Book Description
Release date: April 30, 2013 | Series: Barefoot Bay (Book 3)
A Barefoot Bay Novel
When running is all you've ever known . . .
Caught between fight and flight, Zoe Tamarin has always picked flight. Since she was rescued from a nightmare childhood by her great-aunt Pasha, they've been on the move, never staying in one place long enough to risk exposing their precarious past. But now that they've reached the sun-baked shores of Barefoot Bay, Zoe may have to stay and fight-for her aunt's life . . . and for a love she ran from years before.
Sometimes the bravest act of all is to stand still.
Oliver Bradbury came to Florida to start over, as both a doctor and a father to his eight-year-old son. He never expected life to hand him a second chance with the woman he lost years ago-but one look at Zoe Tamarin and he knows he'll do whatever it takes to prove that this time, he can be the man she needs. But when demands of family and friendship threaten to shatter their rekindled passion, Oliver must heal Zoe's lifelong wounds with more than hot kisses . . . but will that be enough to keep her from flying off with his heart?

Review:
Zoe is a vibrant young woman who lives with her beloved “great-aunt” Pasha. Zoe was orphaned and facing danger in her early teens when Pasha rescued her. But Pasha and Zoe have lived ‘on the run’ ever since. Any time anyone starts asking questions or gets too close, Pasha moves them on to the next town. That was fine until Zoe fell in love. She decided to tell the truth to Oliver, whom she was head over heels in love with. She conned him into a balloon ride and took the risk of disclosing her past. But the reaction wasn’t good – Oliver wanted her to go to the authorities and straighten things out. When Zoe told Pasha, Pasha panicked and they ran again.

Nine years later Oliver discovers Zoe and Pasha living in Barefoot Bay. The immediate attraction and reaction makes it clear that the extreme feelings between Zoe and Oliver haven’t changed. Circumstances are much different though. Oliver has an 8 year old son with the woman he supposedly left when he first met Zoe. Zoe is relieved to discover that Oliver is divorced and she and Pasha are charmed by the super intelligent Evan.

Pasha is ill with cancer and Oliver is a partner in a clinic that specializes in experimental treatments. Zoe will do anything to get him to accept Pasha as a patient with no insurance and no questions asked. Zoe is willing to risk the pain of heartache for a fling but Oliver isn’t. He doesn’t want his son to be hurt when Zoe leaves and he wants her for life, not just for a fling. What will it take to convince Pasha and Zoe to stop running and take the greatest risks by staying?

Zoe might be a bit flippant and flighty for my tastes but she doesn’t sleep around and maybe that is why she wants to jump Oliver every time she sees him.  The romance is full of conflict and combustible chemistry. Ms. St. Claire is a masterful story teller and the strong, clear writing tone pulled me into the story.  The hints of danger and mystery enhance what might otherwise be just another romance. The college girlfriends who surround Zoe in Barefoot Bay are an interesting group and apparently have their own romance stories with a little intrigue in each. This book, and no doubt the rest of the series, would be great summer reads for anyone who likes strong romance.

Zoe’s gardener friend, Tessa, shares words of wisdom:
Roots don’t strangle if the plant is well tended, my friend. Roots nourish. They provide stability. They make sure the plant doesn’t merely survive, but thrives and grows and produces a fruit or vegetable. Page 171.

 Product Description
Private investigator Vivi Angelino loves living life on the edge, but stepping into the shoes of a movie starlet to bait a serial killer isn't just a thrill . . . it's a ticket to the big time for her fledgling security firm. That is, as long as a certain risk-averse FBI agent stays out of her way-and out of her fantasies.

Assistant Special Agent in Charge Colton Lang isn't above using his well-worn rulebook to stop Vivi's latest walk on the wild side. But when they learn her client is involved in something far more insidious than bad acting, Vivi and Colt must work together despite the electrifying attraction arcing between them. For each new clue is bringing them closer to a high-profile crime with a dark and deadly truth at its core . . . and a cold, calculating murderer with nothing left to lose.
Review: This book SIZZLES!
Vivi is such a sassy character. Even though she is over 30 her normal look is baggy cargo pants, tight T shirt, cropped/spiked hair and nose ring  - all flying down the path on a skateboard. Some of this may be a cover up to her feminine charms but it is the tough, edgy person she has made herself into. No one knows, not even her family, the painful event that triggered her toughness. Vivi is the driving energy that founded the newly formed PI firm of the Guardian Angelinos, which includes her brother Zack and assistance from her Rossi cousins.

ASAC Colton Lang is a “by the book” FBI agent who has been directing business to the PI firm. Mostly he contracts them because they are doing a good job getting things done but maybe a bit because he is fascinated by the vivacious Vivi. They are pretty much opposites considering he is the epitome of traditional business whose idea of casual is pressed polo shirts, pressed khakis and clean docker shoes.

The sparks fly between these two as they tease each other's quirks. Colton scoffs at the idea that tough looking Vivi thinks she can pose as a Hollywood starlit. Her agreement with the movie star includes a heavy nondisclosure penalty which wouldn’t be a problem if Colton wasn’t assigned as the agent to be her bodyguard. When Colton isn't quite positive if his charge is Cara or Vivi, just how far will Vivi go to distract him from declaring her identity???

The book starts early with a sexy tease as Vivi tries to distract Colton. There are further hots scenes as the story and tension progresses.  The pair start out with one assignment but soon are uncovering deeper and more sinister criminal events. The mystery continues from start to finish in this book as just when you think that the suspense is winding down a new threat is thrown into the mix.

The wonderful thing with this author is she manages to weave a great balance of plausible mystery and suspense, real  and fun character interaction, fast paced action and sizzling sexual scenes. I also like how each of the protagonist in the series have been unique in tone giving each book its own feeling: Shiver of Fear had a sense of warmth emanating from Marc and Face of Danger has a sense of energy from Vivi . Although I have enjoyed each book in this series, I think this was my favorite so far. I look forward to the stories for the other Angelino/Rossi family members!

Q&A Interview with Roxanne St. Claire

Please help me welcome Roxanne St. Claire to Reviews at Martha's Bookshelf.
Q1. I love series and I like to ask this question:  When you do a series do you have each book plotted out before you start the first one or do the subsequent books flow from the first book?

Roxanne:  It really depends on what the publisher is expecting.  When I proposed my first series, I only plotted one book, but laid out how the series might unfold.  That ended up being eight books and two novellas.  With the Guardian Angelinos, I plotted the first book and identified future heroes and heroines, as well as their possible storylines.

Shiver of Fear (The Guardian Angelinos)I write stand alone books in a series.  They are sometimes very loosely connected stories, but the story never requires someone to read another book in the series.  For me, as a reader, that is critical; I don’t want to feel like I’ve missed something.  The characters will reoccur and might even have an arc from one book to the next, but job number one is to make each individual book awesome on its own, then make sure the “world” of the series is behind it.

Q2. What most inspires your plots?

Roxanne:  I ask myself three questions:
1.  First, about the characters I have in mind:  How can I make this person’s life hellacious?
2.  And about the series: What kind of story would my readers love to read in this series?
3.  And then about the problem the characters have to face: What if THIS happened to THAT person?
Usually, after I answer those three questions, the threads of a plot start to tickle my brain and I begin to weave them into a story.

Q3. Is there an ancillary character you had the most fun with while writing the Guardian Angelinos series?

Roxanne:  Uncle Nino!  This 80-something (he won’t tell) year old Italian (grandfather to the Rossi family, great uncle to the Angelino cousins) is the glue that holds the entire series together!  He loves to cook, solve puzzles, dole out wisdom, and get involved in the lives of the Rossis and Angelinos.  He is employee #3 of the Guardian Angelinos (twins Zach and Vivi Angelino are #1 and #2) and he’s in every book in the series so far.  Readers love  him, and his recipes, many of which are on my web site.

Q4. Have you had to do any unique research or what was one of the most surprising things you learned in researching for any of your books?

Roxanne:  I had to research bioterrorism for the plot in SHIVER OF FEAR, and that was kind of frightening and eye-opening.  The poison used as a tool of terrorism in SHIVER OF FEAR is purified botulinium toxins.  That would be…botox.  Obviously, there are huge benefits to this substance.  (Ask any movie star!)  But, in the wrong hands (as it was in my book), botulinium can be turned into a gaseous form and released into the air, causing paralysis and death to anyone who breathes it…and they won’t know for a few days.  Terrifying.
Face of Danger (Guardian Angelinos)
Q5.  If you could have a theme song for the Guardian Angelinos, what would it be? And/or do you have a dream cast for your books?

Roxanne:  I never answer the dream cast question!  If someone wants to make my books into a movie, I’ll be thrilled with whoever they cast.  A theme song is a very interesting thought, though.  It would have to be emotional, yet hard driving, with an irresistible beat and an unforgettable melody.  I’ll have to work on that one!

When her search uncovers secrets, lies, and threats, Devyn and Marc must trust each other when every instinct says they can't . . . and a terrorist wants to make sure they won't live to try.
Review: This is a fun romantic suspense series, although these can be read alone.
Marc Rossi is a sexy, kind and sharp former FBI agent. He is a cousin to the Angelinos and works on occasion with the newly formed PI firm of the Guardian Angelinos. They engage his services to convince Devyn Sterling to leave Belfast, Ireland.

In the first book of the series it was discovered that socialite Devyn Sterling’s father was a long time fugitive.  Now Devyn is on a search for her birth mother who is a biochemist who has suddenly taken a trip to Belfast. Devyn may be a beautiful socialite but she is exceedingly stubborn. She gets several messages delivered in strange ways telling her to leave town. When she refuses she gets threatened and attacked. Now it looks as if Marc may have to protect her while he tries to get her to leave.

Marc was betrayed by a “perfect” woman in his past. He sure isn’t going to become involved with another one. All her life Devyn has been told she doesn’t live up to the high standards of her wealthy adoptive family and her deceased husband said she wasn’t good enough to have a family.  She feels that she is unworthy of love and a family of her own. Even if she is drawn to Marc, who is lucky to come from a big loving family, she knows her blood is tainted and no good man would want her..

There is great chemistry between Marc and Devyn. The relationship is warm and the tension builds nicely. The sexual interaction is sexy without being vulgar. There is a determined tug of war, push and pull between these two that make for a good romance while the suspense and mystery build.  The story moves at a fast pace and the excitement keeps you reading to find out what will happen. next. I highly recommend this series for easy, entertaining reading.

Blog Tour Guest Post by Roxanne St. Claire: Series or Stand-Alone...

Many of my blog followers know by now that I love series. I am so glad that Roxanne, author of Edge of Sight (The Guardian Angelinos), chose to respond to this topic. Welcome, Roxanne, and thank you for sharing your insight on series.

Series or Stand-Alone…Views from a Convert

Thank you so much for inviting me to blog today on this lively book-loving site.  Since my blog tour is all about EDGE OF SIGHT, the book that launches the brand new Guardian Angelinos series, Martha asked me to share my thoughts on the differences between writing stand-alone books and series.

I love the subject because I am only a recent “series convert” – never read ‘em, never liked ‘em, never thought I’d write ‘em.  For one thing, I’m the kind of reader who gets distracted if a couple other than the main hero and heroine are mentioned – immediately, I’m worried if I missed a book.  I’m also the kind of movie-goer who would skip out if I’ve missed the first five minutes of a film.  I can’t bear to not know what happened.  And there was a time not so long ago, when I was purely a reader and not a writer, that I thought the author’s mention of previous characters was a sign of arrogance for assuming I read everything she’s written.

Well, times have changed, and so have I.  Readers demand series!  I’ve had a few fans pick up my first three stand-alone romantic suspense novels at booksignings only to learn they were “just” stand-alones…and instantly return those books to the pile.  So when I decided it was time to jump into the series pool, it was only after creative lightning struck and I found a concept that would allow me to write stand-alone romantic thrillers that could be read and loved all by themselves, but still be enriched by recurring secondary characters and series worldbuilding.

There are so many extra considerations when an author is writing a series, and some of them are truly challenging for me.  For example, it helps for an author to know the “arc” of the series by answering questions such as: What will happen to the anchor characters? How will the whole “group” change by the end of the series? Will any characters die?  (Heavens!)  For a person who does “loose” plotting (and by loose, I mean NO IDEA what is going to happen until it pours out of my fingertips), this kind of vision can be very difficult.

But it wasn’t long before I learned the pros outweighed the cons of a series.  Readers do love a series, and both readers and the writer enjoy a comfort level of sitting down with old friends.  Each book gets a little easier, and “seeding” new heroes and heroines is a ton of fun.   With a series, you can take a character’s story line further and readers can get to know what happens after the HEA.  (Babies!)  Best of all, readers really do become loyal fans and come back book after book after book.

But there are still some downsides to writing a series.  Writers don’t want to get bored – it’s the kiss of death! – or pigeonholed into telling one kind of story.  Readers get attached to certain characters, and if you don’t have things happen the way they way…well, you can hear about it.  An author has to be very careful not to paint herself into a story corner – like making a future hero do something in an book that is so despicable he cannot be redeemed.  And, oh my word, it takes real organization skills to keep everything straight and make sure all the stories, characters, settings, and timelines align.

And, of course, you have to know when to end the series, which can be very like saying goodbye to a trusted friend.  My first series, The Bullet Catchers, is now complete with eight books and two novellas.  It wasn’t easy to end those fun stories, but the time had come and I was ready to move on.  This month, my second series, The Guardian Angelinos, launches with EDGE OF SIGHT.  I’m so excited to delve into this new world of a big, loud, blended Italian clan that forms an ad hoc security company.  There are Angelino and Rossi cousins and siblings galore, tons of family friction, sexy love stories, non-stop action adventure, exotic settings, creepy villains, and, since they’re Italian, some really great food!

And YES, you can read one or all of these books, in any order.  That’s still important to me.  In the first book, former Army Ranger Zach Angelino reluctantly accepts the first assignment for his sister’s fledgling security firm, protecting Harvard-bound law student Samantha Fairchild after she’s witnessed an assassination and is next on the hit man’s list.  The problem?  Sam and Zach are former lovers and he left her for a tour of duty in Iraq three years earlier, then never contacted her again.  She’s not sure she can trust him.  He’s not sure he can resist her.  Now they are trying to crack a conspiracy that leads to Boston’s darkest corners of corruption.  They’ve got to face fears, desires, doubts and one really scary bad guy who wants to kill them both.

The next two books in the series (SHIVER OF FEAR and FACE OF DANGER) will be out back to back in the spring of 2011.  And, I’m thrilled to let readers know that there is a “freequel” on my web site!  This free short story can be easily downloaded so you can meet the main characters of EDGE OF SIGHT, and experience their sexy meeting and heartbreaking goodbye first hand.  Just go to the “free reads” section of www.roxannestclaire.com and download the pdf!

Edge of Sight (The Guardian Angelinos)
So, my question for you…Series or Stand Alone?  Which do you prefer and why?  There’s a GIVEAWAY, of course!  And I’ll pop in all day to answer any questions or comments!

Thanks, Martha, for inviting me and tons of hugs to all the loyal readers out there!

Thank you to Roxanne for this great post! I, for one, will be watching for the next books in this series.
I hope my followers and blog visitors will comment with a Thank you to Roxanne and read my review and enter the Giveaway.

Book Review: Edge of Sight by Roxanne St. Claire

This is romantic suspense as I love it:  intense characters with a strong hero who thinks he isn’t good enough and a committed damsel in distress heroine.

    The killer she can't escape . . .
    The heartbreak she can't forget . . .
The one man who can stop them both.

When Samantha Fairchild witnesses a murder in the wine cellar of the restaurant where she works, the Harvard-bound law student becomes the next target of a professional assassin. Desperate for protection the authorities won't provide, Sam seeks help from Vivi Angelino, an investigative reporter who recruits her brother, Zach, to protect Samantha. A Special Forces vet with the scars to prove he's equally fearless and flawed, Zach takes the job, despite the fact that he and Sam once shared a lusty interlude that ended when he left for war and disappeared from her life. Now, as they crack a conspiracy that leads to Boston's darkest corners, Sam and Zach must face their fears, desires, and doubts, before a hired killer gets a second shot...

Review:  Samantha “Sam” was a witness to a murder when she was 16. Unfortunately it turned out she identified the wrong man.  When the true killer confessed, Sam worked for three years to help gain the release of Billy, the innocent man she helped send to prison.  Billy and Sam became friends through the process and Sam decided she would go to law school to become a lawyer to help others like Billy.

In the process of freeing Billy Sam has exposed some sloppy police work in the investigation procedures. That has put her on the blacklist of the Boston Police department. When Sam witnesses another murder the police don’t want to rely on her eye witness report, much less protect her. But the killer knows Sam was a witness and is out to clean up loose ends.

As she is laying low Sam seeks the help of a good friend who is a serious reporter and may have contacts to get good police updates. Her good friend, Vivi, happens to be the sister of the man Sam fell in love with three years before. After a hot and heavy fling, Zach walked out and returned to the Army without any contact at all. Fortunately Sam’s activities with the Innocence Mission have helped her work through the pain of her heartache even if she hasn’t forgotten.

When Sam seeks Vivi’s help she runs smack into Zach who is back from the service with some serious disfiguring wounds. Zach doesn’t feel he’s good enough for Sam; he thinks she deserves someone whole. Although Sam doesn’t want his help he can see she is scared and he feels compelled to protect her.

Other members of the Angelino family are pulled together to form the PI/security firm to be known as the Guardian Angelinos. They soon discover that there is more than one person out to kill Sam.

There is nonstop action dodging one assassination attempt after another. The killer isn’t beyond using Sam’s friends as bait to draw her in, involving Billy and Vivi in deep trouble.  Meanwhile the heat between Sam and Zach doesn’t simmer, it boils.

Can the Angelinos protect their first client?? Will Sam forgive Zach and can he see his way to acknowledging his love for her?  Read this book to find out for yourself. You will be glad you did.
I look forward to reading more books in this series and more books by this author.
