Martha's Bookshelf***Friday Pick Giveaway June 10, 2022

Happy Friday!
TO ENTER FRIDAY PICK.
I am enjoying a couple days visit with my daughter and granddaughters staying with me.
I have listed the new books and will try to get a picture on Friday or Saturday.
I'm mindful I need to get GC wins out sooner than later. Hopefully I can get to that this month.

US Entrants: Leave a comment and tell me WHICH BOOK you would like to get from the Friday Pick lists.

INTERNATIONAL: Leave a comment indicating "Gift Card" (see further comments near the end of the post.)

CUT OFF TIME IS THURSDAY NIGHTS AT 9:00 PM CENTRAL so I do not have to stay up too late to do the winner post! I will randomly pick two winners to announce Friday mornings with the next Pick post.

Thank you to all who entered the June 3, 2022 Pick. There was one automatic win this past week. Automatic wins are those who requested the book four times without other people asking for that book during those weeks. There were no titles blocked.
BN100 gets After the Light

CONGRATULATIONS to:
(There were only 6 entries after the Auto Win so only one pick this week)

Random.org picked Winner from June 3, 2022 Pick:
  FREDAMANS gets a GC

All winners please fill in the Winner's Acceptance Form or email me to confirm your win, send your snail mail address information and let me know if you would like bookmarks - sensual, sexy or sweet bookmarks. {The form is new because Google changed their forms and the old one wasn't letting me print out the responses.}

I am a BIG fan of Audiobooks. How about you?

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost TWELVE years I have posted 91 groups of mostly 16 books plus an additional 21 totaling approximately 1,535 books available to find new homes! (As of November 26, 2021).

I am happy to say that so far at least 1,396 books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A year or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Note rules here regarding international entries.
Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, TWRP, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors, your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to faraway places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

Repeating this helpful blog tip: You can right click on a link and you will be given the choice to open the link in a new window or tab so you do not navigate away from the screen you are on!! I use this all the time!

Audible by Book Review: You Have the Right to Remain Innocent by James Duane

I needed to listen to this book! So do you!
You Have the Right to Remain Innocent
By: James Duane
Narrated by: James Duane

You Have the Right to Remain Innocent By cover art

Length: 2 hrs and 34 mins
Release date: 09-20-16
Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Genre: Civil Rights & Liberties, Constitution, Legal System
My Rating: 4.75 of 5.0 Overall; Story 4.75; Narration 4.75.

Publisher's Summary
Law professor James J. Duane became a viral sensation thanks to a 2008 lecture outlining the reasons why you should never agree to answer questions from the police - especially if you are innocent and wish to stay out of trouble with the law. In this timely, relevant, and pragmatic new book, he expands on that presentation, offering a vigorous defense of every citizen's constitutionally protected right to avoid self-incrimination. Getting a lawyer is not only the best policy, Professor Duane argues, it's also the advice law-enforcement professionals give their own kids.
Using actual case histories of innocent men and women exonerated after decades in prison because of information they voluntarily gave to police, Professor Duane demonstrates the critical importance of a constitutional right not well or widely understood by the average American. Reflecting the most recent attitudes of the Supreme Court, Professor Duane argues that it is now even easier for police to use your own words against you. This lively and informative guide explains what everyone needs to know to protect themselves and those they love.

Review:
I’m an attorney and I have heard the rules: don’t represent yourself, don’t ask questions you don’t know the answer to and don’t talk to the police. And of course, the last time I studied criminal law was in college – maanny years ago. So, I thought it would be helpful to listen to this book.

I believe in telling the truth…so why not be cooperative and answer questions? No! There are only two questions you answer when the police come calling – and you are to be respectful. Then you say four simple words – clearly. Not a variation of the right words – only the exact right phrase.

Duane uses real-to-life examples to support his arguments. And they do make good sense. I really do appreciate the advice. Still, I can see why it would be hard to follow. I do plan to make my grandchildren (the three teens) listen to this book. It is important and I recommend it to everyone!

Audio Notes: James Duane narrates his own work with a fine voice and sincere delivery. I was glad to be able to enjoy the short listen. (Although the print version may be good to keep around and share.)

Sunday Post June 5, 2022/It's Monday! What are You Reading? Plus Mailbox Monday June 6, 2022

Sunday Post #318 Chairs, Compliance, and Storms
I am linking with Sunday Post at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? now at The Book Date (at Wordpress)
What Are You Reading? is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

By end of the week we felt we had made progress at work even though Monday was a holiday.
Speaking of progress, my office building is making headway. Here is an image of ceiling in, walls painted and brick uncovered. They are working on carpet, lighting, toilets and the built-in receptionist desk. Maybe two to three more months?

I continue my previous prayer list.
.
We continue to have rain and heat. Then it cleared up beautifully. We are projected to have temps from 85 to 94 with scattered thunderstorms.

I enjoyed some listening this week but didn't get as much as I'd like. (I was working a little at night and tired a lot). I finished one audio book, half of another, and 3 hours of another CLE course.  I posted four reviews, and my usual memes.

I was glad to visit 17 blogs last week.
A Shout Out today to CARLA LOVES TO READ. Carla is "a retired elementary school principal/teacher/teacher-librarian" who cares about children’s literature and looks like she is reading and reviewing a nice variety. Stop by and say "Hello."

Audible offerings for free children's titles ended June 30, 2021.
Audiobooks.com is still sharing some free listens for children.

These were last week's posts:
  • ATBR: Audible Book Review: Unbowed, Lee Hardin, Book 5 by D. J. Molles; Genre: Action & Adventure, Military Sci Fi, Post-Apocalyptic; My Rating: 4.25 of 5.0 Overall; Story 4.25; Narration 4.5.

Three More Jack Reacher Novellas
Written by Lee Child
Narrated by Dick Hill
Run Time 8h 9min
I like Jack Reacher and I think I will enjoy this.
Source: 8/14/2021 Chirp Under $2.00.

Publisher Description
Lee Child once again demonstrates his mastery of the thriller genre with an unbeatable collection of three Jack Reacher novellas and six short stories, together for the first time in one pulse-pounding collection from the #1 New York Times bestselling author
Too Much Time: In this original novella featuring Jack Reacher after his time in the army, Reacher finds himself in a hollowed-out town in Maine. He witnesses a random bag-snatching but sees much more than a simple crime, in a tale that leads into Lee Child’s new Reacher novel, The Midnight Line.

Small Wars: Lee Child goes back to 1989, when Jack Reacher is an MP assigned to solve the cold-blooded murder of a young officer.
The telex is brief and to the point: One active-duty personnel found shot to death ten miles north of Fort Smith. Circumstances unknown. The victim was shot twice in the chest and once in the head. A professional hit. The crime scene suggests an ambush. Military police officer Jack Reacher is given the case. He calls his older brother, Colonel Joe Reacher, at the Pentagon for intel and taps Sergeant Frances Neagley to help him answer the big question: Who would kill a brilliant officer on the fast-track to greatness?

Not a Drill: Jack Reacher is on the road, hitching a ride with some young Canadians who are planning a hike through the dense forests of Maine. They part ways after sharing a hot meal, and Reacher checks out a quiet town surrounded by countryside serene enough to cool even his raging wanderlust. But not for long. First the trail is suddenly closed. Then the military police show up in force. Maybe it’s a drill. Or maybe it’s trouble-the kind of trouble that always finds Reacher, no matter how far he travels off the beaten path.

And for the first time on audio, additional stories featuring Jack Reacher, including: James Penney’s New Identity, Everyone Talks, Maybe They Have a Tradition, Guy Walks into a Bar, No Room at the Motel, and The Picture of the Lonely Diner

June 5, 2022 - I am still getting caught up on videos I missed while we had no internet at home. The Bible Reading Plan is: BibleProject | One Story that Leads to Jesus. I am enjoying keeping up with my reading each day.
I'll look for a new study maybe next month.

I completed one book for review. Now I am down to only three reviews to write and post.
NO CHANGE -- My NetGalley shelf is back to the three old ebook titles. I will probably end up letting A Place Called Armageddon go as DNF.
I don't have any author reviews in my queue right now.
(Plus a few that I received from Facebook links and newsletter sign-ups, not specific review requests.)
Still many titles through InstaFreebie and many new author requests I haven't replied to.

Welcome to Mailbox Monday.

Mailbox Monday is a gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week and explore great book blogs. This Meme started with Marcia at A Girl and Her Books (fka The Printed Page) and after a tour of hosts has returned to its permanent home at Mailbox Monday. Thanks to the ladies sharing hosting duties: Serena of Savvy Verse & Wit, me and new to the team, Velvet at vvb32reads. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

No new review books.
I picked two for one credit at Audiobooks.com as I had a credit that would expire by 6/5.
I did pick up the Audible Daily Deal today.

Sunday Words of Encouragement June 5, 2022

Our Sunday School group prayed for many local needs as well as the families in Uvalde and the situation in Ukraine. Our secondary leader then showed an excellent message from Tim Sheets about Israel and Moses. The message was for Memorial Day and focused on Moses last sermons and exhortations to the people. Moses told the people to Love God and teach his word to the next generations. 'Speak about the commandments while you sit at home, while you walk, when you go to sleep and when you wake up’! Deuteronomy 6:4-9.
The nation that obeys will be blessed -- or cursed if it disobeys. Deuteronomy 28:1-13.
Be mindful -- we have the same God today.

In service we recognized seven of our eight graduates (one went off last week to Basic training) and four college graduates. We were also recognizing Missions Sunday (the first Sunday each month). It is also Pentecost Sunday.

We had a guest speaker who is highly involved in the Fire Bible program. He noted that the Fire Bible is a Pentecostal Study Bible – based on relying on the Holy Spirit. It has now been translated into 60 languages and it is the most used study Bible.

As Christ followers it is important to be filled with the Spirit and to allow the Spirit to work in you and through you. He compared the Spirit with a guest rather than a homeowner. A guest is invited to limited rooms and limited closets and drawers. The homeowner can go in any room and open any drawers. What access have we given the Spirit in our lives?

Ephesians 5:18 tells us to be filled with the Spirit. This verse tells us four features of the Holy Spirit:

1. It is an imperative.
2. It is continual (and gives evidence the Spirit is alive in us).
3. It is for everyone.
4. It is the work of God.

We can also identify four reasons why we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit:
1. The Spirit helps you overcome your past. The Holy Spirit gives us strength to walk away from the negative temptations as we exercise reverence towards God.
2. The Spirit allows you to overcome the trials and tests of the world. He is with you so you are not left comfortless. John 14:16-18.
3. The Spirit helps you find your destiny. He has a work for you! John 16:13.
4. The Spirit makes you able to win your world for Jesus. Luke 24:49.
Pray for baptism in the Holy Spirit.
Believe it and receive it.

I found this song today: Spirit Lead/Spirit Break Out.
Verses for Today
Ephesians 5:18-20 NIV
18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Holy Spirit – Thank You for always being with me and being my comforter.

be filled with the Spirit
