Audiobook Review All Cry Chaos by Leonard Rosen

This is a thrilling mystery with complex philosophical arguments woven in.
by Leonard Rosen
read by Grover Gardner
Book ID(6345) - 10.5 hrs (est.), Published - 09/01/1

Genre:  Mystery and Suspense
My Rating:  4.75 of 5.0
Book Description
Series: Henri Poincare | Publication Date: September 1, 2011
[This is the MP3CD audiobook format.]

All Cry Chaos, a debut thriller by the immensely gifted Leonard Rosen, is a masterful and gripping tale that literally reaches for the heavens.

The action begins when mathematician James Fenster is assassinated on the eve of a long-scheduled speech at a World Trade Organization meeting. The hit is as elegant as it is bizarre. Fenster's Amsterdam hotel room is incinerated, yet the rest of the building remains intact. The murder trail leads veteran Interpol agent Henri Poincare on a high-stakes, world-crossing quest for answers.

Together with his chain-smoking, bon vivant colleague, Serge Laurent, Poincare pursues a long list of suspects: the Peruvian leader of the Indigenous Liberation Front, Rapture-crazed militants, a hedge fund director, Fenster's elusive ex-fiancee, and a graduate student in mathematics. Poincare begins to make progress in America, but there is a prodigious hatred trained on him--some unfinished business from a terrifying former genocide case--and he is called back to Europe to face the unfathomable. Stripped down and in despair, tested like Job, he realizes the two cases might be connected--and he might be the link.

This first installment in the Henri Poincare series marries sharp, smart mystery to deep religious themes that will keep both agnostics and believers turning pages until the shattering revelatory end. Anyone who enjoys the work of John le Carre, Scott Turow, Dan Brown, and Stieg Larsson will relish Rosen's storytelling and his resourceful, haunted protagonist. Others will appreciate his dazzling prose. Still others, the way he bends the thriller form in unconventional ways toward a higher cause, in the vein of Henning Mankell in The Man from Beijing. In short, All Cry Chaos promises to become a critical success that garners a broad readership throughout the nation and across the globe.
Review:
Henri Poincare is an Interpol agent using police protocol and years of observational investigative expertise to get the criminals. Although he is dedicated to his work he also has a warm relationship with his eccentric, artist wife, his brilliant son and his adorable grandchildren who love their “Popi.”

Poincare’s great-grandfather was Jules Henri Poincare, a noted 19th-century French mathematician and philosopher.  Oddly, Poincare’s newest case involves the assassination of another renowned mathematician, James Fenster.  The murder involved unique rocket fuel accelerate so there are leads to follow even though there is little of the body left to work with.

Fenster was a brilliant man whose work was supported by a wealthy financier.  He was scheduled to speak at a World Trade Organization Conference although it wasn’t quite clear how he was going to mix mathematics with the economy of globalization.

Meanwhile there are terrorist and suicide bombings being committed by a radical group of Christian believers. These fanatics think causing chaos will bring the rapture quicker and they are counting down the days.

A war criminal whom Poincare put into jail threatens Poincare’s own family.  Poincare is torn between his desire to protect his family and his need to track down leads after letting an important witness slip.  Tragedy strikes and it isn’t clear if Poincare can recover or if he himself might sink to acts of violent vengeance.

Poincare travels through Europe and America picking up clues and racing against time. The murder investigation crosses with the radical attacks and he faces those preaching God’s messages in earnest with a deadline in sight.  Other witnesses present mathematical modeling and theories of structure and pattern that defy chaos even as humankind seems to create and dwell in chaos.

I enjoyed the Biblical references and the philosophical arguments. Poincare is a classic, detail oriented investigator with a younger more impulsive, partner as his sounding board and protector.  Poincare has to search out the “who and why” of the crimes while coping with personal tragedy and  broader questions of why things happen and what life is about.

The writing is crisp and well suited to the twists in the mystery where suspects are not as expected. There is a subtle wit that helps the flow especially since the mathematics, philosophy and tragedy add complexity.

I listened to this on MP3 Audio and found it a great performance by Grover Gardner.  I recognized Gardner’s easy flow and grasp of wit from other audiobooks. However after the first hour or so Gardner was able to capture Poincare’s own character so that I forgot about prior narrations. Gardner does a great job delivering the suspense, misery, weariness, complexity and action of the story.

If you are a mystery fan of twisted clues, and willing to puzzle some mathematical and religious arguments, I highly recommend this. I hope there will be more Poincare stories to come in the future.

Some brief quotes that I liked and jotted while listening:
Two levels below street grade ... turned out to be a graveyard for cellular signals.
Failure woke him up to himself.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? December 5, 2011

This meme starts at Book Journey!
What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

Reading seemed slow in this busy week - I finished three and almost one other (the ebook).  I posted four reviews and three giveaways.  Plus I posted my regular Friday Pick Giveaway; Saturday Sharing Beyond Books, and Sunday posts.

Looks like I will keep posting four reviews trying to keep up.  :-)

I did get to visit two handfuls of blogs early last week - which was good since I didn't get to visit at all later in the week. I'm still really busy at work and my assistant was out sick. Plus I had company this weekend. This week will continue to be busy as I try to get lots of work done before the end of the year.
These were last week's posts plus Winner posts not listed.

Book Description
Series: A Novel | Publication Date: November 9, 2011
Andy Sommerville seems no different than others in his rural Virginia community, but what sets him apart is that his best friend is an angel. The angel is God's answer to a childhood prayer Andy offered to a twinkling star that his deceased mother once called "the door to heaven." The first angelic proclamation instructs Andy to find the wooden keepsake box in his grandparents' attic. Over the years, he directs Andy to fill it with apparently meaningless objects from twelve people with who Andy randomly crosses paths.
Andy's world is turned upside down when a brutal attack leaves Andy burned and the boy he loved as a son dead. At this crucial juncture, the angel abandons him to loneliness and pain. All that remains is the wooden box Andy has always kept safe, and a new angel, who will use its contents to reveal truth to him as a result, he discovers the defining truth of his life, new hope in the community he loves, and greater trust in the God who sustains him.
The story is told from Andy's hospital bed, where he awakes feeling God has abandoned him. Without being preachy or saccharine, the author brings the small town to life and reveals a spiritual secret--the presence of angels--that helps a wounded man discover the defining truth of his life, place new hope in the community he loves, and trust totally in the God who sustains him. Sunday Words of Encouragement December 4, 2011

Today is the second Sunday in Advent.  Our service reflected this as the Candle of Joy.
Our wonderful guest minister came with a message of gladness, praising God for the blessings. He says we may all have a story of sadness - like the fact that he was arrested many years ago and should have been in jail. But with the many ways God has blessed him and his family he focuses on sharing the gladness.

Prepare our hearts
and remove the sadness
that hinders us from feeling
the joy and hope
which His presence
will bestow.

Verses for Today
Luke 1: 46-47
46 And Mary said:    “My soul glorifies the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

I hope my internet/blog friends will focus on glad things and not sad things during this Christmas season.

Sharing Beyond Books #25 December 3, 2011

Hello all - Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books!  It's Saturday evening and I am slipping this in as I have company (my sister and one of my nieces) visiting.
Thank you for commenting last week.

We had a pretty mixed group on favorite mythologies. Lots of two and three votes and some couldn't pick and scottsgal avoids them. :-)  Ricki had the unique pick with Australian myths.

I guess we all enjoy the hops to some extent but we all agree it takes too long to enter. Krystal is the most industrious to get through most of the list. I hope you won something. I actually won a two blogs. One was Birgit's after she was sweet enough to send an email reminding me to enter hers too! LOL Thanks again Birgit!

The Winner from SBB #24 comments is: #7 Sarah. There are still 9 'love' books to pick from, 4 Christmas choices and 2 Summer titles below so Sarah please choose a book from the remaining Love Books List for Giveaway or remaining Christmas Giveaway Books, the one summer book below OR pick from the ARC box and let me know your choice, your address and a choice of bookmarks by completing the WINNER FORM.

WEEK #25 Questions

Q1. This week I picked mamabunny13's Q which has two Qs:  [A] A lot of people associate holidays with food but what is your ALL TIME favorite anytime meal and how often do you get to indulge?

[B] Okay, I also have to  know what your favorite holiday dish is :D??
A:  I think I have to go with a tie for my ALL TIME Favorite meal ... and anytime meal and how often don't go together for this one for me. Now my two favs are often served together but it is hard to eat that much anymore. My favs? Filet Mignon (rare!) and lobster tail with melted butter. So okay - a Surf and Turf photo works!  It seems I only get this about once a year - at least the lobster part. The filet I get maybe three times because my DH will buy them or my Dad loves to serve them or we'll eat out at a good restaurant once in a while.

B. My favorite holiday dish? Still thinking...Okay I will choose Sand Tart Cookies since I love them and they remind me of my mother.

Q2. I know that not everyone celebrates Christmas but you might celebrate another seasonal holiday like Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Twelfth Night, Boxing Day, Ephipany or maybe something else. If you are from "downunder" do you celebrate Christmas now which is your summertime? I would like to know what is your favorite decoration for the holiday that you celebrate this month??

A:  I had to think about this and decide between the Christmas lights and the Christmas tree.  I chose the tree because that includes lights and ornaments that I love. :-)
This was last year's tree which actually did not have some of my favorite ornaments but Heather helped put it up when I was too busy so it was lovely for that thoughtfulness.

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask.  Input suggestions in this Suggested Question FormAt the end of each month I will draw from the suggestions I used the month before and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions but some of you others might want to get in a question or two as we have a few people submitting most of the questions so far.  Either way - it works for me. :-)

Your turn to share:

1. mamabunny13 asks:

[A] A lot of people associate holidays with food but what is your ALL TIME favorite anytime meal and how often do you get to indulge??
[B] Okay, I also have to know what your favorite holiday dish is :D??

2.  What is your favorite decoration for the holiday that you celebrate this month??

SBB Comment Winners can choose a selection from the remaining  Valentine and "Love" books or the remaining Christmas Giveaway Books - there are still about 14 books available plus 2 left in the Summer titles to choose from. Also I have added the Review and ARC Box now.

My copy is a paperback from 2006
