Sunday Post September 19, 2021/It's Monday! What are You Reading? Plus Mailbox Monday September 20 2021

Sunday Post #318 Chairs, Compliance, and Storms

I am linking with Sunday Post at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? now at The Book Date (at Wordpress)
What Are You Reading? is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I didn't have the best of weeks. I had a different staff member out sick on Monday (migraine), Wednesday (bad tummy bug) and Friday (tummy bug).  I haven't felt super myself but I did not get sick like the girls.

I took this picture one evening two weeks ago as I was leaving my (still temporary) office.
I look at it as a promise that God has things under control.

We are still having half sunny and half raining days. We had a couple of hot days this week too. I am ready for fall.

I enjoyed my reading last week, finishing two audiobooks and an ebook. I posted three reviews and my usual memes.

I visited only 15 blogs last week.
Shout Out this week to CINDY'S BOOK CORNER. Cindy's blog tag is: "Serious book addict reviewing clean reads across multiple genres."

Audible offerings for free children's titles ended June 30.
Audiobooks.com is still sharing some free listens for children.

These were last week's posts:
  • ATBR- Audio Book Review: A Worthy Pursuit by Karen Witemeyer; Genre: Historical Romance, Inspirational, Romance; My Rating: 4.5 of 5.0 Overall; Content 4.5; Narration 4.5.
  • ATBR- Audible Book Review: Who in the World is Carmen Sandiego by Rebecca Tinker; Genre: Children's Audiobooks, Literature & Fiction; My Rating: 4.25 of 5.0 Overall; Content 4.25; Narration 4.25.
  • NGA2021- #NetGalley Audio Book Review: Striking Range (Timber Creek K-9 Mystery #7) by Margaret Mizushima; Genre: Crime Thriller, Mystery, Police Procedures, Women Sleuths; My Rating: 4.25 of 5.0 Overall; Content 4.25; Narration 4.0.

Publisher's Summary
An American heiress nobody wants; a duke every woman desires; and a murder no one expects.
As a young duke, all Nathaniel wants is to be left alone. So when he meets Charlotte, an outspoken American heiress, he is suspicious of her indifference. Too many women have sought - and failed - to catch him.
However, Charlotte is unimpressed by his title. She has no interest in English dukes. All she wants is to leave dreary England and travel to the sunny sands of Egypt to see the grand pyramids.
Unfortunately, a debutante seeking to entrap Nathaniel gets murdered, and his reputation as a confirmed misogynist makes him a suspect. On impulse, Charlotte comes to his aid, unaware that her actions place her in danger, too.
Neither Charlotte nor the duke know that a highwayman interested in rich heiresses is following Charlotte, and that another debutante lies dead in Nathaniel's carriage. And unfortunately, the evidence soon complicates Nathaniel's efforts to prove his innocence and convince Charlotte that he is worthy of her love.
Some nights just don't go as planned.

Publisher's Summary
Eight-grader Penny Preston thought she knew how to handle the Bodach, the spirits from the fifth dimension. But suddenly something is attacking the structure of the multiverse. Left unchecked, the attack will tear the fabric separating the dimensions and destroy the universe in a cataclysmic cosmic crunch. As the stress on the fabric grows, higher-dimensional energy escapes into Piper Falls, NY, reenergizing the Bodach. Emboldened, they use their regained powers to wreak havoc on the small town. The extra energy draws several new higher-dimensional entities to Piper Falls. One of them, a former Bodach commander, seeks to rally her followers and avenge her defeat at the hands of King Arthur more than 1,600 years ago by reestablishing her rule. The energy also attracts an especially destructive ethereal Celtic spirit, which has a special taste for ancient artifacts and exotic nuclear particles. The last of the new arrivals is a mysterious and conflicted shape-shifter a spy known as Newiddyn.
The interactions of the newcomers and their empowered brethren with the town's residents results in chaos and brings paranormal researcher Darin Kolchak back to town. Teamed with the deputy sheriff, their high technology investigation leads them to the local lab conducting state of the art nuclear fusion experiments. The same lab where Penny's parents work. Penny and her friends must again dodge detection, as they sort out the capabilities and intentions of these powerful entities. One bad choice or wrong step risks unleashing the apocalypse of the Darkest Day.

Palm Lines
by Jonathan Koven
I am looking forward to enjoying this debut Poetry Collection.
Source: 7/14/2021 I accepted an Author request to read and review.

These heartfelt poems speak to a transformative journey "to rediscover love as both a question and an answer." Seeking hope, honoring family, finding love, accepting time's passage, and understanding gratitude are all major themes explored in this dreamlike collection.

I expect to get to another audio but I haven't decided which - again.

September 19, 2021 - I am on track. I love seeing new things each time I read the Bible. I am glad to still be current with morning reading. I am reading/listening to the NLT Tyndale version of the Bible on You Version App so Hubby and I are reading the same passages each day.
I have started a 3 day devotional titled "Living An Authentic Christian Life".

I completed three books to review this week.
NetGalley shelf is now at 1 new audio, 1 new children's title and 3 old ebooks titles.
I have three author titles remaining in queue. I've been working on reading these.
(Plus a few that I received from facebook links and newsletter sign-ups, not specific review requests.)
Still many titles through InstaFreebie and many new author requests I haven't replied to.

Welcome to Mailbox Monday.

Mailbox Monday is a gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week and explore great book blogs. This Meme started with Marcia at A Girl and Her Books (fka The Printed Page) and after a tour of hosts has returned to its permanent home at Mailbox Monday. Thanks to the ladies sharing hosting duties: Serena of Savvy Verse & Wit, me and new to the team, Velvet at vvb32reads. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

I selected one NetGalley children's title this week.
I have an ebook from an author I forgot to list two weeks ago.
I selected the 2nd August Audible credit.
I resisted other audios this week.
Seven free Kindle titles this week.

(Note these are in my Amazon library, NOT on my Kindle until I download and transfer them.)
Are your mailbox and TBR piles blooming?

Sunday Words of Encouragement September 19, 2021

Pastor advised that our donations for Fire Bibles this month would be to provide Bibles for Sri Lanka and Haiti. Pastor then continued his sermon series: "Walking with Jesus”.

When we accept God’s invitation to walk with Him, we have accepted His call to fulfill His Purpose. It is not as a part time, ‘in spare time’ thing. This must be a committed priority.
Pastor reiterated last week’s scripture passage Colossians 2:6-7, which tells us to be rooted in Christ.

God calls each person. We are
Called to salvation. Repent and be saved.
Called to follow. Trust God to lead.
Called to fulfill His purpose. This is our reason for being, living.

There came a time when Jesus began to preach “Repent of your sins, turn to God…” Matthew 4:16-17.
Jesus called Levi a tax collector to follow him. It would require a change of lifestyle for Levi to follow – from a probably prosperous position in the community to a less approved. But the religious leaders considered the tax collectors and other sinners as “scum”. Jesus’ response was: “I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” Mark 2:17.

Jesus called his apostles. First, Simon (Peter) and Andrew, were called to become fishers of men. They left their nets to follow Jesus. So too, James and John, left their nets, their boat and their father behind. Matthew 4: 18-22.
They had to sacrifice their current lifestyles.
His disciples (then and now) follow at different levels of closeness.

His purpose is to be the follower’s whole purpose. What was Jesus’ purpose?
Jesus declared himself the Good Shepherd. John 10:11-16. The Good Shepherd leads his sheep and expects them to follow. He protects them. Feeds them. Leads them to green pasture.
The Good Shepherd had to sacrifice – He laid down His life for His sheep. I have come so they (my sheep) may have life and have it to the full. John 10:7-10.

A full life needs to be connected to the other side of heaven rather than ‘prosperity preaching.’
He did not come so we could have a good life on earth, but in heaven. Eternal life is our full life.

If our purpose becomes His purpose, then we are here to make sure others can have life to the full too. How well are we fulfilling His purpose?
If we are disciples, are we active disciples?
Our purpose needs to be married to God’s purpose.
Have we been seeking life on the wrong side of heaven or are we actively moving others to repent and become followers?
Maybe we need to renew our ‘marriage’ to God’s purpose.
Maybe we need to get off the inactive list and get active in fulfilling God’s purpose.
The church should be following actively.

I think this video is good for today: My Soul Follows After You.
Verses for Today:
John 10:7-10 NIV
7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

God, help me to renew my commitment and action to Your Purpose.

Sharing Beyond Books #430 Comment Giveaway September 18, 2021

Hello again, Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books.
Another two weeks flying by. It is starting to get darker as I leave the office (6:30pm)

Thanks to everyone who commented on the last question.
Last post SBB#429 Rubynreba asked: Did you watch the Summer Olympics? If so, what was your favorite event??
I found it interesting that 7 commenters didn't really watch (although two checked medal ratings) and 7 did. For those watching, 2 watched lots, and favs mentioned included: 4 mentioned gymnastics, 3 mentioned volleyball, 1 watched hockey. Also mentioned were diving, track and field, bmx, basketball, climbing, rowing, and archery.

For US participants: I need to update and refill the books available to US winners. I have used "Love" and "Christmas" titles as well as ARC titles. Since the supply is lower, I have author collections I could choose from, mostly romance - historical, suspense and some contemporary. What genres/books/authors would you like me to include?

The Winner from SBB#429 comments is #3 BN100 who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the Updated (**Finally!) ARC/Review titles or (recently updated) Love and Christmas titles - all linked near the end of the post. -- [9-18-2021 I have added a new box and crossed off books no longer available through August 2021.]

Please let me know your choice by completing the WINNER FORM.
WEEK #430
(One Question.)
Marjorie asks: What is your favourite place to visit on vacations?? (Expanded by my answer.)
Actually Elizabeth asked this question back in 2013 (SBB#99). So I thought I'd use it again to see if anyone has a) changed their answer or b) if vacations have been different due to Covid19 restrictions or c) anyone has a Dream Vacay they's like to share.
I would like to get a true vacation soon. We still love cruising and that is what hubby picks although I'm not sure if he would really go since he rarely goes out anymore. He is on oxygen full time now but could carry his portables for a trip.
More realistically we'd like to travel before year end to see our son and his family in Illinois.

Best places to visit in the world
Image found at Travel US News.

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month, I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a 1/2 book choice or $2.50 towards GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! The supply of questions is dwindling so share some if you think of any -- even if they are duplicates I'll weed through or try to modify them.
September questions were provided by Rubynreba and Marjorie.

Your turn to share. Marjorie asks: What is your favourite place to visit on vacations??

SBB Comment Winners can choose a selection from the Updated ARC and Other books, including the "Love" and Christmas titles all in one post.

SBB Rules:
a) Must be a follower.
b) Share a comment on the question above.
Open internationally and an international winner may get a smaller book or a $5.00 GC if I decide the mailing is too much.
I will pick a Comment winner from all comments made through Saturday, October 2, 2021, at 5 PM central.

#NetGalley Audio Book Review: Striking Range (Timber Creek K-9 Mystery #7) by Margaret Mizushima

This is an entertaining mystery in a good series.

Series: A Timber Creek K-9 Mystery, Book 7

Release date: 09-07-21

He was suspect number one - the man who tried to kill Deputy Mattie Cobb and may have killed her father 30 years earlier. But when Mattie and cold-case Detective Jim Hauck reach the Colorado state prison where they will finally get to interview him, he's found dead in his cell. There's only one clue: a map leading to Timber Creek and rugged Redstone Ridge.
Following the clue, Mattie and her K-9 partner, Robo, journey into the burned forest surrounding Redstone Ridge. But before they can finish their search, they're called to help investigate the death of a young woman found in a campground filled with elk hunters. Identification of the deceased points to her having recently given birth, but the infant is nowhere to be found.
As a deadly storm descends upon the mountains, covering everything with a layer of ice and snow, Mattie and her team search for the missing newborn. The storm batters the area, taking its toll on the team and forcing the sheriff to call in reinforcements. When new evidence surfaces, they decide that finding the woman's killer will lead them to her baby, making them even more desperate to solve the case.
Then veterinarian Cole Walker goes missing, stranded alone in the high country with a person that Mattie now suspects is the mastermind behind several murders, including her father's. She and Robo take to the trail to find Cole - but the killer has a cold-blooded plan that threatens them all.

Review:
Deputy Mattie Cobb escaped from a man who tried to kill her and she thinks he is the man who killed her father 30 years ago. Maddie has teamed with cold-case Detective, Jim Hauck, to interview the man in prison. As they are waiting for the interview, the prison goes on lockdown and they soon learn that the man has been found dead in his cell. Upon viewing the body and inspecting the man’s belongings, Maddie finds clues that direct her back to her own community in Timber Creek.

Mattie and her K-9 partner, Robo, find suspicious sites in the mountain forest and caves. Before they can dig out the sites, Mattie and Robo are called in to investigate a missing young pregnant girl. They find the girl dead and no longer pregnant. Now they are looking for the baby.

Maddie’s beau, veterinarian Cole Walker, and other K-9 units are called in to help with the search on the mountain before a deadly storm wipes out more evidence. There are several suspects to interview and watch as the situation intensifies. Meanwhile, a local officer is found injured on the side of the road.

As Maddie pursues the missing baby she and another officer stumble upon a crucial bit of evidence. Now Maddie has to worry about Cole and the other officers left on the mountain with a man that might be involved with the killings.

This moved very quickly, and I enjoyed the multiple crisscrossing investigations. Ms. Mizushima creates life-like characters with real-life personal problems to deal with as they juggle their official duties. The story involves timely criminal issues including drugs and child trafficking. There are several suspects and clues to keep the reader eager to find the true villains. And of course, I like the K-9 dog elements which describe differences between the different search and cadaver dogs.

I liked the first book in this series and have more to listen to. I read this one out of order which was okay although I would suggest reading at least the first book so that you know the characters. I recommend this to mystery and K-9 fans.

Audio Notes: I guess I am not a huge fan of Nancy Wu’s narration. She supplies some voices but they are not totally distinct. For me there is more breathy reading than voice and emotional performance. Still, the audio moves quickly for me and I am thankful to have snagged this audio from NetGalley.

I am happy to say that so far about 1,372 books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A year or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Note rules here regarding international entries.
Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, TWRP, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors, your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to faraway places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

Repeating this helpful blog tip: You can right click on a link and you will be given the choice to open the link in a new window or tab so you do not navigate away from the screen you are on!! I use this all the time!
