Review:
Lily, a sixteen year old, lives in a secluded village with her Uncle, Sam, and her younger brother, Zephron, in a post-apocalyptic world. The children were genetically enhanced and keep their special abilities secret because otherwise they would be pulled in, studied and used by The Industry. Lily has special skills as a healer but her brother’s powers lean toward violent outbreaks. Their Uncle is a creative engineering and mechanical whiz with skills to create camouflage and provide means of survival.

Lily has encountered a stranger heading toward her home and in an effort to evade him there is an accident that leaves her more frightened than ever. Shortly thereafter Lily finds a young man, Will, looking wild and starved, in one of her brother’s traps. Although she knows she should not allow any stranger near their home she feels that she must help him.

Will is a seventeen year old who is traveling to find his father who he believes has gone to the city. His father has a family connection with the government but doesn’t agree with the policies so he may be laying low to avoid being brought in. Will stays with Lily’s family for a few days while they prepare a caravan trip to the city to trade for supplies and the special medicine that Lily’s Uncle needs for his cancer.

Although the trading seems to go well there is danger following Lily and Will. Lily gets in trouble when she meets with the doctor who is supposed to provide the medicine. Lily flees and tries to follow Will only to discover more trouble and danger when she has to rescue him from the authorities who are actually seeking her.

The characters are likeable and pretty natural in their circumstances. I enjoyed the developing friendship between Lily and Will even though it is clear that they are both hiding secrets. That is part of the intrigue to the story as the author weaves in the past history to reveal their secrets. There are some points that didn’t quite seem realistic ... that is to say the actions and events were contrived. Yet the story was engaging. It flowed well and read quickly. I would be interested to follow the continuing adventures.

I have finally updated the intro and Entry paragraphs here:

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in four years I have posted 43 groups of 16 (688) books to find new homes! (as of November 2013).

I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want! I am happy to say that so far about 598+ books have found new homes! YAY. I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed.

Note rules here regarding international entries.

Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $5.00 $7.00 and $6.00 $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

Review:
This parallel earth series continues by following up on the displaced WWII Americas and Japanese in their various engagements.

Flint is trapped facing major Grik opposition in Indiaa while General Alden and others under his command try to find a way to get through to help with several different forces that have been trying to push for control of strategic land areas. Meanwhile the Grik, with the aid of the madman Japanese Commander, Kurokawa, are bringing their newly built fleet of ships and air dirigibles to attack their enemies, the Americans and their allies. Kurokawa is not giving full information to the brutal Grik as he meets secretly with other Japanese officers and plans to overthrow the Grik leadership.

The crew from USS Walker are at Respite Island with Emperor Radcliff. Matt (Captain Reddy) is preparing for his wedding to Sandra and a general celebration of the successes so far over the Dominion. The news comes in that another Allied ship has failed to defeat the Japanese POW murderers on their superior ship. Matt makes the difficult decision to take Walker, which already needs repairs, to eliminate that murderous threat once and for all. This creates a confrontation between Sandra and Matt as Sandra has to reconcile his position as extreme commander with her fears for his safety.

Imperial Commodore Jenks takes his ship, Achilles, from North America heading to the Enchanted Islands to secure the safety of those lands in the British battle against the Holy Dominion threat. The Imperial family come under attack and betrayal and treachery are revealed.

There are more personal stories of individual characters busy doing their part to help the battle or rescue other friends. I didn’t find this installment to be quite as exciting as the previous books, but the action picks up mid way and I still enjoyed the informative details of weapon and defense development. All of the action continues to reveal interesting aspects of the societies and continues the warmth of the characters working together through their hardships of war. I have Book 8 available to listen to in the near future.

Audio Notes: I am still impressed by how well Mr. Dufris infuses the personalities into the characters with the voice accents and inflections. This series is really fun listening for me.

Review:
Vashia is the daughter of a powerful, uncaring planetary Governor. She has learned that he has agreed to ‘give’ her to his evil, ambitious henchman, Jarn. Vashia runs, rather than submit, fleeing into unsavory parts of the city to dodge Jarn and his brutes. Her accounts are frozen and her options reduced to only one supposed friend. Her friend steers her to become a bride candidate on another planet for an alien race known as the Shrouded.

Vashia makes friends with other bride candidates on the trip to Shroud. One tells the legend that the princes of Shroud choose their new king by a bride ceremony where the heart stone of the culture selects the “kingmaker.” Supposedly the pair are bonded in true love by the stone. Although some of the girls believe the story, Vashia doesn’t. She just hopes that her life on Shroud will be better than marriage to the evil Jarn.

Dolfan is one of the seven princes and he is more interested in getting a love bond through the heart than getting to be king. He is shocked to feel an electrical attraction to Vashia who seems to respond to him too. He is sure that she is intended for him until one of the other princes shows competing interest.

As soon as Vashia is exposed to the first two of the princes she feels an unmistakable buzz. Then the heart binds her... but not to the man she first was attracted to but to a stranger. The heart is never wrong and no one has ever challenged its choice but things are not right. Dolfan and unexpected allies sense that the match is wrong and they must find a way to correct the situation.

Several men have plotted through betrayal and lies to allow one particular prince to gain the throne. One seeks to escape with wealth, another seeks power and a third secretly plots to take over the planet and its special and protected markets. Now the fractured leadership council faces a nefarious attack by none other than Vashia's father and her enemy, Jarn. Someone within has betrayed the people by allowing evil forces to get past the defenses and threaten to ruin life as it has been known on Shroud.

Vashia first escapes one unwanted match only to end in another wrong match. The characters are extremely likeable... or not when it comes to the evil ones. The emotions range from fear, pain, betrayal and horror to joy. The worlds created are imaginative and intriguing and there is a surprising twist to the heart bond. I loved the action and danger which kept the story moving with a fast pace so that I read this in one 24 hour period!
