Sharing Beyond Books #137 Comment Giveaway, February 2, 2014

Hello again on Saturday night and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB!
Thanks to everyone who commented last week.

There were six definite "No" an author quote wouldn't influence reading the book with two more "not really" and one "not likely." So I count that as nine "nos." There were four "sometimes" with three more that would look closer for more info and another two who might let the quote to look at reviews. That totals nine "sometimes."  Then there were two that acknowledged small influence by the author quote.

Q1. Liss asks: Where's your "hidden" paradise? A place where you go to read quietly, to think clearly or to have peace..??

A: I really can't think of one place. I don't have a special cushy chair... sort of wish I did. I enjoy going to sleep and waking up with either the MP3 or the Kindle plugged into my ears. And I do read in the (blush) restroom. But mostly I am happy to read wherever I am.  

This looks like a place I could curl up to read!!

Review:
Minnie is struggling through the snow storm and smoke poisoned air to find a doctor to help her daughter, Ivy. She stumbles at a door that is her last resort. Police inspector Seb hears a thud and opens his door to find a small figure fallen on his doorstep. He takes her in and discovers that she is seeking the doctor who lives next door. Seb decides to step in and help by taking Minnie back to her “project” apartment to pick up Ivy.

They discovered the place had been ransacked and Minnie’s friend and sitter has been murdered.
Fortunately they found Ivy hidden away. Now Seb’s interest is really picqued and he decides that Minnie and Ivy will be safest with him while they investigate the murder and the mysterious illness that has Ivy sweating out what looks like black soot.

Seb has an unusual team of investigators to call upon for help - the Order of the Round Table. These are people with special, supernatural skills: enhanced smell, sight and healing touches as well as ability to detect lies, auras and more. His friends are more than happy to add their efforts to find the villain who has been experimenting on young children from a poverty level grade school. The team also suspects that Ivy may have some super ability herself.

I really enjoyed Minnie as a tough, determined character. Though single she ‘adopted’ infant Ivy to raise as her own when her mother, another friend, died.  Minnie couldn’t be anymore fierce and protective than a natural, loving mother. I also loved Seb who is a quite determined investigator who has grown accustomed to his aloneness in life but has buried dreams of family. These two make a wonderful pair in this quick novella that gives a good feel for other characters in the series. There is mystery, suspense, steampunk elements and of course, sweet romance! I definitely want to read more in the series and recommend this to others who like mystery and romance, with or without steampunk.

I have finally updated the intro and Entry paragraphs here:

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in four years I have posted 43 groups of 16 (688) books to find new homes! (as of November 2013).

I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want! I am happy to say that so far about 620+ books have found new homes! YAY. I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed.

Note rules here regarding international entries.

Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $5.00 $7.00 and $6.00 $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

Sean Brennan, a special agent with the newly formed United States Secret Police, sends Assistant US Attorney Haley Hendricks to Ransom, posing as an ecojournalist. Haley is assigned to find a way for the government to seize the thorium mine in the name of “national security,” and Brennan’s orders are to design a plan to get the president to the mine for a photo op and then safely back to the White House. Review:
Jace Fuller is a lonely man struggling to make ends meet in a small, rather isolated Idaho town. He runs a bakery and bow shop during the week, waiting for Sundays when he gets to visit with his 11 year old son, Josh. Jace used to be a sheriff’s deputy but he lost his beloved wife to cancer and then went to prison for a reason that isn’t explained until later in the story. He can’t carry a gun but he is an expert archer and experienced guide.

Sean Brennan is a Special Agent in the USSP, United States Secret Police, which has replaced the FBI and Secret Service.  Sean is close to the current President, Benjamin Franklin Luder, a very unusual man.  Some might call the President “Looter” as he has decimated the country with excessive taxes, crippling policies, and executive decisions that trample liberty.  Luder is a supreme manipulator, playing one official and underling off another. Sean sometimes thinks the country would be better off with Luder dead but it is Sean’s duty to protect the maniacal leader. He plans to do that job in spite of the President’s own insistent plans to make an unprotected visit to a thorium mine in the rugged hills of Idaho, a place of rebellious freedom lovers. 

President Luder has convinced Sean to bring Sean’s old flame, Haley, on the trip to provide a cover story as a vacationing couple. Sean really wants a chance to reconnect with Haley because he regrets having left her a few years before when she went through a mastectomy for breast cancer.  They hope Haley can make connections with Jace Fuller to be their guide because Haley looks just like his deceased wife.

Haley has no clue why she is being sent to Idaho and isn’t thrilled with the orders when she gets them from Sean.  She stills struggles with her self image resulting from his abrupt abandonment. When she meets Jace there is an immediate chemical attraction for them both and she is impressed by the rugged, simple man.

Meanwhile a local vet, Wade, and two other unsavory soldier cohorts are roaming the hills on ATVs fully armed and looking for trouble. Wade is an old rival of Jace and gets in his face repeatedly. Jace has to be careful to control his temper and response so he doesn’t violate parole.

It takes a bit for the pieces of the plot to begin to fit but ultimately they do with excellent twists and curves all falling into place!  It was a very pleasant surprise to realize how all the details fit together. It is one of those twisters that might call for a second read/listen just to anticipate how it all falls together. I thought this started out a bit dry and plodding but once I could see the conspiracy puzzle taking shape I did not want to put it down. I also enjoyed the details about bows and archery. I was sorry when this ended and recommend it to political thriller fans who enjoy such plotlines from authors such as David Baldacci.  I will be glad to look for other thrillers by Kenneth Lewis.

Audio Notes: This began slowly but I soon appreciated the steady narration of Alex Hyde-White. He manages to present the different characters with subtle accents. The plotting was twisted but I never lost where we were or who was speaking through the audio. The good tension and suspense were conveyed and enhanced with the narration.

Chantaya was only three when her beautiful, pregnant mother, Isabella, and her brave father tried to flee the unwanted attentions of the reprehensible young Lord Rosskeene. Unfortunately the stormy night brings an unfortunate accident with an overturned wagon. Eight year old Peyton Wolfgar and his family rescue Chani and her injured mother. Quickly the family learns to adore the little scamp and Chani finds her champion to worship for life.

The family and village help to shelter Isabella and Chani as the know that things are not right with their overlord. As they grow older an intrepid Chani stumbles upon and makes friends with Mordecai, an old knight living in the woods. Mordecai fills their minds with stirring tales of knightly honor while he trains Peyton to battle and even trains Chani to defend herself. Mordecai offers to introduce Peyton to the King’s court and guardsman so that Peyton can proceed with proper training. Peyton is reluctant to leave his family and his precious Chani behind but he knows he must go to serve the King.

Peyton is well-liked and respected for his diligence and loyalty as well as his prowess in training. Meanwhile at home, Chani matures to young womanhood and begins to catch the eyes of the local young men, including Lord Rosskeene’s son, another lech like his father. Lord Rosskeene discovers their hidden cabin and threatens them into working for him at the manor. While working in the kitchen Chani begins to learn of Rosskeene’s traitorous plans to assassinate the King’s family and become the new king.

Peyton and Chani have grown from childhood friends to the edge of passion in their love for each other. But they each have committed to doing everything they can to protect their King and his family...even if it means sacrificing their own lives and future together.

This is a charmingly written story with a delightful hero and heroine. Their young love is sweet, honorable, devoted and the ‘stuff of legends.’ The clear descriptions pulled me into the settings. The danger and treachery is well laid out to keep the adventure moving forward with good suspense. I enjoyed the underlying faith expressed in the simple assurance and trust that the characters placed in God. The reading flows well and makes this is an entertaining romance good for readers who enjoy strong romance, honor and medieval adventure.
