It's Monday What are You Reading? October 7, 2013.

This meme starts at Book Journey!

What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

Once again my work week was busy but not overly stressful. Reading still continues to be very good.  I finished four books and posted five reviews so I'm making a little progress with reviews but still have a couple of full weeks coming up.  I posted three book Giveaways and one Tour Feature Giveaway.
I also posted the weekly Mailbox Monday, Friday Pick Giveaway, Saturday Snapshot, Sharing Beyond Books Comment Giveaway and Sunday Words.

I did a little visiting last week and will try to do more again.
Thanks as always to all the nice people who visit me.

These were last week's posts plus win post:
  • Book Review with Giveaway: Sisterhood by Deleyna Marr, Romantic Suspense, Paranormal, my rating 4.25. Ends 10/11/13.

Just Ella
by Annette K. Larsen
I am looking forward to this.
My review will post on 10/18

as part of BookBlast Blog Tour.
Book Description
Publication Date: August 14, 2013
A Proper, Clean Romance.
Ariella was only looking for a distraction, something to break up the monotony of palace life. What she found was a young man willing to overlook her title and show her a new and vibrant way of life. But when her growing feelings for Gavin spiral out of control and clash with the expectations of her station, she will discover that the consequences of her curiosity are far more severe than she’d imagined.

"I watched in helpless horror as two guards hauled Gavin to his feet and dragged him from the room. My voice was frozen, unable to protest as another guard took hold of my arm, leading me upstairs. From the confines of my room, I stared into the darkness beyond my window, hoping to catch one more glimpse of Gavin. He was gone, and I wondered if he would have been better off if he had never met me."

The Christmas He Loved Her (Bad Boys of Crystal Lake)
by Juliana Stone

This seems like it will be an emotional romance.
Reviewing for Sourcebooks, to post with ARC giveaway.
Book Description
Publication Date: September 24, 2013
"Will appeal to readers of Cathie Linz and Susan Elizabeth Phillips."—Booklist
All he wants this Christmas is her...

In the small town of Crystal Lake, Christmas is a time for sledding, hot chocolate, and cozying up to the fire with those you love. For Jake Edwards, it's also time to come home and face the music. He thought there would never be anything harder than losing his brother. Turns out there is: falling in love with his brother's widow, Raine.

Ever since they were little, Jesse was the Edwards brother who was always there for her, and Jake was the one who knew just how to push her buttons. Raine can't imagine a life without them, which is why it was doubly decimating when Jake left town after his brother's sudden death. Now he's back and she doesn't know whether to be mad or thrilled. Maybe both. Or maybe it will be the perfect chance for both of them to finally find happiness again.

I really do like this series!
This is from my Audible Library.

Lieutenant Commander Matthew Reddy and the crew of the USS Walker find themselves caught between the nation they swore to defend and the allies they promised to protect. For even as the Allies and the Empire of New Britain Isles stand united against the attacks of both the savage Grik and the tenacious Japanese, the "Holy Dominion" - a warped mixture of human cultures whose lust for power overshadows even the Grik - is threatening to destroy them both with a devastating weapon neither can withstand.

I am enjoying adding stories from my own TBR. :-)

Sunday Words of Encouragment October 6, 2013

This morning our Pastor preached on a Psalm that is so wonderfully familiar to many of us --
Psalm 23, often referred to as the Shepherd's Psalm. The Shepherd is responsible to provide the appropriate pastures and water for sheep. Sheep will only drink from still water. They must lay down to rest and absorb their nutrients. What is the job or purpose of the sheep? They eat and drink, mature and bear young.

Pastor noted that this Psalm really is about Relationship. We should not see ourselves like “dumb” sheep. But we too are given life to eat, drink, mature and raise young. No matter how old you get you can still have, or mentor, spiritual offspring. Healthy offspring can only come from the protected relationship of the herd of sheep led by the wise hand of a shepherd. Pastor pointed out that relationship is like the herd of water buffalo at the Battle at Kruger. The herd stopped to protect and help the weak and injured calf.

Some animals have a relationship of convenience, like Pastor’s feral cat who hung around for food, water and shelter. But there was no intimacy, no touch, no commitment. When the cat decided to go off there was no way for Pastor to know where it went or to help it. This happens in churches too with people, like those who come in late, leave early and do not connect to others in the congregation.  Pastor proclaimed that ours is a Church of ‘restoration.’ We accept strays and hope that they will become connected; will find a relationship within the church, to be mentored as offspring to find a full relationship with God.

If we recall when we first got saved, or accepted Christ as our personal savior, we recall that everything in our live changed. Sometimes it came suddenly, other times more slowly, but always there was change. Usually there is a point where a new Christian is very excited to share what God has done for him/her.  Paul advised Timothy to “Stir up gift within you.” 2 Timothy 1:6. If we are alive in Christ, we should show it. We should not be like a “bump on a pickle.” We should not just sit and wait for our own death. Instead we should share and help others. We should show our excitement as one of those who is yearning for His appearing. Pastor referenced 2 Timothy 4:8 but I found all of chapter 4 is applicable to this message.

There are several versions of songs featuring Psalm 23.
I found this one to be inspirational!

A Verse for Today
Psalm 23:6  (NIV)
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Thank you Lord for all the blessings that you pour down on me as my Shepherd. Help me to be obedient to follow your direction: to eat and drink of the nutrients (physical and spiritual) that you provide, and to mentor spiritual offspring so they may have a relationship with you too.

Sharing Beyond Books #120 Comment Giveaway 10/5/13

Hello again on Saturday night and Welcome to SBB, Sharing Beyond Books.

Hey everyone! Are you getting ready to celebrate Halloween or anything special this month?
I am pleased to say that I feel much better. Thought I was having a relapse earlier in the week but now I feel good.

Twenty-one of us do not cover our books although several of us do have covers for our ereaders. Only two commenters actually use covers and Liss is thinking of doing it.

There were twelve definite "nos" to roller coasters. Five who love them and another five who like the rides but maybe haven't ridden in years.

Thank you to all who shared last week.
~~~~
The Winner from SBB #119 comments is: #14 Di who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the ARC/Review titles, Christmas titles or Love titles - all linked near the end of the post.  Please let me know your choice by completing the (new) WINNER FORM.
WEEK #120
Q1. Becky asks:  If you are in a bookstore, where do you go first??
A: Hmm... I don't go to bookstores very often but when I do I admit I hit the bargain table first. Then I might check out the gift section. And often I stop for a coffee and treat if available. :-)
Doesn't this look charming?
Image found at Bookstores of the World.
Q2. My nonbookish Question this week: Which would you 'prefer' to visit: Dentist or Doctor??
A: Well really I don't 'prefer' either. :-) I think maybe I would choose to go to the dentist because usually it is quick and painless. At least I haven't had a root canal for years. Besides I don't really go to the doctor unless I am sick or need the annual check up things and I don't look forward to the 'vice machine!' (That happens to be on my mind since it is Breast Cancer Awareness month.)
I had a guy like this - just once!
Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! We are getting low on questions so hopefully you will send more in -- even if they are duplicates I'll weed through or try to modify to use.
Your turn to share:
Q1. Becky asks:  If you are in a bookstore, where do you go first??
Q2.My non-bookish Question: Which would you 'prefer' to visit: Dentist or Doctor??
SBB Comment Winners can choose a selection from the Valentine and "Love" books , the Christmas Giveaway Books, or the June 2012 Newly Updated ARC/Review List.
SBB Rules:
a) Must be a follower.
b) Share a comment on either of the two questions above.
Open internationally and an international winner may get a smaller book or a $5.00 GC if I decide the mailing is too much.
I will pick a Comment winner from all comments made by Friday, October 11, 2013 at 10 PM central.
"Deftly blends elements of Steampunk and vampire romance with brilliantly successful results...darkly atmospheric and delectably sexy."—Booklist Starred Review for Kiss of Steel
In the mist-shrouded streets of a steam-fueled London, a clockwork army is on the rise, vampire blue bloods rule the streets, and war is brewing...
I Will Come For You...
He will find her no matter what. As a blue-blooded captain of the Nighthawk Guard, his senses are keener than most. Some think he's indestructible. But once he finds the elusive Mercury, what will he do with her?
It's his duty to turn her in—she's a notorious spy and traitor. But after one stolen moment, he can't forget the feel of her in his arms, the taste of her, or the sharp sting of betrayal as she slipped off into the night. Little does Mercury know, no one hunts better than the Nighthawk. And his greatest revenge will be to leave her begging for his touch...
Review:
Mercury is a leader of the humanist rebellion against the powerful, blood sucking Echelon. She was raised to be a spy and an assassin. When her brutal, blue-blood, father slaughtered her beloved husband in front of her she managed to escape his clutches, along with her brothers. Her older brother, Jack, is frail due to the experiments and tortures of their father. Her younger brother, Jeremy, had gotten into the wrong crowd of machinists and has been missing since Mercury foiled the machinists plan to bomb the Echelon leadership.
Mercury has her own mechanical arm that was cut off trying to free her husband. The arm was then replaced by expert biotechs engaged by her father. Although Mercury sympathizes with the machinists, she did not agree they were ready for the all out war that would follow a vicious attack against the Echelon. Still she continues with her plans to face the brutal Coldrush guards of the Echelon. But her activities are being investigated by Lynch, “The Nighthawk” himself, who is the head of the Nighthawks, the rogue, outcast blue-bloods who serve as spies and enforcers for the Echelon along with the guard.
Mercury is distracted from her own revenge efforts while seeking news of the whereabouts of Jeremy. Mercury goes undercover as Rosalind, an able and determined secretarial assistant.  She convinces Lynch to engage her and they begin a careful, but oh-so dangerous, dance. The more Rosalind gets to know Lynch the more she respects him, even knowing he is the enemy. She knows she shouldn’t grow close but this is the first time her senses have been stirred–even her heart– since her husband’s death.
Lynch feels a growing attraction for Rosalind but he is confused by his lustful reaction to the seductive play of Mercury. He is having a hard time keeping his usual cold, controlled demeanor while challenged by two attractive, but both unattainable, women.
Lynch is given an ultimatum by the Prince Consort: he has two weeks to bring in Mercury for execution or submit himself in her place. But how can he turn over a woman who makes him feel alive?
There is plenty of action in addition to the deceptive intrigue as Lynch and his team, with Rosalind in tow to take notes, investigate the sudden rampaging and killing of loved ones and households among several Echelon leaders.  The reader knows that Rosalind is going toeventually get caught and exposed as Mercury. The fun is getting there and learning how Lynch reacts!
I enjoy the steampunk elements in this series and the strong characters. I really loved the intrigue and sensual play throughout this book. It kept my attention riveted waiting to see the next step or play in the game.
Although I recommend this whole series I think this could be read as a stand alone and it is my favorite so far. I read two of the prior books and missed one. I think the background was sufficiently recounted to identify the players and how they got where they are. There are still characters who have stories waiting, and I am especially interested to learn what happens to Barrons and to the ongoing battle between humanists and the Echelon.
I received the ARC from Sourcebooks for an honest reviewing.
BookBlast Blog Tour Feature and Giveaway: Just Ella
Just Ella Tour
Just Ella by Annette K. Larsen
Just EllaBook Summary:
A Proper Romance
Ariella was only looking for a distraction, something to break up the monotony of palace life. What she found was a young man willing to overlook her title and show her a new and vibrant way of life. But when her growing feelings for Gavin spiral out of control and clash with the expectations of her station, she will discover that the consequences of her curiosity are far more severe than she’d imagined.
I watched in helpless horror as two guards hauled Gavin to his feet and dragged him from the room. My voice was frozen, unable to protest as another guard took hold of my arm, leading me upstairs. From the confines of my room, I stared into the darkness beyond my window, hoping to catch one more glimpse of Gavin. He was gone, and I wondered if he would have been better off if he had never met me.
I write clean romance. Why? Because that’s what I love to read, but over the years I’ve discovered it’s quite a challenge to find good clean romance. I believe it’s a genre that many people are looking for and too few authors are writing. My first novel, Just Ella, took me many years to write because I wanted it to be more than just a cutesy love story. I wanted it to have depth, to feel genuine. Hopefully I succeeded, but you’ll have to be the judge.
Praise for Just Ella
"I fell in love with this book. Treat yourself to something wonderful. You can't go wrong with Just Ella!" ~Inspired Kathy from I Am A Reader, Not A Writer
"By far one of the best romance novels I've ever read. Pulls you in with great, likable characters and keeps you going with a sweet and exciting love story--plus a good plot to give it even more substance. Full of those tender moments you want to go back and read again, plus exciting moments, clever humor, and some suspense as well." ~Jana Miller
"Annette Larsen writes a love story that takes time, is complicated, and yet still sweeps you up in the romance (without the cheese, thank you). It's compelling and emotional and sweet and you will love every page." ~Kimi
Excerpt
“Now, wait just a minute. You can’t just plunge into a pool of water.”
“Why not?” I should have said something cleverer, but I felt a bit scatterbrained, all thoughts having fled when Gavin’s arm went around me.
He made a noise of exasperation. “Why not, she asks. Because, Princess, what’s going to happen when you show up for your lessons completely drenched? Or, what happens when we both show up on the palace grounds completely drenched? I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have to explain that to anybody.”
Unfortunately, he had a point. “Don’t call me Princess.” He had been so relaxed today, so willing to be himself and let me be myself. I hated that he felt the need to remind me of my rank. I was tempted to be angry and walk away but I also wanted to see how long he would keep his arms around me. Simply out of curiosity, of course.
I have Charlotte Bronte to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to sacrifice what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but it the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it.
I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.
Saturday Snapshot October 5, 2013 Bahamas Cruising - Parade of Animals
As noted last week, the last day, Cruise Day 5, was at day at sea. I mentioned that we went out on deck early and my DH's first few shots were all fuzzy - but below the fuzzy is what he was taking pictures of!
Fogged over:
Becky was partially correct when she said it was the ship pool.
The fun part was the parade of towel animals around the pool deck!
 Note the paired swans to the left below. :-)
These were great fun to look at and I was surprised by all the variety!
We of course had the usual offerings in our stateroom each night too. :-)
Thanks to all who stop by and visit. I didn't get to visit until the end of last week. Wonder when I will this week?
A big Thank You to Alyce of At Home With Books who has hosted this meme for a number of years. She is taking a summer hiatus at her blog and the new host will be Melissa at West Metro Mommy. Thank you to Melissa for picking up the responsibility.
2/19/11 Book Group #18- Pairs!---(All gone).
I have finally updated the intro and Entry paragraphs here:
If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.
I started Friday Pick in November 27, 2009 and in three years I have posted 33 groups of 16 (528) books to find new homes! (as of November 2012)
I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want! I am happy to say that so far about 572+ books (I forgot to update this number for a month) have found new homes! YAY. I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed.
Note rules here regarding international entries.
Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.
I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $5.00 $7.00 and $6.00 $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)
TO ENTER:
Leave a comment and tell me WHICH BOOK you would like to get from the Friday Pick lists.
CUT OFF TIME IS THURSDAY NIGHTS AT 10:00 PM CENTRAL so I do not have to stay up past midnight to do the winner post!
I will randomly pick two winners to announce Friday mornings with the next Pick post.
Automatic wins are those who requested the book four times and I did not note other people asking for that book during those weeks.
WINNERS PLEASE CHECK THE WIN POST ON FRIDAYS AND fill in the Winner's Acceptance Form or email me at mesreads@gmail.com. [I will confirm receipt of the addresses- well I realize I haven't always done this. But if you filled out the form and don't get the book within two weeks nudge me with an email please!] If I have the winners e-mail I will send a reminder in a week or so....
Thanks for helping these books find new homes!!
Repeating this helpful blog tip: You can right click on a link and you will be given the choice to open the link in a new window or tab so you do not navigate away from the screen you are on!! I use this all the time!
Book Description
Something terrible happened in Pine Creek.
Eve Taylor must return home for her grandmother’s funeral but has every intention of making it a short visit. Too many memories live in the small town where she grew up, memories of a Halloween best forgotten.
Trey Rainwater has been waiting for Eve. He knows she’ll be staying for longer than she’d planned and has every intention of making sure she does. He has a promise to keep.
Eve and Trey find themselves thrown into a deadly combination of riddles, murder, and a love that won’t be denied. As the moon hovers in the October sky and Halloween grows closer, Eve must fight her own personal demons while learning to trust the man who protects her.
The past has come back to life, and a killer is stalking the small town of Pine Creek. He’s waiting for his Hallowed Eve.
Review:
Eve had a traumatic experience as a child that has left her frightened of basements and reluctant to join in Halloween events. Because of the terrible association she has stayed away from her childhood home for years. She has returned to town for a short visit upon the death of her grandmother only to learn that to inherit her grandmother’s home she must live there for a year. She realizes that she cannot let the property pass from her family so she determines to stay and begin a catering business from the house.
Eve is surprised and pleased to meet her new neighbor, a very handsome and fit young man, Trey. He quickly becomes a friend she can rely on as he commits to keeping her safe. But Eve doesn’t know that Trey has made a promise to watch over her.
As soon as Eve begins to settle in she begins to get letters with cryptic poems and riddles. At first she hopes they are for someone else but soon she accepts that they are for her and to her dismay she and Trey realize that they are connected to murders that are taking place. But the killer is obsessed with the one who got away - Eve. Eve has to face her greatest nightmares while Trey tries to protect her from the stalking killer of her past and now present.
I was quickly absorbed by the clear, crisp writing and the mystery of the story. Although we know that Eve suffered a terrible trauma as a child, Ms. Kates pulls the reader along in the suspense as the full nature of the attack is not revealed until well into the book.  Trey is a wonderful hero and the attraction and growing relationship between them is very nicely handled - very sensual without being too graphic. There are  secrets, honesty and trust issues that create good conflict and tension along with the danger that stalks Eve. I really appreciated how Eve finally decided to claim her life by throwing her own Halloween party.
The cover looks spooky and although there is a horrible killer, this is not horror. The action and pacing are good. The characters are strong and likeable and the suspense carries through to the end. I highly recommend this to readers who like good romantic suspense and mystery thrillers.
I received this eBook from the author for an honest review and to participate in a blog tour promoting her upcoming release.
Publisher's Summary
Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper Extraordinaire, is back in this sexy, suspenseful novel of supernatural shenanigans.
When Charley is rudely awakened in the middle of the night by her best friend who tells her to get dressed quickly and tosses clothes out of the closet at her, she can’t help but wonder what Cookie’s up to. Leather scrunch boots with a floral miniskirt? Together? Seriously?
Cookie explains that a friend of hers named Mimi disappeared five days earlier and that she just got a text from her setting up a meet at a coffee shop downtown. They show up at the coffee shop, but no Mimi. But Charley finds a message on the bathroom wall. Mimi left a clue, a woman’s name. Mimi’s husband explains that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old friend of hers from high school had been found murdered a couple weeks prior. The same woman Mimi had named in her message.
Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally) has left his corporeal body and is haunting Charley. He’s left his body because he’s being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can’t let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they’ll have a portal to heaven. And if they have a portal to heaven… well, let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty. Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Will Cookie ever get a true fashion sense? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel them as they do?
Here is your signpost for the most hilarious listen of the summer: Second Grave on the Left.
Review:
Charley is once again addressing two mysteries in this second book.  One mystery involves the disappearance of one of Cookie’s good friends, Mimi. It appears that Mimi was acting strangely before disappearing and now the investigation reveals that many of her high school friends have recently died. Charley and Cookie are in a desperate race to find Mimi before she turns up dead too.
However, Charley is also caught up in trying to save her dream lover, Reyes, aka the Son of Satan. We learn much more about Reyes, his history and connections to Charley. All of her life Reyes has secretly been protecting her through an astral connection. But now he is in danger of leading demons to find Charley which would be a very bad thing, allowing them to use her as a portal to heaven. Charley found Reyes in prison, actually in a hospital in a coma, but now he has escaped and gone into hiding. Charley is intent on finding Reyes before he allows his corporeal body to die while he continues to hide from her in an effort to keep her safe.
The conflict between Charley and Reyes creates great tension. Also, Charley is learning that she has more powers than even she realizes and she is beginning to let her family in on some of her secrets with some heartbreaking and encouraging moments. If you enjoy sass, humor and romantic conflict I highly recommend this series.
Audio Notes: Again, Ms. King does a great job of narrating and making the characters come more alive than a print book might. This listen moved quickly and I am ready to purchase book three from Audible!
Publisher's Summary
A smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light”. But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice.
Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life... and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.
This is a thrilling debut novel from an exciting newcomer to the world of paranormal romantic suspense. The audio includes a sneak peak of Second Grave on the Left.
Keep chilled: spend some more time with Charley Davidson.
Review:
Charley Davidson has known for a long time that she was different from most folks. As a child she didn’t understand but over the years she learned to hide her abilities -- she sees dead people. Not only does she see them but she apparently is THE Grim Reaper and she helps people pass through into "the light." Sometimes the dead want Charley to help them with unresolved issues before they will move along. That is how she became invovled in fighting the bad guys and solving murders.
Charley has worked as a Private Investigator helping the Albuquerque police, first her father, who has retired, and now Uncle Bob. No one, not even her family, really know the extent of her secrets. They just know that somehow she gets the right clues to solve the cases. Additionally, they have observed that, although sometimes clumsy, Charley always seems to manage to “dodge the bullet” so to speak. Actually, when she has been really in danger the bad guys seem to end up with very severe injuries, like broken spinal columns.
Charley struggles with being ‘a freak’ especially as she is scorned by her step mother and seems to have lost the friendship of her beautiful, talented sister. And of course having a normal dating life is pretty much out of the question. Lately though Charley has had a great night life- even if it is just in her dreams. She doesn’t know who her secret, sexy dream lover is, or quite ‘what’ he is and that begins to concern her when he starts appearing during her working hours too.
This first book of the series introduces Charley, her family, her work nemesis, Garrett, her assistant/best friend/neighbor, Cookie, and several other secondary characters. The reader also begins to experience Charley’s rather crazy world and life. It seems each of the books has Charley involved in helping a couple of cases. In this story she has arranged an escape for an abused wife and she is pulled in to help solve a killing of three local attorneys, who are conveniently providing her mixed messages.
There is great action, mystery, tension and humor in these stories! I love Charley’s sass and determination. Initially it isn’t clear if her dream lover, Reyes, is a good guy or not, but it is clear he has a protective streak and strong attraction for Charley. I also enjoyed Charley’s struggles as she slowly begins to reveal more of herself to her circle of family and friends. The plot is full and fast paced and I was eager to get and listen to the second book in the series.
Audio Notes: Lorelei King does a wonderful job carrying the craziness of Charley’s life and her somewhat vulnerable but irrepressible personality. Ms. King does a good job with the other characters and portraying the emotions as the story moves along. The narration definitely added to my enjoyment of this title.
I read this from my own Audible library.
Book Description
Publication Date: June 30, 2012
A single gunshot shattered Dana's perfect life. Now she's starting over with a new life, new rules and an old flame to chase all her demons away. But Dana’s demons have other ideas. They want her—and her sisters—at any cost.
Fans of Dean Koontz will delight in Deleyna Marr’s first novel which takes the reader on an around the world adventure filled with industrial espionage, human trafficking and three very powerful sisters.
Marie works for SciTech, an international mega corporation that battles terrorists and industrial espionage. She loves the risk and adventure, the private jet, and the whirlwind her life has become. At least she did, until someone decides the world would be much better off without her.
Lara hides behind a smoke screen of witchcraft to disguise the strength of her enhanced psychic abilities. Working with the man who once tortured her to develop those abilities, she is developing the next generation of psionics, and keeping a close eye on her sisters.
Dana lives a seemingly quiet life, protected from outside stress, until an assassination attempt on Marie triggers her dormant psionic abilities. Now she'll have to escape her marriage and find her sisters in order to unravel the mystery of the corporation that claims to own them.
Kevin has finally escaped SciTech’s control and there is nothing that would make him return to that nightmare. Nothing except his love for the woman who was created to be his soul mate.
Review:
This story follows three young women who have extraordinary powers - not quite psychic but enhanced senses. They are known as psionics and knew each other in college where they were able to connect through telepathy. They also knew two young men, Leonard and Kevin, who seemed connected with similar, but not as powerful senses. In college Leonard tortured Lara trying to force the improvement of her sensory skills. Kevin stepped in to protect Lara, destroying Leonard’s senses and creating a bitter enemy. Kevin was growing close to Dana but those who secretly manipulated the girls wanted them separated.
Dana was wooed away by a man whom she believed “got” her and accepted her. It took years of betrayal, infidelity and mental abuse for her to realize that he was not the man she thought he was. Even then she didn’t realize the full extent of his manipulations until she broke free of the drug haze he kept her in and escaped to find her friend Marie.
Marie went to work for the company SciTech which uses her skills to help fight criminal activity. Recently Dana sensed that Marie was in danger so Dana escapes her home and flies to Paris to find Marie. Marie wants to convince Dana to come to work with her at SciTech, under the big boss, Thomas.
Dana is shocked to discover that Kevin is alive as she thought he had died. The more she learns of the manipulations that directed her live since college the more betrayal and anger she experiences. Dana and Marie face danger as someone seeks to kidnap them to experiment further with their powers. Although Kevin swore he would never work for SciTech again he is committed to protecting the girls. That includes trying to rescue Lara from her situation.
Marie, Dana and Kevin are sent on assignment to use their skills to locate pockets of humans held by a slave trafficking ring. The undercover efforts are almost discovered but they still help the authorities to save many lives and round up some of the criminal leaders.
Finally a confrontation brings all three women together as they learn more of their twisted past. As their powers increase they are exposed to a shadowy world of grigori, fallen angels, many of whom are demon-like creatures who relish pain and occasionally a few gentler ones who give comfort.
I really liked the psionic personalities and loved the protective nature of Kevin. It was good to watch Dana recover her strengths after being pushed down by her husband. I found the story premise interesting and enjoyed the action. I also liked the efforts against the sex trafficking which I find to be an important and timely subject. Unfortunately, the story had a little bit of a choppy, disfointed flow for me and I was left with a feeling that some facts were unclear. Still the overall effect was really engaging and I do recommend this to those who like romantic suspense with paranormal elements.
This is another book I received from Heart Ally Books at EPICon 2013 in March.
