Publisher's Summary
In the aftermath of a war, America's landscape has been ravaged and two-thirds of the population left dead from influenza. Fifteen-year-old Stephen Quinn and his family were among the few that survived. But when Stephen's grandfather dies and his father falls into a coma, Stephen finds his way to Settler's Landing, a community that seems too good to be true. There he meets strong, defiant, mischievous Jenny. When they play a prank on the town bully's family that goes horribly wrong, they find themselves in the midst of a battle that will change Settler's Landing forever.

Review:
This story tells of terrible danger, loneliness, prejudice, fear and ends with a message of hope.
Fifteen year old Stephen and his family survived the war that devastated America. Somehow they also survived ‘the eleventh plague’ that killed two-thirds of the population. The life that Stephen knows has been harsh. He has learned to follow his strict and demanding grandfather’s rules or suffer for disobedience. His sweet, kind mother died in childbirth, and Stephen, his father and grandfather have lived as scavengers. They are constantly traveling to find what they can to trade and along the way they have to avoid towns where their might be illness and avoid being picked up by slavers. Stephen’s father might occasionally long to settle down but it would mean a risk from the routine that has been drilled into them.

Stephen’s grandfather dies and Stephen and his father struggle on. In a break of discipline, his father intervenes to help others break away from slavers.  As Stephen and his father then try to escape his father is injured and falls into a coma. Although fearful of strangers, Stephen has little choice but to accept their help. He follows them to a small community which is unlike anything Stephen has known.  The people share their burdens, their bounty and their skills.  The families live in homes and the young people even attend school.

It is hard for Stephen to adjust and fit in especially since the primary community leader’s son has taken a dislike to him and claims he is a spy for another community up the road.  The bully and his friends taunt and harass Stephen every chance they get hoping Stephen will be thrown out of the community. Stephen slowly warms to the family that has taken him in. The son befriends him as a brother and Stephen is intrigued by their adopted Asian daughter, Jenny. She too is looked upon with suspicion by many in the community so she holds herself as an outcast.

As Jenny and Stephen are drawn to one another they tend to get into trouble. This puts the family at risk and eventually triggers a confrontation with the neighboring community.  When the slavers show up to enter the fray the people have to decide how they are going to defend themselves. Even more importantly, how are they going to treat each other as they move into the future?

I enjoyed the plausible struggles and traumas portrayed in this story. The pacing is good and the characters’ diversity gives room for thought. Although the narrator did a good job of presenting different voices I felt at times that he lacked some extra ‘umph’ or spark that could have given greater life to the story.  All in all though I recommend this as solidly engaging and a good listen.

I received this as a free download as part of Audiofile Sync YA 2012  Summer Program. That is a great program that pairs a new audiobook with a classic of similar tone to encourage young people to read/listen to the classics as well as new authors.
I'm not quite sure where the community is located... mid south I think. I will add it to my New Author, Audio and Post-Apocalyptic Challenge lists.

Luciano's Luck by Jack Higgins - Audio Cassettes

3/25/11 I did get to set up a new group of books:
Group #19
Singles
Primary Colors - audio tapes
Note of Peril (black strip on cover)

2/19/11 Book Group #18- Pairs!---(All gone)
Not all of these are two from a series but several are. Each pick gets two books.

I have finally updated the intro and Entry paragraphs here:
If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick in November 27, 2009 and in two years I  posted 26 groups of 16 books to find new homes! (March 2012)

I have periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want! I am happy to say that so far about 399 books have found new homes! YAY. I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed.

Note rules here regarding international entries.
Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.
I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $5.00 and $6.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

TO ENTER:

Leave a comment and tell me WHICH BOOK you would like to get from the Friday Pick lists.
CUT OFF TIME IS THURSDAY NIGHTS AT 10:00 PM CENTRAL so I do not have to stay up past midnight to do the winner post!
I will randomly pick two winners to announce Friday mornings with the next Pick post.
Automatic wins are those who requested the book four times and I did not note other people asking for that book during those weeks.

WINNERS PLEASE CHECK THE WIN POST ON FRIDAYS AND fill in the Winner's Acceptance Form or email me at mesreads@gmail.com. [I will confirm receipt of the addresses- well I realize I haven't always done this. But if you filled out the form and don't get the book within two weeks nudge me with an email please!] If I have the winners e-mail I will send a reminder in a week or so....

Thanks for helping these books find new homes!!

Repeating this helpful blog tip: You can right click on a link and you will be given the choice to open the link in a new window or tab so you do not navigate away from the screen you are on!! I use this all the time!

Book Description
Publication Date: August 7, 2012

When deprived of her most prized sense, Daphne discovers a life she never expected, right under her nose.

Daphne Sweeten has left Paris - and a career she loves - in order to marry a man she loves even more. But when he stands her up on their wedding day, Daphne's left reeling. Trained as a professional "nose" or perfume creator, Daphne soon realizes that her sense of smell has somehow disappeared too.

In the days following she moves to Dayton, Ohio, to take on a job creating fragrances for household products. Without her sense of smell, she must rely on her chemistry skills, and hope her handsome new boss, Jesse Lightner, doesn't notice before she can figure out how to get it back.

Despite her desire to return to Paris, she can't deny the way Jesse makes her feel. But when Daphne approaches former contacts, she learns her missing ex-fiance has somehow snagged her old job.

As Daphne and Jesse work on a signature scent for their new line, she feels God at work in her life as never before. And the promise of what is possible is as fresh as the scent of rain.

Review:
Daphne is a ‘professional nose.’ She has always been able to distinguish scents and she had a prestigious job with one of the most important perfumers in Paris. But she was willing to give up her position to marry for love. To her dismay her fiancé doesn’t show up for the big society wedding.

Daphne doesn’t know why Mark didn’t show but she admits that she had some niggling at the rehearsal dinner that all was not right. Rather than beg her old boss for her job back, or stay in San Francisco to suffer the whispers of society, she decides to travel on to Dayton, Ohio where she and Mark had arranged jobs and a home waiting. Granted the job she is going to is for formulation at a household products company and they think she will rescue the company by her special ‘nose’ ability.  Now she faces a whole new problem... after leaving the wedding she lost her sense of smell. She hopes it is temporary - a cold or stress - and that she can start her job using her chemistry skills to create.

Daphne’s new boss, Jesse, isn’t thrilled to have his boss, Dave, force the budget expense of a ‘nose’ on him instead of using other ideas that Jesse has suggested to turn around his division. Jesse isn’t prepared for the impact Daphne has on him as a man who still grieves the loss of his wife.  Jesse’s main goal has been to spend more time raising his three year old son but he finds himself caught up in the struggles and stresses of succeeding at work.

I really loved Daphne’s positive attitude toward life even during her disappointments with a groom that doesn’t show, moving alone to a new town, discovering her new home is a horrible fix-er upper and then learning her ex-fiancé got her old job in Paris. And she is facing her new challenges with the loss of what she might have thought as her most valuable asset, her ‘nose.’ I enjoyed how Daphne was able to use emotional definitions in creating smells and ideas for products.  Jesse is a nice character too: dedicated to his son, struggling with balancing his business and personal needs and conflicted by the stresses of having a boss overwhelm his own suggestions and better judgment.

The story read very smoothly with an up beat tone even in the midst of the struggles and conflicts. In addition to the troubles, there are fun experiences in the story.  The romance is light and developed almost reluctantly. There is a bit of mystery and a surprising twist in the resolution of the story. The spiritual aspects are nicely portrayed in the characters’ actions and attitudes.  The source of the title is a nice connection too. I recommend this book as a light romance and upbeat story. I hope to read more stories by this author.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Daphne's positive outlook:
"It’s the same job. Less romance, as you pointed out. But as the Bible says, there’s a time for everything under the sun. A time for sensual pleasures and a time for washing the dishes. This is my time to wash the dishes and make that job a more pleasurable experience."  Location 475.
No one probably saw her situation as dire as she did. Resilience was required. Life was meant to be lived triumphantly, not passed in the dark corners of one’s worst moments.  Location 967.
Thank you to Ruthie at Thomas Nelson who provided this book through NetGalley.
This story is set in Dayton, Ohio for my Where Are You Reading Challenge.I will also add it to my ARC list.
Aislinn and Dylan face the Nirvanan traitor Shakan to rescue Aislinn’s sister and discover his link to Vark.
Faced with Shakan’s treachery, Aislinn and Dylan must capture him and rescue Nashira, Aislinn’s sister. Realizing that Shakan is both possessed by the spirit of a corrupt ancestor and is in league with Vark to betray Nirvana, they devise a plan to rescue Aislinn’s parents using alien technology obtained during Shakan’s capture.
Review:
This episode of the Samsara Chronicles reveals the extreme madness of Shakan.  He manages to kidnap the Princess Nashira and her human friend, Candy (now known as Vanora), while Aislinn and Dylan are returning to the city of Zamphirus. Before Aislinn and Dylan can meet with the convened counsel they have to detour for the rescue, facing Shakan, who is now possessed by his evil ancestor, Jhanvar.  Although the result is somewhat predictable the authors create a marvelously dark setting and battle between Aislinn and Shakan as he tries to grab and use the power of the skull.
Aislinn has discovered an ‘eye’ which she suspects Shakan used as an AL to communicate with the Klatrians. They only need to determine how to get Shakan to cooperate and explain how to use the tool.
Aislinn meets with the counsel to convince them that she must negotiate with the Klatrians for the release of her parents. Meanwhile in the caverns of Klatria, Rodorus reminisces about his lost mate and the cataclysmic collision of the comet that destroyed their planet. He slips in to talk with the royals, Bonerus and Samara, asking them to trust him. He tells them how Shakan used a ‘mindflux’ to orchestrate their kidnapping. Then he explains that he is with the resistance group  who want to bring their people out of the control of their leader, Vark, who is obsessed with getting control of the skull.
I really appreciated the dynamic descriptions in this book. There is the darkness of the battle with Shakan; the beauty of Rodorus’ memories of his mate and planet before the destruction; and the devastation by the comet.  These contributed to my enjoyment of this installment.
Can the royals trust the resistance to help them? How will the negotiations go between Aislinn and Vark? Tune in next week for the continued story in Kindred, Book 12 (reviewing on 8/22).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aislinn learns more strengths:
“And in a perverse way, Shakan himself has opened the door for us to finally recognize our strengths and weaknesses. So even from the darkness, some light always exists.” Location 213.
A sense of beauty even for the aliens:
...Rodorus could only shrink in disgust at his own gnomish appearance. Yet his people were beautiful once. Not perhaps in the eyes of other races.  Location 697-700.

Book Review: One Breath Away by Heather Gudenkauf

This is a thriller presented in an interesting fashion with varying views and a focus on emotional drama.

Book Description
Publication Date: June 26, 2012

In her most emotionally charged novel to date, New York Times bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf explores the unspoken events that shape a community, the ties between parents and their children and how the fragile normalcy of our everyday life is so easily shattered.

In the midst of a sudden spring snowstorm, an unknown man armed with a gun walks into an elementary school classroom. Outside the school, the town of Broken Branch watches and waits.

Officer Meg Barrett holds the responsibility for the town's children in her hands. Will Thwaite, reluctantly entrusted with the care of his two grandchildren by the daughter who left home years earlier, stands by helplessly and wonders if he has failed his child again. Trapped in her classroom, Evelyn Oliver watches for an opportunity to rescue the children in her care. And thirteen-year-old Augie Baker, already struggling with the aftermath of a terrible accident that has brought her to Broken Branch, will risk her own safety to protect her little brother.

As tension mounts with each passing minute, the hidden fears and grudges of the small town are revealed as the people of Broken Branch race to uncover the identity of the stranger who holds their children hostage.

Review:
This is certainly an engaging thriller although not quite what I expected. This suspenseful tale is presented from the rotating viewpoint of five characters: Augie, Holly, Will, Evelyn and Meg.

A strange man has walked into the Broken Branch elementary school with a gun and is holding a classroom  hostage. No one really knows where the danger exists and most are too frightened to make an escape especially since their teachers are enforcing the lock down rule of staying in their own rooms.

Augie is a 13 year old ‘tough’ girl who is anxious to protect her younger brother, P.J.  A terrible accident put their mother, Holly, in the hospital and the children have been transplanted to live with the maternal grandparents they have never met. What can Augie do to protect P.J. from the terror of the situation, especially when she discovers that it is his classroom that the kidnapper has taken hostage?

As Holly floats in and out of the pain medication she recalls why she was so eager to leave the hard life of the farm.  She wonders if her children will fare all right with her parents. Then she receives a muffled phone call from Augie that has her panicking.  What can she do to help her children when she is thousands of miles away in a hospital?

Will never understood why Holly left home without a word and made no contact for fifteen years. What did he do or fail to do? He wants to build a good relationship with his grandchildren, Augie and P.J.. But first, how can he help get them safely out of this school crisis?

Evelyn has always loved her third grade students just as her own children. Why must her last few weeks before retirement be spoiled by a gunman threatening her young charges?  She is prepared to die to protect them even as she imagines the kind and sensible things her husband would say to her.

Meg is a local police officer who has had to push her way to gain respect. Her own daughter would be in the third grade classroom except she is spending the day with her father, Meg’s ex-husband. Meg is trying to figure out the best way to keep everyone safe in this explosive situation while she struggles to figure out what man in town might do something so cruel.

Through the life antidotes for each character Ms. Gudenkauf  weaves the connected relationships and exposes human emotions and different thought processes. I did appreciate this interesting technique and acknowledge how the author portrays the difference it makes when one steps outside of a relationship and views circumstances from another’s perspective.  The writing is strong and clear.  I suppose I prefer fast action suspense novels but I think any reader who enjoys emotional drama would enjoy this presentation as it weaves the characters lives, past and present, until the madman is revealed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Will’s revelation:
In the scheme of the world, in this day, the life of one cow and her calves didn’t mater much, not in comparison to the live of his grandchildren and daughter in-law. Location 2601.
I saw this book on several other blogs and it caught my attention.  I appreciated receiving the opportunity to review it from Harlequin, Mira Division, through NetGalley.
This story is set in Broken Branch, Iowa for the Where Are You Reading Challenge. I will also add it to my New Author and Suspense challenges.
