Martha's Bookshelf***Friday Pick Giveaway September 2, 2011

This is posting late as I forgot my cord and the battery on my laptop is "dying."  I wasn't be able to pick winners until the morning when I can make entries to my spreadsheet so I can see if their are any automatic wins.  Then I decided to train my assistant so she may be posting winners while I am away on our cruise.
Look below to see I have added a new group of books  #22!

Thank you to all who entered August 26 Pick. There were two Automatic winners this week (those who requested the book four times and I did not note other people asking for that book during those weeks).
Louisa who chose Bloody Good
Carol L who chose Wicked Widow

CONGRATULATIONS
to Winners from August 26 Pick:
Sarah E chose the Grisham pair
and
Krystal chose Vanity

All winners please fill in the Winner's Acceptance Form or email me to confirm your win, send your snail mail address information and let me know if you would like bookmarks - sensual or sexy +plus - I am currently low on just sweet.

I have finally updated the intro and Entry paragraphs here:

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books!  And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

So far I have posted 22 groups of 16 books to find new homes!

I am continuing to include the full list updated with chosen books crossed off until I get around to deleting the crossed off books.  You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!  I am happy to say that so far about 221 books have found new homes! YAY. I have to update my print out to check the correct number sent out.

Note rules here regarding international entries.
Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.
I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $5.00 and $6.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00.  If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy. :o)

TO ENTER:

Leave a comment and tell me WHICH BOOK you would like to get from the Friday Pick lists.
CUT OFF TIME IS THURSDAY  NIGHTS AT 10:00 PM CENTRAL so I do not have to stay up past midnight to do the winner post!
I will randomly pick two winners to announce Friday mornings before the next Pick post.
WINNERS PLEASE CHECK THE WIN POST ON FRIDAYS AND fill in the Winner's Acceptance Form or email me at mesreads@gmail.com.  I will confirm receipt of the addresses.  If I have the winners e-mail I will send a reminder in a week or so....

Thanks for helping these books find new homes!!

Repeating this helpful blog tip: You can right click on a link and you will be given the choice to open the link in a new window or tab so you do not navigate away from the screen you are on!! I use this all the time!

Audio Book Review: The Cay by Theodore Taylor

This is an engaging audio - an adventure with a nice message.
The CayThe Cay

  • Reading level: Ages 9-12
  • Audio CD
  • Publisher: Listening Library (Audio); Unabridged edition (February 8, 2005)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1400099064
  • ISBN-13: 978-1400099061
     Genre:  Middle School, Adventure
     My Rating:  4.25 of 5.0
Description from School site:  When a freighter to the United States is torpedoed during World War II, an 11-year-old boy is blinded and stranded with an elderly black man who teaches him survival skills.
Phillip Enright lives with his parents on the island of Curaçao where his father works for Royal Dutch Shell. There is a threat of a German invasion and Mrs. Enright decides to take Phillip back to the states. When the ship they are traveling on is torpedoed, Phillip is separated from his mother and left floating on a wooden raft with Timothy, a black man from the West Indies. The two drift to a small cay where they are left to survive with only a small amount of food salvaged from the ship. Phillip, who is blinded by a head injury, must depend on Timothy to stay alive. Though Phillip has been reared to be prejudiced against blacks, his attitude changes as Timothy teaches him to be independent in spite of his blindness.
Review: I didn’t have the “product description” so the story was a pleasant surprise for me.

Phillip doesn’t want to leave his father in Curacao but his mother insists on fleeing the WWII battles. However their ship is torpedoed and 11 year old Phillip ends up on a raft with Timothy and a hardy cat. Phillip was raised with elite white man prejudices against the blacks. Timothy turns out to be an elderly black man and Phillip isn’t quite sure what to make of him. But Timothy is the young boy’s only hope for survival, especially after he is blinded by an injury.

Timothy is practical in his approach to survival and beaches the raft over the protests of Phillip.  He sets up shelter and forages for food. Then he patiently but persistently trains Phillip to pitch in and learn the details of survival. They even face a hurricane during which they have to lash themselves to keep from being swept away.

It took just a bit to get used to the accented narration. However the narrator does a very good job catching the exuberance and fear of the boy and the tired, sometimes subserviant but mostly wise and gruff negro.  The story moved along quickly and I think it would be an enjoyable read, and an even better audio listen, for middle school children as well as adults.

    It's Monday! What are you Reading August 29, 2011?

    This meme starts at Book Journey!
    What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

    Last week was strange - I actually took off All Wednesday to have a "girl day" with my sister, daughter and the granddaughters. Really rare for me to take off! Then I spent part of Saturday with my family.  :-)
    I finished three books last week.  I posted three reviews, two with Giveaways.  As usual, I posted the regular Friday Pick Giveaway; Saturday Sharing Beyond Books, and Sunday posts.

    I did get to visit a dozen or so other Monday Reading posts last week.  These were last week's posts plus Winner posts not listed.

    I really like this series!
    Product Description.
    Lady Alexia Maccon, soulless, is at it again, only this time the trouble is not her fault. When a mad ghost threatens the queen, Alexia is on the case, following a trail that leads her deep into her husband's past. Top that off with a sister who has joined the suffragette movement (shocking!), Madame Lefoux's latest mechanical invention, and a plague of zombie porcupines and Alexia barely has time to remember she happens to be eight months pregnant.
    Will Alexia manage to determine who is trying to kill Queen Victoria before it is too late? Is it the vampires again or is there a traitor lurking about in wolf's clothing? And what, exactly, has taken up residence in Lord Akeldama's second best closet?

    This “stand-alone” prequel to A Light on the Veranda is a romantic novel of intrigue and suspense set in modern-day New Orleans with echoes of nineteenth century Louisiana, when Cotton was King.  Corlis McCullough, a take-no-prisoners TV journalist, late of Los Angeles, and her former UCLA nemesis, King Duvallon, an historic preservationist with deep roots in the Crescent City, are an unlikely pair to join forces to save a beautiful Greek Revival building with origins linked mysteriously to those of their own ancestors during the Golden Age in the Big Easy   Both must grapple with the unlikely concept of “genetic memory,” a force that appears to be intruding on their lives and thwarting any chance for ultimate happiness.

    Product Description
    On the path toward greatness, even a hero makes mistakes.
    Armed with his magical sword and otherworldly horse, Gwalchmai proves himself the most feared and faithful warrior of Arthur's noble followers. But while defending the kingdom, he commits a grave offense against the woman he loves, leading her to disappear from his life and haunt his memories.
    With his trusted servant, Rhys, a commonsense peasant, Gwalchmai tries to find her in the Kingdom of Summer, where Arthur has sent him. But an unexpected and most malevolent force of evil and darkness is loose-that of his mother, the witch-queen Morgawse-and Gwalchmai finds that the secrets of his past may deny him peace...
    In the second book of Gillian Bradshaw's critically acclaimed trilogy, Sir Gawain comes to life as Gwalchmai, startlingly human yet fantastically heroic.

But even more shocking is the sight of Jack's five-year-old daughter Faith, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Shannon's own daughter Kylie. Sunday Words of Encouragement August 28, 2011

    Today was Cradle Roll Sunday when they bring all the children under 4 to the front introducing them, their parents and grandparents. They were so cute and sweet. It just put me in mind of the well known songs for children.

    This entry is short today as we had Connect groups five families in our group met for lunch. We just got home and I am so ready for a nap. (I'm saving the sermon notes for a week during our trip next month.) :-)

    I hope you will enjoy these simple childrens' songs.

    A Verse for Today.
    Psalm 127:3 New International Version (NIV)
    Children are a heritage from the LORD,
    offspring a reward from him.

    We prayed this morning for children, for a couple going on a missions trip to Bolivia and, of course, for those suffering from Hurricane Irene.

    Sharing Beyond Books #11 August 27, 2011

    Saturday night again! Thanks for your comments this past week.
    I really enjoyed the shared comments regarding genres.  Most of us have been surprised by trying a new genre. I think we need to convince Louisa to try at least one nonfiction and make her pleasantly surprised. :-) Maybe we can give her recommendations... like the Get Er Done title I reviewed Friday.

    Most of us try not to read the same genres at the same time; many of us do them in a row because they are part of our review queues.
    Also most of us who write reviews do not compare books in our reviews. But Ricki had really good points about comparing newer reads to classic books.

    The Winner from SBB #10 comments is: #14 Aik Aik is overseas so I image she will pick GC or PayPall Credit. Please let me know your choice by completing the WINNER FORM.

    WEEK #11 Questions
    I was backing down to two questions but sometimes the questions come in three like last week and again this week. :-)

    Q1.  I saw this question at Mz Sazzy Angel's TGIF and thought it was a good one for us - Thanks Angelica! Which genre, authors, or particular books do you think people associate with your reading style?
    A:  Hmmm - I'm pretty eclectic so I hope people associate me with variety although I probably do a lot of romance.  You can tell me truly - what do you associate me with?
     Photo from Underway Life

    Q2.  Mariska asks the second question this week:  Do you suffer from any phobias? How do you cope with it?
    No - I don't have any real phobia's. This question came up at good timing since I just finished The Vampire Next Door where the heroine suffers from agoraphobia.

    ~~~~
    Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask.  Input suggestions in this Suggested Question FormAt the end of each month I will draw from the suggestions I used the month before and that person will get a book choice or GC.  FOR AUGUST THE suggestions were offered by Winnie, Mariska, Winnie and Mariska. Random.org selected #2 so Mariska gets to pick a book or GC.
    Your turn to share:
    1. What genre, authors or particular books do people associate with your reading style? (Part 2 - what do you associate with me? :-)
    2. Do you have any phobias? How do you cope with it?
    SBB Comment Winners can choose a selection from the remaining  Valentine and "Love" books or the remaining Christmas Giveaway Books - there are still about 17 books available plus 3 left in the Summer titles to choose from.
