Book Description
Release date: May 28, 2013 | Series: Sweet on a Cowboy (Book 1)
A Love as Big as Texas . . .
Charla Rae Denny was the perfect wife with a perfect life, content to keep the home fires burning while her husband, JB, competed as a champion bull rider. Then their son died in a tragic accident-and everything fell apart. Divorced and saddled with a hill of bills and a failing ranch, Charla must now cowboy up to put her life back together.

James "JB" Denny doesn't stay where he isn't welcome. So when Charla shut him out of her grieving heart-and their home-a year ago, he took comfort where he could find it. Now after seeing beautiful Charla again, he wants it all back. She can't work the ranch alone, and deep in his heart he knows he can be the man she needs. But after so much history and heartbreak, can JB convince Charla to take a risk and give their love a second chance?

Review:
Charla Rae and JB had been together since they were starry-eyed 17 year-olds. Charla Rae was a ranch wife... she always took care of the home and had everything ready and waiting when JB came home. JB was a champion bull rider when they first married and later he managed the family business raising and training bulls for rodeo riding. JB was also a popular announcer for the “PBR” (Pro Bull Riding) rodeo circuit spending time away but always glad to come back to his family and home.

After years as a successful marriage team their world fell apart with the tragic death of their only child. Charla Rae went from shock to oblivion and Valium addiction. When JB couldn’t get through to her he fell for a young rodeo fan resulting in the couple’s separation and divorce.

Charla Rae has begun to get her life back although she still struggles each day not to seek the comfort of the pills. She knows she has to be more responsible, not only for herself, but because she must care for her father who is suffering from Alzheimer’s.  When JB has to let the ranch hand go, Charla Rae discovers that she has to, and can, manage some dirty and rough chores.

JB has worries about monies - he wants to help Charla Rae on the ranch and with her father’s care, but the money won’t stretch to cover two households.  The young woman he’d become infatuated with has moved on and JB realizes that he made a huge mistake leaving Charla Rae and her father who were the only family he had left.

JB wants to get back into Char’s life but how can he convince her to trust him again? Can she find a way to forgive him and forgive herself enough to brave her way back from oblivion to face an unexpected future without their boy?

I liked that this story dealt with a mature couple and very real-life issues. The author deals openly with the pain of grief, prescription pill addiction and the struggles of coping with an Alzheimer’s patient. The story is filled with underlying emotion, fears, difficulties of finding forgiveness and facing the future after tragic loss. The writing is very natural as well as strong, warm and sweet. If you enjoy truly rich and emotional characters you should try this book.

I do have to note that I had a negative reaction from the book is the cover which shows a man who does not look 40 to me. It also shows a pasture of horses rather than bulls or even cows. So, if that sort of thing annoys you, don’t look at the cover. I do recommend the trailer at the author's website. It has some nice cowboy shots and a lovely excerpt from the book!

I received this title from Forever, Hachette for an honest review.

Audio Book Review: The Empty Mirror by James Lincoln Collier

This is a strange, ghostly bit of entertainment.
The Empty Mirror
by James Lincoln Collier

Unabridged Audiobook
Author: James Lincoln Collier
Reader: Adam Verne
Running Time: 3 hrs 45min
Published by AudioGO, 2013
Genres: Young Adult, Historical Fiction, Ghost Story
My Rating: 3.75 of 5.0

Book Summary:
Nick Hodges had always been a troublesome boy. Growing up an orphan in his Uncle Jack's care in a small New England town wasn't easy. Everyone was a little wary, a little watchful--a little too watchful. One day, while Nick is walking in the woods, a neighbor thinks she sees him miles from where he actually is. Soon a series of events reinforcing Nick's hotheaded reputation unfold. The incidents become increasingly serious until, finally, Nick is the scapegoat for a much more sinister crime, one that he wouldn't even think of committing. As he uncovers history of the town's influenza epidemic, and as he observes a strange occurrence in the graveyard, Nick begins to suspect something out of the ordinary is happening. And when he sees a figure running in the woods wearing the mirror image of his own shirt, Nick starts to piece together some of the answers--answers no one could have imagined. James Lincoln Collier has written a haunting story of a boy and his reflection--and what happens when two souls want to inhabit the same living body.

Review:
I suppose you could best describe this as a ghost story and a mystery. It is set in a  type of back woods community in 1932. Nick, a young teen of 13, has already developed a reputation as a boy to cause trouble and mischief. One day a ‘nosy’ neighbor complains that he was rude to her. But he insists that he was miles away with his friend, Gypsy. Gypsy’s father is an abusive drunk. Her  family is considered trash and no one would believe them.

Nick is puzzled by the false accusations until he is looking in a pond and doesn’t see his own reflection. As Nick tries to hunt down the doppelganger himself the mischief leads him to a grave marker of a boy his own age who died with the influenza the year that Nick was born. The reflection continues to cause trouble focusing town hostility towards Nick. As the mischief escalates it appears that Nick may well end up in jail unless he can find a way to show the sheriff or town people he is innocent. Then the threats become even more deadly and Nick must leave or find a way to stop the body snatcher.

The story is interesting in its simplistic, beautiful settings and the mysterious, creepy danger. It is an unusual story and not my usual read but I did find it entertaining. I recommend this to fans ghost stories and to those who like unusual surprises with a touch of creepiness.

Audio Notes: Adam Verne does a nice job with the voices of Nick and Gypsy. The reading, and the writing, convey a small town, older time, tone. I do think there could have been a bit more suspense and excitement.  Still he managed to keep it entertaining and light which would make it better for YA listeners.

Book Review and Giveaway: Better Than Chocolate by Sheila Roberts

This story is better than chocolate - more entertaining and non fattening!

Better Than Chocolate (Life in Icicle Falls)

Book Description
Release date: September 25, 2012 | Series: Life in Icicle Falls
Sweet Dreams Chocolate Company has been in the Sterling family for generations, ever since Great-Grandma Rose literally dreamed up her first fabulous recipe. But now it looks as if they're about to lose Sweet Dreams to the bank—and that would be a disaster, not only for the family but for the town of Icicle Falls, Washington. Can Samantha, the oldest daughter and new head of the company, come up with a way to save it?
After Samantha does some brainstorming with her mother and sisters, inspiration strikes. They'll have a chocolate festival! Time's running out, but the Sterling women are determined and the town's behind them, so everything's bound to go smoothly….
Or not. Events seem to be conspiring against Samantha, and her mother's attempts to help aren't helping. To make matters worse, the fate of her company is in the hands of her archenemy, Blake Preston, the bank manager with the football-hero good looks. It's enough to drive her to chocolate. But Blake's also enough to convince her that (believe it or not) there's something even better than chocolate.

Review:
Samantha is the oldest daughter and the one who is responsible for her mother and two younger sisters. She is the one who has to try to pull the family chocolate company out of the management mess left by her friendly but inept stepfather.  But she needs cooperation and an extension of time on the bank loan.

Bank policies have had to be tightened so the old, community friendly bank manager has been replaced. Blake is a home-grown, high school football hero who has returned to town as the new manager. He wants to help her Samantha, especially when she comes up with an idea for a chocolate festival that will benefit many businesses in town. But Blake’s hands are tied by his boss who is pressing to foreclose Sweet Dreams Chocolate and sell the business to a less quality competitor.

Blake is immediately attracted to Samantha but she sees him as the cold-hearted enemy. She tries to ignore any chemistry that she feels with Blake.

This was a fun read. The story is very warm and there were times I laughed out loud. The characters are real with real life problems. The dialogue is natural and humorous. Samantha is a strong, determined business woman and it is lovely to watch her learn to accept help from others, even her family. The chapters start with lovely quotes attributed to Samantha’s mother as an author of several books.

There is a gentle underlying strength of faith and the romance has chemistry but is portrayed through strong desire and inference in a sweet, not steamy fashion. This is the first title I have read by Sheila Roberts and I look to enjoy more.
Examples of the humor:
A girl could bite off even the biggest challenge if it was coated in chocolate. P. 25.

The conversation turned in a new direction but Samantha was still stuck on the corner of Urge and Merge. What would it be like to meet Blake Preston on that corner?  P 298.
I received this book from Harlequin for my thoughts to be shared in survey.
