Sunday Post January 8, 2017/It's Monday! What are You Reading? Plus Mailbox Monday January 9, 2017

I am linking with Sunday Post at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading now at The Book Date.
Thank you to Sheila for the years that she handled this meme.
Thank you to Kathryn for taking up the baton.
What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

Another strange week for me. An extra day to rest up, then busy work days with appointments when I was hoping for full work time for file work. My cold bug is nearly gone. I spent Saturday with DH pulling our moveable plants inside and covering those we couldn't move. Then I packed up the Christmas tree ornaments and decorations. After that I started on eTP book work. It was well along the day before I realized that I hadn't posted a review as planned and still had the SBB post to do. Ahhh well - I'll be scrambling again this week with a couple days of traveling; plus two scheduled posts. Such is life.

Reading was mostly listening and print. I finished two TBR audibles and am pretty far along on two print books. I posted two reviews on the blog and one at Goodreads. I also posted all of my usual memes plus year-end Challenge reports.

I enjoyed visiting early in the week; met a few new bloggers (and I'm lining up some blog shout outs).
My shout out this week is to Audiobook Jukebox which is a great place to receive and share audio reviews.
Thank you to all the nice people who visit me.

These were last week's posts:
  • Audible Book Review: The Chimes by Charles Dickens; Classic, Holiday; my rating 4.5.
  • Goodreads Book Review: The Yellow Line by Kitrin Haas; Romance; my rating 4.0.

Finished Reading:

Patriots of Treason
Written by: David Thomas Roberts
Narrated by: Kelly Klaas
This is a timely thriller full of interesting political tidbits.
Publisher's Summary
Tea anyone? After decades of erosion of the U.S. Constitution, the United States is faced with a major constitutional crisis not seen since the Civil War. A president and his administration filled with scandals and plagued by economic woes surprisingly wins re-election to a second term largely based on an "October Surprise" and the promise of redistribution of the nation's wealth. The night he is re-elected, an assassination attempt throws America into chaos, resulting in riots, food shortages and violence across the country. When it is discovered the assassin has ties to the Tea Party, the administration sees its opportunity to quash its political opposition and launch a diabolical conspiracy to hide the truth of the assassin's real motives. The President and his minions attempt to keep the lid on the conspiracy by any means necessary, including issuing unconstitutional executive orders.
Jack-booted federal agents are ordered to raid private citizens' homes to eradicate the Tea Party once and for all. After an ordinary citizen in Texas, a founder of a local Tea Party, is terrorized and held without due process, the governor of Texas dispatches iconic Texas legend Pops Younger to rescue him. The entire country becomes riveted in the suspense of the high-stakes chess game that pits the State of Texas and the Texas Rangers against the administration and the ATF that escalates to unprecedented proportions. An exciting and fast-paced political thriller, Patriots of Treason presents a very realistic 'what if' scenario that will keep you on the edge of your seat, regardless of your political persuasion.

3. Audible (ABB-Narrator)

We
Written by: Yevgeny Zamyatin
Narrated by: Grover Gardner
This is another title picked/planned this for Sci Fi Experience and Vintage Sci Fi. It is very interesting.
Publisher's Summary
Set in the 26th century A.D., Yevgeny Zamyatin's masterpiece describes life under the regimented totalitarian society of OneState, ruled over by the all-powerful "Benefactor." Recognized as the inspiration for George Orwell's 1984, We is the archetype of the modern dystopia, or anti-Utopia: a great prose poem detailing the fate that might befall us all if we surrender our individual selves to some collective dream of technology and fail in the vigilance that is the price of freedom. Clarence Brown's brilliant translation is based on the corrected text of the novel, first published in Russia in 1988 after more than 60 years' suppression.

4. eBook/Kindle (NG)

Dead and Breakfast: A Merry Ghost Inn Mystery

by Kate Kingsbury (Author)
This releases 1/10/17 so I thought I would get to reading. I haven't gotten to this yet.
Click on book title for full description.

January 8, 2017 - I am up to date with the One Year Bible; reading along with my husband and others from our church. I hope to take more time this year, staying on the day and listening to the companion commentary online.

I completed two new books and posted three reviews which still leaves me four due for 2016 reads (I miscounted last week).

I have requested some new audio titles as I can always squeeze listening in!
I now have 16 NetGalley Titles and 13+ author titles in my queue.

We did get an ebook release out but waiting for covers for two prints releases.
I had to make adjustments but we will get one horror/thriller upload for eTreasure's NetGalley page this week.

Welcome to Mailbox Monday.
Mailbox Monday is a gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week and explore great book blogs. This Meme started with Marcia at A Girl and Her Books (fka The Printed Page) and after a tour of hosts has returned to its permanent home at Mailbox Monday. Thanks to the ladies sharing hosting duties: Leslie of Under My Apple Tree, Serena of Savvy Verse & Wit and (yours truly). Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

I received three more NetGalley titles plus a review ebook and an audio review book.
I already failed on the (unofficial) plan for no purchases for three months:
I picked up one $.99 Kindle titles and one Audible Daily Deal.

Again, I picked up a fair number of free kindle titles. (Note these are in my Amazon library, NOT on my Kindle until I download and transfer them.)

Are your mailbox and TBR piles blooming?

Review Titles
These are titles from NetGalley. The three for Young Readers (Children and young at heart), I picked up the last week of 2016. The other three books I picked up this past week.

The Blue Hour
by Isabelle Simler (February 20, 2017 release.)
"A lovely and tranquil celebration of nature."
I couldn't resist when I saw this cover!
Kalico Jack
by Mike Nahorniak
"Kalico Jack is a little different from the other Jack Rabbits so much so that he is he is constantly ridiculed."
I was attracted to this story of a Jack Rabbit of a different color. :-)

Ivy in Bloom
by Vanita Oelschlager; Kristin Blackwood (Illustrator)
"Ivy In Bloom captures the weariness of a young girl tired of a long winter."
I wanted to be ready for Spring!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These three picked up this week for the mature me.
The Sleepwalker
by Chris Bohjalian
"From the New York Times bestselling author of The Guest Room comes a spine-tingling novel of lies, loss, and buried desire—the mesmerizing story of a wife and mother who vanishes from her bed late one night."
I think I may have spotted this at another blog but I am not certain. It sounds good though.
Dear Heart: The Courting Letters
by Judith Pinkerton Josephson; Kirsten Josephson (Illustrator) (January 10, 2017 release.)
"Dear Heart: The Courting Letters weaves a tapestry from two intersecting love stories. Will the threads hold or pull apart?"
I saw this and loved the cover and description.
Terminal Regression
by Mallory Hill
(January 17, 2017 release.)
"It is the story of a tomorrow that teeters on the edge of utopia and dystopia and a resigned outsider who might just change it forever."
This story line caught my interest.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I also received an author title and an audiobook from Blackstone Audio through Audiobook Jukebox.

Girl of Fire: The Expulsion Project Book One (A Science Fiction Dystopian Thriller)
by Norma Hinkens (January 10, 2017 release.)
"ORIGIN. DESTINY. FATE. How far would you go to unravel the truth?"
I have enjoyed Ms. Hinkens work and am excited to read another new title, although I won't get it read in time for the release date.
Goliath
Author: Steve Alten
Narrator: Chris Kipinaiak

"Terrorism. Acts of oppression. The threat of nuclear war. What if one madman aboard a vessel could end these fears forever?
But there is another player in this life-and-death chess match: unbeknownst to Covah and the Goliath crew, the Goliath’s biochemical computer brain has become self-aware—and it’s developing its own agenda."
This sounds like a good sci fi thriller.

Won
NONE

Purchased
I did pick up one Kindle box set for $.99.

The Days of Noah, The Complete Box Set: A Novel of the End Times in America
Mark Goodwin
I had book one in Audible and book three in Kindle so this got me book two.

I am still tempted by the Audible Daily Deals.
This week I again picked up only one for $3.95:
Written by: Bruce Bueno de Mesquita , Alastair Smith
Narrated by: Johnny Heller
The title and description captured my interest for this.

Free

I added 62 free Kindle titles to my library this week. Titles found linked through Bookbub, Bookfun, Ereader News Today, Free Par-tay, Ignite Your Book, Inspired Reads, Pixel of Ink or Kindle ebooks.

Sunday Words of Encouragement January 8, 2017

What a lovely morning. Our Sunday School (SS) teacher gave a message on Landmarks which led well into the church service. Those notes will be a message to share another day. In the service, after opening with worship, we celebrated four baptisms of young people, had prayer time and proceeded to the message.

Pastor’s sermon was titled “Shift”. Anyone who has ever driven a manual (shift) car, knows that the learning experience is usually rough and bumpy before becoming smoothing out. Pastor noted that our worldly culture is shifting. Reaching our community is now one of the great challenges that faces every church, and very importantly our church. The tendency, as we move through our lives, is that we have less contact with unchurched. Many are further from God than ever before. The current culture has embraced relativism and subjectivism. (Relativism: the assumption that there is no certain truth. Subjectivism: each person determines right and wrong in their own eyes.)

Jesus points the way to effectively reach our community in John 13:1-15. We must first love unconditionally and serve selflessly. We can only reach others through relationships, which are done in circles, not rows (or pews).

The Point: Be intentionally and determined to connect relationally with our community by loving and serving.

This message made me think of this lovely song:
Make Me a Servant.
Verses for Today:
John 13:12-15 NLT
12After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? 13You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. 14And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. 15I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. 16I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. 17Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.

Lord, help me be discerning of your specific direction in my life to love and serve others.

Sharing Beyond Books #285 Comment Giveaway January 7, 2017

Hello again and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB!

Thanks to everyone who commented last week. I hope everyone is staying safe and warm during this strong winter weather.

I was a little surprised that most of our SBB followers/commentors do not have a book list. Many of you pick from your TBR piles, especially for favorite series or authors. Several are planning/hoping to read one book per week 50-52. (That would simplify my life but I would never get through my stacks - not that I will ever anyway!) Elizabeth and Rita have lists that just keep growing (I can relate).

~~~~~
The Winner from SBB #284 comments is: #10 Rita who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the Updated ARC/Review titles or (not yet updated) Love titles - all linked near the end of the post. [I'm hoping to update the book choices - maybe the beginning of next year, lol.] Please let me know your choice by completing the WINNER FORM.
WEEK #285
(One Question.)
Natalija asks: What's your comfort food??
(This question made me feel good just answering it.) I definitely have a comfort food. When I don't feel well, when it is very cold, or when I have a trial and need to eat lunch... I have my comfort food: grilled cheese sandwich (with bacon if my tummy can handle it).
[Mmmmm - bet I'll have one this week during the cold weather!]
Image Found at The Odyssey.
Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! The supply of questions is dwindling so share some if you think of any -- even if they are duplicates I'll weed through or try to modify.
Your turn to share: Natalija asks: What's your comfort food??
SBB Comment Winners can choose a selection from the Valentine and "Love" books or the February 2015 Newly Updated ARC/Review List. (My daughter pulled several of the Christmas titles to give with gift bags we made up for the nursing homes. One of these days I will get together a new box of Christmas titles.)
SBB Rules:
a) Must be a follower.
b) Share a comment on the question above.
Open internationally and an international winner may get a smaller book or a $5.00 GC if I decide the mailing is too much.
I will pick a Comment winner from all comments made through Saturday January 14, 2017 at 5 PM central.
Audible Book Review: The Great Martian War: Invasion by Scott Washburn
This is an engaging continuation and enhancement, based on the original story by H.G. Wells.
The Great Martian War: Invasion
Written by: Scott Washburn
Narrated by: Ray Greenley
Length: 8 hrs and 49 mins
Unabridged Audiobook
Release Date:10-27-16
Publisher: Listen2aBook.com
Genre: Sci Fi, Alternate History
My Rating: 4.25 of 5.0
Publisher's Summary
Following the initial Martian invasion of England, President Theodore Roosevelt tries to prepare the United States for the potential of another Martian incursion. As the possibility of a stronger invasion is increasingly clear, the US government tries to mobilize nations to share information and technology to defend humanity. Newly minted ordinance officer Andrew Comstock has been placed in charge of developing new technology that has to be tested on the fly in a race against time if humanity is to survive.
Review:
I must admit to being a bit confused when this started with Theodore Roosevelt as President. I was thinking of the radio broadcast from the 1930s. However, that was a broadcast adaptation of the original H.G. Wells’ novel, The War of the Worlds, which was written in 1897 and set in England. Recognizing that, this story fit right in as a sequel following the events of the original war.
This story is set in the United States in 1907- 08. It ranges from President Roosevelt and his advisers in Washington, to a teen farm girl running from the Martian machines in Arizona/New Mexico area. These characters are connected through the primary character, Andrew Comstock. Andrew is a quickly rising young officer who is involved with bringing the new weapons, tanks and armament, from the labs and factories to the battle field. One of the most interesting elements, I thought, is the point of view shared through the Martian characters which is set up as an effective hook in the prologue.
The early portion of the story focuses on the United States attempting to prepare for a second invasion by the Martians. Interestingly, the author also shows the thoughts of the Martians reacting to the wins and losses during the first wave of the invasion. The weaponry issues, failures and successes, are fitting for the time and totally believable.
The storylines of the characters are natural and engaging. The characters, human and alien, are developed with relatable personalities and none of them are one hundred percent heroic. They manage sometimes to stumble into successful maneuvers. Sharing the battle from the view of the Martians evoked some compassion even while still presenting them as the enemy.
The story moves briskly, first with backstory development, then progressing with good action.
It has an appropriate closing while leaving more battles to be faced in the next book. I plan to continue to see what happens next.
Audio Notes: Ray Greenley does a fine job narrating. He provides good, varied voices for the characters and conveys the fear, arrogance, awe and other emotions through the performance. The narration voice fit the time period nicely. Listening to this enhanced my enjoyment of an interesting story.
I received this audio title from the narrator through AudioBook Boom for an unbiased review. It qualified for 2016 Audio Challenge.
If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.
I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost seven years I have posted 68 groups of 16 (1,088) books to find new homes! (as of November 4, 2016).
I am happy to say that so far about 1,029+ books have found new homes! YAY. I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!
Note rules here regarding international entries.
Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.
I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)
Repeating this helpful blog tip: You can right click on a link and you will be given the choice to open the link in a new window or tab so you do not navigate away from the screen you are on!! I use this all the time!
