What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

It is hard to realize it is the end of June already. How did that happen?
I have been churning out work trying to have things done before I travel up north.
Our daughter-in-law's surgery went well. Sounds scary though. They did get clear margins and were able to work around the nerves in her tongue and shoulder. However, they had to cut a piece of nerve from her leg to replace one they cut in the side of her face. The doctors say it will be a very long recovery time. We are still planning to arrive about the time she will be coming home this week.

No photo today. I wish I had taken a picture mid-day. I went to the mailbox to get the mail. Ususally the dogs love to jog out to the edge of the road with me. Today they sat by the car and watched me. I guess it was too hot for them.

We had several days in the mid 90s this week and it was 95 today. I am hoping the weather won't be too hot for our drive and that all will be safe. This is one of the first times I have felt some fear traveling across our own country. 

I finished 4 books again this week: three audiobooks and one ebook. I posted three reviews and my usual memes.

I visited 20 blogs last week.

I like this author for romantic suspense with faith elements. This has started with good suspense.

June 28, 2020 - I need to do better to keep up daily. I keep going two days behind and then catching up. I need to be in the word every day. I am again enjoying the devotions and readings with the One Year Bible plan through You Version App. I considered changing but this is the reading group that is closest to my husband's reading so we can sometimes discuss the same passages.
I am now doing a six-day study: Ordinary Moments: Small Prayers That Can Change The World.

I completed four books and posted three reviews, putting me one behind.
My NetGalley shelf is now at 5, plus the four titles from 2012-13 which I still hope to read this year.
I'm resisting adding any more NetGalley titles until I get some of my review titles done. I still have one carry over author ebook and two new author ebooks. I expect to pull one of these soon. I have one audiobook from an author and now I have 1 other new audiobook left of four. I need to get caught up on these books.
Still many titles through InstaFreebie and many new author requests I haven't replied to.

Sunday Words of Encouragement June 28, 2020

We shared in praise and worship through our online service again this morning. Pastor’s message this morning focused on the graduates in the Class of 2020 and the question What Next?

This year’s graduates have come through two major interruptions in their high school experience: Hurricane Michael in 2018 and this spring the Coronavirus.
Graduation is one of the important milestones of live. It is also a stage when we look to ‘What comes next?”

This may be one of the times that we cry out “Jesus take the wheel”. Really, we should be letting him always control the wheel.
Proverbs 3:1-26 gives good wisdom for graduates and all of us on how to live. We are reminded to remember what we have been taught. And more importantly, seek His will in all you do.
Seeking His will is the struggle we all have throughout our lives.

This is a good time to ask: Do I believe God designed a life for me? Does He have a perfect plan for me?
Trust God, not you. Seek God's will.
The Psalms tell the ebb and flow of David’s life. Psalms 1 opens with more wisdom for graduates and all of us.

The Church is here to partner the graduate (and the congregant).
Keep growing
Grow in love of God
Grow in word.
Grow in fruit of Spirit.
Grow in generosity.
Grow in wisdom.

This is an older question from Alina: What book/author did you think you'll never like, but people pressured you to try and then you loved it/him/her??

I had a hard time thinking if I had an answer for this question. (I can name some titles/authors I have tried but didn't like and I can name popular authors I haven't tried and probably never will. We'll save those for another SBB.) After review of my Reading Lists and Wrap Ups I would say that these are authors/series I wasn't sure if I would like but I ended up loving:

Larry Correria, Monster Hunter Series

And then there is the genre I didn't know I would like but found I love it: Military Sci Fi.

Review:
Brishen is a ‘spare’ prince, a second son of the Kai. The Kai is a race of people with dark skin, long talon fingers, fang teeth and light-sensitive eyes. They are active at night, sleeping during the day. Brishen’s elder brother is married with several sons so it isn’t likely that Brishen will take over the throne. Still, the kingdom is plagued with raiding enemies and needs to make a treaty to secure favorable trade routes. That means marrying a Gauri noblewoman, no matter how ugly she may be.

Ildiko is a niece of the Gauri king, who has no value other than her royal blood. Ildiko is pale with bright red hair and bright eyes. Her own race finds her beautiful, but the Gauri are unattractive to the Kai. That won’t stop Ildiko from doing her best to serve as a dutiful wife when she marries a Kai prince as part of a treaty.

Ildiko and Brishen meet before the wedding without knowing who the other is. They are honest with their insults and find humor in their exchange. This allows them to become friends rather than complete strangers at the wedding. Brishen and his entourage suffer through the Gauri dinner. When they set out to travel back to the Kai kingdom they are soon attacked by one of the Kai rivals. Ildiko learns that the Kai people have a legacy of magical abilities as well as fierce battle skills.

Ildiko learns more about Brishen and his family when they arrive home and she meets his rather heartless and evil parents. Ildiko refuses to be cowed, standing up to the Queen. This generates anger from the Queen but respect from others. Ildiko has to suffer through some strange food dishes too. But now Ildiko has to worry about threats from the Queen as well as enemies of the Kai.

The friendship between Brishen and Ildiko grows as they spend more time together. They visit a human neighbor and Brishen begins to see Ildiko through another’s eyes. Then they are ambushed and almost lose each other. Will this serve as an opportunity to further their commitment?

I was quickly pulled in by the characters and how they overcame their differences. The lead characters are unique and I totally enjoyed the warmth of their friendship as it grew into love. The traumas and danger within Brishen’s family and the raiding neighbor tribes add to the interest of the story. I will look to read more books by this author. I recommend this to readers who enjoy a warm, fantasy romance.

Audio Notes: Gabrielle Baker did a lovely job with the narration. She provided distinct voices with fitting emotions. I am glad that I got to enjoy the audio.

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost NINE years I have posted 88 groups of 16 plus an additional 21 totaling 1,429 books to find new homes! (as of November 8, 2019).

I am happy to say that so far about 1,317+ books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A year or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Note rules here regarding international entries.

Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors, your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to faraway places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)
