Book Description
Publication Date: July 1, 2014
In this poignant novel of longing and salvation, a hopeful widow and a resilient war hero discover the promise of love’s magic and new beginnings.
After surviving the Napoleonic Wars, Sir Benedict Harper is struggling to move on, his body and spirit in need of a healing touch. Never does Ben imagine that hope will come in the form of a beautiful woman who has seen her own share of suffering. After the lingering death of her husband, Samantha McKay is at the mercy of her oppressive in-laws—until she plots an escape to distant Wales to claim a house she has inherited. Being a gentleman, Ben insists that he escort her on the fateful journey.
Ben wants Samantha as much as she wants him, but he is cautious. What can a wounded soul offer any woman? Samantha is ready to go where fate takes her, to leave behind polite society and even propriety in her desire for this handsome, honorable soldier. But dare she offer her bruised heart as well as her body? The answers to both their questions may be found in an unlikely place: in each other’s arms.

Review:
Samantha is a young widow who has spent most of her marriage nursing her injured, unfaithful husband. She feels suffocated by her in-laws and their strict propriety. She longs for freedom, or even just a walk in the meadow to get fresh air.

Sir Benedict Harper was a career officer, a respected major in the Napoleonic Wars, until he almost lost his legs. The doctors said he would never walk again. Ben has struggled through rehabilitation with the help and encouragement of six other friends, all members of the Survivor’s Club.

Ben is out riding when he almost jumps on a young woman dressed in severe black with an ugly hound dog. He learns from his sister that the mourning lady is Samantha. Ben and Samantha begin a slow friendship which is encouraged by Ben’s sister but shocking to Samantha’s sister-in-law, Matilda. Matilda storms home and a few days later servants of the Earl, Samantha’s father-in-law, arrive to announce they will take Samantha back to live with the Earl in his strict household. Samantha is faced with returning to a dismal life, caged by her in-laws, or traveling alone to claim the small, perhaps dilapidated, cottage in Wales which she has inherited from her mother’s estranged aunt.

Ben insists on escorting Samantha on the trip to Wales and their friendship and companionship grows. They are reluctant to part ways when they arrive. But Samantha has inherited more than she expected and Ben needs to find a new meaning for his life since he can no longer be an officer.

Ms. Balogh has the wonderful ability to draw me into the lives of her characters and to weave a totally believable love story. These are wonderful, warm characters of strength and integrity. I loved the gentle growth of their attraction. I also enjoyed the independent philosophies that spurred them to seek more from life. The story is rich in detail and sweet, emotional moments of sorrow and joy. I found this story charming and delightful.

If you like historical romance and haven’t read Ms. Balogh you are missing a real treat. I recommend this story and highly recommend this author.

I received this title from the publisher through NetGalley.

Audible Book Review: Tricked: The Iron Druid Chronicles, Book 4 by Kevin Hearne

Oberon, the Irish wolfhound, plays a big role in making this fourth book fun.
Tricked: The Iron Druid Chronicles, Book 4
Written by: Kevin Hearne
Narrated by: Luke Daniels

Length: 10 hrs and 41 mins
Series: Iron Druid Chronicles, Book 4
Format: Unabridged
Release Date:04-24-12
Publisher: Random House Audio
Genre: Urban Fantasy, Fantasy
My Rating: 4.25 of 5.0

Publisher's Summary
Druid Atticus O’Sullivan hasn’t stayed alive for more than two millennia without a fair bit of Celtic cunning. So when vengeful thunder gods come Norse by Southwest looking for payback, Atticus, with a little help from the Navajo trickster god Coyote, lets them think that they’ve chopped up his body in the Arizona desert.
But the mischievous Coyote is not above a little sleight of paw, and Atticus soon finds that he’s been duped into battling bloodthirsty desert shape-shifters called skinwalkers. Just when the Druid thinks he’s got a handle on all the duplicity, betrayal comes from an unlikely source. If Atticus survives this time, he vows he won’t be fooled again. Famous last words.

Review:
Atticus reluctantly helped the Vampire, Leif, kill Thor and other norse gods and beings in the battle (see Hammered). Now the Norse are out to get him and Atticus knows his days are numbered unless he can trick them into thinking he is dead. He enlists the aid of the god of Tricksters, Coyote. Of course any deal with Coyote comes with a tradeoff.

Coyote has announced that Atticus needs to help him re-establish a gold mine to help his Navaho tribe. Atticus soon learns the task is much more complicated than working with the local ground elemental. It appears that Atticus will have to kill some very vicious shape-shifters who steal human, as well as animal, skins.

Atticus has to fend off attacks from another goddess as well as try to disengage himself from Leif who claims he needs Atticus’ help to win back the vampire’s territory. Things are just never simple in Atticus’s world.

This is the fourth book of an engaging series. We learn a little more of Atticus’ history as we wonder about the relationship between him and his apprentis, Granuaile. I enjoyed the flashback on the death arrangements that had to be sufficient to convince local authorities, some who had targetted Atticus. There is plenty of action although the final attack in this one is a bit over the edge far-fetched. The telepathic dialogue and friendship between Atticus and his faithful Irish wolfhound, Oberon, made this installment even more fun for me. I recommend this series to those looking an unusal hero with lots of action and humor to entertain the reader.

Audio Notes: Luke Daniels continues to add to this series with his wonderful narration. He successfully manages different voices to fit the characters and his portrayal of Oberon is lol fun. If you enjoy action and fun audios, I recommend you try this series.

I picked this from my own Audible TBR library.

Mailbox Monday May 26, 2014

Welcome to Mailbox Monday.
Mailbox Monday is a gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week and explore great book blogs.  This Meme started with Marcia at A Girl and Her Books (fka The Printed Page) and after a tour of hosts has returned to its permanent home at Mailbox Monday.
Thanks to the ladies sharing hosting duties: Leslie of Under My Apple Tree, Serena of Savvy Verse & Wit and Vicki of I'd Rather Be at the Beach.
Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

I resisted selecting any new review books again this week as I still have a line up.
I purchased one box set, picked up two free audios form SYNC, and many free ebooks.

(I still have many author requests to consider and reply to.)

Are your mailbox and TBR piles blooming?
