I had a another good, if busy, week. Trial two went well with a good result. Looks like this week's trial is going forward but I feel comfortable about my prep.
Cooler weather has settled in.
Now we are spending time praying for healing in our country.

It seems like reading was down a bit. I finished one audiobook and one ebook. I posted three reviews, one with giveaway. I also posted the usual memes.

I had a good time visiting other bloggers early last week.
This week I share the link to BermudaOnion's Weblog.
I've visited Kathy many times over the past few years and I appreciate that she supports Indie Bookstores. I am pleasantly surprised that she almost always has books and authors that are new to me.

October 30, 2016 - I got a few days behind last weekend.
I have been listening to the companion commentary online for the past few days to get caught up.
I am enjoying reading The One Year Bible again along with my husband and others from our church.

Sunday Words of Encouragement November 13, 2016

We had another good Sunday School discussing spiritual warfare and continuing prayer for our nation. Pastor’s wonderful Sermon was titled: “One Nation Under God”.

Many of the ‘older generation’ grew up saying the pledge of allegiance every morning in school. Many also sang patriotic songs. Everyone felt on equal ground, looking together at the flag. Eyes were not on self or each other but on the flag. The pledge signified a commitment to guard our country’s freedoms for the future. Now instead of valuing unity, we are focusing on differences that divide us; even the flag and the pledge.

The divisions this year have been clearly focused on by the media. After the election emotions continue to run high. Some people are relieved, some angry, some fearful, some disconnected. Many, on both sides of issues, are afraid for their safety. People from foreign countries are afraid that families will be torn apart. The news media continues to focus on violence; someone is paying protestors. Young adults are trying to cope and understand.

We must remember that no one person can bring down the country.Change is not known to happen fast under government rule. The degrading morality in our country may have seemed to come about quickly.  (It really occurred over time - at least the last 50 years.) Reestablishing morality is likely to be a slow process … and faces resistance as people have different views of morality. ‘One Nation under God’ is no longer a pledge that is true for all.

Pastor asked us to consider the four words:
One = unified, powerful
Nation = melting pot
Under= submitted to authority
God = a super power that reigns over a super nation.

Although many people may be tempted to close others out, true Christians need to recognize that scared people give us an opportunity to reach out. 1 Timothy 2:1-6 tells us to not just pray, but intercede for each other. Paul reminds us that we have One God and one mediator who wants everyone to be saved.

Today’s sermon point: Where there is great chaos, there is even greater opportunity to share Jesus. 

Pray for all people; don’t argue with them. There are many ways to approach the current atmosphere displayed in personal contact and social media. Some want to hide their heads in the sand; others want to be defensive, to hunker down, isolate and protect themselves. There are those who are offensive and divisive, ridiculing and threatening others who have different opinions.

Christians can take a better approach by offering love and peace as encouraged by Galatians 5.
Jesus could have come as a powerful king (even more, as a God) but he humbled himself and used every situation to seek opportunity to share with others.

We are told in Luke 11:17 that Jesus stated that ‘a nation divided against itself will fall’. (Also see Matthew 12:25 and Mark 3:24-25.) This is a tool that Satan can use to his advantage.

It is hard for some of us to understand the fears of those in the other groups. All we can do is love and pray. We can be one person under God. We can intercede, praying with specifics, not just generalities, for individuals as well as leaders. We can be ready with our testimony.

Pastor directed us to do these three things:
1 Pray for those hurting, (intercede), and look for open doors.
2. Be careful with your words (be sensitive).
3. Love people. Smile at people. Say kind words.

Jesus died for those who scorned, hated, abused and crucified him. Loving starts with the individual and with the church.

I think this song is good for today. Speak Life.

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.


Lord, I pray that you will help me each morning to pray that I have an opportunity each day to love on someone; to share kindness and your message.

I looked but didn't see that we had discussed this before. Since we are coming up on Thanksgiving soon, when lots of families have turkey, this seemed appropriate. I do love a nice cold turkey sandwich from leftover turkey. Looking up tonight's image I found lots of yummy suggestions though!

Twenty years ago the barriers between worlds came down and our reality was swallowed up by the Shadowlands. Now we scavenge to survive, until one day there’s nothing left to reap. Starvation is around the corner, but I’m not the roll over and wait-to-die kinda girl. Nope, I’m going further than anyone has ever been and returned to tell the tale. I’m going into the Beyond, and I’m not coming back without a solution.
Dark urban fantasy with a post-apocalyptic twist.

Review:
Ash and her big brother, Clay, (older by a year) watched their parents starve while they refused to allow the teens to become Reapers. Now the two live in the underground Shelter because Ash signed on as a Reaper who goes out to the Shadowlands to scavenge for food, medicines or anything else that might help the survivors who live in Shelter. Scavenging is becoming scarce and the resources are being used up – even if the leadership is hiding that secret. Ash is prepared to go beyond the Horizon into the Beyond to find a solution to save her brother and her new ‘family’.

Ash gets another strong Reaper, Bernadette, to help her on her suicide quest. They do find food but they also find major trouble. As the Shadows begin to swallow them something strange occurs. They survive to struggle to a haven in the Shadowlands. The place is a refuge for all sorts of creatures, including humans although the humans are little more than slaves in this bizarre facility. There are god-like leaders -- aka controllers-- who recognize that there is something special and unique about Ash. They are willing to protect her while they figure out who or what she is but meanwhile her friend has been sold to the Traders.

Ash isn’t about to help anyone until she gets help rescuing her friend. There is another being who can help her, but he is part beast who may, or may not, be able to control himself. Despite the extreme danger he will face, Daemon agrees to take Ash to another realm where Bernadette has been taken. Daemon is soon captured and Ash must find a way to rescue him next.

I did have trouble with the beginning which is liberally peppered with the “f” word. I almost stopped at about 15% in but I am glad that I pushed through because I did enjoy the story once I managed to ignore the language. There are also liberal sexual orientations shared in the story. They are nicely and respectfully handled so I wasn’t bothered by them but their presence should be noted for those who don’t want to read about homosexual and bisexual characters.

I enjoyed the fast-pace of this story with its diverse and interesting characters. I liked all of the diverse creatures and strong characters. The world building is very good and the danger and action kept me engaged, skimming past the bad language, as I wanted to know what would happen next.

This is another title I received for free through a multi-author promotion.

Review:
John Luther is the head of a large church and struggles to balance his primary goals of sharing the Gospel and spending time with his family. He has friends in high places but one of them decides that John is an obstruction to a new ‘faith and fairness’ bill. This powerful ‘friend’ arranges to move John out of the way. Although the friend doesn’t set up the details, his hired operative, “Mr. Gray”, frames John to destroy his reputation and remove him from the head of his church. Because of past behavior, others are quick to believe the worst.

John has lived in the shadows before and can go into hiding. There is a pair of FBI agents who are looking beyond the obvious trail of clues. John knows he has some family and friends he can count on but he must be careful not to put their lives at risk. He has no reason to trust the authorities and there are friends he shouldn’t trust either. As John tries to prove his innocence on his own (and with the help of his faith) – a ‘David fighting Goliath’-- the betrayer moves to build his power.

The story moves quickly and the page-turning action hints that the corruption reaches the highest levels. The threats and machinations are scary and, sadly, believable. I have read numerous stories over the past several years that make me more aware and accepting of the implication that there is very likely corruption and evil in political situations. I find it sad that men seek ‘power’ instead of authority to promote the good of the people.

Persecution is real although less apparent in our own country as it may be in other countries.
This story touches on issues beyond the obvious issue of religious freedoms. It addresses parenting concerns and estrangement between father and son. The story evokes a wide range of emotions, from fear, horror and distrust to joy, relief and victory - almost.

Interestingly, it appears that this novel was written based on the screenplay and movie. The questions posed after the book are very good for contemplation and discussion. I recommend this to readers who enjoy a political thriller and especially to those who would enjoy the Christian elements.

I selected this for Ladies Book Club October read as I thought it would be rather timely. Everyone enjoyed the read.

"Summer Farmer", the first short story in White Man's Problems, sets the stage for the honest and heartfelt themes explored in Morris' debut collection. The meeting of two disparate strangers serves as a cleverly crafted examination of the universality of longing, remorse, and purpose.

Review:
“Summer Farmer” is just one short story in White Man’s Problems. The story addresses the daily ‘grind’ and depression of a businessman as he travels to work in Los Angeles. The protagonist, Harrigan, has lost a daughter to leukemia. In his grief he looks around the busy city and sees the glitter which isn’t important. He thinks about his past, where he came from and where he has come to.

The story gets an extra touch when Harrigan meets an elevator repairman who mirrors his sadness as he too has lost a daughter. Here, the author ties two strangers who share more in the basics of life than they could realize.

The story has a poignancy that I liked. I think the full collection would share similar glimpses that show a common thread among men.

Audio Notes: Matthew McConaughey has a slow, subtle speech presentation. This fit the story’s tone and subtle message. I enjoyed the story and its presentation.

I had a pretty good week. Prepared for my two trials this week and another next week. The first one is continued and the second is all lined up. Still talking settlement on the third.
Weather continues to fluctuate with cool nights and warmer days; we could use some rain..
We've been spending time praying for our US Elections.

I had some good travel time for reading and listening this week. I finished two ebooks and am three fourths through the audio. I only got two reviews posted, plus the usual memes.

I had a nice time visiting other bloggers early last week.

Sunday Words of Encouragement Sunday November 6, 2016

This morning our Sunday School teacher continued his lessons on Spiritual Warfare. We had “home” missionaries (from our own congregation) visiting from their South American mission field. They shared how we can pray for their safety in a country full of crime (drugs) and corruption. They noted that the country where they are serving was not founded on Christian values. The people are social, helping each other and open to relationships. They live in systemic poverty and need the message of hope that is being brought by the missionary team. This helped give us a different perspective on our own country.

Our Pastor’s sermon was geared toward preparing for our national election this Tuesday. He emphasized that we should each exercise our right to vote. While we are praying for foreign countries we need to be praying for our nation too. People are afraid; beyond nervous. Will some of our current rights be stripped away? What might happen to the supreme court? How will benefits or assistance be impacted? But we must be mindful that we are not responsible for the actions of the government.

We are told how we should act through the Bible. “Be strong and very courageous….” Joshua 1:7 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” Matthew 6:34

We can be reassured if we remember that God is in control and He is with us always. The Church has been through bad governments before. It was horrific then and maybe moving to horrific today. We have things comfortable in our nation while around the world, millions of Christians are living under tyranny today and many are suffering persecution. The Church continues to move forward and at times of trouble and repression the Church may pull together stronger. We are told to be under authority. Christians in government are frustrated because they are unable to accomplish good things. Our job is not to govern but to convey the gospel.

As Paul noted in Ephesians 6:12, we are not fighting earthly enemies. The task of the Christian is to ‘Go into the world and make disciples” Matthew 28: 20. Politics is divisive to relationships and distracting to our mission. Do not let it distract from mission to make disciples. We are called to be evangelists. We must keep politics in perspective.

The Church has often been used and abused in political situations. Some churches bend the principles and values from God’s word in their attempts to be ‘inclusive’. This too is a tool of the enemy to divide true believers. Do not let politics destroy your relationships. Jesus matters more than politics. The Gospel is our highest priority. Governments cannot legislate heart changes but lives can be changed if people embrace the message of the gospel: salvation through grace in the death and blood of Christ.

God is sovereign. He is not political. His priority is building the church of believers. Time is short but we know how it ends. Revelation 6:9 states that a certain number of saints will be martyred before Christ returns. We do not know when that number will be reached but we can rely on God’s sovereignty until that time comes.

In the meantime, we are called to pray. 2 Chronicles 7:14. (We return to church this evening for prayer for our nation and leaders.)

So here is what we do: Do not fear. Pray. Vote. Be a witness.

Heavenly Father – I give thanks that I have assurance in Your control of all circumstances and events, including this coming election. You are able to use all things (and people) to work together for good for those who love you. Even when things look like trouble or worse – we can trust in Your great love.

I have always loved to grow African Violets. At one time I had over 32 violet plants and a dozen varieties. They are my favorite even though I only have one right now. I also have several Christmas cactus that are growing well. One other house plant that I light to grow is orchids -- after all I do live in Florida!

Review:
Roxanna lost her mother to illness and her fiancé to another woman. She manages to travel during 1779 through the dangers of war torn Virginia to the Kentucky fort where her father is serving as scrivener. Along the way she is joined by a handful of less than upright women, with a mute young girl, who have decided they need to find another town. When Roxanna arrives at the fort she soon learns that her father has died in the field, leaving her destitute. Colonel Cassius McLinn was with Roxanna’s father when he gave his dying request that the Colonel take care of his daughter. It is too late in the year to travel so the commander hires Roxanna as the new scrivener.

Roxanna tries hard not to be attracted to the too handsome Colonel. especially since she doesn’t think a man like him could be interested in a spinster like her. The Colonel has secrets that he knows will devastate Roxanna if she ever finds out. He tries to maintain his distance but he finds himself drawn to her deep-seated faith and kindness. A kindness that might be able to forgive him for the darkest of actions.

Roxanna discovers her father’s diary that reveals a danger to the Colonel and the fort in the form of a traitorous spy. Meanwhile they must cope with enemy Indians and the nearing battle with the British Army led by none other than the Colonel’s bitter and estranged twin.

I liked Roxanna’s character from beginning to end. She has passion, spunk and courage sustained by her unwavering faith. The Colonel is a strong man with demons to fight. Their romantic resistance, conflict and misunderstandings are handled beautifully amid a story that shows day to day life on the dangerous American frontier. The writing is straight forward, smooth and moves quickly. Ms. Frantz weaves strong but quiet messages of faith in an action-packed plot. The story shares moments of sorrow, fear, joy, grace and love. There is a great blend of historical detail, action and romance. I highly recommend this to those who enjoy Christian fiction and historical romance. I will definitely seek to read more by this author.

Audio Notes: Laura Jennings does a lovely job with the narration. She manages both the female and male voices as well as subtle English and Irish accents. The tone is unusually hushed but that fit the tone and setting of the story. The narration enhanced my enjoyment of this story.

I received this audio title from the narrator through AudioBook Boom. This qualifies for my Audio Challenge.
