It's Monday! What Are You Reading now at The Book Date (at Wordpress)?

What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I had a busy week covering closings for my daughter as she was out with an infection.
I have two large commercial closings this week so I will be concentrating on these.

The new contractor confirmed that they are waiting for an inspection by the insurance company. Below are pictures of the office ready to be rebuilt.

We are looking for confirmation to replace all of these ceiling beams which suffered water damage.

We have decided to keep this left lobby wall as brick. They will remove more plaster up to the ceiling level and then clean the underlying brick.

This is looking from the lobby to the back of the office. They had to add pillars for support on the right until they add the new steel supports.
We plan to do a curved reception desk along the right wall.

Our weather is still hot and wet. It looks like we will have some rain from Marco this week. We are praying both storms dissipate rather than hit anywhere as hurricanes.
We are praying too for California and the devastating fires there. :-(

I enjoyed the books I read/listened to this week. My old kindle remains frozen. I was able to continue reading on my Fire Kindle although it is frustrating since it takes 3-4 minutes just to get the unit on, open the book, and find the correct chapter.  I finished two audios and one ebook. It was a light posting week with only one review and my usual memes.

August 23, 2020 - I remain caught up on daily reading. I need to be in the word every day. I am again enjoying the devotions and readings with the One Year Bible plan through You Version App. I considered changing but this is the reading group that is closest to my husband's reading so we can sometimes discuss the same passages.
I haven't picked a new study yet.

I completed three books and posted one review, remaining up to date.
My NetGalley shelf is at 2, plus the four titles from 2012-13 which I still hope to read this year.
I'm resisting adding any more NetGalley titles until I get some of my review titles done. I still have one carry over author ebook left. I have two audiobooks from authors. I feel good getting caught up on these books.
Still many titles through InstaFreebie and many new author requests I haven't replied to.

Sunday Words of Encouragement August 23, 2020

We attended church online again this morning. Pastor started a new series titled God Promises.
We are used to human promises where the promise might or might not be done. That is not true of God’s promises. God's promises have everything to do with His character. We can take God at His word.

The best promise is God’s promise of eternal life. John 3:16. In light of His promise of eternal life we have something to live for. Romans 6:3.
There is also a promise of eternal death if you reject Christ. Matthew 25:31-33. First, we believe that eternity exists. Then it follows that we have a hope greater than today! And we live our lives differently.

The Point: The God promise of eternal life gives us something greater to live for.

We know that without the peace of God’s promises, fear is crouching at the door. Genesis 4:6-7.
200,000 Christians die for their faith every year. Little children refuse to deny Christ. What gives them this strength? The promises of God.

People may say "Tomorrow we'll go here or there" but how do you know what God has planned? James 4:13-16.

The God promise should change our life priorities. Are we being stewards of our lives for God's glory? Are we preparing ourselves and those around us for eternity? 1 Corinthians 15:51-57.  Are we sharing God’s promise with others? Can we sit by idly while the world dies?

Keep God’s promise in the forefront of your life!
God has warned of judgment and punishment. He doesn't want any to suffer. Will you stand firm and be immovable in His promises? 1 Corinthians 15:58.

I was led to this song for today.

It is awesome to see such a family of young people singing God’s promises!

Nikki asks: Are you a list-maker? Do you use post-its/paper/handphone??

[Sorry - I think I got carried away on this answer!!]

I do like checklists and excel spreadsheets, particularly for work. I have created checklists to help all of us cover all tasks needed for each real estate closing. I have created checklists to help my assistant when handling law files.

Every six months or so I do an updated excel "To Do Task List" for my open law cases and probates. I probably should do a daily or at least weekly list - but I don't. I no longer use post-it notes for file communication. Instead, I start with a blank page on the outside of the file and we date notes to keep track of actions needed and done.

On a not so 'business' front I keep several list of books - one per year 2015 to 2020 for audios purchased plus one for audios under 10 hours; a current year list for NetGalley and for Alphabet; an current year excel list for monthly reading; and a current tracking list of monthly postings.

I also keep a very detailed excel spreadsheet for stock transactions. (I think I will need this for taxes.) This is helping me see which trades work better and which have larger losses. I am still learning and this has been helpful

For home we have created lists for travel needs: camper, cruise or just car travel. There is also a list for our daughter on how to handle utilities if she is staying in our home or borrowing the RV.

I don't generally keep a list of goals although I know that is highly recommended. It has just never been something I did.

I do use post-it notes to remind me of things to take home or to pick up at the store! I rarely use a phone list except for my prayer lists.

My assistant has strips of notes taped to her desk and occasionally uses post-it notes around her computer. We know one administrator whose computer is covered with post-it notes!

Suddenly all alone in 1894 Kansas, Summer Steadman can't find the employment she needs to settle near the fresh graves of her husband and four children. Bitter against the Lord and refusing to eat, she collapses in despair. Remembering his own painful loss, godly widower Peter Ollenbuger offers her food and shelter for tutoring his 10-year-old son.

Review:
Summer convinced her Boston husband to leave the comforts of home and travel west to make a new home for their family. Sadly, her husband and children caught typhoid and died outside a small German, Mennonite community in Kansas. Stranded with nothing, mired in grief and having dismissed God after he failed to grant her prays for healing, Summer feels she has nothing to live for.

Widower Peter lives with his elderly mother-in-law and his son, Thomas, who is currently house bound due to injuries. Peter and Summer reach an agreement that she will tutor Thomas in exchange for food and shelter in the small shack on his farm. Others in the community are fearful of Summer as ‘not one of their kind’ and begin to make trouble for Peter and Summer. After a blizzard destroys the shack and Summer moves into the house, the rumors and resentment increase.

Summer is a sad woman but a dedicated teacher. Thomas appreciates her efforts and slowly, between Thomas’ joy in learning and Peter’s patience, caring, and steadfast faith in God, Summer begins to believe that perhaps there is a future for her after all. Just as plans for her to settle in the community are coming together, Summer gets a letter that changes her plans.

Thomas is devastated to lose a woman he views as a mother and, only when she is leaving does Peter realize how important Summer has become to him and his family. Summer too realizes that she is leaving behind something precious, but she is now listening to God and feels she must follow as he leads. What is God’s plan for all of them?

I thoroughly enjoyed this faith-filled story with the double meaning of Summer’s return. Peter’s character is wonderfully developed as a simple man with practical talents and deep-rooted faith. Thomas is a good character and even the non-English speaking grandmother has an interesting role. I enjoyed learning the fascinating tidbits of the Mennonite Community and early grist mills.

Although the community is faith-based, the author shows how small-minded people can cause hurt even in such a community. We all know that Christians are flawed and fail to live up to the teachings of Christ in one way or another. On the other side of that lesson, the author shows how true faith and love of God can spread from one faithful follower to another.

I am sure I have read and enjoyed this author before but it has been a number of years. I won't wait so long for the next book by Ms. Sawyer. I recommend this sweet story to readers who enjoy historical, Christian romance.

Audio Notes: Barbara Caruso does a great job with the narration. She captures the emotional tones of the characters as well as delivering the accents and German phrasings. The narration enhanced my enjoyment of the story. I am surprised that I didn't see I had come across Ms. Caruso as a narrator in all my readings but I would be glad to listen to more that she narrates.

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost NINE years I have posted 88 groups of 16 plus an additional 21 totaling 1,429 books to find new homes! (as of November 8, 2019).

I am happy to say that so far about 1,326+ books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A year or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors, your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to faraway places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)
