Martha's Bookshelf***Friday Pick Giveaway November 22, 2013

[** If you are new to Friday Pick Giveaway - Welcome!  Scroll down a bit (below book group #19) for instructions on how to enter.]

Happy Friday Friends!! Harrumph - another week zipped by!  I have had a super busy week in the office. I've been going to bed a bit early since I've had to be up early and to court three mornings this week. I think I'm pushing work since I may have to take it a easier in December when I expect I will have to start radiation treatment. I find out next Friday.
Sorry - I didn't even get to update the Giveaways in the side bar. I am still behind in reviews and visiting too. I'm glad next week is a holiday week but we are having company in so I will be doing some cleaning this weekend. So *sigh* - not sure how I can change this schedule.

Is everyone else ready for a nice Thanksgiving break and turkey or other special dinner?

[UPDATED NOTE - US entrants I prefer, please, that you pick a book as that is the first purpose of this giveaway - to find new homes for books. The GCs are for the international entrants because postage has jumped up.]

Thank you to all who entered the November 15 Pick. There were THREE Automatic wins this week!  (Automatic winners are those who requested the book four times and I did not note other people asking for that book during those weeks). There were two titles blocked this week and both were won!

2/19/11 Book Group #18- Pairs!---(All gone).

I have finally updated the intro and Entry paragraphs here:

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in three years I have posted 33 groups of 16 (528) books to find new homes! (as of November 2012)

I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want! I am happy to say that so far about 590+ books have found new homes! YAY. I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed.

Note rules here regarding international entries.
Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $5.00 $7.00 and $6.00 $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

TO ENTER:
Leave a comment and tell me WHICH BOOK you would like to get from the Friday Pick lists.
CUT OFF TIME IS THURSDAY NIGHTS AT 10:00 PM CENTRAL so I do not have to stay up past midnight to do the winner post!
I will randomly pick two winners to announce Friday mornings with the next Pick post.
Automatic wins are those who requested the book four times and I did not note other people asking for that book during those weeks.
WINNERS PLEASE CHECK THE WIN POST ON FRIDAYS AND fill in the Winner's Acceptance Form or email me at mesreads@gmail.com. [I will confirm receipt of the addresses- well I realize I haven't always done this. But if you filled out the form and don't get the book within two weeks nudge me with an email please!] If I have the winners e-mail I will send a reminder in a week or so....

Thanks for helping these books find new homes!!

Repeating this helpful blog tip: You can right click on a link and you will be given the choice to open the link in a new window or tab so you do not navigate away from the screen you are on!! I use this all the time!

Book Description
Publication Date: March 5, 2013
This is book 2 in the New York Times and USA Today bestselling paranormal romance Accidentally Yours series.

"If you love her, set her free. If she comes back, she's yours. If she doesn't...Christ! Stubborn woman! Hunt her down, and bring her the hell back; she's still yours according to vampire law."

- Niccolo DiConti, General of the Vampire Queen's Army.

After a three-century "time out," legendary vampire Niccolo DiConti vows to fulfill an ancient prophecy and, along the way, defeat the demented queen of the damned. All he has to do is find his human mate, seduce her into agreeing to become a vampire, and bond her to him forever. Luckily, he's handsome, charming, and mind-blowing in bed. How hard could this be?

On vacation in sultry Mexico, biologist Helena Strauss makes the discovery of a lifetime when she meets Niccolo-and finds herself caught in a world of supernatural secrets and dangerous delights. Even more shocking is that he seems to know everything about her and claims her as his true immortal companion. Sure, she can't take her eyes-or mouth-off this gorgeous, perfect being. But can a hot-blooded gal like her really settle down with a cold-hearted vampire?

Review:
Helena is a young biologist who gets stranded in the Mexican jungle where she ends up discovering a god-like naked man in a cave. She is compelled to kiss him, awakening Niccolo.  He claims that she is his destined mate, they are bonded and he will protect her so they can be together forever. And he means forever, even though Helena doesn’t realize that right away.

Helena has been too busy for dating but she is thrilled with her attraction to the very hunkie Niccolo. She is even more interested after he saves her from attack outside of the cave.  Niccolo sends her home with promises to call, leaving her to wonder what is going on. When Niccolo shows up a few weeks later to rescue her again she is still wondering but can’t deny the overwhelming attraction. She allows him to sweep her off her feet and put her on a plane to New York with more promises of explanation, seduction and a wedding. Only he doesn’t show up and she has to wait under guard.

Niccolo is a thousand year old vampire who wants to escape the control of his wicked queen without dying. He made a pact with the goddess Cimil who claimed that only his future bonding to a pure human could win him freedom.  But he has to follow all the rules which include not explaining anything to the woman until he marries her. They must marry three months after they meet and only after the woman has voluntarily agreed to transform. He just can’t figure out how to control his lust for Helena without explaining anything to her so he has been staying away. But that makes it doubly difficult to woo her and convince her to stay.

Helena decides enough is enough and plots out an escape from the lonely apartment. She is followed by Andrus who claims he can help dissolve the bond between her and Niccolo. Along the way Helena discovers that Niccolo is a vampire and Andrus is something else although she isn’t quite sure if he is good or bad.

Andrus is a demigod whose job is to kill evil vampires. He doesn’t much care if he mistakes a few good ones, like Niccolo and his men, along the way. His goal is to kidnap Helena to lure Niccolo into bringing the twisted vampire queen to Andrus so he can kill her. There are many problems with this revenge idea but he is blind to all of it except seeking freedom.

The connection between Helena and Niccolo sizzles but can’t be explained or consummated because of ‘the rules.’ It is fun to see how Niccolo responds to modern phrases and technology after being asleep for 300 years. Andrus seems like another trapped soul who was designed to do good but has allowed his hatred to twist his actions. The crazy goddess Cimil has to step in a few times to run interference to protect her plan and the world. I appreciate the clever way that Ms. Pamfiloff has tied the characters and the details to work from beginning to end through the twisted plot. I enjoyed the first story Accidentally in Love With ...a God? and once again I enjoyed the humor that underlies the entire story. This is a lively, fun and fast read and can work fine as a stand alone.

I received this book from Hachette for review, Book Feature and Giveaway.

Excerpt from Accidentally Married to…A Vampire? by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff (11/19)
Helena’s tense body swooned when the force of his lips met hers. He pulled her greedily into his hard frame and moved his strong hands to grip her waist. It felt like he had claimed her as his personal prize. It felt euphoric. Owned by a sex god!
Wait! What the hell am I doing? She broke the kiss and pushed him away again. “This is insane. I don’t know who you are or how I got here, but you have to let me go. You have the wrong person.”
He smiled devilishly. “Afraid not, my dear Helena. Fate has united us.”
Helena raised her brow in question.
“However, you are correct, bella. This is insanity. And as much as I would like to show you the depths of my lunacy—and the things it is asking me to do to your succulent body at this very moment—we must go. Before they come for me.”
That sounded ominous. “Who are ‘they’?” Wait. Did she want to know?
“It is forbidden to speak of such things to a human, but I vow the day will come when there will be no secrets between us.” The naked warrior held out his hand. “Come, mio cuore.”
Helena shivered. Something about that explanation left her feeling substantially more terrified. Why couldn’t humans know? And what exactly was he? If the scientist in her had no answers, then better not stick around to find out.
Helena nodded. She took his hand—it was cool to the touch, yet heated her skin at the same time—and followed him through the chamber toward the doorway. As they reached the passage, Helena nonchalantly dipped down and grabbed a golden statue. It reminded her of an Oscar. In fact, she could swear there was an inscription on its base.
Sally Field? Too dark to know for certain.
She quickly jumped and struck Niccolo in the back of his head with all her strength. He stumbled to the side. She squeezed past him down the passage.
The moment she burst from the temple into the night, the stupidity of her plan hit home. How far could she get?
At least he was barefoot, bare everything—sigh—and she still had on her low-tops. That might give her the advantage. Question was, would she find her way back to civilization? She had to try.
Helena pushed frantically with her hands through rough branches and vines. They lashed at her face and scratched her arms and legs. She ran straight into a tree trunk.
She cupped her nose. Ow! That hurt!
     Thankfully, it wasn’t broken.
She slid around the enormous tree, panting and sweating. She continued on with her hands extended, wondering if running through the jungle, unable to see a goddamned thing, was actually more dangerous than trying her luck with that man. Were there any cliffs around here?
Helena tripped and landed on her knees, reopening the cut. “Son of a—” She cupped her hands over her mouth. She quickly picked herself up and slammed right into something hard again. Another tree? She probed hesitantly with her hands.
     Nope. Not a tree.
“Well, well…What have we here?” said a deep, unfamiliar voice.
     Helena screamed.
Two steel hands grasped her shoulders. “Hush, hush, now…” The voice was low and menacing.
She couldn’t see so much as an outline of a body or face. “Who the hell are you?”
“I go by Rodrigo. You may call me ‘Lucky.’ It’s been eons since I’ve dined on such a pure Forbidden, and your fresh blood smells…”—he paused and inhaled deeply—“divine.”
Yes. Running away had been a bad choice. Helena kicked and fought, but whatever held her was a thousand times stronger. She suddenly felt his hot tongue run down her neck.
     “Ummm. Delicious.”
He tasted her? Holy s*%#! “Let me go!” Helena shrieked. The man wrapped his unyielding arms around her waist and crushed her into his body.
“Release her, Rodrigo.” Niccolo’s deep voice sliced through the night like a welcome knife. “Or I will rip out your entrails and force you to swallow them. Repeatedly.”
Rodrigo froze, but did not loosen his painful grip on her body. Like a caveman trying to hold on to a drumstick, she thought.
“So, the anonymous tip was right.” Rodrigo’s voice was filled with arrogance. “You’re just the vampire we’ve been looking for.”
Vampire? Did he just say “vampire”? Helena’s frazzled body took what little energy it had left to resist fainting. She shook her head.
“And, let me compliment your fashionable attire, my friend. Is naked the new black?” said Rodrigo.
Apparently, the two men could see each other. That figures; all monsters can see in the dark.
“I am uncertain of what happened to the old black while I have been indisposed,” Niccolo replied flatly. “But I have no interest in indulging your urges to discuss my legendary body. I do, however, want you to let my woman go.”
     My woman?

Book Description
Publication Date: September 27, 2013
In a heart-racing thriller described as Falling Skies meets The Walking Dead,
Jennie struggles to find a safe place for what’s left of her family. But it seems as though there is no place sacred, no place secure. First the aliens attacked the sun, making it dimmer, weaker, and half what it used to be. Then they attacked the water supply, killing one-third of Earth’s population with a bitter contaminate. And when they unleash a new terror on humankind, the victims will wish for death, but will not find it…

When the world shatters to pieces around her, will Jennie find the strength she needs to keep going?

Review:
Jennie is a nineteen year old who was enjoying her first year at college and away from home. Now her parents want her to stay home since no one knows what is happening with the aliens who have attacked. They have already killed one-third of the Earth’s population by poisoning the water supply. Now the spaceships hover as the people wait for another attack.

The second attack comes in the form of dog sized, lion-like beasts who bite and infect anyone they come across - man, woman or child. Jennie’s mother is one of the early people bitten. Jennie takes her young brother to the hospital to be with their parents only to discover that, within an hour or so, the infected humans turn into zombies and attack more humans. Now the population is running from the aliens and infected friends and family.

Hugh is a 27 year-old high school science teacher who was called Mr. Hottie by Jennie’s school friends. He is getting over the loss of his rich girlfriend who was stolen by his younger, woman chasing and leach of a brother, Brad. Hugh spends the first few days of the zombie attacks barricaded in his apartment building trying to learn from news reports what is going on.

Brad is a self absorbed young man looking for the easy life by dating rich women. If he can spite his brother in the process so much the better. Brad and Hugh’s ex are in a coffee shop when the beasts run through town attacking a man right outside the door. Brad thinks he is being a hero when he drags the man inside the shop.

Jennie and her brother have to make it across town to seek refuge and help at their church. There they find Hugh and Brad waiting for the Pastor and his wife to take a busload of survivors to the military base. Hugh has a theory of a cure that he shares with the military scientists.

The Shisas, as the lion beasts are being called, manage to get on base to attack the group. Can Jennie and others have enough real faith to take the steps needed to survive?

I would see this closer to Left Behind than The Hunger Games and that is okay with its faith based focus.  It is an engaging story and I enjoyed how the author tells the tale through the three characters. It moves along well with a good combination of action and emotional input. I also liked the spiritual message told through this unusual, imaginative view. The ending sets up a sequel and I am interested to read on.

Sanctuary by Pauline Creeden

“Left Behind for the Hunger Games Generation”
sanctuaryIn a heart-racing thriller described as Falling Skies meets The Walking Dead, Jennie struggles to find a safe place for what’s left of her family. Praise for Sanctuary
“Pauline Creeden managed to mix more genres into one book than I could possibly imagine. The overall concept, aliens attacking the earth, is straight out of Science Fiction, but then you throw in a few zombies and post-apocalyptic fiction with how the dead/sick humans are acting. Overall, the entire story was charged with the adrenaline and thrills of a suspense/thriller novel, but the mood was terrifyingly eerie like a Horror story. There was almost too much sensory information for my primitive human brain to handle. Still, all of these genres combined made for one unique and fascinating story. This kind of book is of the same flavor as The Hunger Games with its originality, which I really appreciated.” - Katelyn Hensel for Readers' Favorite

“Sanctuary is a fast-paced Christian fantasy thriller that is original and quite entertaining. The story revolves around Jennie and her family, Pastor Billy and his wife, and two brothers who are polar opposites of each other. Each chapter is presented in the point of view of Jennie, Brad or Hugh (the brothers), which gives Pauline Creeden's Sanctuary, a multidimensional feel. The three different story-lines merge into a full-fledged fantasy/horror novel that never sags or lets up on the action. While there are Christian themes present in Sanctuary, and Jennie's faith is an important part of who she is, I, a non-Christian, did not feel I was being preached to or proselytized. I recommend Pauline Creeden's Sanctuary -- it's well-written and a lot of fun to read.” – Jack Magnus for Readers Favorite

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
Why on earth did I write a Christian novel that has both aliens and zombies in it?

When I was a teen/young adult and my faith was wavering at best, there were several movies out with the likely design to shake faith even more. End of the world movies were in their hay day. Alien invasion was another big one. And I couldn’t help but wonder. If something like this actually happened, would anyone be able to maintain their faith?

And now today, Zombies are on the rise.

Could aliens be reconciled with the Bible? Zombies? This is the purpose of Sanctuary.

Because of its poetic nature, the book of Revelation lends itself to a plethora of interpretation. I am not saying that my book is the only true possibility, but it could be one. Could not demons be misinterpreted as alien life forms? Might not Satan use this mirage to his advantage to explain the bitter water or the blotting out of the sun, moon, and stars? And then there’s Revelation 9:6 - "And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them."

Zombies?

If anyone reading this book at least opens themselves up to the fact that yes, a biblical interpretation could resolve the problems between faith and an apocalyptic reality, then Sanctuary has completed its purpose.

EXCERPT:
When Jennie reached the back door, she saw them. Four large dog-like creatures with pinched faces like bulldogs and lion-like manes. They snarled, and one of them leapt at the window on the top half of the door when it saw her. Jennie jumped back and fell hard on the cold tile floor. The bottle of painkiller bounced across the kitchen tiles. The creature slammed against the window a second time, cracking it. She blinked hard. Her heart sunk, and the hairs on her arms stood on end. A horrendous gargling howl rent the air, causing a shiver down her spine. She held her breath and waited for the creature to slam into the door again.

“What on earth?” she whispered to herself.

When the third attempt never came, she scrambled toward the door. Blinking hard, she used the door knob to help herself stand. Out the cracked window, her mother was still out of sight, but the last of the dogs headed across the field behind her backyard.

“MOM?” Jennie called out.

The rumbling faded, and the vibrations in her chest receded with the dogs. She pulled open the door and rushed onto their back deck. “Mom, where are you?”

When she reached the banister, she looked over the side. Her mom lay sprawled with one hand on the lattice. Blood gushed from Mom’s leg and her opposite arm. Jennie’s ears rang and flooded with every beat of her heart.

Jennie didn’t know how she got to the second floor of her house, but she found herself shaking her sleeping father. How had he slept through the rumbling? “Outside, it’s Mom…”

Her father leapt from the bed. Mickey, her little brother, lay asleep and undisturbed. Dad ran down the stairs and outside in his flannel pajama bottoms and white t-shirt. He scooped Mom up to his chest and carried her inside. Blood stained his shirt in crimson.

“Jennie, call 911!” Her father had said it at least three times before it finally registered in her brain.

She pulled the cell phone from her pocket, but it refused to connect. With a groan, she grabbed the cordless from the wall receiver, glad her heart stopped pounding in her head so she could hear.

“All operators are busy at this time,” a mechanical voice deadpanned, “Please stay on the line, and the next available operator will take your call.”

“They have me on hold, Dad. Should I hang up and try again?” She held the phone in both hands away from her face.

“No, just stay on the line.” Her father lifted the shredded jeans from Mom’s leg. “It looks like a shark bite. What on earth happened?”

Jennie took in the damage through tear-filled eyes. A huge chunk was taken from her mother’s calf, exposing the fibrous tendons that covered the bone in her leg. A bloodstain grew on the beige couch. Was she going to die? Panic rose up.

“What happened, Jennie?”

“I...I...They looked like lions, or dogs, or something. The rumbling shook the whole house…I tried to go outside to get Mom, but—” A sob blocked her throat.

Her father grabbed a throw pillow and held it against the leg. Mom’s exposed forearm laid across her chest in much the same condition as her calf.

“Grab me the duct tape.”

Jennie suddenly remembered the phone, put it back to her ear, and headed to the hall closet. She reached for the shelf above the jackets and grabbed the junk basket next to the toolbox.

“Please stay on the line. An operator will be with you shortly.”

She shoved the phone in the crook of her neck and fished through the box. Half the contents dropped around her feet. Who cares? When her fingers wrapped around the silver duct tape, a short-lived relief sent prickles down her arms. But the urgency gripped her chest in less than a heart beat, and she threw the junk basket on the ground with the rest of the items.

“Hurry, Jennie!” her father called from the living room. “And turn on the TV. Maybe they’ll have something about what’s going on.”

She handed her father the tape and turned toward the TV. The mechanical voice on the phone came through again, followed by more easy listening.

When she clicked on the TV, the shouting and wailing began before the picture warmed up on the screen. A sideways picture of New York City broke through, with the shaky voice of the newscaster voicing over.

“What we are watching now – I can’t believe it – is live footage of Times Square,” the newscaster’s voice paused for a deep breath. “We’ve lost our man on the scene and his camera man to what appears to be some kind of new alien creature. Just a short half-hour ago, the doors to the ship that hovered above Central Park opened and these dog-like creatures flooded out.”

Jennie couldn’t pull her eyes from the screen. She straightened and dropped the phone on the hardwood. The battery popped out and skidded across the floor.

Welcome to Mailbox Monday.
Mailbox Monday is a gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week and explore great book blogs.  This Meme started with Marcia at A Girl and Her Books (fka The Printed Page) but is now hosted at Mailbox Monday and through various blog hosts.
For NOVEMBER: the Mailbox Monday Tour host is Crystal @ I totally paused!
[Starting September, Bob of Beauty in Ruins will be the new back-up host for Mailbox Monday.]

Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.
