Book Description
Release date: June 25, 2013 | Series: House of Trent (Book 1)
THE DUKE'S DESIRE
Simon Hawkins, duke of Trent, is no stranger to scandal. Rumors and innuendo have darkened the House of Trent for decades, and it has fallen to Simon to restore his tattered family name. He lives by a strict code of honor, but when he is called home to investigate his mother's disappearance, the distinguished duke will tangle with temptation. For there waits the only woman he has ever loved-and the last woman he should desire . . .

Sarah Osborne has spent her life dreaming of Simon's touch. But dukes do not long for lady's maids-or so Sarah believes, until a stolen kiss sparks a passion that could be her ultimate undoing. As the couple begins a forbidden romance, a cunning enemy plots to destroy the duke and everything he loves. Now, caught in a blackmailer's web, Simon faces an agonizing choice: sacrifice his family's future or break Sarah's heart.

Review:
Sarah is the gardener’s daughter. As a precocious youngster she was rescued from an attacking blackberry bush by the ‘lord of the manor’, a young Simon. He took her into the house for medical care and his eccentric mother welcomed her to the family clan for schooling and play time. She grew up with the five boys and little baby Esme as playmates even though she ultimately became a housemaid dreaming impossible dreams about loving Simon.

Simon is serious and dedicated to restoring the family reputation after the scandals his promiscuous parents made of their lives. Nearing 30 he realizes that it is time for him to seek a proper wife. Problem is he has difficulty being attracted by any woman but Sarah even when he is in London and she is home on the family estate.

Simon is called home and gathers all of his siblings because their mother, with her man and maidservant, has disappeared. There is no sign of struggle and it is possible that she took off for an unannounced visit but it is unlikely that she would worry the family with no word at all. Simon begins a different ‘Duchess Hunt.’ He decides to investigate in London and takes along Esme with Sarah now elevated to the position of Lady Companion.

Sarah is strong and calm and helps to steady Esme who is uncomfortable in society settings. But residing in the same house presents a strong temptation for Simon and Sarah. At first Simon is reluctant to ‘dally’ with a servant even though he doesn’t think of her as such. But Sarah has weighed the costs and accepted that she wants a season with Simon before he moves on to marry someone else.

A local peer coerces Simon into a marriage proposal for his suitable young daughter. Simon feels  nothing.for the girl who has clearly been groomed to marry nobility.  Simon is too honorable to continue the liaison with Sarah and Sarah learns that having an affair without losing one’s heart is easier said than done.

I liked the underlying touch of mystery with the mother’s disappearance and the facts used to blackmail Simon. I particularly liked how Ms. Haymore found a way to face the blackmail and how the family pulls together. The Duchess is not yet found by the end of the story but there are solid leads to follow.

Simon and Sarah make a warm pair. The sexual interaction is pretty steamy although done with a premise of love and discovery. I enjoyed not only the primary characters in this story but also the secondary characters. I especially like the eldest, illegitimate brother, Sam, the out of control angry, second son, Luke, and the resilient, if timid, Esme. The other two brothers, Mark and Theo, have warm personalities too. I look forward to more stories to continue with the other siblings. I recommend this story to historical romance fans who especially like a touch of Cinderella happiness.

This is the second book for June 1 spotlight event. I received this book from Forever/Hachette for an honest review.
I am happy to be participating in a Blog tour for this title and What a Wicked Earl Wants by Vicky Dreiling.

TWICE TEMPTED

Serena Donovan left London six years ago, her heart broken and her reputation ruined by devilishly handsome Jonathan Dane. Now, with her family's future in peril, she reluctantly agrees to return to England and assume her late twin's identity. The price? Marry a man she doesn't love and spend the rest of her days living a lie.

Jonathan Dane, Earl of Stratford, has become an incorrigible rake, drinking, gambling-and trying to forget Serena Donovan. Yet the moment he's introduced to the prim and proper "Meg", he recognizes the sensual young woman who captured his heart. Haunted by his past mistakes, he refuses to lose Serena again. But convincing her to trust him is no easy task. Claiming his lost love means exposing the truth and destroying the life Serena has sacrificed everything to rebuild. With the future of all the Donovans at stake, and their undying passion capable of triggering yet another scandal, how much will Jonathan and Serena risk for a chance at true love?
Review: This is an engaging story with interesting characters.

Wild Serena and her proper twin sister Meg were only 18 when they came from Antigua to London. Their mother’s plan was for them to wed rich and respectable husbands so they could help introduce their younger sisters in another year or two.  Serena lost her heart, and her reputation, to the deliciously devilish Jonathan Dane. He professed to love Serena but as a younger son he bent to the threats of his father who insisted he end their relationship. After Serena and Jonathan were caught in a compromising situation he turned away from her forcing  Serena and Meg to return home in disgrace.

Meg had developed a tendre and romantic relationship with a straight laced naval conspired for Serena to return to London as Meg and marry Captain Langley. Serena knows her family is depending on her and that her only hope to reenter society is to pose as the respectable twin. She has quieted since Meg’s death and the guilt of her impetuous youth weighs heavily. Surely she can learn to love Meg’s fiancĂ©. But can she ever forget her passionate love for the man who betrayed her?

Jonathan was young himself when he cowardly abandoned Serena to scandal.  He has spent the past six years trying to drown his guilt in debauchery.  Surprisingly he and Captain Langley have become close friends.  Although it is difficult he will support Langley in his wedding plans. That is until he sees Meg and knows in his heart that it is really Serena. Now he must find a way to make her trust that he will never abandon her again and that they can find a way to be together.

The chemistry between Serena and Jonathan is lush.  Serena tries to avoid him and even more to resist him. Jonathan is relentless in his efforts to get her to admit that she is truly Serena and to convince her to give him a second chance. I can’t say I was comfortable with the deception and the impact it would have on Langley but the story kept me interested wondering how the masquerade would be resolved.  I enjoyed the side romance of Serena’s younger sister, Phoebe, who seems headed for the same destruction as Serena when she becomes infatuated with a younger son known for gambling and womanizing.  The story moves at a good pace with engaging characters.

Forever Romantic Holiday Giveaway - Four Books!

What's better than a ONE Book Giveaway? How about FOUR Books for THREE Winners??!!

Thanks to Forever Romance at Hachette I am hosting a giveaway with books from Four authors you are probably familiar with. I know I have had reviews and giveaways of books by three of them. Great romances to curl up with on a snowy night.

A reclusive widow known for her scientific scholarship, Lady Ciara Sheffield is shadowed by rumors that she poisoned her husband . . . A rakehell rogue notorious for his devil-may-care antics, Lucas Bingham--the Earl of Hadley--is not accused of murdering anything--save for the rules of Polite Society. The only thing they have in common is seeing their names featured in the lurid gossip columns of London's newspapers. Until an ancient manuscript draws them together.

Ciara needs a titled fiancé to quell the slanderous speculations which may send her to the gallows. Lucas needs brilliant scholar to help his elderly uncle decipher the secrets of the mysterious manuscript. So when her friends urge her to accept the earl's proposal of a temporary alliance, Ciara decides that she has no choice but to make a deal with the Devil. And so begins a seductive dance of sinful pleasures and hidden desires as the two of them waltz through the mansions of Mayfair. Lies, intrigue, treachery, sex. They find themselves facing slanderous whispers, unscrupulous relatives-not to speak of their own simmering passions, which quickly ignite into dangerous flames. It's a potent mix and the result may be explosive-and perhaps deadly-if they don't watch their step.

The last thing Garrett, Duke of Calton, expects to find while tracking his sworn enemy is the delectable, mysterious Kate. This beautiful servant girl rouses a longing the battle-scarred ex-soldier had never hoped to feel again. But when she turns out to be the sister of the man he seeks, he's convinced he's been betrayed.

Kate knows her duty to her family, yet how can she ignore Garrett's powerful pull on her heart? Or the heady temptation of his stolen-and sizzling-kisses? Scandal has followed the duke since the war. Now the greatest shock of all is on its way-the one that can separate Garrett and Kate forever.

FROM FANTASY TO ECSTASY Ruby Scott is a beautiful, quiet event planner who leads an oh-so-respectable life. Yet the things that go on in her secret fantasies are anything but. She has every intention of keeping her hidden desires under wraps-until she meets a gorgeous, hard-muscled man ten years her junior. Mark St. Crow is a gifted, up-and-coming musician who collects erotic art and loves to "play" women as much as his piano. After one night of uninhibited passion, Ruby realizes there's no turning back.

Defending Her Was His Duty

Skilled with a sword and quick with her wit, Scottish rebel Claire Stuart cannot be tamed. And nothing can deter her from rescuing her beloved sister and saving them both from arranged marriages--not even the handsome Highlander who vows to protect Claire. His scorching gaze and fiery kiss bring her to the brink of surrender, but she belongs to no man...

Seducing Her Would Be His Reward

Graham Grant has had his share of lasses. But he has never met one as headstrong or as bonnie as Claire--or one with such desperate, dangerous plans. Helping her could betray his honor, his country, and more. Graham can't claim her. Yet everything in him says: Take her, make her yours, teach her pleasure, and never let her go.

Blog Tour Q&A INTERVIEW with Jennifer Haymore, author of A Season of Seduction

Today I am pleased to welcome Jennifer Haymore, author of A Season of Seduction. Won't you please join us with comments or questions.

MQ1.  When did you decide to turn your love of reading into a writing a career and how did you go about it?

JH:  I have always loved to write, but I had always heard how difficult it was to become published, and that discouraged me for a long time. When I was younger, being a published author seemed to be a farfetched dream. But I still wrote. I’d finished an entire novel before looking at the business side of writing, and it was only then, after my daughter was born, that I thought it just might be possible for me to make a career out of this.

MQ2.  What made you choose to write in the genre of Historical romance?

JH:  Before I ever started reading romance, I read historical fiction. I eventually realized that my favorite parts of the historical fiction books I was reading were the love stories. So, since it was a combination of my two favorite things to read, historical romance ultimately struck me as the perfect thing to write.

MQ3.  Do you have any rituals that help you get in the mood to sit down and write?

JH:  There are a few things that help me to get in the mood:
(1)  Sitting down with my long, eclectic playlist on my iPod
(2)  Having a comfortable chair
(3)  Being away from my kids (i.e. no distractions!)
(4)  Having a hot, tall cup of coffee or tea nearby

MQ4.  I noted that you list favorite authors, books and movies at your website. Do you ever picture particular actors or actresses as you write your characters - either before or after completion of the story?

JH:  I very rarely do this. The characters turn into flesh and blood in my mind (as I hope they do in the readers’ minds) and I always have a very difficult time when people ask me to cast my books, because I can never find the actors and actresses who exactly fit the image in my head!

MQ5.  When you do a series do you have each book plotted out before you start the first one or do the subsequent books flow from the first book?

JH:  Generally speaking, the subsequent books flow from the first. As I wrote A HINT OF WICKED, I realized I’d have to write Becky’s story someday. I’m working on my second 3-book series now. I just finished the first one, and as I wrote it, the third story’s plot and characters came to life in my mind.

MQ6.  Is there an ancillary character you have had the most fun with so far in your books?

JH:  I love Lady Beatrice, the grouchy aunt and matriarch of the duke’s family. She is so vivid to me, and she has her own wild and delicious background that’s vaguely hinted at in the books.

MQ7.  I realize you have personal experience in the battle against cancer.  During this National Cancer Awareness Month do you have any special encouragements or comments that you would like to share?

JH:  This battle I’ve had has changed my life in so many ways. I feel blessed to have been surrounded by the support and love of so many people.
I don’t think I’ve come across anyone who hasn’t been affected in one way or another by cancer. Great strides are being made in treatment as we speak, however, and I hope one day soon we’ll be able to cure all forms of this disease.

MQ8.  If you could have readers finish a sentence what would it be?

JH:  The one thing that makes a romance a keeper is…

M:  Thank you so much and blessings to you.

JH:  Thanks so much for having me!

Please check out my review of A Season of Seduction and enter the Giveaway for a chance to win the book.

Book Review: A Season of Seduction by Jennifer Haymore

Product Description
Although the widowed Lady Rebecca has sworn off marriage, men are another matter. London's cold winter nights have her dreaming of warmer pursuits-like finding a lover to satisfy her hungry heart. Someone handsome, discreet, and most importantly as uninterested in marriage as she is. Someone like Jack Fulton.

A known adventurer and playboy, Jack seems like the perfect choice. There's just one problem: Jack isn't interested in an affair. He needs the beautiful, mysterious Lady Rebecca to be his wife. And he doesn't have much time to persuade her. A secret from Jack's past is about to surface, and by Christmas Day he'll be either married to Rebecca or dead. (2010)

Review: Once I hit midway in this book I did not put it down until the end.

I struggled with the beginning of the book which has a brief introduction of “bluestocking” Rebecca getting ready to meet Jack at a discreet hotel for her first night with a man since the death of her husband four years earlier. Jack is introduced with his more manipulative and permanent plans. The story then slides right into a 35 page seduction scene. Things get more interesting when the plot thickens as the love making is interrupted by Rebecca’s brother, cousin and a group of witnesses. Now Rebecca’s reputation is in an uproar but Jack moves forward to do the right thing and offer for her.

It is understandable that Rebecca has major issues of trust resulting from a very bad first marriage. It is more difficult to understand how she expects to ignore the scandal.  Rebecca is more discreet than the blurb implies but she is pretty determined that she will not be pushed into marriage to a man she really doesn’t know.

Jack wants more than Becky’s money but he started out with lies and now has to overcome his original motive without her finding out.  Jack saved the book for me as he sets out to woo Becky and convince her to marry him.  He really is a charmer, not a rogue, but he is in a dilemma because he needs to marry her quickly and get to her dowry funds in less than six weeks. He would be patient with her but he just doesn’t have the time.

The second half of the book just sped by with the unique courtship, romance, tension and betrayal.  I was caught up to learn how they scramble out of the mess that Jack’s behavior caused.  Rebecca shows a lot of spunk to cope with the pain and loneliness and subsequent chance for forgiveness.

I had trouble with the cynical character of Rebecca’s close friend, Cecilia. She appears to flaunt the rules of society with her loose liaisons and yet there was no indication of trouble with the gossips and she was easily welcomed into Becky’s family.  That just didn’t ring right to me.

I enjoyed the plot as it developed around Rebecca’s lack of trust and Jack’s courage and determination.  There was plenty of conflict to keep it interesting and to have me rooting for the couple to get together.
