If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost EIGHT years I have posted 82 groups of 16 plus an additional 21 totaling 1,333 books to find new homes! (as of November 9, 2018).

I am happy to say that so far about 1,271+ books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A year or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. Review:
Meg, a former cop, and her trained Labrador, Hawk, are part of an FBI elite K-9 search and rescue team. Meg and her sister are active in rescuing dogs and training them for service use or just to be well behaved companions. The K-9 team is called in when a bomb traps people under the damaged Department Agriculture building. There were children visiting when the bombing occurred, so the K-9 team is desperate to locate survivors. Meg and Hawk work closely with firefighter, Todd Webb, to save an injured girl.

The search work is exhausting and a reporter happens to capture an image of Meg and Hawk after she leaves the site and collapses on a bench trying to recover her equilibrium. The photo angers the bomber as it takes focus away from his actions. He emails the reporter, Clay McCord, expressing his anger and intent to continue.

Meg is suspect of Clay’s connection with the bomber and makes an effort to meet him. They are meet at a dog park and set up a tentative agreement to share information. The bombings continue with horrendous consequences. Meg, Hawk and her team continue to pursue clues while Clay shares what information he can.

The disgruntled bomber escalates his attacks and Meg’s involvement may make her a personal target. The race is on for the FBI to locate the bomber before he can complete another major attack.

There are applicable search terms highlighted at the beginning of each chapter which I found interesting. I enjoyed the skills of Hawk as a search and rescue and attack dog. There is a strong bond with Meg as Hawk’s handler and the author shares emotional background resulting from Meg’s loss of a prior dog. Meg is a good character although I was a little surprised by the depth of her own anger. I like the connections with Clay and Todd which give the chance for further development in the series.

The story is fast-paced and moves along easily. I would get more books in the series. I recommend it to readers who like mysteries and K-9 elements.

Audio Notes: Angela Dawe does a fine job with the narration. She is able to give both the femail and male characters their own voices. I settled in and enjoyed the listen.

As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so. The latest trainee detective to work with him is the son of a member of his former team, and together they begin to unravel the truth about what happened to Wayne Fletcher. As the investigation proceeds, it becomes clear that others are involved - some seem determined to prevent it, some seem to be taking too much interest. In the end, Smith operates alone, having stepped too far outside standard procedures to ask for support. He knows that his own life might be at risk but he has not calculated on the life of his young assistant also being put in danger.

Review:
Sergeant Smith is a bit older and old school detective, a former D.C.I. (Detective Chief Inspector) . He isn’t everyone’s favorite detective but many respect his long term, senior experience, particularly his immediate superior, D.I. Reeve. Smith has just returned to the office after a short leave as the result of an internal investigation. Reeve presents him with two tasks: begin the training of a new rookie, Chris Waters, and take a look at and sign off (maybe) on an apparent accidental drowning of a local sixth form student.

The weekend officers gathered the facts, wrote up the report which was ready to be signed. But Reeve spotted a potential issue and slips the file to Smith. Smith is pretty quick to pick up on a discrepancy and he assigns Waters procedural investigative tasks as Smith interviews the mortuary technologist who added an interesting note to the autopsy report.

Smith pursues one clue and lead after another with dogged determination. Even when sneers come from other officers and a potential “stand down” order comes from higher up, Smith insists on pushing on. Smith and Waters are trying to find a witness who has failed to come forward and who may be the last to have seen the victim alive. The investigation leads Smith to a Balkan community in the area and to a possible connection to a former military officer. Smith spots someone following him and he realizes that his inquiries are bringing more risk to him and his young partner.

As he pursues the facts there is an interesting glimpse into his background through his relationship with other officers, including with Waters who happens to be the son of one of Smith’s oldest friends from the force. I thoroughly enjoyed this British police procedural. Smith is a well-developed character whose strengths have created some tension which adds moments of humor as he faces off with the department Superintendent. The well plotted mystery has elements of political animus that is timely. The story moves at a good pace and the emphasis is on hard detective work rather than graphic violence. I would be glad to read more stories featuring Detective Smith. I recommend this to readers who enjoy a good police mystery.

Audio Notes: Gildart Jackson provides perfect accent and energy to the narration. He provides unique voices that fit the characters. His performance helped me to enjoy the quick listen. I would be glad to listen to more title narrated by Mr. Jackson.

We were fortunate not to have hurricane Dorian touch much of Florida but we are praying for those communities, Bahamas and US, who were hit so badly. It will be a very long time of recovery.

I am moving along on the TBRs but I still need to read 2.43 books a week to reach the goal this year. Since this will limit my choices from longer and newer books I may choose to reduce that goal. We'll see.
I had another fun week of reading/listening. I finished four titles: 3 audiobooks and 1 ebook. I posted five reviews and my usual memes.

I was back to 18 blog visits last week.

Most teens dream of visiting the City of Lights, but it feels more like a nightmare for Sophie Brooks. She and her brother are sent to Paris to spend the summer with their father, who left home a year ago without any explanation. As if his sudden abandonment weren't betrayal enough, he's about to remarry, and they’re expected to play nice with his soon-to-be wife and stepdaughter. The stepdaughter, Camille, agrees to show them around the city, but she makes it clear that she will do everything in her power to make Sophie miserable.

Sophie could deal with all the pain and humiliation if only she could practice piano. Her dream is to become a pianist, and she was supposed to spend the summer preparing for a scholarship competition. Even though her father moved to Paris to pursue his own dream, he clearly doesn't support hers. His promise to provide her with a piano goes unfulfilled.

Still, no one is immune to Paris’s charm. After a few encounters with a gorgeous French boy, Sophie finds herself warming to the city, particularly when she discovers that he can help her practice piano. There’s just one hitch—he’s a friend of Camille’s, and Camille hates Sophie. While the summer Sophie dreaded promises to become best summer of her life, one person could ruin it all.

I completed four books and posted five reviews so that keeps me current with reviews.
I have been adding newer reviews to NetGalley, Goodreads, Amazon and Audible. (Eventually I will add older reviews.)
My NetGalley shelf is still at 10 unread. I have pulled/read titles released and on my list before July. Next week I expect to start titles I received in July. [Plus I have 4 old titles (2012-13.)]
I have three author ebook titles left in queue. I plan to get caught up on these too- I better start soon.
Still many titles through InstaFreebie and many new author requests I haven't replied to.

I picked up my second review title this week for Ladies Book Club.
I resisted the 3 for 2 credit sale deciding to save my credits for titles I really want. I picked one daily deal this week.
I have two free September Audible Originals to pick and one Free VIP at Audiobooks. I will probably choose two for one credit deals at Audiobooks soon.

Sunday Words of Encouragement September 8, 2019

Our Sunday School teacher showed us part of a video today: God of Wonders. I love these scientific documentaries that show the awesome, wonderful, amazing creation of God!

We had lovely praise and worship before moving into the Pastor’s sermon continuing in
the Culture Shift series.
First we looked outside the church to note the Point: We must lead people by our lives, to the real Jesus of the Bible.
The second week Pastor noted the need for a shift within the church with the Point: Every person most positively contribute to a culture of KINDNESS.
Week three discussed setting priorities in our lives with the Point: The only way to truly worship God is to find all our satisfaction in Him.

Church shouldn't be walking with the world (although it might be very good if the world were walking with church). Yet, we need to be within the culture to help change it.

Satan wants to keep people from worshiping God and it is important for us to make worship a Lifestyle, not just Sunday service.

If you walk in uninvited to a private club you feel like you don’t belong but that attitude changes if you are invited as a guest. Belonging to an exclusive club is touted as something special, of extra value and the public is encouraged to pay extra. But exclusivity shouldn't be part of the church.

In the old testament, God's people were select, special, set apart. But that changed in God’s Christ based church. Those who believe in Christ have the right to become children of God, part of a new family. John 1:6-13. We receive a new identity; we become part of the family of God.

There is always a tension, a pull back to former culture. 2 Corinthians 5:13-15. Our culture changes but you can distinguish families by various identity markers such as: outwardly demonstrative or reserved; patriarchal or matriarchal; blessed or depressed; abusive or loving. But God is in the business of breaking family chains. 2 Corinthians 5:16-20.

The Point: The church, the family of God, have been made ambassadors of Christ.

Who are you? Ambassadors are supposed to go to others seeking to make a connection, carry a message. Our message to the world is “Come to Jesus; Come Back to God”.
What makes a healthy family culture? We may have an imperfect church, an imperfect pastor, and we may be imperfect people. Even so, we learn to love one another. We open wide the doors to the narrow gate. We don’t have to “become” first, it is okay to belong first.
Belong, believe, become.

Who are you? We (the church) are family, not an institution.
Invite someone to sit with you. Commit and invest. What will you do as an ambassador?

I couldn’t find this with lyrics but this lively song fits the message today.
