragile house of cards that Lee Harden and Angela Houston have built has begun to fall. Lee is up against a ticking clock, as he is recalled from Texas and given the last thing in the world that he wants: a promotion.
Forced into a command role, Major Harden is thrust into a sharp learning curve that goes against every instinct he's developed over years of fighting. As Lee races to find his footing in a mire of shifting loyalties and opposing goals, Safe Zones are being overrun by massive hordes of primals exhibiting strange behaviors and uncanny levels of intelligence, and Greeley is moving toward an invasion of the UES. The envoys from Canada and the United Kingdom know it - but they're refusing to take sides and give Lee the intelligence he desperately needs.
As the tides of war reach the doors of the UES, horrific secrets are revealed that will change the future of their fight for survival. Friends become enemies, and enemies become allies. But no matter what happens, no matter what - or who - he loses, Lee can't let it break him. He must remain defiant to the last.

Review:
This is book 4 in the series and picks up from the prior book. Lee Hardin is in Texas but gets the call from United Eastern States President, Angela Houston, to return to the home base to take military command. The UES has already been forced out of the Fort Bragg that Lee and Angela helped build when the infected Primals overran the base with the unwitting help of the Lincolnist rebels. Angela is coping with internal threats in the form of the continuing hidden rebels, unrest due to overcrowding and boredom. The external threats are increasing in the form of threats from President Brigg’s forces seeking to squelch the UES as well as the infected Primals who seem to be getting more organized. Several more of the Safe Zones in the Southeast have fallen and been demolished as the Primals kidnap the women and wipe out the surviving human communities. Envoys from Canada and the United Kingdom are monitoring President Briggs in Colorado and Angela in the UES. They are trying to determine if it is safer to lend their support to the rational but weakened forces and civilians in the UES or President Briggs, a clearly power hungry leader, who has stronger and better prepared military forces but has lost control of the necessary fuel sources.

When arriving to the new base of operations, Lee immediately sees areas of loyalty concerns, but he would rather continue to be fighting in the field than being the Major in charge in the tactical operations center (TOC). He struggles trying to find the right place and right approach to help Angela and the people. Unfortunately, while he is stumbling, the advance forces of President Briggs’ army are moving into the UES territory.

The local scavenging and hunter forces are able to uncover more information about the Primal activity. They also are pulled into a dangerous rescue attempt to save some of the kidnapped women. The information comes to Lee at the last minute as he is busy planning to defend the home base against expected exterior attack and suddenly facing unexpected attacks too.

My heart felt the continual attacks, deaths, and betrayals in this book. I enjoyed the action and Lee’s external and mental internal struggles. There is more bad language than I like to deal with but I can get past it. I am looking forward to picking up the next book in the series. I recommend this to fans of post-apocalyptic military stories that include more advanced zombie elements.

Audio Notes: Christian Rummel has been the voice for this series and he continues to enhance my enjoyment in the books.

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost TWELVE years I have posted 91 groups of mostly 16 books plus an additional 21 totaling approximately 1,535 books available to find new homes! (As of November 26, 2021).

I am happy to say that so far at least 1,392 books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A year or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Note rules here regarding international entries.
Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, TWRP, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors, your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to faraway places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

Repeating this helpful blog tip: You can right click on a link and you will be given the choice to open the link in a new window or tab so you do not navigate away from the screen you are on!! I use this all the time!

eBook Book Review: Bad Wolf (Bad Wolf Chronicles Book 1) by Tim McGregor

A gripping mix of Cop and Wolf.

Bad Wolf (Bad Wolf Chronicles Book 1) by [Tim McGregor]
ASIN ‏ : ‎ B004YR8F2A
Publication date ‏ : ‎ April 29, 2011 File size ‏ : ‎ 657 KB
Print length ‏ : ‎ 267 pages
Genre: Crime Thriller, Paranormal, Werewolf
My Rating: 4.0 of 5.0 Overall; Story 4.0; Narration 4.0.

Detective Lara Mendes’s hard work pays off when she finally gets to join the homicide detail. There’s only one catch; she has to partner up with a cop no one wants to work with.
John Gallagher is a veteran homicide detective who wants nothing more than to work alone. When the Lieutenant partners him with Lara Mendes, his first reaction is to ditch her but a call comes in about a body on the river bank and the rotation says they’re up.
What they find are human remains, mutilated and partially devoured. Their investigation reveals a killer stalking the city with a pack of vicious, feral dogs.
And the suspect believes he is a werewolf.
But this is Portland, where crazy bastards outnumber normal ones ten to one. Except there’s another catch. The crazy werewolf guy? He isn’t crazy...

Review:
Detective Lara Mendes has been working hard to be assigned to the homicide detail. When one of the current detectives is injured, Lara is glad to move onto the team even if she is paired with a difficult partner, John Gallagher. Their first call together takes them to a mutilated and partially devoured body. They soon learn that the killer was accompanied by a pack of feral dogs.

They manage to track the suspect to his home where they confiscate a group of journals. John says they are illegible, but Lara digs in to read the journals. What she learns is that the suspect believes he is a werewolf. Lara, and especially John, think this is all in the guy’s head, until Lara gets trapped with the beast and is bitten.

This book kept my interest. I liked the police procedure aspect and it's mix with werewolf legend. There is danger, action, horror, and sorrow. It is not for the squeamish as the story is gritty and gory in parts.

This is a scary, not cuddly, werewolf, although the author does a good job creating some sympathy through the creature’s history and emotional turmoil. This book has a conclusion but continues with a new wolf. I wouldn’t mind reading the sequels although it probably won’t happen soon. I recommend this to readers who would like the mix of police procedure and wolf savagery.

Sunday Post #318 Chairs, Compliance, and Storms
I am linking with Sunday Post at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? now at The Book Date (at Wordpress)
What Are You Reading? is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

Oh work, oh work, oh work. Yes - that's how I feel sometimes.

Did you watch the Superbowl today? Hubby forwarded through the commercials and show parts so I didn't get to see any of that. I have to go back to watch or check those through media. I thought it was a pretty good came although I was rooting for the Bengals.

Hubby is continuing to improve with less coughing and better breathing. He is slowly shedding the water weight so we can see wrinkles in his feet. Now he is struggling to stay asleep during the night. He woke up almost every hour last night.

We meet with the contractor this week to clarify some of the interior details like pass throughs in the offices, door designs, paint color, etc. This kitchen area got squished by the increased ADA bathrooms so I plan to ask them to move the storage closet to open up the kitchen area. (The tables were left in for use by the workmen. They don't belong there.)

We had a couple of days last week that harbinger spring! Then the winds blow and the cold settles in again. Tomorrow morning 6am temp is expected to be 30 degrees. At least I don't have to go out until 9am.

My reading and listening was good this week, and I finished the ebook and one audio.  I posted two reviews and my usual memes.

I visited 15 blogs last week.
Shout Out this week to GENRE BOOKS AND ME. I like Mia's header tag: "All I need in life to be happy is ... a stack of books, a cup of tea, an armchair, and a cat!" That sounds good to me.

Audible offerings for free children's titles ended June 30.
Audiobooks.com is still sharing some free listens for children.

These were last week's posts:

Mickey7
by Edward Ashton
John Pirhalla (Narrator)
Katharine Chin (Narrator)
Listening Length: 9 hours and 16 minutes
This looks like an interesting sci fi to me.
Source: 2022 NetGalley.

Mickey7, an "expendable," refuses to let his replacement clone Mickey8 take his place.
Dying isn’t any fun…but at least it’s a living.
Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.
On a fairly routine scouting mission, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead. By the time he returns to the colony base, surprisingly helped back by native life, Mickey7’s fate has been sealed. There’s a new clone, Mickey8, reporting for Expendable duties. The idea of duplicate Expendables is universally loathed, and if caught, they will likely be thrown into the recycler for protein.
Mickey7 must keep his double a secret from the rest of the colony. Meanwhile, life on Niflheim is getting worse. The atmosphere is unsuitable for humans, food is in short supply, and terraforming is going poorly. The native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, and that curiosity has Commander Marshall very afraid. Ultimately, the survival of both lifeforms will come down to Mickey7.
That is, if he can just keep from dying for good.

The Fair (Time Box #2)
by John A. Heldt
I enjoy this author and his time travel families.
This is moving along fairly well so I am at 20%.
Source: June 20, 2021 received from the author.

Months after stealing two time machines from a madman who wants them back, the Lanes, a family of six, seek safety and contentment in 1893, the latest stop on a journey through time. While parents Mark and Mary find relief at Chicago's World's Columbian Exposition, an extravaganza of science and splendor, children Jeremy, Laura, and Ashley find romance, friendship, and thrills.
Older son Jordan, meanwhile, heads west in search of answers. Grieving the loss of a lover from 1865, he travels to Virginia City, Nevada, where he integrates himself into a storied mining community and the heart of a pretty library clerk.
Billionaire Robert Devereux could not care less. Reeling from the theft of his million-dollar devices, he sends an assassin to the past to retrieve his property and rid the world of his former business partner and his troublesome clan.
Filled with humor, heartbreak, and suspense, THE FAIR follows a modern family on the adventure of a lifetime as they navigate their way through an unforgettable year in American history.

Still many titles through InstaFreebie and many new author requests I haven't replied to.

Welcome to Mailbox Monday.

Mailbox Monday is a gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week and explore great book blogs. This Meme started with Marcia at A Girl and Her Books (fka The Printed Page) and after a tour of hosts has returned to its permanent home at Mailbox Monday. Thanks to the ladies sharing hosting duties: Serena of Savvy Verse & Wit, me and new to the team, Velvet at vvb32reads. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

I selected and received two new NetGalley books for review.
No books at Audible this week.
I broke down and spent $2.97 to purchase three audiobooks at Chirp.
When I went to consider my February VIP at Audiobooks.com I discovered a Flash 2 for 1 Credit Romance selection and picked up two titles by Mary Balogh.

I got one free Kindle books.

Are your mailbox and TBR piles blooming?
