Sunday Words of Encouragement July 21, 2019

Our substitute Sunday School teacher shared more videos of community revivals. Then he played a quick video showing five of the natural disasters last year, (which doesn’t include the ones this year). Then he reminded us that the God who created the universe said to Solomon:

14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14.

There are revivals where people seriously pray, including revivals in Iran!

We shared beautiful praise and worship before the Sermon. Pastor continued the series of Resolution., based in Hebrews 11 today, the ‘faith chapter’.

Adults, just like children, often ask questions consistently seeking information. We try to plan but plan don't always work out. Do we stop and ask: “God show me Your plan.”
We often disrupt God's plan trying to skip steps.
Hebrews 11:8-19 talks about the faith of Abraham and Sarah.
They believed in the promise given by God.
God called Abraham to a greater plan.
God called.
Abraham obeyed.
Abraham trusted and waited.

When it comes to God's plan and purpose, we often have to wait.
Psalm 16:11 says that God makes known the path of life, fills us with joy in His presence where we find pleasures forevermore.

Point: In the waiting or the doing, our true Joy is found in God's presence.

We have choices in the waiting:
Do nothing
Complain and grumble.
Take matters into our own hands.
Quit and walk away.
OR wait and find that fullness of joy in God's presence.

David had to wait a long time to become king. David waited for His turn according to God’s plan.

What is it you are waiting for?
More than getting on, He wants us in His presence. He wants relationship.
Today is the day of salvation; there is no reason to wait; there may be no time to wait.

This song fits today’s message: Wait on the Lord

11 You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

Lord, please help me to seek to follow Your plans and wait on Your word.

Review:
Riley is a professional linebacker and a young man who served a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Then he became a hero fighting a terrorist threat on his own turf in American with his special ops team. (Book 1: Monday Night.) The team dealt with a second wave of terrorists that strike directly at Riley and his loved ones. (Book Two: Blown Coverage.) Riley is surprised and confused when he is traded from his beloved Colorado team to a team in Washington, D.C.

Before Riley can even get settled in with the new team he is injured. That doesn’t stop his new bosses from using him for promotional purposes. The situation also intrigues a female friend from back home who sees Riley as a way to journalistic stardom. She is prepared to push her career forward even if it exposes Riley’s covert operations.

Once again Riley’s football career is interrupted as he is drawn back into the special ops team to help track down terrorists who have stolen nuclear weapons. Riley and his team have previously briefed the Whitehouse on the dangers on an EMP strike. Now that threat seems imminent if Riley and the other warriors don’t stop the terrorists.

This is a fast-paced thriller with danger and consequences resulting from an EMP strike over a major city. I enjoyed meeting the team Riley works with, including his personal security guard, his superior, the geeky, genius computer tech “Gooey”, the doctor, Khadi, and others. Khadi holds Riley’s interest, but he has to keep his distance because he is a strong Christian and she is not a believer. This creates conflicts and problems they both are aware of. There are other Christian friends from Riley’s Colorado football team who end up with challenges of their own during this adventure (or misadventure) as they find themselves in the city after all power goes out.

I had a little trouble sorting through the characters at first and this might not have been a problem if I had read books 1 and 2. Still, most of my ladies book club really enjoyed this and a couple will get the other books. I picked up the boxed set so I could go back if I wanted and have book four too. I recommend this to reader’s who like action packed Christian Thrillers. You might want to start with book 1.

Review:
The Needle, aka Faber, is one of the handful of German spies who has yet to be nabbed in London. He has been living as one invisible workman after another. He is careful to choose his personas, his housing and his employment to minimize suspicion. But if his disguise is at risk, he has few scruples in eliminating those who might expose him.

Faber meets with another German spy whom he believes to have been compromised. The man gives an important message to Faber who sets off to investigate the situation. Faber discovers the biggest deception of the Allies’ war strategy. He gets pictures and now has to get the pictures and his information back safely to Hitler. He is on the run with a dogged inspector hot on his tail.

Faber’s efforts to reach a U-boat rendezvous bring him to isolated Storm Island. One end of the island is occupied by a crippled pilot (David), his sad, conflicted wife (Lucy) and their child. An elderly shepherd lives on the other end of the island and the sheep are in between. Faber is prepared to kill everyone on the island if he has to, but he might be surprised by the resistance he faces.

This spy thriller starts a little slowly but Follet spends that time developing the characters. Not only the Faber, Lucy and David but also several of the authorities involved in the hunt for “the Needle”. Faber is such a precise spy that he stays a step ahead of his trackers. There were some direct sex scenes which weren’t necessary for me even though the scenes added to the depth of the characters I found the deceptive war strategy very interesting and I felt that Follet captured the language and somber tone of the setting. I especially enjoyed the tension of this story as it built to the dangerous climax.

I haven’t read Follet’s longer works but I see he has more WWII spy stories I might like. This may be an older story, but it is still a worthy spy thriller and especially recommended those who like reading in the WWII genre.

Audio Notes: Eric Lincoln does a good job with the narration. His accent fits the story and he provides distinct voices for Faber, the various Englishmen and even for Lucy and her son. The narration added to my enjoyment of this story.

If you saw the pictures posted of my bookshelves and boxes you know I do have lots of books! And that doesn't include the other eight or so boxes at my office!! And more books as I find deals too good to pass up! I am sharing my book bounty by these Friday Pick Giveaways.

I started Friday Pick on November 27, 2009 and in almost EIGHT years I have posted 82 groups of 16 plus an additional 21 totaling 1,333 books to find new homes! (as of November 9, 2018).

I am happy to say that so far about 1,259+ books have found new homes through this feature! YAY. [A year or so ago I posted I had reached 2000 books given away. As I calculated the numbers 11/2/17 I realized that had to be an error. I realized I went from 1098 to 2001 instead of 1101. Guess I was tired; sorry for the error.] I have to update my print out to check the exact number sent out - a few were never claimed. I periodically update the lists - deleting those won. You can still go to the Friday Pick list link to see older posts and the older lists book pictures if you want!

Because postage to overseas can be prohibitive I am willing to give a $5.00 book certificate to international winners - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, ARe, TWRP, ClassAct Books, eTreasures, Desert Breeze, etc....you tell me where and I'll set it up. So for my overseas visitors your comment may indicate a smaller book and I'll check postage or note your choice of gift card.

I learned that The Book Depository does not ship to everywhere. The postage for some of the books to far away places runs between $7.00 and $10.00 and up. Since I would award $5.00 for The Book Depository to an international winner, as an alternative you may choose a smaller book and we will hope the postage will not exceed $6.00. If the postage is more, or if you want to pick a larger book and you are willing to pay any extra postage beyond the $6.00 I will work with you on that. This may not make a difference to many but if it helps one or two of you to give one of my books a home that will make me happy too. :o)

Review:
Lauren has a great group of friends who support her. Her friend Ivy has inherited funds and she would be more than happy to gift or lend the money Lauren needs to open her dream store, Paperback Vinyl, for used books, records and related items. But Lauren is set on earning her own way before opening the store. She has entered Hashtag Hunt, an online contest hoping to win the $10,000.00 prize. The hunt requires texting 12 specific images in 12 hours to the host, “Wizard”.

Ivy has helped Lauren get into the top five of the leader board as they begin Challenge 5 of 12: #HitW, Hottie In The Wild. The girls are ready to leave the current pub when a new man walks in. Lauren has found her HitW and sets out to surreptitiously get pictures of him. Then he and his service buddy, Scott, capture Lauren in the act.

When Brenner and Scott, “Skully”, learn the reason for the pictures, they insist on joining the party. Scott is immediately intent on getting to know Ivy better and Brenner is pleased to find out if Lauren has any flaws. The guys add great banter and romance on the hunt while Lauren calls other friends to help locate items needed which include: dumpster find, ‘old school’, pay phone and more. Lauren starts to fall for Brenner, but she has to keep her head about her to stick within the rules if she is going to win the contest.

I quickly was pulled in by the light tone of the story and the fun friend interaction. I’ve always loved scavenger hunts and road rallies and I loved the idea of this contest. The rules made it tricky and challenging which I liked. The addition of the romance interest is sweet and at times sappy. Not everyone believes in love at first sight (it’s how I met my hubby) but even if it is strong interest at first sight it makes the story upbeat and warm. I also liked how the story rotates POV between Lauren and Brenner. This kept the momentum and interest engaging for me. I would enjoy reading/listening to more fun stories from Ms. Seek and I recommend this to romance readers looking for a cute, lighthearted story.

Audio Notes:Andrea Emmes and Tim Paige do a great job with the narration. They share the light tone and fun energy. The narration enhanced an enjoyable experience.
