Review:
Squid and Lynn have begun their trip east across Central Territory to the lands beyond the fence. Squid is the boy of prophesy and Lynn is his friend who has been banished and committed herself to traveling with him even though she doesn’t believe. The High Priestess has seized control of the city of Alice and the territory. She has made plans to mis-direct Squid and Lynn to her ally, the Black Sisters at the edge of the fence.

Squid and Lynn secured a ride inside a freighter and are surprised when Nim breaks into their container. Nim is a Nomad boy who lost his twin sister to a ghoul attack. He chose to journey to the lands beyond to find the Storm Man. The nomadic legend holds that the Storm Man can defeat the ghoul hordes. The three young people band together to continue their quest although Squid becomes jealous and remote as Lynn and Nim become closer.

As the trio of youth try to evade a pirate attack, two strange men, Stix and Stownes, arrive suddenly, appearing to attack Squid. It takes a bit of time to realize their true purpose. Lynn meets her stepbrother, Melbourne, with the pirates and challenges him to shake off his cowardice. The trio travel on with unexpected help, facing sandstorm and ghoul horde before they reach the outer fence. Once they pass the fence, they quickly face new enemies.

Finally Squid and Nim battle their way to arrive at the City of Smoke. There they find surprises and the vaccine that might help safe the people. But they do not know how to use it and the ghoul horde waits outside the doors where they must exit to return to the city.

The story is fast paced with plenty of action and, as in the first book, A Town Called Dust: The Territory 1, the characters are engaging. The story is so much more than just a zombie battle. I liked the different views being shared from the perspectives of wealth (Lynn), poverty (Squid) and respecters of nature (Nim). There are many other human elements - jealousy, greed, power, cowardice, dedication, love, loyalty and courage - that are woven throughout the story. Sad to say, the ending is a complete cliff hanger. Still, this is fast paced entertainment with strong character and story beyond the zombie threat. I recommend the story to those who enjoy strong, entertaining, action sci fi.

Review:
Ten years ago “The Calamity” struck earth in the form of a flash in the sky which left certain men and women with superhuman powers. Normal people hope that these superhumans, called Epics, will help the world. Unfortunately the super power gifts that make them strong also corrupt them by increasing their drive to rule over others, usually in tyranny and terror.

David was only eight when he saw his first two Epics. He witnessed his own father, as well as everyone else in the bank, ruthlessly struck down by Steelheart. But David saw something that no one else saw – he saw Steelheart bleed. David became the sole survivor and he lived planning his revenge. David spent the next ten years studying the strengths and weaknesses of every Epic. He also studied the skills of the Reckoners, the underground rebel group - the only ones- who dare to challenge the Epics.

David manages to get into a rebellion skirmish so he can join the Reckoners. The rebellion team isn’t looking for new recruits who just pop up. Initially they don’t know if they can trust David but slowly he convinces them that he has a wealth of knowledge, particularly knowing the vulnerabilities of the Epics, that will help the Reckoners in their battles.

Each of the Reckoners has a particular battle skill. Slowly they share their skills with David as he shares his knowledge with them. They hide in unfinished tunnels below Newcago (what is left of Chicago) as they pull together a plan to call out Steelheart. They have to get him face to face to test the several theories they have as to his vulnerability.

There is plenty of action in this story which is very reminiscent of a comic book with the good guys battling the evil super villains. The leader of the Reckoners, "Prof", is an older fellow with mysterious wisdom and inventions. There is a minor romantic element as David crushes on one of his teammates even though she tends to scorn his youthful geekiness. I enjoyed the characters, the fast-paced action and the clever plot twists. I found the total package very entertaining and will want to read more by this author. (I have the Mistborn trilogy and just have to decide if I will read those next or get more in the Reckoner series.) I recommend this to young, and older, adult readers who enjoy comic book style action and twists.

Audio Notes: This was an excellent listen. MacLeod Andrews does a super job capturing the different personalities both human and Epic. His narration made the story come alive for me and I could almost picture it as a comic book action strip. If you are a sci fi action reader who enjoys audio I highly recommend this in audio for strong entertainment.

This was from 2013 in my Audible library. This qualifies for my Audiobook challenge as well as being part of my TBR reading.

Review:
Squid is a teen who lives and works on his Uncle’s farm located on the outskirts of a Town called Dust. Although Squid is a farm hand he isn’t strong and he’s never been very adept with his hands. Instead, Squid is smart and good with numbers. He has nothing of his own except a key that he treasures that was supposedly left by his mother.

There is an outer fence that has separated mankind from the ghouls for many years. A breach of the fence allows hordes of the undead to slowly stumble their way towards the civilized towns. This brings the defensive troops, Diggers, to Dust. A young Captain spots Squid and senses good qualities in him. Squid is conscripted into service to his surprise and over his Uncle’s objection.

Squid begins training and makes a friend in Max who protects him from being bullied by other recruits. Max is surprisingly good at sword fighting and picks up the military training quickly. But Max hides a major secret.

Lynn is the daughter of a famous Colonel. She has always wanted to be a Digger but women are not allowed in the troops. Instead, she is expected to become a Sister in the ruling religious order. When a tragic event pushes Lynn toward this unwanted fate she escapes and, in disguise, joins the Digger training forces.

Lynn and Squid help each other and eventually face battle together. There is something special about the two that they do not realize, but others do. The territory commander wants to use them but the Church Mother fears a prophesy surrounding them. She seeks to remove them rather than have that prophesy fulfilled.

I don’t read a lot of zombie stories but I’m glad I picked this up. The story focuses primarily on the human characters with intrigue and danger beyond the undead. The world building includes dirigibles, steamcycles and other steam elements that I liked. The characters are well developed and I was engaged by the personalities of Squid and Lynn and the obstacles they faced. There are other secondary characters, including Lynn’s foster brother, Melbourne, who apparently have a part yet to play.

I recommend this to those who like fantasy adventure – even with ghouls. I found the whole package entertaining and look forward to continuing the adventure in book two, A City Called Smoke: The Territory 2.

James Drake was a loyal Captain commanding the Royal Navy warship, HMS Ajax, on a planet that draws similarities to earth. Drake and his crew were victorious in a hard fought battle against the alien Hroom. When the battle was done the Captain was found guilty of shooting down an innocent merchant ship and headed to a prison planet. His first mate and a good number of his crew are convinced Drake was framed. They arrange a rescue and mutiny in his own ship. Drake is unhappy with the rescue and is prepared to turn himself in to his old friend, Rutherford, Captain of a sister ship. But Drake learns more facts that don’t make sense, including the fact that his valued pilot, a Hroom, has been turned into an addicted sugar eater who is now destined to be a slave on a sugar plantation. Drake struggles with the desire to save his friends and events tumble until he and the crew end up on the run with the Ajax.

Drake ends up seeking help within a planet cluster of pirates and smugglers. He has always been loyal to the admiralty and hates the position he is in. I quickly learned to like Drake and his dedicated crew members. They are a mixed crew and I was reminded of the band of friends that made up the crew in the movie/series Firefly. They are brave, bold and daring and there is lots of fast paced action, space chases and battles, that kept me thoroughly engaged. The story is very well written and the combination of characters, plot intrigue and action make this wonderful entertainment. I enjoyed several books from the Righteous Series by this author and was glad to try this Sci Fi thriller when he offered it. I was delighted to discover the beginning of another good series in a totally different genre. I highly recommend this to sci fi adventure lovers and those who enjoy fast paced entertainment. I am looking forward to the next book in the series!

Review:
Alana is one of few females left in the Cantati forces. Her father is the Commander of the forces and she has become a fierce warrior, a Platoon leader. Unfortunately she still can’t seem to win his love or approval. Now the council has issued a decree that Alana is to leave the forces and become a breeder. They have even assigned her mate, Cade, a hulking brute whom she knows can be cruel. Alana is dismayed that she no longer controls her own destiny.

Alana’s first attempt to escape fails and she is confined to her rooms under the guard of one of her own team members, Quinten. He volunteers to intervene as a prior mate selection. Together they break the rules again by sneaking out to help in an unexpected demon attack. Alana returns to her father to face a furious council. They would sentence her but it has become apparent that her skills are needed to face the enemy that is threatening the compound.

This is a good prequel that fills in the background for Alana’s circumstances before the Anointed: The Cantati Chronicles, the first full book in the series. The author uses the mating issues to present some serious eye-candy descriptions. I enjoyed the action and getting to know and understand a little more of Alana’s personality and the world she comes from. I do recommend reading this prequel to start the series.

Review:
Crocker is a Navy Seal team leader who likes to ‘get the job done’ with minimal mess and minimal collateral damage. He and his team are sent into a covert op to take out Zaman, an al-Qaeda terrorist. They destroy the dwelling target thinking they have accomplished the mission. There are two problems though and Crocker takes them both personally. First, a young girl is killed in the blast. Second, it appears that the primary target was allowed to exit the building in disguise. Although unavoidable, these errors still impact Crocker’s confidence, not to mention the fact that his superiors don’t want to give him a second chance to get Zaman.

Crocker has a thin clue to pursue and, unlike the powers who spend time disputing policies, Croker is a man who takes action. While waiting for more information Crocker and his team head to climb the dangerous mountain of Concordia in Pakistan. The climb keeps the teams’ skills sharp and also provides them cover to be in the country. Before beginning the climb Crocker is asked to help track down a daughter of an important Norwegian official who has gone missing. Crocker’s gut tells him that there is a connection between Zaman and the slave traders who have been taking beautiful blonde girls to deliver them to a ruthless sheikh.

There is plenty of action that keeps this moving at a fast pace. Although the climb is a little off track, I really enjoyed the action, the danger and the excitement of the climb as well as the danger of the hunt for the kidnappers. Crocker is a strong, honorable and steady character. The other team members are not deeply developed although each has their own skills and foibles.

Author Mann creates a reasonably realistic plot with engaging action and manages to convey some philosophical statements along the way. Caution: there is some bad language and, needless to say, violence. I would gladly read more from this author and more in this series.

Review:
The first portion of this book gives history and character re-cap to familiarize those who don’t know the series or to refresh others. There are personal snippets to bring some of the major characters to the forefront. Then the battle action begins in force, even as some of the strategy gets lost to zealous, mixed motives.

The battles of Captain Reddy and the Grand Alliance continue on three fields in thes latest installment of this wonderful alternate world series. General Pete Alden faces off with the Grik General Halick, in India. The two military leaders are beginning to respect each other as they realize they can continue to fight to decimate each others’ armies or they can step apart and regroup for another day.

British High Admiral Jenks is leading the Imperial troops, with Orrin Reddy’s “Nancys” airteam, in the eastern front battle against the Dominion. Although they are positioning themselves well in Guayak, New Granada Province, they have no real idea of the Dominion forces that are grouping in the Atlantic.

Meanwhile Captain Reddy, his naval forces and many of the Lemurian leaders and troops begin their raid against the Grik on their own home front in Madagascar. Unfortunately, not all the leaders had the same acknowledged goals and the raid turns into a full on assault. The indomitable Dennis Silva takes a small band to sneak into the Grik fortress to capture the Celestial Mother. Several characters who have become endeared are killed or injured in this reckless and costly mission.

I totally enjoyed the plot lines, the imagination and progress of the story. The Doms are still a massive threat and The Japanese enemy, Captain Hisashi Kurokawa, is rebuilding after his defeat at the battle at Madras (Storm Surge). Allies are shifting as Kurokawa is set to betray the Grik allies he made when first he came to this world. As this book closes a new enemy emerges in the form of Italian fascists. I look forward to learning what new adventures and dangers the characters will face in the next book.

Audio Notes: I truly enjoy the narration by William Dufris. He brings the characters alive and helps me get emerged into the world of the Destroyermen. I am glad I have been enjoying this series in audio and I highly recommend it.

I bought this with my Audible subscription so I could continue the adventures.

Review:
The world is under attack by an alien army known as Mimics. Their numbers are overwhelming and, in addition to destruction in battle, they poison the waters and earth causing complete devastation to wipe out earth’s inhabitants and prepare the land for Mimic settlement.

Keiji is just a teenager with no real future when he decides to join the battle. He is one of many raw recruits who are used more as fodder while the leaders try to figure out how to slow, much less stop the invasion. Keiji thinks he is prepared for battle but something goes wrong on the unit’s very first engagement. Although they are told the battle will be peripheral it turns out they meet the enemy head on. As Keiji realizes others around him are dying he forges into the fray to strike out at the foe. Keiji kills an enemy warrior but is mortally wounded. As he is struggling with his own death, he sees the beautiful female soldier, Rita, known as the Full Metal Bitch. She has had unprecedented success in battle and is revered as a killing machine. She tries to sooth Keiji as he is dying.

The next morning Keiji awakens in his bunk and thinks that he has dreamed the previous battle and encounters. He soon learns that he has been caught in a time loop living the day before and the day of battle over and over. At first he despairs but then he decides to use the days to train himself more fully in hopes that he can ultimately save his team, if not the base and maybe the world.

I enjoyed the fast paced action and of course the “Goundhog Day” irony of learning to live through repeating days. Through the repeated days the reader/listener learns of Keiji's friendships within his unit as well as his respect for his trainers and command leaders. The views of his squadron add  interest. I especially liked the repeated two day meeting and development of friendship with Rita. There is a twist that is hinted at and revealed at the end.

There is graphic killing that is not suitable for everyone. As the back cover of the CD says: Live, Die, Repeat. The only drawback for me was the harsh, repeated foul words. When used it is repeated in succession. Fortunately it is not throughout the book so you can get to the story beyond the bad language.

Audio Notes: It was a little strange that the narrator was not a younger voice and did not attempt to use a Japanese accent to match the hero. None the less, Mike Martindale does a good job conveying the action and intensity of the story. Listening probably made it easier to get beyond the foul words and definitely made it read faster than a print copy.

I think my husband will like the movie. He doesn't read but says he will "wait for the movie."

Review:
Atticus reluctantly helped the Vampire, Leif, kill Thor and other norse gods and beings in the battle (see Hammered). Now the Norse are out to get him and Atticus knows his days are numbered unless he can trick them into thinking he is dead. He enlists the aid of the god of Tricksters, Coyote. Of course any deal with Coyote comes with a tradeoff.

Coyote has announced that Atticus needs to help him re-establish a gold mine to help his Navaho tribe. Atticus soon learns the task is much more complicated than working with the local ground elemental. It appears that Atticus will have to kill some very vicious shape-shifters who steal human, as well as animal, skins.

Atticus has to fend off attacks from another goddess as well as try to disengage himself from Leif who claims he needs Atticus’ help to win back the vampire’s territory. Things are just never simple in Atticus’s world.

This is the fourth book of an engaging series. We learn a little more of Atticus’ history as we wonder about the relationship between him and his apprentis, Granuaile. I enjoyed the flashback on the death arrangements that had to be sufficient to convince local authorities, some who had targetted Atticus. There is plenty of action although the final attack in this one is a bit over the edge far-fetched. The telepathic dialogue and friendship between Atticus and his faithful Irish wolfhound, Oberon, made this installment even more fun for me. I recommend this series to those looking an unusal hero with lots of action and humor to entertain the reader.

Audio Notes: Luke Daniels continues to add to this series with his wonderful narration. He successfully manages different voices to fit the characters and his portrayal of Oberon is lol fun. If you enjoy action and fun audios, I recommend you try this series.

Review:
Dean Watters is a special forces Captain who is focused, dedicated and ‘married’ to his Raptor team. They are stationed in Afghan where they try to help the local people when able and address military issues when needed. His team is quick to move in when they see smoke down the road. They arrive to discover that a missionary school has been attacked by terrorists. Dean meets Zahrah Zarrick, a beautiful American who is a missionary teacher to the children.

Zahrah’s father is a well known General who would prefer she be safe in America. But Zahrah feels compelled to teach the children, particularly the girls, of her mother’s home country so they will not be restricted as her mother was. Although teaching is Zahrah’s vocation, her studied expertise from college is in quantum cryptology or data encoding in computers. This makes Zahrah a target for cyber terrorists who want her skills to hack into a stolen military computer to gain national security secrets.

Dean becomes Zahrah’s protector, unofficially appointed by her father, and by his own nature. Dean tries to convince Zahrah to return to America but Zahrah knows her true protector is God.  She believes He has a plan that involves her staying where she is. Will Zahrah’s faith sustain her when she is kidnapped, tortured and threatened to use her skills? Can Dean go in to rescue Zahrah knowing he will face his worst fears of being tortured and watching an innocent woman be tortured, as he did ten years before?

Somewhere in the mountains there is a man who has hacked into the military base and is watching every move Raptor team makes. Dean is frustrated as it becomes clear that someone knows their plans and is always one step ahead of the team. This created tension and interest but I was frustrated that it took quite some time to even realize there was a ‘mole’. This enemy remains an unknown even at the end of the book.

I really enjoyed the fast paced action of the story and the camaraderie of the team members. I appreciated that there was no foul language and I loved the strong faith portrayed in Zahrah. The torture scenes are realistically harsh. I recommend this to readers who love action, danger and a clean romance of integrity and spirit with no need for overt sex. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Review:
Monster Hunter Owen and his team have gone to a hotel after a minor assignment in Mexico. While relaxing Owen is visited by a man who is a monster in the dark and weakened by the light. Owen manages to escape by jumping out the window only to be confronted by an army of zombies swarming the resort. Owen is able to eliminate the threat, with some late help from his team, only to be arrested for mass murder.

Agents Myers and Franks of the government Monster Bureau show up to rescue Owen. They explain that the man after Owen is a fanatical necromancer known as the Shadow Man. He leads an evil cult, known as the Condition, who are trying to capture Owen and deliver him to Owen’s enemies, the Old Ones. So Agent Franks is appointed as Owen’s bodyguard.

Owen is confined to the grounds of Monster Hunter International as they try to locate the Condition. Harbinger, head of the Hunters, believes that the grounds are warded from monsters and completely secure. But nothing is secure if traitors infiltrate MHI.

Thanks to a shard that Vampire Suzanne forced on Owen, he has developed the capability to mind read flash backs when he touches people. Through flashbacks the reader/listener learns more of the history of several characters and MHI. We also meet Owen’s family as the Shadow Man goes after them to draw out Owen.

I enjoy the great action and fun tension created by the rivalries. There are losses that bring sadness and victories that bring joy. I am anxious to listen to more.

Audio Notes: Oliver Wyman does a wonderful job of portraying the voices, emotions and excitement. He makes this a fun, entertaining series to listen to.

Alana is from the future where the remaining humans, the Cantati, struggle to survive as they hunt down demons who have overrun the earth. Alana grew up learning more about battling foes than about the past history of humans. Now a new, stronger and smarter type of demon has broken into the Cantati stronghold and Alana watches in dismay as her friends and comrades are torn apart. As the demons break into the room where her father has taken her, he tells her that she has to travel back in time to stop the event that allowed the demons to enter the human dimension.

Unfortunately the time travel misses the mark and brings her back later than it was supposed to. Not only does she have less time to complete her mission but the signs she was to follow have already passed. She is scrambling to research rare book treatises in an attempt to decipher the few clues she still has but finds herself being attacked by robed men. As she battles attackers Alana catches the eye of Gaelen who is also fighting demons but has his own mission that is not too clear. Eventually Gaelen steps in to help Alana and she is surprised to discover someone, not necessarily a human, who fights as well as she does. Who is he and what are his motives?

Gaelen insists that Alana team up with him as they are seeking the same artifacts. But they don’t trust each other and hinder themselves by refusing to share the information they have. Eventually they uncover some of each other’s secrets but Alana is sure that Gaelen is still holding back.

Gaelen and Alana are dodging and hiding from an evil order of priests that want to help the demons take over. Alana is distressed to learn that she is the cause of the apocalypse as it is her blood that the head demon needs to open the gates to earth. Her whole mission fails unless she is killed before the demons catch her. Can she trust Gaelen or is he part of a trap to capture her?

Alana is a great warrior heroine - strong but flawed and vulnerable in her youth, confusion and solitary existence. Gaelen is mysterious and sexy. Phinn is another mysterious man, a type of magician, who gives aid to Alana.

This intense story is told in first person with just a touch of chagrin. There is a terrific plot and great suspense that grabbed my attention from the outset and never disappointed. The chemistry between Gaelen and Alana sizzles but the romance is secondary to the full blown action and danger. The only draw back is that Gaelen’s secrets and connections are a little difficult to unravel. Still this is a truly engaging read and I look forward to more action and adventure as the series develops.

Review:
Two WWII American destroyermen are transferred to an alternate world where they discover new species. They form an Alliance with the Lemurians, a cat-monkey like race, against the the fierce Grik, a lizard like species who eat their enemies.

In this eighth installment there are numerous battles going on at many locations. General Alden is still pinned down and waiting for relief in Indiaa. Japanese General Niwa has shared tactical strategy with Grik Hige Halik and they are making progress in their battles. But the madman Japanese Commander, Kurokawa, using the Griks as tools, isn’t seeking to help the Grik in their fights. Instead he hopes to lure the American and Alliance into battle at Maa-ni-la where he plans to annihilate them with the new ships.

Reddy and his Allies have been busy building new planes and new ships. Although a few troops are sent on individual missions the majority of the forces are being readied to face Kurolawa and the Grik.

Imperial Commodore Jenks is planning the battles in the East against the Holy Dominion threat. Silva and others are trekking through jungles seeking other species of Grik that may be friendly like Laurence. There are a few new groups that are discovered and agree to get involved including some Jaguar warriors, another species of superlizards being led by an American and unexplained spies. There is also a new group that is making attempts to align with Kurokawa and the Grik.

This series is full of action and good character development. I enjoy the battle strategies and scenes as well as the personal interaction.

Audio Notes: I love listening to this series. Dufris' narration has character distinction and scene excitement. It is effective to help me get wrapped up in and lost in the story.

I am really enjoying the continuing adventures in this series. This book was from my own Audible library.

Review:
Jaspar has a wonderful life with her important husband who is the Secretary of the Treasury, and their two children. One moment she is playing an afternoon ball game with the kids and the next the children have disappeared and she learns her husband is presumed dead in a plane crash. The press begins to accuse Trevor of manipulating financial markets for personal gain. She knows Trevor was upset about something before he left but he didn’t get the chance to tell her what it was. No one is taking credit for the kidnapping of the children and the only message she gets is that she must remain silent if she wants them to live.

Jaspar finds a thumb drive with information that she believes shows Trevor was suspecting financial patterns by someone in the government. Jaspar seeks help from her long-time family priest and friend to set up a plan of action and arrange to get the information to a financial wizard whom Jaspar trusts, a reclusive American Indian, Chief Bearstrike.

Jaspar is delivered into the hands of Nulandi, an intelligent, sensitive and confidently trained warrior assassin. He travels with his faithful guard dog, Alice, who is trained for Nul’s missions. Nul explains to Jaspar that she must become a warrior to rescue her children. Just as Jaspar’s father used to make the right lure for different fish, Jaspar will be the bait to lure the kidnappers out so they can follow the trail back to the children.

While Jaspar, Nul and Alice race around Europe reeling in killers, Chief Bearstrike meets with another friend, Jason Brontus, a US Attorney. They unravel the financial patterns that have already reaped ill-gotten profits and are setting up to collapse America’s economy. The trail leads to someone with White House connections so they have to be careful who they take the information to.

The story jumps into action and intrigue and never really slows down. There are wonderful, strong characters and great disguises including nuns in habits, a large, old black woman and young boy, a seductress and a race car driver. There is intrigue in plans, traps and near escapes. There is also some raw sexual exposure and rather brutal killing which are not for squeamish readers.

A strong, loving friendship develops between Jaspar and Nulandi that just borders on moving into a physical relationship. As Nul trains Jaspar to be a warrior, she shares the strength of her faith and trust in God with Nul who needs to find that unconditional love and peace for his life. Yet the story includes an interesting mix of Native American beliefs and a certain primal mysticism as well as the Godly faith.

The writing is direct and fast paced with occasional passages of beautiful description interspersed amid the raw danger and killing. I was impressed with the female protagonist being written by a male author. My only disappointments were that the villain who held the children seemed to get off easy after all of his nefarious dealings and the climactic encounter with the 'mastermind' seemed rushed. Still, I really enjoyed the non-stop action and the strong friendships that helped Jaspar on her mission. I highly recommend this entertaining read to those who like a strong, action-packed thriller.

Review:
Book Two picks up where Book One ended, with our characters having arrived home to their families. Now they have to sort how they will proceed to protect their families in their own communities. Very quickly there are those who didn’t prepare seeking handouts from others and threatening to take what they feel they need. Morgan takes a firm stance against those who might try to steal from his family or who threaten them. This creates bad feelings with some of the other residents. The deputy sheriff in the community won’t back Morgan nor make strong decisions. There are moments of coming together but then there are raiders who attack and Morgan puts out a call to Sarge for help.

Thad was pretty isolated with his family and a neighbor who had a nice little farm. He helps out the older farmer who provides food supplies in exchange. Then thieves attack the old man and Thad has to make hard decisions. Next government in the form of a postal worker with a security guard comes knocking on the door to give Thad and his wife assignments in a work camp. Thad has prepared his family to run but the men return before he can get his family out safely. Thad seeks revenge before heading out to join Morgan.

Meanwhile Sarge and the guys are moving from camp to camp as they are hunted by enemies and trying to join up with friendly forces. They finally get assignments to act as raiders when they find the opportunity and they combine that assignment with responding to Morgan’s call for help.

This story really causes one to think how you would respond in similar circumstances. There is great opportunity for fear of neighbors, raiders and the government. There is a fine balance of trying to help while still maintaining a protective base for your own loved ones. There are some brutal and gruesome scenes that some readers might shy away from but I still recommend reading and skimming those sections if the reader is squeamish.

This read very quickly considering the number of pages. I was so engrossed in this episode that I was startled and dismayed when it came to an end with a surprising cliff hanger! I will definitely be picking up the next books in the series!

Emmaline is a pampered daughter of a wealthy man. She has always had maids and has never had to take care of herself or perform simple household chores. She did however survive a terrifying, brutal mining disaster that left her with nightmares. Her wealthy father has hired a ruthless team of mercenaries to protect Emmaline as she is now his most valuable asset. Emmaline doesn’t know it yet but her father has agreed to sell her to a known sex trafficker in satisfaction of all of his debts.

Emmaline became smitten with the head ‘bad boy’ mercenary, Pierce Taggert, as soon as she saw him. He is a ruggedly handsome ex-Lawman with a confident swagger, a foul mouth and oozing sexuality.

Pierce and his men face an unexpected attack and the clues lead back to a double cross by Emmaline’s Father. Pierce takes Emmaline into hiding as he tries to figure out what to do - first to protect her and then what to do with her! He’d like to treat Emmaline as just another paycheck but there is something about her fresh, naive trust and her willing determination to survive that makes him pause. He remembers another young lady who followed his example working in mechanics and war service. He wasn’t there to save her and the loss has left an emptiness filled only with his guilt. Perhaps he can redeem himself by saving Emmaline from those who would use her, including her father.

This is a quick, fast-paced story with action from beginning to end. The setting isn’t completely fleshed out although there is enough to keep it interesting. The strength of the story is in the characters who are likeable and grab your attention, the action packed plot and the vulnerable romance. The strong combination outweighed the bad language and I enjoyed the story reading through it in practically one sitting. I would be interested in trying other works by Ms. Grant. I highly recommend this to readers who enjoy romance and action.

As tension between the Allies and the Imperials mount, Reddy will come to realize that his suspicions are not misplaced - and that a greater danger than the Grik is closer than he ever suspected.

Review:
This is the fourth book in the series continuing the adventures of Captain Matthew Reddy and the Americans from the two destroyers, Walker, and Mahan, who have landed in a parallel world– out of time. Author Anderson, through a smooth process of flashbacks, presents the background information of the existing characters so new readers can identify them. I found the information helpful to refresh my memory without being at all boring. The reader also learns more about the newer characters, particularly the British Empire officer, Jenks, who might turn out to be honorable and the “East Indian Company” man, Billingsly, who clearly is not honorable.

There is quite a bit of interesting history on ship and weapon development. I appreciated how the author combines the more advanced, industrialized 1940s crew with the previous peaceful, but non-industrialized Lemurian culture so they work together to develop new materials and methods to build the assets needed to prepare for the war against the Grik.

The Grik are still in the picture with a few scenes keeping the reader informed on the changes happening with their leadership and machinations. It is interesting to observe the hunter having to deal with the realization that they are becoming the prey to the American and Allied forces.

After reintroducing the players there is plenty of action. Captain Reddy takes Captain Jenks along to Aryall to see the battle preparations and advance engagements against the Grik. Meanwhile, repairs to Walker and other damaged ships is underway at the shipyard at Baalkpan.  Billingsly, left behind with the British ship at Baalkpan, kidnaps the New Britain Princess, Rebecca, along with several others, including Matt’s sweetheart, Lieutenant Sandra Tucker, and the irrepressible, salty, but genius, sailor, Dennis Silva.

Matt returns to Baalkpan to head out in pursuit of Billingsly while Silva ruminates over escape plans for those kidnapped. There is plenty more story to look forward to in the next installment!

Audio Notes: I am utterly impressed with the narration by William Dufris. He portrays the character idiosyncrasies and his reading keeps pace with the emotions and actions. I love listening to this series!

Review:
Errol has gone from being a drunken, obscure peasant to a famous hero and elevated to an earldom in the kingdom of Illustra. He is a rare omne and reader who can cast lots to determine important decisions. He is unaware of his importance to the kingdom, is caught up in a web of events that he doesn’t comprehend and has become a target for many enemies. On top of the political and church manipulations controlling Errol, he and the Princess Adora have developed a mutual affection that would seem impossible to hold any future.

Errol is accused by one man in the conclave of the Judicia, the Church authority, of having consorted with herbwoman, whom many view as witches or whores. Errol was healed with the help of such women so there is no way that he can deny the charges. The head of the church, the Archbenefice, knows this but plans to control the sentencing to protect Errol as a second, more serious charge of treason will be delayed until the first sentence is served. Errol is not guilty of treason but he has knowledge that would reveal actions of other friends and leaders who must be protected. Thus Errol has become a pawn between faithful, if misguided, church leaders and kingdom guard who seek to protect the balance of the people from the power hungry Weir family and their allies who would abuse through control of the throne and the church.

Unfortunately the Duke of Weir, the second accuser, manages to get Errol sentenced to a mission to seek out and kill the feared, fallen church leader, Sarin Valon, who has joined with the enemies in the kingdom of Merakh. It is clearly intended as a death sentence and a compulsion is placed on Errol to enforce his obedience.

Errol at least gets to pick his own team but his best friends, Benefice Martin, his aide, Luis, and Errol’s fighting trainer, Cruk, have left on an undisclosed trip of their own. He then picks an unexpected group: his mentor, Rale, who is a warrior retired to farming; Naaman Ru, a caravan guide who once kidnapped and threatened to kill Errol, and an elderly, defrocked priest. Their journey will be fraught with assassin attempts as the enemy has created a ring of readers who can determine where Errol is and communicate the information through the circle. The danger increases when Princess Adora sneaks away from the kingdom to join Errol on the deadly quest.

Meanwhile Martin, Luis and Cruk have come across another strange man of Deas, Karele, who has shown that Aurae, the spirit of Deas (God) will speak directly to men.  Karele, with the help of Aurae, can counteract the reader and their art of drawing lots. This team too faces perils as they change their course to find Errol and help in his task.

This book is epic and engaging. It alternates between the two groups as they forge through their dangers until they are brought together and face the enemy. I was uncertain at first at the church practice of deciding lots so I was glad when Karele made it clear that the practice was not needed in seeking the will of Deas.

The story is full of danger, action, betrayal, demon possession, friendship, love and faith. There is insanity, wisdom and good suspense. The plot is deep and well developed with some surprising twists. I was pulled into becoming invested in the well being of the characters. I have not read the first book and, although I was fully engaged jumping into the middle of the series, I recommend starting with book one so you have the complete character history, especially for Errol and his friends. I will certainly want to read the next book to see what happens.

Review:
Jack is determine to find out what happened to his father and to try to rescue him. His two awkward friends, chubby T-Rex and quick Will, might be unlikely fighters but they are determined to stick with Jack. They are being led by the skilled monster hunter, Eva, who showed up to train Jack the day before his fourteenth birthday, when he learned that he is from a long line of Monster Hunters.

The trip to the Monster Hunter Academy takes them over the ocean and through the mountains. They soon are facing dangers, including huge wolves led by a fierce giant wolf named Tiberon. Daniel, another Monster Hunter trainer, is intent on killing all of the wolves.  Jack has an encounter with Tiberon and chooses to help him rather than kill him.

Jack meets the ancient, wise leader, Aquinas, and other trainers and students. Daniel treats Eva as his girl which sets the two boys at odds right away. The other hunters and trainees watch Jack warily as they have heard the rumors about “the one true descendant of the Templars” who legends says can defeat the evil hordes of Ren Lucre who has his father.

Jack is more interested in finding answers about his father than committing seriously to the  training. He does make at least one new friend in a young boy, Xavier, who is a tinkerer creating ‘James Bond’ type gadgets and weapons. Some of those gadgets come in handy as Jack takes on a quest. When Jack returns successfully he discovers the Academy is under attack and he and his friends have to pull together to face the enemy.

I couldn’t help but notice that there are many similarities in the plot line with the first Harry Potter book. There are awkward but loyal friends, an interest in the strong, bright female companion, a wise leader who takes a special interest in Jack and many dangerous creatures. I enjoyed the action and liked that there are a few growing up lessons as the characters develop.

The story is very entertaining and there is clearly more danger and adventure to come. I think this book could be read alone but I recommend starting the series with book one (my review) so the reader has the full history of Jack’s background.
