When brilliant, beautiful graduate student Charlie Banks came to Wyoming for a conference on horse communication, the last thing she expected to get was a lesson in love from sexy horse trainer Nate Shawcross. While Nate’s always had a way with horses, it’s the women in his life who have left him with romantic scars. But when Nate enlists Charlie to help him rehabilitate an abused stallion, she can’t help but be wooed by his soft touch and gentle voice. And though he’s been burned in the past, Nate is finding it harder and harder to hide his heart from the sexy greenhorn.

Review:
This story made me think of the Rolling Stone song lines: “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you just mind find, you get what you need.”

Charlie Banks is a psychology graduate student whose boss has arranged for her to go to a dude ranch to learn how cowboys communicate with horses. The ironies and twists start early in the story as we learn that Charlie is a PETA supporter who thinks riding horses is cruel. Then she discovers that Nate doesn’t know anything about his working ranch being a “dude” ranch with horse clinics. There isn’t any plan, there isn’t any food and the place is a shambles not even set up for anyone else to sleep one night, much less stay for a week or more.

Nate is already struggling to keep his ranch, especially since his ex-girlfriend, Sandi, wiped out his accounts and took off.  Then he learns that Sandi decided she’d make some quick money from deposits for horse clinics and leave him with the consequences when people started showing up.

Charlie begins to play housekeeper as the other “clients” show up. First there is an older woman, Doris, who is experienced on a ranch but came for the clinics on horse training. Then there is a teenage goth, Phaedra, who is about as sullen and rebellious as they come. Finally Phaedra’s father shows up for bonding time and he is quite a surprise as a movie star cowboy who hasn’t seen Phaedra since she was a little girl.  Everyone pitches in, even allowing Charlie to make vegan dishes (on a ranch?) for herself and Phaedra. Each character adds a dynamic about family relations that adds to Charlie’s confusion and challenges some conceptions her mother has drilled into her, especially about men leaving their children behind.

Charlie is annoyed and frustrated as it appears Nate is hiding secrets in an upstairs room that has Charlie thinking of dead girlfriends hidden away. But Charlie is truly shocked when she finds out that Sandi took something more important than Nate’s money. She discovers the secret when Sandi shows up back at the ranch with Nate’s six year old, precocious daughter, Sam. Sandi is a piece of work and she will use anything she can, including Sam, to threaten or manipulate Nate into giving her half of his ranch.

There are lots of fun quirks and dialog in this story, like a horse named “Honey” who causes Charlie to think Nate is being fresh with her when they first meet. The biggest ironies are a city girl set on saving the world with “important work” who sure doesn’t want to get distracted by a cowboy, no matter how hunky; and a cowboy with a plan for his ranch and no time to be distracted by a city girl, no matter how sexy and helpful. Charlie and Nate are flawed with past hurts and preconceptions to overcome. But this story shows that life often has a way of changing dreams and plans and melding them into something that works for everyone.

This is a fun, curl up in a comfy place and enjoy read.

Kindle:  Tangled in Time by Pauline Baird Jones.  I read this Sci Fi/Steampunk Romance Novella ARC for the author and I couldn't put it down. It was wonderful with great gentle humor! Watch for reviews of all three of the space books, author interview and giveaway coming up soon.
Colonel Carey (from The Key and Girl Gone Nova) takes a test "flight" through the Garradian time-space portal, but an unexpected impact lands him somewhere and some when. As he attempts to get to Area 51, he crosses paths with Miss Olivia Carstairs, who could be Mary Poppins' twin sister. Or maybe her cousin. Olivia's got a transmogrification machine powered by steam and something more, and a mouth he'd like to kiss like it was his job. Can he get them both to safety before the buzzard eats them or she shoots him with her derringer?
Audible:   Inside Out (Harlequin Teen) by Maria V. Snyder. This was interesting from start to finish and had some good twists.  I will be working on this review too.
    Product Description
Inside Out"Imagine every space in this room filled with people. Constantly being jostled and pushed. In the lower levels there is no quiet place. No peace. To a scrub, this room is paradise."
I drew a deep breath. I'd spoken more in one burst to this stranger whose room I'd invaded than anyone else in weeks. And with a single word he could alert the Pop Cops and send me to the Chomper. We stared at each other for a few heartbeats.
Before I could retreat he said, "My name's Riley Narelle Ashon. Any time you need peace, you're welcome to use my hideaway."
I'm Trella. I'm a scrub. A nobody. One of thousands who work the lower levels, keeping Inside clean for the Uppers. I've got one friend, do my job and try to avoid the Pop Cops. So what if I occasionally use the pipes to sneak around the Upper levels? The only neck at risk is my own...until I accidentally start a rebellion and become the go-to girl to lead a revolution.
Line Edits:  YAY the eTreasures new website it working!! Two new releases are posted with more to come soon.

PB: Renters Win, Home Owners Lose: Revealing the Biggest Scam in America by Tom Graneau. I am about half way and have found the history and statistical data interesting so far. Author Guest Blog to be posted on September 22 and my Review on September 23 for Pump up Your Book Promotion.
    Product Description:
Renters Win, Home Owners Lose: Revealing the Biggest Scam in AmericaHome ownership has been widely regarded as the "best financial investment" in the pursuit of wealth accumulation. Americans believe that the appreciated value of a home provides a great hedge against inflation, giving home owners an opportunity to make a profit when they sell the property. Today, two-thirds of American families own their homes. Nearly 80 percent of the 78 million baby boomers are homeowners. Many of them have bought and sold several homes. Yet, close to 90 percent of American families are broke. Nothing consumes more of our hard-earned money than "home ownership." What if this popular, "best investment" choice is nothing more than a dangerous Dream? Is home ownership simply a huge economic scam designed to KEEP buyers broke? Could homeowners be working to pay a mortgage that make their lenders rich while they stay poor? What if "home equity" is only an illusion? Could renters be in a BETTER financial position than those who own their home? RENTERS WIN, HOME OWNERS LOSE: REVEALING THE BIGGEST SCAM IN AMERICA is a bold approach in unraveling the long-term financial reality of home ownership in America. The book compares buying a home vs. renting and reveals that renters clearly have tangible, financial advantages over the majority of home owners. RENTERS CAN TRULY BE WINNERS! Tables and models are used throughout the book to poignantly demonstrate that most homeowners receive no more than a zero percent return on their investment, and many lose money in the deal. Renters Win, Home Owners Lose: Revealing the Biggest Scam in America will get you to rethink the way you view home ownership vs. renting. The book is a thought-provoking masterpiece.

Audio:  The Postcard Killers by James Patterson and Lisa Marklund James. I was very happy to get this in the mail last week too. I was able to jump right into in on a two hour drive to and from an all day seminar on Friday. I am half way done and this is very gripping.  Good Patterson. Hachette Giveaway to be posted with the review when I finish this by the end of this week.
    Product Description
The Postcard KillersNYPD detective Jack Kanon is on a tour of Europe's most gorgeous cities. But the sights aren't what draw him--he sees each museum, each cathedral, and each restaurant through a killer's eyes.

Kanon's daughter, Kimmy, and her boyfriend were murdered while on vacation in Rome. Since then, young couples in Paris, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, and Stockholm have become victims of the same sadistic killers. Now Kanon teams up with the Swedish reporter, Dessie Larsson. Every killing is preceded by a postcard to the local newspaper--and Kanon and Larsson think they know where the next victims will be. Sunday Words of Encouragement September 19, 2010

This morning we celebrated communion and sang some powerful praise and worship songs. Our pastor's message was titled "Friends or Just Friendly?". He pointed out that our lifestyles have changed from the days when a small community might sit out on their front porches, wave as you go by and stop to visit, share food and fellowship/friendship. (One friend in front of us sent us a note that said: nowadays the porches are built on the backs of the houses to discourage people from dropping by.) Pastor pointed out that because we (as Christians or followers of Christ) are loved much, we can love much.  The overall point was summarized in   this Verse for today:  John 13: 35 (NIV):
By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

Our choir song this morning was "Cry Holy". It is very awesome and
we have a great soloist who made it that much more powerful.
I couldn't find a video with words so they are printed below
this choral presentation which is quite wonderful.

    CRY HOLY by Salvador
    We come this far,
    by light of day,
    through deserts of loneliness,
    to the sacred place,
    well you know my life,
    and all I've been through,
    the sin in my heart,
    has kept me from you,
    but Father your grace,
    is greater then sin,
    your mercy rains down,
    and heals me again.

All I can do is fall down on my knees and cry, holy, holy, holy.
All I can do is fall down on my knees and cry, and cry holy, holy, holy
    You are holy

    When I'm on my face,
    in my darkest night,
    I cry for a way,
    to your shining light,
    and Father your grace,
    is greater then sin,
    shines down on me,
    it heals me again.

All I can do is fall down on my knees and cry holy, holy, holy.
All I can do is fall down on my knees and cry holy, holy, holy.
    You are holy.
    You are holy.
oohh you are holy, holy, holy

    And Father your grace,
    is greater then sin,
    it shines down on me,
    and heals me again.

All I can do is fall down on my knees and cry, holy, holy, holy.
All I can do is fall down on my knees and cry, and cry holy, holy, holy.
    You are holy, holy
    You are holy, holy, holy
All I can do is fall down on my knees and cry,
cry holy, all I can do, is cry out for you, all I can do is cry, holy.

I recognize the dilemma of being friendly v. being a friend. As I blog hop and visit many sites it is really an act of being friendly. But I especially cherish those friends I have made in the blogging community who I know I can trust to be honest with me and I know that they will be there if I need help or comfort and I am here for them if they need help or comfort at their end.  I prayed today that God would grow and strengthen those friendships that he wants to build around me and my work, locally and in the Internet world.
