What Are You Reading? is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

Heather is managing on antibiotics while still waiting for the custom solution. It has helped a lot to have her in the office.
I have to go to a conference next Saturday in Orlando so of course the office staff have planned a Disney trip around my event. We are set to go to Animal Kingdom on Friday (my first visit to that park) and then Epcot on Sunday. We will be out of office Friday and Monday and the staff need this break.
Depending on how much I can prepare this week, I may take a weekend break from posting.

I sure wish I had bought more Etherium last year when I first opened my account. My return on that alone is up 2,401%.

These are the flowers my hubby got me for Mother's day even though I told him not to.

A flower stem broke off so I put it into the little vase in front.

We've had on and off rain but temps are starting to run in the 80s every few days.

Reading was slow other than listening. I have been pushing work late so I have crashed at 12pm every night.  I finished two audio books and am half way through another.  I posted three reviews and my usual memes.

I only visited 17 blogs last week.
Shout Out this week to Lisa Loves Literature. Lisa is a high school librarian who says "authors are her rock stars...".

May 9, 2021 - I love seeing new things each time I read the Bible. I am glad to still be current with morning reading. (I got one day behind but and caught up again.)
I am reading/listening to the NLT Tyndale version of the Bible on You Version App so Hubby and I are reading the same passages each day.
No new study this week.

Sunday Words of Encouragement May 9, 2021

I was happy to be in church today without a mask. We were given a baby bottle to use as a “change” bottle, collecting donations for the local pregnancy crisis center. Pastor also announced that our first “Kid’s night” for the community reached more than 25 children who are not members of our church. We hope to double that in June!

Pastor continued his series, It Matters, with a message to fit Mother’s Day. What is your legacy? How we live impacts children, co-workers, our community and our world. Have we made a difference? Each mother has had a huge part. But the relationship that matters most is the relationship with Jesus.

One’s legacy doesn't stop with DNA. What we leave behind, what we are known for, matters.
Hebrews Chapter 11 is known as the “Hall of Faith”. Rahab, a prostitute, (Joshua 2) was not a woman one might expect in the Hall of Faith. There is also Hannah who is remembered although you might not recall her husband’s name.

1 Samuel 1:9-18 tells of Hannah’s despair at being barren and then she prays for a son whom she promises to give back to God. God answered Hannah’s prayer and in time she returned Samuel to the priest. 1 Samuel 1:24-28. Hannah didn't know the extent of her legacy as she couldn’t know how important Samuel would be in God’s plans.

The Point: The legacy we leave matters.

You are observed by children, students, neighbors, bosses, employees, and each person you come into contact with.
A tree is identified by its fruit – good or not. See Luke 6:43-45.
Our behavior should reflect Jesus’ place in our life. Have we been obedient to God's direction and call? Do others see your relationship with Jesus? That is a legacy worth leaving.

Review:
Goat is a bit rambunctious and likes to challenge his friend Frog to follow what Goat does. Goat uses all sorts of prepositions with props. Frog tries to keep up while balancing on his lily pad. Initially the game is fun, but soon it becomes overwhelming for Frog. Can their friendship survive all this “one-upsmanship”?

This is a fun book with bright, cute illustrations. The book shares propositions for young people to learn and enjoy in a fun way. It also provides the opportunity to discuss friendship and peer pressure. This is apparently part of a series called Elephant & Piggie Like Reading! where Elephant and Piggie introduce the book and conclude it. I recommend this as a fun book to share with kindergarten and elementary children.

This biography shares wonderful information about this remarkable woman and about the Civil Rights Movement.

It is a book about a little black girl who was born into a Christian home in the racially explosive town of Birmingham, Alabama, during the throes of the Civil Rights Movement. It’s about two parents who quietly defied discrimination, stood against injustice, clung to their faith, and raised their child to follow the Lord they themselves served. They believed wholeheartedly that she was a gift from God born for such a time as this and that he had a special plan and a purpose for her life—a plan for good, and not for evil, a plan to give her a hope and a future—all this despite what the world shouted at them through hatred and prejudice that hovered over them mercilessly.
Condoleezza Rice has built her life and career on defied expectations. Review:
I was not overly familiar with Condoleezza Rice but I was drawn to this title due to a) the emphasis on her faith and b) her success in politics after coming through the throes of the Civil Right years. The author does a beautiful job of giving a personal view of Condoleezza’s (Condi’s) life. This cover’s Condi’s birth in the early 1950s and her childhood growing up living on the edge of the tumultuous events of Birmingham as the Civil Rights Movement struggled to change attitudes throughout America.

The book actually starts before birth because it describes the lives and difficult years that her grandparents came through. Their steadfast faith, persevering through segregated racism in the South, deeply influenced Condi. Condi’s parents sheltered her from direct contact with the worst of community racial mistreatment. They explained the events to her in a way that precluded bitterness, letting her know that her color and family status in no way limited her opportunities. They stressed that faith in a loving and faithful God and the pursuit of education were paramount for success.

Condi is clearly a brilliant and diligent woman. From a young child she disciplined herself in all her endeavors, including practicing piano, studying hard, and learning Russian. As an adult she applied her skills in collegiate and political settings. The author makes a point that Condi’s success stems from her faith and positive attitude. I really like Condi’s attitude that “The first responsibility of the educated person is to be optimistic.” She also learned that strength comes through struggles and loss, as “it is through struggle that we find redemption and self-knowledge.” Her reliance upon God at a time of loss helped her to experience ‘the peace that surpasses all understanding.’

The author notes that Condi became a Republican because the party’s principles were consistent with her own. The book touches on her years in civil service and the many offers she received to seek positions as a Senator or Governor. But Condi didn’t want to run for office and repeatedly excelled in the field of education, being the youngest Provost at Stanford University in 1993. Condi had a staunch belief in liberty as God’s gift to humanity and that America leads the fight for liberation. Perhaps this belief, in addition to her previous work with President George W. Bush, influenced her decision to accept the position as Secretary of State in 2005, a few years after the terrorist attacks in 2001.

The blurb appropriately states that this “is not a book about politics.” It is a book that shares details of racial struggles and the faith that sustains Condoleezza in all aspects of her life. I have to say that I was appalled at descriptions of racial assaults during the Civil Rights years but even against Condi when she was Secretary of State! I enjoyed learning about this remarkable woman and especially enjoyed the positive theme and emphasis on faith. I recommend this as a worthwhile and inspirational memoir.

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost TEN years I have posted 91 groups of 16 books plus an additional 21 totaling 1,477 books available to find new homes! (As of November 6, 2020).

I am happy to say that so far about 1,359+ books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A year or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Note rules here regarding international entries.

Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, TWRP, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors, your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to faraway places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)
