Book Review and Tour Giveaway: Nobody But You (Cedar Ridge) by Jill Shalvis

There are great characters in this light, sexy romance.
Nobody But You (Cedar Ridge)
by Jill Shalvis

File Size: 549 KB
Print Length: 465 pages
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing (March 29, 2016)
Publication Date: March 29, 2016
ASIN: B0112T4YJA
Genre: Contemporary Romance
My Rating: 4.0 of 5.0

SOMETIMES YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN . . .
After an overseas mission goes wrong, Army Special Forces officer Jacob Kincaid knows where he must go to make things right: back home to the tiny town of Cedar Ridge, Colorado. All he needs to scrub away his painful past is fresh mountain air, a lakeside cabin, and quiet solitude. But what he discovers is a gorgeous woman living on a boat at his dock.

Sophie Marren has nowhere else to go. She's broke, intermittently seasick, and fighting a serious attraction to the brooding, dishy, I'm-too-sexy-for-myself guy who's now claiming her dock. Something about Jacob's dark intensity makes her want to tease-and tempt-him beyond measure. Neither one wants to give any ground . . . until they realize the only true home they have is with each other.

Review:
Sophie is recovering from an ugly divorce. She really didn’t want anything from her cheating ex, Lucas, but when the Judge pushed her she claimed the one thing Lucas cared about the most – his boat. It doesn’t matter that she gets seasick and now she has to walk or bus to work and pay mooring fees. She keeps moving at night to docks of abandoned cabins until a gorgeous hunk, Jacob, catches her at the dock of the cabin he just rented.

While trying to resist Jacob, Sophie is working all over town as a temp until she can figure out what to do with her life. She is also trying to dodge Lucas who is a big man lawyer about town.

Meanwhile, Jacob is an alpha military man on bereavement leave that has him wanting to heal his personal life. He has returned home for the first time in nine years to face his twin and his half brothers and sister. Jacob expects to be rejected or to at least have to eat humble pie to get them to agree to let him become part of the family again.

Sophie runs into Jacob a couple of times with a clear chemistry zing each time. They soon agree that it might be safe to have a fling. After all, she is off men – mostly, and he is on temporary leave so he can promise not to fall -- so he thinks. But Jacob has never experienced a sassy, sexy domino like Sophie. And Sophie has never had such a capable man give her encouragement to stand on her own. Together they are combustible! Will Jacob commit to returning to make Cedar Ridge his home? Can he convince Sophia to risk her heart again?

This is full of light, fun dialogue and smokin’ attraction plus. I’d say about fifty percent of the story is sexual interaction between Sophie and Jacob which was fun but not what I want to read so much anymore. Fortunately, there is a strong relational story going on within Jacob’s family that adds to the conflict, love and humor.

This is the third book in the series but worked fine as a stand-alone. The characters are wonderfully real and the whole tone, beyond the insecurities, is warm and affirming. I enjoyed this fast paced read and recommend it to readers who are looking for a quick excursion into a light, sexy romance.

I received this title through NetGalley for an honest review as part of a tour event. This qualifies for NetGalley Challenge and N in Alphabet Soup Challenge.

EXCERPT:
   She eyed the bench a long beat but did eventually sit, perching primly as far from him as she could get and yet still be close enough to grab the bottle.
   Smart woman.
   She took the Scotch and drank. Her eyes watered and she coughed as she handed it to him. With a sigh, she leaned back to study the night sky. Her bared throat was slim and creamy smooth. An unexpected temptation. Remembering the flash of pain and vulnerability she’d unwittingly revealed, and that for whatever reason he’d somehow added to it, he spoke. “I’m sorry.”
   She glanced at him as if she’d never heard a man apologize before in her life. “For…breathing?” she asked. “Having a penis? What?”
   “You were upset because you didn’t know I was a Kincaid.”
   She sighed. “That was just me looking for a reason to be mad at you so I wouldn’t…”
   She bit her lower lip, clearly not wanting to go on.
   But now he had to know. “So you wouldn’t what?”
   “Nothing,” she said. “It’s just that I’m trying to make better choices.”
   “Of which I wouldn’t be one.”
   “It’s not necessarily your fault,” she said. “It’s that you’re a man.”
   “Guilty as charged.”
   “And I’m off men right now.”
   “And on…women?” he asked with admittedly more than a little fascination.
   She rolled her eyes. “I’m on no one, but thank you for proving my point on men.”
   “I get that,” he said. “But being off men doesn’t seem to be making you very happy, or sound like a whole lot of fun.”
   “Maybe I don’t need fun.”
   He understood that. He’d felt the same way since Brett died. “What do you need?” he asked, honestly wanting to know more about her.
   Instead of answering, she reached for the bottle. He waited until she met his gaze before letting go.
   “Nothing,” she said a little too quickly. “Everything’s…perfect.”
   “And your glass is half full,” he said. “So you’ve said.”
   But he didn’t believe her. “How about a game?”
   “I don’t play games.”
   Now, that wasn’t exactly true. Whether she knew it or not, she’d been playing with his head since he’d first laid eyes on her. “Three truths and a lie,” he said.
   She stared at him. “As in you tell me three truths and a lie, and I pick out the lie?”
   “Yes.”
   She considered this. “What do I get if I win?”
   “What do you want?”
   For the briefest of beats, her gaze dropped to his mouth.
   Oh, hell yeah, he thought. Want me…
   “My first boyfriend taught me that game,” she said.
   “What did the winner get?”
   “A kiss.”
   Definitely still playing with his head… “Is that what you want, Sophie? A kiss?”
   Again she stared at his mouth before dropping eye contact and wrapping that eye-stopping pink robe tighter around her body. “Do you?” she asked.
   “Hell yes.”
   Her gaze flew to his.
   “Problem is,” he said conversationally, “if I kissed you, I don’t think I’d be able to stop.”
   Her mouth literally fell open. The pulse at the base of her throat jumped. And she seemed to lose her words.
   He went on. “But you should know, I don’t lose. That means you’ll have to tell me three truths and a lie.” And he’d hopefully get to know more about her.
   She closed her mouth to bite her lower lip in what could’ve been indecision or excitement. Obviously he was hoping for the latter. “But hey, if you’re not sure you can handle losing, we can just forget about it,” he said.
   The challenge lifted her chin and put sparks in her eyes. That’s it, babe. Show me what you’ve got.
   “Bring it,” she said.

Simply Irresistible (Previously reviewed at this link.)

The Sweetest Thing
Review:
4.25
Tara has returned to Lucky Harbor to help her sisters and to ‘find herself’ after divorcing Logan, her famous, dashing, race car driver husband. Tara tends to be the controlling, sophisticated and intense sister. She has determined that she needs to take control of her life after a rocky entrance into adulthood and then a high profile marriage where she gave all of herself until she got tired of being alone.

Her rocky teenage summer was spent in Lucky Harbor in a first romance with Ford, who went off to become a world traveling boat racer. Tara was surprised to discover that Ford had returned home and now is owner of the local bar in town. There is history between them that makes them hesitate to get together but the sexual pull still sizzles. Tara doesn’t want a hot re-run of her 17th summer and she isn’t quite ready to think that Ford could commit to something long term.

Logan comes to town to try to win back the love he lost and that gets Ford thinking he doesn’t want to lose Tara now that he has a second chance. As always in the small town of Lucky Harbor the busybodies stick their noses in. The social media buzzes with sneak images of encounters and a poll for which man will win her heart.

The story is fun and steamy. I really liked the warmth between Tara and Ford and Mia entering their lives adds extra complications. The sisters and their beaus add additional interest too. Ms. Shalvis does a nice job of providing characters a reader can root for as they push and pull their way to a happy ending.

Kissing Santa Claus
Review:
4.0
This is a quick novella that brings a happy ending for Logan. It is just short and sassy and a quick, fun read.  Logan had a quick affair with Sandy after Tara chose Ford. Then Logan left town. Now he is returning six months later and Sandy isn't sure she wants to welcome him so easily even if her body responds differently than her head.

I’m not sure how I would have felt about it if I hadn’t gotten to know Logan in The Sweetest Thing. The characters are not deeply developed but there is enough there, with enough story to make it a satisfying nugget.

Under the Mistletoe
Review:
4.25
The reader meets Mia in The Sweetest Thing too. There she was a 17 year old who became infatuated with the local, all around errand boy, Carlos, a good looking young man with attitude. But Carlos stayed home in Lucky Harbor while Mia took off for the adventures of college. Now it is four years later and Mia is hoping her college boyfriend, Nick, will join her at Christmas in Lucky Harbor and meet her family and friends.

Nick grew up in foster homes and learned not to get attached or allow others to get too close. He has  enjoyed his dating time with Mia but hasn’t really even acknowledged them being together as ‘a relationship.’ He hesitates when she invites him home and she determines that he isn’t ready so she leaves without him.

When he shows up in Lucky Harbor he has to face Mia’s family and old boyfriend too. Will Nick be able to get Mia to move past the hurt he caused and allow them a second chance?

This is another quick short story with two sweet characters. I like the personality that Ms. Shalvis gives to Nick as it is a good and realistic blend of lone wolf confidence and vulnerability. This one doesn’t have quite as much heat as the other books which is okay with me.

As a package of two full novels and two shorts this is a great deal. It offers fun reading for those who enjoy contemporary, sassy to sizzling, happy ending romance.

ALWAYS ON MY MIND excerpt:

     He stared at her. “That’s quite a list of shortcomings,” he eventually said. “Is that all?”
     “No.” She shoved her wet hair from her face, though she managed to keep her regal stance, nose firmly in the air at nose-bleed height. “I held back because I didn’t want to be overly rude.”
     He laughed softly. “Don’t hold back, Leah. Let’s hear all of it.”
     “Well, your truck has more sporting goods than a store, you never say you’re sorry, and your girlfriends look like supermodels. I mean, what is that? There’s nothing wrong with real boobs, you know!”
     “I fail to see the problem.”
     She snorted again, and he was starting to feel greatly insulted. “You’re not exactly a walk in the park, Leah.”
     “No?”
     “No. You’re flighty, you live for your every whim, you downplay any real emotion you feel.”
     She hugged herself tight. “Good thing this is all pretend then, isn’t it,” she said softly.
     “Yeah.”
     She was freezing. And hauntingly gorgeous, so damn gorgeous standing there wet and silvery by the moon’s glow, like a goddess. It’s Leah, he had to keep reminding himself. Leah, who’d once beaten him in a marshmallow-eating contest, only to puke all over him. Leah, whose dark-green eyes had a way of telling the world to bite her. Leah, who’d run off on him and left him heartbroken. He took a step into her—for what exactly, he had no idea—and she poked a finger into his chest.
     “God,” she said. “You’re so…” Words apparently failed her, but she let out a sound that managed to perfectly convey how annoying he was.
     “Ditto,” he said, and then grabbed the finger drilling a hole between his pecs and tugged her hard enough that she lost her balance and fell against him.
     He wrapped an arm around her waist, entangling a hand in her wet hair.
     She went still as stone and stared into his eyes. And then lowered her gaze to his mouth.
     Yeah, they were in sync there. Suddenly he couldn’t breathe. Hers caught audibly in her throat, a good sign, he decided. Maybe she wouldn’t knee him in the balls. Testing the waters, he grazed her jawline with his teeth.
     She shivered.
     Then he slid his mouth to the very corner of hers and was rewarded by the clutch of her hands on his shirt. Having her hold on to him like this, like he was her only anchor, sent a bolt of lust straight through him. “Leah,” he murmured, hearing the surprise in his own voice, feeling the heat course through him as he finally—God, finally—covered her mouth with his.
     Her lips parted for him eagerly, and he groaned, drowning in the erotic collision of her hot tongue and chilled, wet body.
     Serious trouble. He was in serious trouble.

"Count on Jill Shalvis for a witty, steamy, unputdownable love story." -- Robyn Carr, New York Times bestselling author of Harvest Moon
THERE'S NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING
After dropping out of pastry school and messing up her big break on a reality cooking show, Leah Sullivan needs to accomplish something in her life. But when she returns home to Lucky Harbor, she finds herself distracted by her best friend, Jack Harper. In an effort to cheer up Jack's ailing mother, Dee, Leah tells a little fib - that she and Jack are more than just friends. Soon pretending to be hot-and-heavy with this hunky firefighter feels too real to handle . . .
No-strings attachments suit Jack just fine - perfect for keeping the risk of heartbreak away. But as Jack and Leah break every one of their "just friends" rules, he longs to turn their pretend relationship into something permanent. Do best friends know too much about each other to risk falling in love? Or will Jack and Leah discover something new about each other in a little town called Lucky Harbor?

Review:
Leah had a rough childhood with a father who insisted on perfection and belittled her every effort saying she would always fail. As soon as she was old enough Leah got away. She did well in college but dropped out her last semester. She repeated the performance at chef school, fulfilling the predictions that she couldn’t finish anything.

Now Leah has come home to take care of her grandmother’s bakery while her grandmother recovers. The whole town is watching her as she has been the sweetheart of a cooking competition show. Leah is until contract not to reveal the final outcome but everyone expects her to win. She figures that her grandmother will recover and she will escape town before the finale airs.

Now that Leah is home she can spend time with her best friend and confidant, Jack. Jack is a handsome fire chief being chased by most of the women in town. When they were graduating high school Jack almost convinced Leah to be more than friends but just when he was sure they would be together Leah disappeared. Jack’s mother is fighting cancer and in an effort to cheer her Leah announces that she and Jack are dating. This is news to Jack who isn’t sure he wants to risk his emotions with Leah again.

Even though they fight acknowledging their true feelings they can’t resist their passion. Now Leah and Jack dance around each other trying to decide if they should admit that their pretend romance is real.

I really liked these two characters.  Poor Leah has to overcome the failure complex that was instilled by her abusive father. Jack has to be willing to risk changing his job and risk giving his heart. A large part of the book is filled with intimate, sexual encounters. Although I generally prefer more substance than intimate encounters I still enjoyed the conflict and the story beyond the passion as I waited to see how the pair would resolve their situation. This read quickly and I did enjoy it. Although it is part of a series this reads fine as a stand along.

Book Description
Release date: May 28, 2013 | Series: Lucky Harbor
Ali Winters is not having a good day. Her boyfriend left her, everyone in town thinks she's a thief, and now she's about to be kicked out of her home. Her only shot at keeping a roof over her head and clearing her name is to beg for help from a police detective who's as sexy as he is stern....

After a high-profile case goes wrong, Luke Hanover returns to his hometown for some peace and quiet. Instead he finds a bombshell brunette in a heap of trouble. As he helps Ali put her world back together, the pieces of Luke's own life finally seem to fall into place. Is this the start of a sizzling fling? Or are Luke and Ali on the brink of something big in a little town called Lucky Harbor?

Review:
Ali is a very vibrant, upbeat person. She comes from a household where her mother went from boyfriend to boyfriend but she always protected her two daughters and tried to look on the bright side of things. Ali had become the responsible one, helping with finances.  She moved to Lucky Harbor with the hope of building a new life for herself.  She loves working as the clerical and floral assistant in the town’s florist and she has lots of great ideas if only her boss would let her use them.

Ali was dating, then living with the charismatic town manager. He had been working long hours and it had been several months since they shared a bedroom but she still considered him her boyfriend until she discovered him ‘partying’ with another girl in his office after an important town event. She returns home to find he has vacated and she gets a text from him that the lease has expired and she has to move out that day.

Ali is in the kitchen in her under garments when she is surprised by an intruder. It turns out to be Luke who is the owner/landlord. He has come home expecting an empty house and seeking refuge and escape from a high profile murder case.  Instead he is faced with a vibrant, package of determined young lady. Ali assures him she will be out in a few days and in the meantime she will protect him from the intruding calls and visits from reporters.

Before Ali can find other lodgings she becomes the primary suspect in the theft of a suitcase of fifty thousand dollars of town money. Luke doesn’t want to become involved but his protective instincts have already kicked into gear.

I loved these two characters! Ali is so upbeat and positive that she buoys those around her, including the tired and brooding Luke. Luke is all protective cop and ‘hero’ material. It is fun to read their fun dialogue and their attempts to resist the irresistible zing between them! Ali teaches crafts to the senior set, including Luke’s estranged step-grandfather. These folks and some other crazy characters add to the emotional trauma as Luke and Ali try to solve the mystery which is clearly some type of frame-up. Some of the prior characters of other Lucky Harbor books are mentioned although they aren’t a big part.

The characters are sweet and loveable, the plot is fun and the writing is easy. Jill Shalvis does a lovely job of keeping the reading upbeat and fun.

Book Description
Publication Date: May 22, 2012 | Series: A Lucky Harbor Novel (Book 4)
Mallory Quinn has had enough of playing it safe. As a nurse and devoted daughter, she takes care of everyone but herself. And as the local good girl, she's expected to date Mr. Right. But for once, she'd like to take a risk on Mr. Wrong. And who could be more wrong than Ty Garrison? The mysterious new guy in town has made it clear that he's only passing through, which suits Mallory just fine. Besides, his lean, hard body and sexy smile will give her plenty to remember once he's gone . . .
For the first time in his life, Ty can't bear to leave. Helping this sexy seductress-in-training walk on the wild side is making him desire things he shouldn?t?including leaving the military for good. As their just-for-fun fling becomes something more, Mallory and Ty wonder if they could really be this lucky in love. After all . . . anything can happen in a town called Lucky Harbor.

Review:
Mallory has always been the “good girl.”  Even more so since she was 16 and her 18 year old sister went off track and died of an overdose. Mallory sees failure to save as her fault as she continues to try to save everyone around her.  Her “chocoholic”  friends, Amy and Grace, encourage Mallory to break out and take a walk on the wild side. They begin with a list of Mr. Wrongs and end up with a prime candidate in the“mysterious cute guy” as identified on the town’s facebook page.

Ty Garrison is a former Seal, private sector, dangerous missions guy. Of course no one in town knows that background except for the Doctor who is monitoring his recovery from the injuries that have Ty out of action. The town folks see him as mysterious and a seriously fine auto mechanic.

Mallory wheedles a date out of Ty while he is suffering a concussion from a storm. Mallory is in charge of the hospital auction designed to raise money for a community clinic that she is set on getting funding and approval for. She figures Ty has stood her up until he shows up and realizes he is late for a date he didn’t remember. That’s okay... he is willing to help out as long as Mallory is willing to accept it’s a one night deal with “no regrets.”  Mallory agrees but they soon find that a one night fling isn’t enough for either of them.

Mallory knows she shouldn’t fall for the guy who is just waiting to leave town. Ty doesn’t want to hurt her but he can’t seem to pull himself away, even when he finally gets cleared to return to work. By then Ty is invested in Mallory and the town. But that isn’t his thing...he needs to get back to the adrenaline of his dangerous job. Or is that where he really belongs now that Mallory has broken through his shell and shown him changes that could be?

These two are really great characters. Everyone in town, including her mom, her bosses and the angry, elderly, sour biddy (albeit secretly), loves Mallory. They are all concerned about her feelings and “relationship” with the “mysterious cute guy.” And of course there are few secrets in a town like Lucky Harbor.  Ty is actually a very nice guy hiding in a “bad boy” persona. It is part of his sexy, mysterious aura.

The romance plot isn't exactly new but it is delivered with charm, lots of humor and plenty of anticipation waiting to discover when and how the couple will get together. The cheerful writing flows quickly and I loved the chocolate quotes at the beginning of each chapter. This is a warm, fun start to a new trilogy by Ms. Shalvis and can easily be read as a standalone if you have not read the first trilogy. I admit that I was a bit disappointed that the earlier characters were only mere mentions as I would have liked to see more of them. It seems to me if you want a charming, fun and sexy (but not graphic) read you can’t go wrong with a Lucky Harbor Novel.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some fine, fun quotes to ponder:
    Somehow in spite of himself and his reclusiveness, he'd managed to find celebrity status in this crazy-ass, one-horse town, and even worse, there was Mallory, wanting him to take her for a walk on the wild side. Page 89.
    At some point, when he'd been busy resenting like hell this slow-paced, sleepy little town and everyone in it, something had happened.
Book Description
Series: A Lucky Harbor Novel | Publication Date: December 1, 2011
Breaking rules and breaking hearts
Free-spirited Chloe lives life on the edge. Unlike her soon-to-be married sisters, she isn't ready to settle into a quiet life running their family's newly renovated inn. But soon her love of trouble--and trouble with love-draws the attention of the very stern, very sexy sheriff who'd like nothing better than to tame her wild ways.
Suddenly Chloe can't take a misstep without the sheriff hot on her heels. His rugged swagger and his enigmatic smile are enough to make a girl beg to be handcuffed. For the first time, instead of avoiding the law, Chloe dreams of surrender. Can this rebel find a way to keep the peace with the straitlaced sheriff? Or will Chloe's colorful past keep her from a love that lasts . . . and the safe haven she truly wants in a town called Lucky Harbor?
Review: The third story in the Lucky Harbor series.
Chloe is the “baby” sister to sophisticated and proper Tara and nurturing, conciliatory Maddie. Chloe is considered the wild child like their mother. She was raised on the road with her free spirited mother following in the path of Grateful Dead concerts. Although she has chipped in to help the girls renovate and manage the family inn, they don’t expect that she will stay. She is mostly responsible for the grunt cleaning jobs and manning the desk now that Tara and Maddie are mostly living with their boyfriends. Chloe makes her own line of skin care and health remedies and makes runs into the city to host spa days. She is trying to grow and show everyone that she can be more responsible. When she comes up with a new idea to contribute to the Inn she has to overcome the doubt and gain the support of her sisters.
Chloe has a big heart and caring soul too. She spends time with her friend Lance who struggles with CF. The two tend to get into trouble - like sneaking out to rescue pit bulls.
Sheriff Sawyer appears to be a straight-laced and toe the line, eagle scout type of guy. He actually is trying to prove himself in a town that knew him as a teen trouble maker. His tries to help his stubborn father even when he rebukes the help and always reminds Sawyer what a disappointment he was.
When Sawyer realizes that Chloe has been illegally rescuing dogs he decides he better keep a closer eye on her. For the past year it has seemed that they hated each other but really there is clear chemical attraction and friction. Chloe figures she is too wild for him and he doesn’t think her reputation for trouble will mix with his proper image. But love has other thoughts for both of them!
I liked the characters very much. They are good opposites who have more in common than they realize. Their relationship sizzles with sexual tension and some of the thought patterns and scenes are quite fun. I was feeling that the sexual issues were overshadowing the story but by midway the plot settled in so that the sexy romance blended well with the family drama and personal growth that are a big part of the story.  Chloe and Sawyer have to deal with Chloe's asthma problems too which adds another interesting element to the story.  I enjoyed the story as entertaining by the time I finished.
If you like sizzling romance, emotional obstacles, family drama and personal growth, served up with an easy writing style and plenty of humor, this is a read, series and an author you should try.  You can check out my review of Simply Irresistible, Maddie's story.
Don't miss a chance to win one of 3 copies in the Giveaway!
Giveaway - Five Copies of Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis
If you are ready for a quick, fun, happy read this book will hit the spot!
Simply Irresistible (A Lucky Harbor Novel) by Jill Shalvis
Here is a flavor of the Author's humor and YES - this means there will be more books, and hunky guys, for Tara and Chloe!
 "The Dish" for Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis
 When I started this series about three estranged sisters who get stuck together running a beach resort, I decided I was out of my mind.  I don’t have sisters.  I have a brother, and we like each other just fine.  Then at the dinner table that very night, my three teenage heathens started bickering and fighting, and I just stared at them in awe and wonder.
I had my fodder!  “Keep fighting,” I told them -- much to their utter shock, since I’ve spent the past fifteen years begging them to get along.
After that night, it was a piece of cake to write the sisters — Maddie, Tara, and Chloe — their claws barely sheathed, with resentment and affection vying for space.
So then all that I had left to do was find the three sexy guys who could handle them.
It just so happened that, at the time, my neighbor was having an addition put on her house.  For six glorious weeks, there were a bunch of guys hanging off the roof and the walls, in perfect line of sight of my office.
Which is really my deck.  It’s a wonder I got any work done at all.
So I sat in the sun and wrote while in the background cute, young, sweaty guys hammered, and sawed, and in general, made my day.
And on some days, they even took off their shirts.  Those were my favorite days of all.  But I digress …
I was working very hard, planning out conflicts and plot pacing and trying to nail down my hero.  And given what I was looking at for inspiration, it shouldn’t be any surprise at all that the hero for this first book in the Lucky Harbor series, SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE, turned out to be a master carpenter.
And a very sexy one at that.
I’m actually writing book two right now.  I keep going out on the deck, sitting and patiently waiting, but my neighbor hasn’t hired any more sexy carpenters.  Darn it.
Perhaps I need a new addition myself!
Book Review: Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis
This is a wonderfully charming and delightful read!
Simply Irresistible (A Lucky Harbor Novel) by Jill Shalvis
  • Mass Market Paperback: 336 pages
  • Publisher: Forever; 1 Original edition (October 1, 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 044657161X
  • ISBN-13: 978-0446571616
Genre: Contemporary Romance
My Rating: 5.0 of 5.0
In one fell swoop, Maddie loses her boyfriend (her decision) and her job (so not her decision). But rather than drowning her sorrows in bags of potato chips, Maddie leaves L.A. to claim the inheritance left by her free-spirited mother-a ramshackle inn nestled in the little coastal town of Lucky Harbor, Washington.
Starting over won't be easy. Yet Maddie sees the potential for a new home and a new career-if only she can convince her two half-sisters to join her in the adventure. But convincing Tara and Chloe will be difficult because the inn needs a big makeover too.
The contractor Maddie hires is a tall, dark-haired hottie whose eyes-and mouth-are making it hard for her to remember that she's sworn off men. Even harder will be Maddie's struggles to overcome the past, though she's about to discover that there's no better place to call home than Lucky Harbor.
Review: I found this story to be a true delight and just what I needed for a lift up at the time!
This story had a light and easy tone with good humor from the very first. There is a quote to start each chapter - I think I’ve mentioned before that I really like those. The first quote is: “I chose the path less traveled, but only because I was lost. Carry a map.” It took a few pages before I realized who the author of the quotes was and later in the book you learn where the quotes came from and that is part of the fun of the story.
Maddie is a great character. Sweet and quick witted if a bit less than confident at this stage of her life. She so needs a new start and really wants to make a go of the rundown inn. But she has to convince her sisters to help her remodel enough to try to make a go of it. Sophisticated Tara claims that she has a husband and an important job to get back to so she doesn’t want to jump into renovations. Wild spirited Chloe has no money, has allergies to dust and paint (and work in general?) and tends to be footloose, so she isn’t inclined to commit to the project. However, since the place will sell easier if some basic work is done, they agree to get a quote from a local contractor.
The contractor turns out to be the hunk on the motorcycle that Maddie tried to run off the road coming into town. Then she knocked his bike over on her way to visit the local bar her first night in town. Jax doesn’t seem to mind her klutziness but rather immediately falls for her sweet charms. And I can tell you, if I didn’t have my own handy workman, sweet husband of 25 years, I would really want a Jax!!
Lucky Harbor seems to be a rather cool setting with fun establishments like The Love Shack Bar and the Eat Me Café. It may be cold in temperature but that gives cause to get cozy and warm with flirtatious romance. As much as Jax is drawn to Maddie he is keeping some secrets that are going to cause some hot trouble when revealed.
The writing has an easy flow and connections and secrets are revealed bit by bit. Also remember the quotes I mentioned in the beginning of this review? They gave me a new philosophy: "Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late." Don't I wish!
I really enjoyed this fun, light romance. I am hoping there will be more stories from Ms. Shalvis for Lucky Harbor and especially for Tara, Chloe and Jax’s friends bartender/owner, Ford and the local law officer, Sawyer.  Treat yourself to a joyful read by getting this book!
