Whew- today was busy - five court hearings in two counties. Plus preparing for two closings. Busy, busy. Thank goodness for reading on the road! 
And rainy cold today -brrr again. Strange - the temperature is not as cold as last week - low  of 43 - but it is so chilly because it is damp.

[UPDATED NOTE - US entrants I prefer, please, that you pick a book as that is the first purpose of this giveaway - to find new homes for books. The GCs are for the international entrants because postage has jumped up.]

I have finally updated the intro and Entry paragraphs here:

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in five years I have posted 42 groups of 16 (832) books to find new homes! (as of November 2014).

I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want! I am happy to say that so far about 756+ books have found new homes! YAY. I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed.

Note rules here regarding international entries.

Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $5.00 $7.00 and $6.00 $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

Review:
Jay Anderson and his friends are quirky high school seniors, already ostracized because of their high intelligence. Jay is suddenly accused of selling drugs making him a pariah to his teachers, fellow students and even his parents. The only people who believe him innocent are his best friends, Kathy, Jeff, Ryan and Rachel. Kathy tears apart the evidence managing to get the case dismissed but that doesn’t change the minds of those who were quick to deem him guilty.

Rachel finds an incriminating picture that places a high government official involved in framing Jay. Amid an unusual rash of anger and high tempers in town, Jeff finds evidence of another government cover-up effecting the town’s water reservoir. The 'bug' not only causes the violent tempers but can cause death too. The teens are alarmed and head out in different directions to try to figure out what is going on and how to save their town.

Jay and Kathy visit a Senator in Washington, DC, who is a friend of the family. Jay hopes that perhaps he can give help but the next thing they know they are on the run from government officials. Their race to prevent the deadly plan sends them on a train ride, into desolate, cold mountains on foot and eventually to Russia.

Jay and Kathy have secrets that are a surprise even to them. While certain high level conspirators want them captured, controlled or maybe dead, there is finally a high government force that decides to protect and help them. The problem is the ‘good guys’ can’t get close to the kids to let them know they have back-up.

There is a lot of action that keeps this moving and interesting. However, there are also a lot of improbable episodes. These teens are portrayed as some type of genius superheroes. I enjoyed the quiet faith input and confidence that was portrayed, especially in Jay. I also appreciated the depth of friendship between Kathy and Jay who are resisting the temptations to be ‘friends with benefits’.

 This is fun and entertaining as long as you set aside realism. I recommend it as fun action, suspense and entertainment.

Audio Notes: Robert Martinez does a good job providing different voices for the characters. His narration helps to keep the story fun and enhanced the "reading" experience for me.

I received this audio through Audiobook Jukebox for an honest review. This will count toward my 2015 Audiobook Challenge.

Review:
Will Henderson was not born Amish but was raised by a good Amish couple after being left, ‘temporarily’, with them as a five year old. Will is now 22 and has chosen to live the “plain” life. He is soon to be married to a lovely young Amish woman, Karen. However, Will is tortured with abandonment issues and insecurities that threaten the serenity of his marriage, if his jealousy doesn’t forestall the marriage altogether. Even Karen begins to feel that Will is not ready for marriage if he cannot face this issues of his past and grow beyond them.

While Will struggles with his anger and bitterness, his natural father wonders where his boy might be and how he is fairing. He has a new wife and children but he has never forgotten the son he left behind when he went looking for a stable job. Is there any possible way he can find his son and if he does, could Will forgive him?

This is a nice story of forgiveness, acceptance and the importance of communication. The writing style is simple and this reads very easily and quickly. However I was a bit bored at a third in. I did like the ending but feel the beginning and middle of the book could have had less mundane dialogue (and running to the telephone) and more rich Amish setting and life-descriptions. These characters were almost too much like normal “Englishers”. Plus I found it hard to believe there would be so many horse and buggy accidents in such a short time.

I read this with my Ladies’ book club. Several of the ladies loved the easy read and fully enjoyed the story. A couple others were like me - we liked the ending but felt the book lacked the rich details we like in Amish stories. We did enjoy that there was more depth to the story than a simple romance but on the other hand, we were not fully pulled in by the characters or story. (Maybe we are action junkies.) The pie recipe was in the print copy but not the Kindle version. One of our ladies made it and said it was wonderful!

This is the second book I have read by this author and I think her writing is just not my cup of tea although her books are popular. This book has good ratings and is an example that confirms that not every author or every style of writing suits every reader the same. I would recommend this to readers who enjoy an easy style read with life issues facing Amish characters.

First full week in 2015 is now completed. All is still good here although it was a cold week for us. I have been doing some traveling for court while we work on closings too.

Reading was good, with one quick read and one fairly quick listen. The third book is taking longer.  I posted three reviews, leaving two for this week so far. I also posted my usual memes.

I didn't purchase any books but that didn't stop me adding more free kindle titles to my library.

Sunday Words of Encouragement January 11, 2015

We are wrapping up the study in Revelations which has been wonderfully exciting. It is fascinating too that, as we are reading the Bible from the beginning again, we see passages in Genesis, Matthew and Psalms that tie into Revelations. The redemption theme of Christ runs through the Bible from beginning to end shared in 66 books, by 40 authors and over 1600 years. I always see this as awesome - God inspired!

Our pastor preached a sermon titled: Living Worthy of the Lord. The question he said to ask ourselves is: “Am I living, walking, worthy or the Lord? Colossians 1:10 states: “so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;”. (ASB)

No one likes a traitor but many Christians behave in a traitorour way, not living their lives to please God. If you love God, then you will live a life that shows that love; bearing good gruit and seeking more knowledge of God. Being worthy will show these three traits:
1) Being loyal, bringing Him glory through our daily walk;
2) Doing good works that will glorify Him (bearing good fruit); and
3) Growing in knowledge of God.

The family of Christians should be standing firm, in one spirit, striving together for faith of the gospel. Philippians 1:27. Don’t allow your daily life, home or work, or church differences, to distract or turn you from the path that God has put before you. He keeps working on us, in us and through us, if we let Him.

I searched for two hours for the song to share today.

I found many good songs but this is the one that fits for me today! :-)

Only three of seventeen have a Little Free Library nearby. Most of us had not heard of this before, but many thought it was a great idea. I agree with Di, that I wondered if these were set up where there are no public libraries. The rules don't seem to restrict to that but it makes more sense.

Q1. Nrlymrtl asks:  If you're in the middle of a very good book, perhaps even an intense scene, and the phone rings, what do you do? Answer? Ignore??

A: What a fun question! I keep my cell phone on silent most of the time so I don't know it rang until I pick it up again. :-) The house phone has an automatic answering machine so we usually don't answer it either but just return calls. So I guess I ignore the phones and don't let them interrupt my reading!

Maybe we should all have a Cell Lock-up for reading time!

Review:
Royce, the thief, and Hadrian, the ex-mercenary, have joined to create a business known as Riyria. They take odd jobs to recover lost objects or escort travelers and seekers. Once again they have stepped into a job that brings trouble. They were hired by a candlemaker to help gather pieces of a treasure map and then locate the treasure. The problem is that the treasure belonged to a dwarf who not only left mixed, riddling clues, but the passage is riddled with traps.  One of the clues was possessed by a pig farmer who insisted on joining the treasure hunt. Now he is sorry he came along as the four escape one monster only to get trapped in another room. They face another puzzle and have to make the right choice of action if they want to survive and escape.

I enjoyed the puzzle and the moral in the solution. There is plenty of action and fun dialogue to make it interesting even though short. I enjoyed the main protagonists in Volumes 1 and 2 of The Riyria Revelations. I have Volume 3 in my Audible library and plan to listen to that soon. I was glad to pick up this free story that gives a short, quick visit with Royce and Hadrian. If you haven't read in the Revelations or Chronicle series this is a good way to get just a little taste of the excitement and fun. If you have read any of the other books you will no doubt want to grab this morsel to enjoy. The story can easily be read or listened to without having read the other works, although I recommend the whole series.

Audio Notes: Tim Gerard Reynolds does a wonderful job with this quick story. He manages voices for each of the characters that conveys a bit of their personalities that fit into the tale. I am looking forward to listening to Reynolds on Heir of Novron.

This is a very quick story from my own TBR library. It qualifies for TBR Double Dog Dare, and COYER and Audio challenges.

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in five years I have posted 42 groups of 16 (832) books to find new homes! (as of November 2014).

I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want! I am happy to say that so far about 754+ books have found new homes! YAY. I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed.

Note rules here regarding international entries.

Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $5.00 $7.00 and $6.00 $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. I recommend this for dystopian fans, but try the text for more clarity.

Review:
The society this story describes is not one I would want to live in. This portrays a scary dystopian world. A religious group called The Way has slowly joined with government to control all aspects of work and life. Overpopulation and contamination of resources has resulted in food shortages, limited licencing, quick and unjust incarceration and controlled population growth. Instead of being allowed freedom to have children the privilege must be paid for. Some young women are used as selective breeders. As the years pass the society becomes more dark and hopeless. Those who don’t comply, don’t survive, one way or another.

I found the story interesting but very difficult to follow on audio. There are a handful of characters whose lives are followed over 25 days through a period of 40 years. Some of the scenarios are brutal; some are appalling to 'normal' society; and a few are heart warming and heart wrenching. It was difficult for me to connect all the vignettes.

I recommend this be added to any dystopian reading list. However, for this book, I would recommend the text and not the audio. I think it would be easier to track the characters and the changes in the society with the written version, especially if you are a listener who does other things (chores, driving, etc) while listening. If you sit quietly and listen, this might work.

Audio Notes: I think the narrator, Dave Thompson, did a good job with a difficult project. It might have been better with this work to have different narrators for the different character lines.

Review:
Agnes was content with her first marriage which was a practical arrangement with an older neighbor. Now she is content as a widow living in the country with her unmarried, older sister. She attends a dance at the home of her friend and is delighted to dance, not once but twice, with the gorgeous, charismatic, and rather enigmatic Viscount Ponsonby. Agnes is completely smitten but accepts that she will never see him again. Flavian returns to the community six months later and, to Agnes’ consternation, he not only flirts with her but proposes to her. She is confused and afraid to risk the passion she fears may be involved in their relationship.

Flavian is one of the Survivor’s Club. His head wounds left him with memory lapses and rages. He had to relearn even how to speak and he still stutters a bit. That doesn’t stop the ladies from flocking after him. Yet he struggles with memories of his childhood sweetheart, Velma, who broke their engagement when he was injured and married his good friend instead. His friend has died and Flavian's mother, sister and others are clearly planning on bringing him back together with Velma. Instead, Flavian finds Agnes to be ‘enchanting”, sensible and "safe"...promising a place of peace amid his tumultuous mind.

Agnes accepts Flavian’s rather sudden and not so romantic proposal. They are married quickly with their Survivor’s Club friends as witnesses. But they will still have to face the daunting task of meeting their parents and introducing Agnes to the ton.  Rumors threaten some scandal which makes it even more difficult for the pair to reluctantly share their secrets, learn to trust and accept their own growing feelings.

I always enjoy the warm characters that Mary Balogh creates. There is a charming range of natural emotions from fear and sorrow, to joy...and of course, love. The conflict in the human drama is appropriate to the time period and setting and allows for an engaging romance that grows from only enchanting to something much richer. The writing flows beautifully for a lovely reading experience. I highly recommend this series to readers who love historical romance. Ms. Balogh is a favorite author for me and a ‘must read’ author in this genre.

These authors offer five tips to help ladies do it all without becoming overwhelmed: rise early, sit down, sit longer (occasionally), choose friends wisely, and take fifteen minutes. By weaving biblical principles of God's Word into these keys, these authors give women practical advice on how to fulfill-and excel in-their daily responsibilities.

Review:
This is a lovely time management guide based on biblical principles. It is direct and on point while being very quick and easy to read. The authors relate to personal, everyday life experiences. Most people can relate to planning a shopping trip, as when you go to the market or outlet mall. Even those, like me, who do not shop a lot, usually make a list or have a purpose when heading to the store. This book compares our purposeful intent in shopping to ‘shopping’ for time with the intent of doing what God wants to do in our lives.

The focus of the book is to PLAN to make time for God and the most important priorities in our lives: family, relationships and service. The arguments are extrapolated from Ephesians 5:15-16 which states: “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. The goal is to “assist you to bring glory to the Savior through every season” of your life. The authors list and discuss five tips to manage our time to be fruitful in our service to God.

Not all of the tips or tools suggested are new but, for me, they are given with new insight and with the best purpose of all. The underlying message confirmed to me is the biblical foundation of Matthew 6:33: "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." (NIV)  I don’t feel I can describe too much detail without giving spoilers. However, consider that I marked 45 notes out of 99 pages! Also I have instituted a new method to add to my Bible study with two questions the authors suggest.

The only reason I did not rate this book as 5.0 is due to the errors in the kindle version.  There were repeats in phrases and the letter “u” came out as “v” throughout. It is still easily read but the errors are distracting and off putting. I would encourage the authors and publisher to go back and clean up the text.

I really enjoyed the tips and the great nuggets in this little gem. It was a perfect book for me as the first book of 2015. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to spend more time serving God.
