Sharing Beyond Books #96 Comment Giveaway April 20, 2013

Hello, Welcome to SBB.

Hi Friends. Happy Saturday night! How is everyone doing?
Thank you to all who shared last week.

We had a good response last week and 22 out of 32 people can swim. Eight out of those love to swim; four can swim enough to not drown and they rest didn't specify. Ricki can swim but is allergic to chlorine, which is unusual. Annuba wants to learn to swim.

I was a bit surprised that 20 out of 32 people are okay with longer books. Six actually love long books and many will read them as long as the story is good. I agree with that but you don't know if it is good until you try it. :-)

WEEK #96 Questions

Q1. Miki asks:  Do you seek information when, while reading a book, you learn about a special event that doesn't exist in your country or you don't know about??
A: I can not think of a particular event that I have looked up but, YES I would look up an event if I was unfamiliar with it.

Here is a place and an event that I think would make a great setting:  Harbin Ice and Snow Festival in China.

Q2. My non-bookish Question this week: Do you play an instrument??
A: I learned to play the flute in middle school and I played guitar in college. However, I have not played either in many years.

  6. 1) I don't seek information as such because I'm more of a romance junkie and that is what matters to me but I do like reading about things which don't take place in my country. Its always a pleasure to learn about different cultures and traditions :)

    2) I don't play any instrument.

  8. Yes, I am always looking stuff up. El Internet is great for that. Often, my favorite authors will include some tidbit that will intrigue me, so I have to go find out more.

I had piano lessons in the 6th grade. But we had an older, upright piano that had been moved more than once and not tuned in many, many years. So, when I practiced at home, it didn't sound like my lessons with the teacher at her place.

  9. 1. Sometimes if there is something that I don't know about and it intrigues me, I will go look it up. Now, if I am in bed reading at night after I turned off my computer, I have a tendency to ask my husband when I have a question, and then he is like "why are you asking me?"
    2. I can play the piano.

  12. 1. Yes, I do. I recently read a story about the civil rights movement and there was an event that I never heard of before and I looked it up and read more about it. I have a high level of curosity!

Note: I have never been to Harbin but did you know that there was a tour brought to United States in the past? Some ice sculptures that were lit up with pretty lights were in a special cold room in El Monte, CA. My husband and I walked through it. It was amazing. We walked over a ice bridge and had to real careful to fall down. I only wish I had a camera at the time. There were so many different kinds of buildings.

    2. I am not very musical! In elementary, I played the flutophone and later I took lessons in the Chinese zither (guozheng). The pieces are written in numbers. I was actually learning but had stop the lessons because they were so expensive. It is a joy to hear the guozheng and know how to make that sound!

  19. 1. I might look it up if I were really interested but I'm usually loath to put down a book if I'm at an interesting part & would probably forget later!

  20. 1. I agree with Bookishqueen to some extent--usually, in good books, the author explains any different cultural aspects or events well. But I've also occasionally become really interested in something I read about in a book, and even if it's explained well by the author, I still do some outside research (love me some Wikipedia!) to learn even more.

    2. I play the piano passably (I used to be much better when I was growing up!) and used to play the flute (but I never liked it).

  21. I follow via NB: Meghan Stith
    1. Yes. Even if I come across something that I've never heard of like a piece of clothing or a ritual or a person, I look them up on Google and try to find out everything about it or them.
    2. Yes. A few, actually. I'm a classically-trained pianist. I studied for 14 years. I'm also a classically-trained singer. I'm what they call a Dramatic Soprano. It means I have a big range. I played french horn for six years and still remember the fingerings. One of those things that don't leave you. I've been trained in strings and percussion but I'm really a novice at those.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  22. Q1: I do look up events, places, names, words or phrases I am unfamiliar with. It's something I love about having an eReader, I can just click on text and get information!

Q2: I played trumpet from 5th grade through 12th grade, and I was in the marching band and concert band.

  23. 1: Occasionally I look up an event, but I am more likely to research a Historical figure, which I have done multiple times.

2: I have recently started teaching myself to play the piano. I would love to learn the violin also.

  24. 1. I do like to know everything I can about what I'm reading. Generally, I expect the author to give me enough info to keep me in the know. I can't remember the last time I actually had to look an event up.
    2. No. I always wanted to play the flute in school but my parents couldn't afford it. Maybe one day I'll take lessons:)
