If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost NINE years I have posted 88 groups of 16 plus an additional 21 totaling 1,429 books to find new homes! (as of November 8, 2019).

I am happy to say that so far about 1,302+ books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A year or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Note rules here regarding international entries.
Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors, your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to faraway places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

Repeating this helpful blog tip: You can right click on a link and you will be given the choice to open the link in a new window or tab so you do not navigate away from the screen you are on!! I use this all the time!

#NetGalley Book Review: The Woman in the Veil by Laura Joh Rowland

I really liked this Victorian mystery which has strong descriptions.
The Woman in the Veil
by Laura Joh Rowland
45731464. sy475
File Size: 1591 KB
Print Length: 314 pages
Publisher: Crooked Lane Books (January 7, 2020)
Language: English
ASIN: B07QDJNBJC
Genre: Amateur Sleuth, Historical Mystery, Mystery
My Rating: 4.25 of 5.0.

Award-winning author Laura Joh Rowland is back with the fourth in her critically acclaimed Victorian mysteries where the case of a mutilated "Sleeping Beauty" washes ashore in London.
London, June 1890.
Sarah Bain and her friends Lord Hugh Staunton and Mick O'Reilly are crime scene photographers for the Daily World newspaper. After solving a sensational murder, they're under pressure to deliver another big story. On a foggy summer night, they're called to the bank of the river Thames. The murder victim is an unidentified woman whose face has been slashed. But as Sarah takes photographs, she discovers that the woman is still alive.
The case of "Sleeping Beauty" becomes a public sensation, and three parties quickly come forward to identify her: a rich, sinister artist who claims she's his wife; a mother and her two daughters who co-own a nursing home and claim she's their stepdaughter/sister; and a precocious little girl who claims Sleeping Beauty is her mother. Which party is Sleeping Beauty's rightful kin? Is someone among them her would-be killer?
Then Sleeping Beauty awakens--with a severe case of amnesia. She's forgotten her name and everything else about herself. But she recognizes one of the people who've claimed her. Sarah is delighted to reunite a family and send Sleeping Beauty home--until one of the claimants is murdered. Suddenly, Sarah, her motley crew of friends, and her fiancé Detective Sergeant Barrett are on the wrong side of the law. Now they must identify the killer before they find themselves headed for the gallows.

Review:
Sarah is a brave female photographer working with a past of secrets and a misfit team. Lord Hugh has been cut from his former society crowd after being caught in a gay scandal. Mick is a teenaged street urchin who has joined with Sarah realizing that he can better himself through education. The team came together as a private detective agency after solving a high-profile case involving the Ripper. Now they serve as a crime scene photograph team hired by a wealthy banker who has taken over The Daily World.

The team is called out to photograph a murder scene of a naked woman lying on the banks of the Thames. The team begins to investigate, examining the site and interviewing witnesses but as Sarah is photographing the woman, she realizes the victim is alive. The woman’s face has been viciously slashed, and no one knows who she is. When she wakes from the coma she apparently has amnesia.

Sarah’s fiancĂ©, Detective Sergeant Barrett often steps in to help the team or to keep them in line. He allows Sarah to sit in as he interviews people who have come forward claiming to know “Sleeping Beauty”. Three particular parties are the most likely relatives. But Sarah and her friends worry that Sleeping Beauty may be in danger if she returns to a home where she has already escaped violence.

Sarah and Barrett disagree on whom they think Sleeping Beauty is which creates tension. Meanwhile, Barrett’s recent promotion is resented by a rival who takes every chance to go after Barrett, Sarah, and their friends. When one of the possible relatives ends up dead at the house where the team is staying, Sarah becomes the prime suspect. The investigation intensifies as the team realizes they must solve the mysteries that remain if they want to save Sarah from prison or the gallows!

I quickly liked these distinct characters with their difficult pasts. Ms. Rowland doesn’t shy away from the dark and messy details of the era as her descriptions create scenes of smell and sound as well as sight. The story has good mystery and tension that kept me pushing to discover who committed the crimes and how things would work out for the beleaguered team. The author wove in an introduction to the characters, so this read fine as a standalone although it did raise my interest in book 1, The Ripper. I recommend this as an engaging read to fans of mystery and Victorian history.

Audible Book Review: Evil Eye by Madhuri Shekar

This is a quick story with an ironic twist.

Release date: 05-02-19

About This Audible Original
Usha is convinced that the Evil Eye, a curse that brings continuous misfortune, was cast upon her daughter, Pallavi, in the womb. What else could have possibly left her driven, career-oriented daughter edging closer and closer to 30 without a prospective husband? Determined to set Pallavi on the right path, Usha arranges date after date with potential suitors—but after yet another setup fails, it seems her efforts are proving fruitless. But in an unexpected turn of events, Pallavi becomes her own matchmaker when she meets—and quickly falls for—Sandeep, a young Indian-American entrepreneur. And though she expects her mother will be elated with her finally finding a man, Pallavi is distraught and confused to find her mother growing increasingly suspicious of Sandeep’s motives…and his true identity.
Told through a series of phone calls and voicemails, this Audible Original penned by award-winning rising star playwright Madhuri Shekar transitions seamlessly from a light-hearted family dramedy to an unexpectedly supernatural thriller. With an endearing cast of well-rounded characters, sharp, natural dialogue, and a shocking edge-of-your-seat climax, Evil Eye is a can’t-miss tale about cultural miscommunications, family secrets, and the lingering echoes of trauma.
Playwright Madhuri Shekar was awarded a commission through the Audible Emerging Playwrights Fund, an initiative dedicated to developing innovative original plays driven by language and voice. As an Audible commissioned playwright, he received funding and creative support to develop Evil Eye.
Please note: This audio contains strong language, distressing situations, and descriptions of abuse and violence that some listeners may find upsetting. Discretion is advised.

Review:
Pallavi is a young Indian woman living in America where she enjoys pursuing her career. Her mother, Usha, has returned to India and is concerned that Pallavi is nearing 30 without a good Indian husband. Usha has tried setting Pallavi up even from a distance. Her concern is increasing as she fears that her daughter has been cursed by the Evil Eye. Pallavi has no knowledge that her mother’s own past is driving this fear.

Pallavi is excited when she stumbles upon a handsome Indian-American businessman from a well-established family. She thinks her mother will be thrilled to hear she is dating, and that the relationship is moving quickly. Instead, her mother becomes suspicious causing confusion and tension in the family. This escalates with Usha expressing increasing panic. Finally, Usha flies off to America with her husband trying to catch the next flight behind her hoping to protect his daughter and his wife.

This story has a good development to an exciting climax. I enjoyed the telling through phone calls and texts back and forth. I found it engaging to ‘observe’ the generational and cultural issues between daughter, mother and to a smaller degree, the father. There is some foul language, even early in the story but it moves off quickly. This is a good, quick listen that I recommend for fans of family drama with mystery.

Audio Notes: The narrators, Nick Choksi, Harsh Nayaar, Annapurna Sriram, Bernard White, and Rita Wolf do a grand job of bringing the characters to life. The voices match the people and the dialogue exchange. The performance is engaging and I'm glad I was able to pick this as a Audible Original when I might have missed out.

Sunday Post March 1, 2020/It's Monday! What are You Reading? Plus Mailbox Monday March 2, 2020

Sunday Post #318 Chairs, Compliance, and Storms
I am linking with Sunday Post at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading now at The Book Date (at Wordpress)?
What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

As usual this was a busy week. Heather was under the weather with fever and sore throat. She stayed home on Friday so I hope she will feel better by Monday. Hubby stayed home from church this morning after a fever last night. I sure wish my family and office could stay healthy!
Hubby thought he moved all the crocus bulbs to the back but he missed these that brightened the front walk this week.
More ups and downs with cooler temps dropping into 30s again, plus rain.
I enjoyed my week of reading and listening. I finished one audiobook and one ebook. I posted four reviews and my usual memes.

I visited 20 blogs last week.
Shout Out this week to Still Life With Cracker Crumb... Erin is married with a son after a long journey. She says "We love books and reading, and can be found at the library at least once a week!"
Thank you to all the nice people who visit me.

March 1, 2020 - I am again enjoying the devotions and readings with the One Year Bible plan through You Version App. I considered changing but this is the reading group that is closest to my husband's reading so we can sometimes discuss the same passages.
I finished a short 3-day plan titled Choose How to Live Now I have started a 41 day Lent study: Lent: With One Voice.

I completed two books and posted four reviews which continues to keep me up to date.

Welcome to Mailbox Monday.
Mailbox Monday is a gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week and explore great book blogs. This Meme started with Marcia at A Girl and Her Books (fka The Printed Page) and after a tour of hosts has returned to its permanent home at Mailbox Monday. Thanks to the ladies sharing hosting duties: Leslie of Under My Apple Tree, Serena of Savvy Verse & Wit and (yours truly). Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.
I received two new review titles, one author and one NetGalley.

I stumbled on a free Audible by J.K. Rowling and picked out a Kindle Unlimited that came with an audio.
I also picked up two Chirp titles and had to resist others.
I added only 3 free kindle titles this week. (Note these are in my Amazon library, NOT on my Kindle until I download and transfer them.) Are your mailbox and TBR piles blooming?

Sunday Words of Encouragement March 1, 2020

Our Sunday School teacher continued his lesson series on “Why did God create man?”
He noted that salvation is not God's only plan for man. God created man for His own pleasure. God had planned for a different world when he created man.

Now we are living in the church age waiting for restoration. Satan failed in heaven but succeeded in capturing the dominion on Earth. Man remains in a transition period, directed to take the message of salvation to all the world. Our focus should be on our job of extending the message and learning to serve and obey God’s directions.

The Earth is to be cleansed of corruption. We can look forward to a new heaven and a new earth. “But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.” 2 Peter 3:16.

Luke 21:22-28 tells us that when the day of judgment comes, the heavenly bodies will be shaken. But we should rejoice as the day of redemption draws nigh. Redemption will mean restoring mankind's standing with God. Man is redeemed by Christ’s death on the cross, but we are not restored until His second return. In the future man “will reign on the earth”. Revelation 5:9-10.

Live this life in terms of eternity. We need to recognize that we are not humans waiting to become spiritual, but we are spiritual beings having a human experience. We are currently tenant farmers (Leviticus 25:23) but someday we will reign as God intended. Will we have the right attitude of humility and service and submission to God?

I searched for a while for a song I liked for today's message. I chose this one.
Verses for Today:
Luke 21:22-28 NIV
22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
