Sunday Words of Encouragement June 26, 2011

I am expecting to go to a church mini-group after service today so I have prepared this post ahead of time from notes of our Pastor’s sermon a few years ago. (Yes, I keep journals of the sermons so occasionally I can review them for inspiration and calming peace.)
A favorite encouraging Bible passage is  Jeremiah 29:11
New International Version (NIV)
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
God has a Master Plan for each life. He always knows what you are going through even when your life feels like a messed up puzzle.
1.     God may only give you one piece of the puzzle at a time.
2.     God sees the completed, whole picture when you cannot.
3.     God is assembling things according to His plan.
Sometimes pieces don’t seem to fit, sometimes pieces look alike, but remember, the completed puzzle is a work of art even when the back side is a lot of criss-crossed strings!

This is a favorite song acknowledging that we have a Hope and a Future.

A Verse for Today
Psalm 32:8
New International Version (NIV)
 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

I will pray this Sunday for peace of mind for any who may be struggling; I will pray that you will see a Hope.

Sharing Beyond Books #2

Sharing Beyond Books or SBB won the votes last week by 18 to 4 so that remains the name for this 'event.'
Amy asked if this was a Meme.   If several people want to do it as a meme I will set up a linky.  For now, if you do a post with the questions add your link and I, and hopefully others, will come to visit!

It was an interesting split on reading multiple books at one time.  At least eight of you only read one book at a time and another seven read only one or two.  Seven of us read in the three to six range.  Then you have the incredible readers, Ricki and Jennifer who read 12 at a time! Whew!  I have to agree with Maria D. that I have to be careful not to read the same genre as that does get confusing. Last week I had two demon books and I had to finish one before I started the other.

I enjoyed reading about your favorite vacation sites and now I know who to contact if I get to go to some of these historic places I would love to visit like Williamsburg (Maria D.'s choice).  Lieder and Amy mentioned Washington which I'd like to visit someday too.  Birgit's park with an ice cream parlor sounds perfect for a summer visit! Carol L do you love Erin Hilderbrand books set in Nantucket vicinity? Brednabh is close enough that she and I will have to plan a Destin book day! Whoo Hoo!

The Winner from last week's comments is: #12 LOUISA.  There are still 11 'love' books to pick from and 9 Christmas choices. So Louisa - please choose a book from the remaining Love Books List for Giveaway or remaining Christmas Giveaway Books and let me know your choice, your address and a choice of bookmarks by completing the WINNER FORM.

WEEK #2 Questions
Q1.  Do you have an eReader or read eBooks?
You all probably know by now that I do have a Kindle and I love it! I even like to listen to the text to speech. (I wish my nails were as nice as this ladies. *g*)  I also love getting all those free Kindle downloads although I have only read a handful.
I have to admit that I do not enjoy reading on the computer. It seems to take me twice as long to read my books for editing - of course that could be because I have to be picky and precise about copy edits.

Q2. Share your favorite summer sport.
It should come as no surprise that my favorite summer sport is swimming!  I am up to 30 laps at least three times a week now and it feels so good to get that exercise. I rotate strokes but I don't do butterfly, which I never was very good at. In high school I used to race distances, relays and backstroke. I am also a fabulous floater and after the laps I just float as still as I can be for about five minutes......ahhhhhh!

Q3. Tell us the capital city of your state (or country if you don't have a state capital) and have you ever visited there?

I visited Tallahassee, our state capital just last week.  I had to cover a court hearing there for another law firm. It was my first time there and I was directed to parking that ended up three blocks away. Does anyone want to see the pictures of the blisters I got? Ugh!

DON'T FORGET any of you might have good questions you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this  Suggested Question Form(Birgit I know you have some because I saw a few good questions at your blog and have noted them for use if you don't suggest them. LOL) At the beginning of each month I will draw from the suggestions I used the month before and that person will get a book choice or GC.

Your turn to share:
1.  Do you have an eReader and/or do you read eBooks?
2.  What is your favorite summer sport?
3.  What is your capital city and have you visited there?

SBB Comment Winners can choose a selection from the remaining  Valentine and "Love" books or the remaining Christmas Giveaway Books - there are still about 19 books available to choose from. I'll start pulling some other books to add soon.
Rules: a) Must be a follower; b) Share a comment on any (or all) of the three questions above.
Open internationally and an international winner may get a smaller book or a $5.00 GC if I decide the mailing is too much.
I will pick a Comment winner from all comments made by Friday, July 1 at 10PM central.

2.  Audiobook Week Love Giveaway
BTW- I agree with MariaS - I am fine listening to books with the text to speech mechanical voice of the Kindle! It is not too much different to reading in my head and I can do mindless chores (like applying makeup or folding laundry) while I listen.
(I'll update this post to show the selections once made.)

Product Description
Judith Whitman always believed in the kind of love that "picks you up in Akron and sets you down in Rio." Long ago, she once experienced that love. Willy Blunt was a carpenter with a dry wit and a steadfast sense of honor. Marrying him seemed like a natural thing to promise. But Willy Blunt was not a person you could pick up in Nebraska and transport to Stanford. When Judith left home, she didn't look back.

Twenty years later, Judith's marriage is hazy with secrets. In her hand is what may be the phone number for the man who believed she meant it when she said she loved him. If she called, what would he say?

TO BE SUNG UNDERWATER is the epic love story of a woman trying to remember, and the man who could not even begin to forget.
Review: This is a unique and remarkable read!

Judith Whitman at age 44 is dissatisfied with her stressful job as a film editor, her rather staid (and maybe unfaithful) husband, Malcolm, and her distant teenage daughter, Milla (short for Camille).  Milla and Malcolm have agreed to replace Milla’s bedroom furniture which is an old maple set that Judith inherited from her father. That discarded bed-set leads the story back to Judith as a teenager.

Judith is 15 when she travels from Vermont to visit with her estranged father in a small town in northwest Nebraska. Judith is ensconced in a room with her grandmother’s special maple bed-set. Judith briefly meets the rough young man, Willy, who quickly declares her as “dangerous.”

Judith returns to live with her father when she is 17 and spends the summer falling in love with Willy Blunt. Willy is a simple man: a carpenter who was raised by a farmer but refused to accept that occupation. Country-bred Willy, at age 24, has a simple life philosophy of “living and enjoying” life and he has a remarkable vocabulary for an unsophisticated man.

The summer of first love for Judy is fresh and exciting, thanks to Willy’s simple charms. There are moments of surprising danger but for the most part it is sweet and intense, as one might expect a teenage summer romance.  At the last bit of summer Judy suddenly receives acceptance to Stanford University and she heads off to college and a new life path.  Although she loves Willy and says they will stay in touch and will return to him, not so surprisingly, she grows beyond his simple ways and never really looks back ...until now.

Part One rocks back and forth from the present unsettled Judith to her unsettled teenage angst leading up to her bright summer of first love. Part Two evokes the tenderness and joy of first love as the author tells the summer romance. Part Three then brings us to the present as Judith in her “termite-eaten life” contacts Willy and goes to Nebraska for a poignant visit with him.

This story pulled me into emotions from the prologue and first page. There was a small portion in the middle that was slower reading but for much of the story I found myself sailing right through the chapter breaks not even recognizing I had reached one. There were also parts where I realized I was holding my breath against the pain that I knew one or the other characters was experiencing. Have you ever wondered what might have been with your first love? This is a story that takes a brief looks at "what ifs" for Judith.

This is not my normal book read but I am so glad I selected it. It may not be a HEA ending but the writing is beautiful and if you like evocative, rich literature, DO NOT MISS this story!

Three word description: lush, unexpected, breathtaking!

There are many quotes I would love to share yet do not want to give a few which might be close to spoilers.
Here are just a couple quick ones:
  • 17 year old Judith says upon seeing an impoverished mother and teenage sons: "What if,  in the end, we are all just flightless birds?" P 119.
  • Judith’s father while telling her how he was raised without a father: "...a man wasn’t much of a father if all he was willing to give to the enterprise was a small donation of personal lust." P135.

MBS Blogoversary SPOTLIGHT #7: Author JL McDougall

SPOTLIGHT: AUTHOR JL MCDOUGALL
I know Jaime from participating in Pump Up Your Books Blog Tour. She has offered another generous gift prize for my followers through my Blogoversary!

Jaime is working on books that help authors promote plus some other warm hearted things!
So You Want to Write a Guest Post: An Author's Guide to Promoting with Guest Blogging

Here are Jaime's Q&As!

Question #1:  Why do you write/what do you hope your readers get from your books?

A:  I have been telling stories since before I learned how to write them. My childhood was never a dull one with the most ordinary things becoming fantastic adventures. I write because it is within me to write.

At the moment, I have only written short non-fiction for Chicken Soup for the Soul books and a non-fiction guide for authors who want to promote via guest posting, so I hope readers find it useful! However, I do have a paranormal romance novel I am planning on publishing by August.

When it comes to my fiction, I simply want readers to feel. I think that is the goal of any good writing. Readers might feel in love with the leading character, feel swept up in a fantasy world or want to scream at a character to 'get out of the house! There is a murderer in there!' No matter what it is, if the reader has felt something, I have done my work an author well.

Question #2: Why write the 'So You Want' books? What's next?

I originally wrote the 'So You Want to Write a Guest Post: An Author's Guide to Promoting with Guest Blogging' after seeing two guest posts come through. One was about three sentences long. The other? About three thousand words long. It was clear to me that these authors had no clue about readability, the ideal length for guest posts or even how to follow clear directions.

Now these are two extreme cases, but paired with a lot of questions I have recieved over the years about guest posts, inspiration for an ebook struck. I created a guide that doesn't assume you know a certain level about guest blogging; it takes you through all the basics including formatting a guest posts, ideal length, topics to write about and even where to find blogs that accept guests posts.

I do plan to turn this into a series for not only authors but book bloggers as well. I have the bones for a few guides worked out, including on focusing on online book tours and another focusing on making your book blog the best it can be. But immediately next on my list is my paranormal romance novel that I'm just finishing the final edits on. (So I'll be back soon!)
