Summary:
The follow-up to the hugely popular science fiction action-adventure All Systems Red Artificial Condition continues The Murderbot Diaries, a science fiction series that tackles questions of the ethics of sentient robotics. It appeals to fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans. 'As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure.' It has a dark past-one in which a number of humans were killed. A past that caused it to christen itself 'Murderbot.' But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don't want to know what the 'A' stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue. What it discovers will forever change the way it thinks.

Review:
‘Murderbot’ is an AI droid who has overcome his controlling programming and is suspected of being a raging murderer. Now a rogue droid, Murderbot sets out on his own to research his past. He has to negotiate security systems to move through the communities that would take him back under control. He manages to get on a droid only transport with the expectation he can travel under the radar and with no interference. However, the command of the Research Transport vessel, dubbed ART, does interfere and, for good or not, ART encourages Murderbot to pursue his memories. And ART steps in to help several times.

I did like the fact that Murderbot was able to investigate what really happened. I also enjoyed the aid he reluctantly received from ART. I liked the quirkiness of both characters. This episode was reasonably entertaining and moved along well. However, I didn’t find it particularly enthralling. The story does indicate a conspiracy that might result in danger in the future, although that isn’t clear. I would not pay full price for these small episodes but would pick up more in the series if I can get them on sale.

Audio Notes: Kevin R. Free does a good job with the narration. He actually conveys the mostly unexcited nature of the AI characters. I am glad I was able to get the audio through a deal.

What Are You Reading? is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

Last week work was a little different as I spent the time preparing for trial on Thursday. I felt the trial day went well but we didn't finish and need to set another date to go back.

Friday I spent in the emergency waiting room as they took hubby in for Covid treatment. He went to see the doctor for chills and a raw throat, suspecting his annual sinus infection. The NP at our doctor’s office was concerned when his blood pressure and oxygen levels were too low. We thought he was going to the hospital to get the infusion right then. Instead, he was put into a separate room and I sat around the emergency waiting room for six hours before a doctor admitted him and told him that the treatment is given over five days. I felt cold symptoms yesterday (runny nose, little sore throat, little headache), but a home test showed negative for Covid. I am feeling fine today with just some nose blowing due to the cold. Still, I will quarantine for five days so I am out of office through Tuesday.

Progress on the building repairs! We were all happy to see scaffolding at the building as they begin work on the front, fixing brick along the top level and preping for roof repairs.

I don't know about these days with 40 degree spread in the temperatures like 79 down to 39. We have had rain that makes it chilling (for us). Last evening/night we had high wind warnings. I heard our awning jumping in the middle of the night.

My reading was better this week, especially with five hours to read the ebook on Friday. I finished the kindle ebook and two audiobooks. I posted two reviews (one today as internet was out Saturday evening) with my usual memes.

I visited 18 blogs last week.
Shout Out this week to LISA EVERYDAY READS. Lisa says she is a "Wife, Mom and part time Libran at our local library..." Her blog "features romance books with and without Spice of all kinds. As well as link ups, meme and book tours."

January 16, 2022 - I am really enjoying the videos in my new Bible Reading Plan: BibleProject | One Story that Leads to Jesus. I know it won't match my Hubby's reading but I wanted some different insights/devotions and I like the look of this project. I am looking forward to keeping up with my reading each day.

I may start smaller studies soon.

I completed three books for review this week.
My NetGalley shelf has two back to three old ebook titles. I will probably end up letting A Place Called Armageddon go as DNF.
I still have two author titles remaining in queue. They will (obviously) be read in 2022.
(Plus a few that I received from facebook links and newsletter sign-ups, not specific review requests.)

Review:
All her life Andrea has hoped her parents would be proud of her efforts. But Andrea’s European Studies/English degrees aren’t impressive to a family including a “Doctor”, a “Professor”, and a “State Senator”. Andrea hasn’t found the right job to settle into and, having struggled without a job for months, she has applied online for a job as an Administrative Assistant who “Must be willing to never ask questions. Ever.” Suddenly someone cuts a hole in her apartment wall as another man in a gas mask walks through her door to take her to an interview.

Andrea agrees to accept a job at the Corporation for UltraHuman Protection (C.U.P.), Soon she is dealing with all sorts of superheroes and learning how to please her secretive boss, Mrs. Persephone Oh. It turns out that Andrea is an excellent AA and willing to job into action when the need arises.

The surperhero characters are strange and fun with most having quirky abilities. Teleporter Joe can only teleport one way to one place, The Big Axe grows in size with his special, deadly axe, Tiger King uses his speed and claws, Kitchen Sink uses a costume that gives the wearer a deep voice and all sorts of weapons to throw at villains, and Professor Well Actually can’t help correcting facts as he begins each sentence with “Well, actually…”. There are many more and the C.U.P. administrative office has to deal with all normal Human Resource issues, their complaints regarding supplies, uniforms, and salaries, while keeping the teams organized to protect the public at large at a profitable cost while minimizing risks and damages.

When an alien egg spaceship arrives at Yankee Stadium C.U.P. slides in to secure the protection contract and face the enemy. Even with all of the C.U.P. superheroes brought in from all of the states, there is no guarantee they will succeed in keeping the threat within the contracted territory and defeating an alien force to safe the world.

I actually started listening to this book months ago in the car as I don’t always download books on some of the other apps. I found it easy to pick this up on and off without losing the thread of the zany story. There may be some argument that there are political statements being made but I just ignored that aspect while enjoying the entertainment. This did remind me of Douglas Adams’ A Hitchhikers Guide. I recommend it to those who enjoy that sort of entertainment.

Audio Notes: Bahni Turpin does a wonderful job with narration. Her voice for Andrea fits and brings the character to life. She also provides other clear, distinct voices while delivering effective energy to the action. I am glad I was able to enjoy this in audio.

Sunday Words of Encouragement January 16, 2022

This morning my church experience was different than expected. We have had a lot of illness in our community in the form of flu, strep, and Covid. These illnesses have impacted our church family including a group of teachers and leaders, including our Sunday School teacher and our youth pastor. Accordingly, in caution, it was decided to not have services this morning.

I ended up listening a live service of Real Life with Jack Hibbs. The worship was nice with songs I know. The sermon was good with a two-fold message: We are all sinners, and our only Hope is through the savior, Jesus.

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost TWELVE years I have posted 91 groups of mostly 16 books plus an additional 21 totaling approximately 1,535 books available to find new homes! (As of November 26, 2021).

I am happy to say that so far at least 1,388 books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A year or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Note rules here regarding international entries.

Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, TWRP, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors, your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to faraway places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)
