Product Description
A LOVER'S PROMISE
Connor Grant left his first love in the Highlands, vowing to return after serving in the king's army. Seven years later, he is still fighting for the crown, and his victories are legendary-both in the battlefield and in the bedroom. Yet he's never forgotten his bonnie lass. And he certainly never expected to see her amidst the splendor of the British royal court: beautiful, breathtaking, and tempting him past the point of no return.

A LADY'S DESTINY
The night he left, Mairi MacGregor banished Connor from her life forever. Now her heart belongs only to Scotland. As part of a secret alliance, she journeys to London in search of information . . . only to find herself face to face with the one man she swore she'd never trust again. Though Mairi's body still craves Connor's touch, she can't forgive his betrayal. But a traitor lurks in their midst and to protect her beloved Highlands, Mairi must make a leap of faith and join forces with Connor-even if it means losing her heart to him again.
Review: I enjoy Ms. Quinn’s writing but found this heroine annoying.

Mairi is a strong heroine but her primary feature is her stubbornness. As a six year old minx, Mairi declared herself in love with nine year old Connor. When he was nineteen Connor was called to leave his home in Scotland to go to England to serve in the king’s army.  Although he repeatedly asked Mairi to come to him she refused to leave Scotland. She felt betrayed at his abandonment. Mairi determined not to rely on any man and she learned to fight with sword, blade and spying skills.

Connor is devilishly handsome but more importantly he is honorable and loyal to his duty and to his love.  Granted he hasn’t been a monk for the seven years he was separated from Moira but his bedroom reputation may be exaggerated. On the other hand the legends of his battle victories are deserved.

Connor tried to forget Mairi after she refused to come to him and refused to even open his letters.
But seeing her again in England he knows that she is the only woman for him - if he can only get her to forgive him.  Moira has to fight to maintain her anger as Connor stirs her repressed passion and love for Connor.

Mairi is allowing Lord Oxford to companion her in order to get his secrets about the Cameronians. Oxford’s sister, Lady Elizabeth is intent on seducing Connor or trapping him into marriage. This adds more opportunities for misunderstandings and conflict between Connor and Mairi.

I liked Connor but I found Mairi's shallow attitude overly annoying. It takes half the book for Mairi to be willing to listen to Connor's side . The sexual scenes are bold and lusty - more so than I recalled from the earlier books in this series.

I was glad that the last twenty percent of the book was filled with the spy intrigue. I found the political issues over the Catholic and Protestant power struggles interesting although sad.  I would have enjoyed the story more if there had been more plot focus on the intrigues and less childish stubbornness plus I could have done with a little less bold sex. Ah well - the story is well written and some readers will enjoy the points that I did not.

Forever Romantic Holiday Giveaway - Four Books!

What's better than a ONE Book Giveaway? How about FOUR Books for THREE Winners??!!

Thanks to Forever Romance at Hachette I am hosting a giveaway with books from Four authors you are probably familiar with. I know I have had reviews and giveaways of books by three of them. Great romances to curl up with on a snowy night.

A reclusive widow known for her scientific scholarship, Lady Ciara Sheffield is shadowed by rumors that she poisoned her husband . . . A rakehell rogue notorious for his devil-may-care antics, Lucas Bingham--the Earl of Hadley--is not accused of murdering anything--save for the rules of Polite Society. The only thing they have in common is seeing their names featured in the lurid gossip columns of London's newspapers. Until an ancient manuscript draws them together.

Ciara needs a titled fiancé to quell the slanderous speculations which may send her to the gallows. Lucas needs brilliant scholar to help his elderly uncle decipher the secrets of the mysterious manuscript. So when her friends urge her to accept the earl's proposal of a temporary alliance, Ciara decides that she has no choice but to make a deal with the Devil. And so begins a seductive dance of sinful pleasures and hidden desires as the two of them waltz through the mansions of Mayfair. Lies, intrigue, treachery, sex. They find themselves facing slanderous whispers, unscrupulous relatives-not to speak of their own simmering passions, which quickly ignite into dangerous flames. It's a potent mix and the result may be explosive-and perhaps deadly-if they don't watch their step.

The last thing Garrett, Duke of Calton, expects to find while tracking his sworn enemy is the delectable, mysterious Kate. This beautiful servant girl rouses a longing the battle-scarred ex-soldier had never hoped to feel again. But when she turns out to be the sister of the man he seeks, he's convinced he's been betrayed.

Kate knows her duty to her family, yet how can she ignore Garrett's powerful pull on her heart? Or the heady temptation of his stolen-and sizzling-kisses? Scandal has followed the duke since the war. Now the greatest shock of all is on its way-the one that can separate Garrett and Kate forever.

FROM FANTASY TO ECSTASY Ruby Scott is a beautiful, quiet event planner who leads an oh-so-respectable life. Yet the things that go on in her secret fantasies are anything but. She has every intention of keeping her hidden desires under wraps-until she meets a gorgeous, hard-muscled man ten years her junior. Mark St. Crow is a gifted, up-and-coming musician who collects erotic art and loves to "play" women as much as his piano. After one night of uninhibited passion, Ruby realizes there's no turning back.

Defending Her Was His Duty

Skilled with a sword and quick with her wit, Scottish rebel Claire Stuart cannot be tamed. And nothing can deter her from rescuing her beloved sister and saving them both from arranged marriages--not even the handsome Highlander who vows to protect Claire. His scorching gaze and fiery kiss bring her to the brink of surrender, but she belongs to no man...

Seducing Her Would Be His Reward

Graham Grant has had his share of lasses. But he has never met one as headstrong or as bonnie as Claire--or one with such desperate, dangerous plans. Helping her could betray his honor, his country, and more. Graham can't claim her. Yet everything in him says: Take her, make her yours, teach her pleasure, and never let her go.

SINS THAT CAN'T BE FORGIVEN
Tristan MacGregor is famed throughout the Highlands as a silver-tonged seducer and an unrepentant rogue. Bold and charming, he's dallied with many women, yet none as mysterious as the lass he steals a kiss from at king's court. Little does he know this beauty is one of his clan's greatest enemies.

PASSION THAT CAN'T BE DENIED
Isobel Fergusson has despised the bloodthirsty MacGregors ever since they murdered her father. She's horrified to learn that the handsome stranger she kissed is of this clan. But Tristan means to possess her at any cost and Isobel's body turns traitor at his touch. Can a man she's sworn to hate be the only one she can ever love?

Review: This book clinches it for me: Paula Quinn is a  favorite “new” historical romance author. Her Scottish historicals rank up there for me with Catherine Coulter, Christina Dodd and Johanna Lindsey. Paula manages a great balance of sweet and sensual romance set in a wonderful story with emotional and conflicting characters.

Isobel is not a wealthy, pampered miss. No, she is a hard working, dedicated country Scotswoman who does what it takes to take care of her family. She doesn’t want to fall for the too gorgeous and too glibe highlander, especially after hearing about his reputation with the ladies. But Tristan just doesn’t give up and bit by bit she sees something fine and honorable in him.

Tristan is not as cold, careless and flippant as he might at first seem.  As a youngster he loved all the tales of great knights and he imagined that perhaps he could grow to be one. But when a young youth’s temper ends in tragedy of death he closed himself off. Part of his strategy was that if you don’t love and don’t get close, you can’t be hurt by others. He is as surprised as anyone when he can’t stay away from this fiery lady with the cutting tongue. She doesn’t fall under his spell as easily as most ladies and that is part of the challenge. But should he really dally with his clan’s enemy?

This story is full of pranks from the younger brothers that add a fun dimension. I liked Tristan’s persistence in trying to win over the Ferguson family. Then after he wins them over he will have to face his own clan and Isobel will have to be brave to support him.

Here is a snippet I really liked:
He’d been certain he couldn’t want her more than when she was rejecting him. But he was wrong. Winning her was much better. She had fought hard and with good reason, and had made him want to be the man he used to dream of being.
This story moved along at a good pace. I enjoyed the romantic sparring and the brotherly botherings. There were times I was grinning and other times wincing. Again the author presented the right balance for me of likeable characters, fun bantering, steady believable plot and sensual attraction without sexual overload.  Although, with Tristan, this story was a mite more sexy than Ravished by a Highlander. I add Ms. Quinn to my list of sure reads to feed my historical romance cravings.

Blog Tour Q&A INTERVIEW with Paula Quinn, Author of Seduced by a Highlander

Please welcome author Paula Quinn to this Question and Answer session.

1Q.  I have enjoyed several of your historical romances. Do you have plans to write in any other genres, perhaps sci fi or paranormal since you liked those in your childhood writings?

Paula: Yes, I’d love to write paranormals set in an historical setting.  I have a few manuscripts already written but they need a lot of work before submitting.

Martha: that certainly sounds interesting and I am going to keep and eye out for those.
2Q.  What most inspires your plots?

Paula:  I’m inspired by so many things, a beautiful song, a haunting picture, a certain face. Stories and their characters come to me usually at the most inopportune time, like when I don’t have a pen. J Kings and history inspire me the most though. I always imagine what life was like during a particular king’s reign. Heroes and heroines are born from that.

Martha: I like how you have included a combination of court life and country life in your stories.
3Q.  Why did you choose the particular time period and setting for the Children of the Mist series?

Paula: The series was born from Laird of the Mist. I chose the seventeenth century after researching the MacGregor clan. Their proscription was coming to an end and Callum wanted the story told through his life.  The current books continue roughly twenty years later when England and Scotland were plunged into political turmoil yet again with the ascension of a new Catholic king on the throne. The period was perfect for new heroes to emerge in defense of their beliefs.

Martha: And heroes are the basic stuff of romance.
4Q.  When you do a series do you have each book plotted out before you start the first one or do the second and third flow from the first book?

Paula:  Well, with The Children of the Mist series, I had to write up a series synopsis before submitting, so I had a general idea of how each book would flow. But anyone who plots first knows that characters often change the direction of their story. It always amazes me to see those changes from synopsis to finished product.
I like to give my characters free reign to take their own path, but working with a series doesn’t always allow it. You have to follow guidelines set by the first book, and sometimes those guidelines get in the way of the subsequent books. Often, the hero in book two or three in the series is set up or introduced in the first and some changes just can’t be made. It’s more difficult to let the story take its own direction.

Seduced by a HighlanderMartha: You do write some strong minded characters and I can imagine that they might be hard to control.
5Q.  Can you summarize Seduced by a Highlander in one sentence?

Paula:  A notorious rogue seeks to restore his honor by seducing the daughter of his clan’s worst enemy.

Martha: That is a good synopsis but doesn't that seem an odd way to restore one's honor? :)
6Q.  In Seduced by a Highlander is there anything that your heroine would never be caught dead doing or saying?

Paula: Isobel Fergusson would never, ever admit who truly killed the hero’s beloved uncle.

Martha:  Ah yes. I waited for quite a bit of the book to find the answer to that secret.
7Q.  Is there an ancillary character in the Children of the Mist series you had the most fun with?

Ravished by a HighlanderPaula:  There’s always a character that springs to life for me more than others.  In Ravished by a Highlander, it was Finlay Grant.  (He actually fought to be in every scene. It was tempting and heartbreaking having to refuse.) In Seduced by a Highlander, it was Tamas, Isobel’s youngest brother.  Tamas is eleven years old and Tristan's (the hero) worst nightmare.

Martha:  That Tamas is definitely a scamp.
8Q.  If you could trade places with anyone, real or imagined (including paranormal creatures), in any time, who would it be and why?

Paula:  Hmm, interesting question. I think I would trade places with Kate Campbell from Laird of the Mist.  While writing Laird, I felt a deep kinship with her and envied her for living in Skye-a place where I dream of living-in a time that crafted tough, honorable, loyal men. It’s not for everyone, but I would love to wake up to ancient mountain ranges and vast, isolated hills, watching my husband and sons bringing in the sheep.

Martha: Skye does seem to have an enchantment all its own. Wonderful that you would choose a place from your own writing.
9Q.  Do you write for yourself or for your audience?

Paula:  For both, I think. Fortunately, my audience likes tender romance, featuring men of honor and strong yet vulnerable heroines.

Martha: I am part of that audience that truly appreciates your lovely and engaging romances.
10Q.  What do you like to do for fun when you’re not writing?

Paula: I enjoy reading when time allows, shopping with my daughters, spending time with my family, and interacting with my readers on my Facebook author page.

Martha: Now I am curious what you read when you can.
11Q.  If you could have readers finish a sentence what would it be?

Paula:  "The thing he found more desirable about her was her ability to ____________"

Martha:  Let's see. My answer: "match him in their verbal sparring."
12Q.  Just for fun: Do you have a favorite Highlander recipe?

Paula:  Highland Toffee

Ingredients
·    1/3 cup vegetable oil
·    2 cups quick cooking oats
·    1/2 cup light brown sugar
·    1/4 cup light corn syrup
·    1/2 teaspoon salt
·    1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
·    1 cup semisweet chocolate chips, melted
·    1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)
(This is a picture I found online) Directions
.Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Generously grease an 8 or 9 inch square pan.
.In a large bowl, stir together vegetable oil and oats. Mix in brown sugar, corn syrup, salt, and vanilla. Press mixture into prepared pan.
.Bake for 12 minutes in preheated oven. Set aside to cool.
.Cut into 4 large squares to remove from pan. Cover with melted chocolate, and sprinkle with nuts, if desired. Allow the chocolate to cool, and then cut each square into 9 pieces.

Martha: That sounds scrumptious. A good recipe for my husband or daughter to try.

Thank you so much, Paula, for sharing some of your writing process with us.

    FORBIDDEN LOVE

Davina Montgomery is no ordinary English lady. For her own protection, she's been locked away from society, her true identity the Crown's most closely guarded secret. Until a shocking betrayal--and a bold rescue--land her in the arms of a fierce Highlander, a powerful warrior whose searing gaze and tantalizing touch awaken her body and soul.

    UNDENIABLE DESIRE

As the firstborn son of a powerful Scottish laird, Robert MacGregor has no loyalty to the English throne, but he's not the kind of man to leave a woman in distress, even if she is English. He vows to deliver Davina to safety, unharmed and untouched. Yet one stolen kiss leaves them both smoldering with desire...and desperate for more. With Davina's secret threatening to destroy his clan, Rob must choose between everything he holds dear and the one woman he can't live without.
Review: This is a book I did not want to put down.  I wanted to devour it!  [If you have read my reviews then you know that I don't gush... this one is me sort of gushing.]

Davina is a wonderfully ethereal character with a haunting air of loneliness and sorrow.  She has grown up with the nuns and the soldiers who protect her as her only friends but for some reason she is untouchable. Before the first chapter is over all of her companions are dead and she is alone. Then she is snatched and carried off by a fierce Scotsman, not knowing if he is friend or foe.

Robert MacGregor is a powerful warrior, a strategist, and a respected leader in his clan - a "hunky" Highlander.  He is not frivolous or careless with his affections. He honors duty and responsibility and tends to be a bit somber and sometimes downright grumpy, scowling at the men around him. Robert’s companions make for an interesting mix of side characters and I love the bits of Scottish brogue.

Rob races against unknown dangers to get Davina to the one place he believes she will be safe.  Davina is slow to trust this brooding giant of a man but she begins to realize that every action he takes makes her feel safe - even the first stolen kiss.

Davina hasn’t had dreams of a life of her own for years.  Robert suspects that this beautiful damsel is out of his league. He represents safety to her and she brings laughter and light to his world.  How are they to resist the magnetic pull that draws them together in spite of each knowing they shouldn’t tempt fate?

The danger and intrigue in the story are non stop with a truly horrific enemy who wreaks death and destruction, a heart breaking betrayal by a friend and brave battles along the way. The romance between Davina and Robert starts out slow and sweet and builds to sensual fullfillment and seemingly unshakable commitment.  But are there undeniable forces that could pull them apart? Even if her foes don’t kill her will she be allowed to remain with a common Highlander?

I loved the story and the characters from beginning to end. This story had just the right balance for me of likable characters, steady plot and action and sensual attraction without sexual overload.  This was the first book I read by Paula Quinn but I definitely will want to read more.
