Sharing Beyond Books #149 Comment Giveaway May 3, 2014

Hello again on Saturday night and Welcome to Sharing Beyond Books, SBB!
Thanks to everyone who commented last week.

Six out of 17 people indicate that they never 'do not finish' a book; six would not DNF for historical errors. The other six will not finish if the book doesn't engage them within a certain number of chapters.

The Winner from SBB #148 comments is: #14 bn100 who can make a GC choice if international or book choice from the ARC/Review titles, Christmas titles or Love titles - all linked near the end of the post.  Please let me know your choice by completing the (new) WINNER FORM.

WEEK #149 (One Question.)

Q1. Mary P asks: How many books in a series is too many??
A:  Never too many if the series is good enough then bring 'em on even though it may be hard to get them all read!   I am sometimes surprised by long series, for example, the In Death series which is in the 30s. On the other hand there are times when a series loses its attraction.

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask. Input suggestions in this Suggested Question Form. At the end of each month I draw from the suggestions I used during the month and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions. Thanks for sending in questions! We still have a supply of questions but from the same people so hopefully others will send more in -- even if they are duplicates I'll weed through or try to modify to use.

Your turn to share:

Q1. Mary P asks: How many books in a series is too many??

SBB Comment Winners can choose a selection from the Valentine and "Love" books, the Christmas Giveaway Books (this is the new link), or the June 2013 Newly Updated ARC/Review List.

Open internationally and an international winner may get a smaller book or a $5.00 GC if I decide the mailing is too much.

  1. Oh my goodness, 30 books in a series?! That's way too much for me. I think anything over ten books makes me iffy.

  2. The only really long series I read was the Morland Dynasty one which was endless. It was never ever boring though.

  3. If it's a series where each book is complete in itself then I don't mind if it's longer; 5 books or more. But if (in the case of most fantasy series) each book is a continuation of the story & you have to keep following the series for the ending (cliffhangers are terrible on the nerves!) I like it to be shorter, 3-4 books.

  4. As many as you need to legitimately tell the story without dragging it out or cashing in on the franchise.

  5. If I'm enjoying the books, then I tend to prefer longer book series. :)

  6. If a series is amazing there can never be too many books, but having said that I have found that very long series tend to lose their appeal in that the storyline seems stale. I know I contradicted myself.

  7. Congrats to bn100!

I don't think there is a limit to how many books are in a series as long as they all go together. I've come across some series that stop but seems like to me they should of had a few more books to them. I also have come across some series that seems like they should of stop after so many books, its like they lost the main focus of the series.

  8. Longer series run the risk of meh in the middle books. Three or four books seem like enough to keep the story arc engaging and the reader interested.

  9. It really depends as long as the series stays original and true to the main storyline i don't think there is maximum number of books but when it's just the same over and over then it's too much . However that can happen after 15, 30 books as well as after 2 or 3 so it's really depends on the author writing style and world building i guess

now do i love long series.... i must admit i'm sometimes afraid when i see a already long series or learn that teh author is planning 15 or 20books because i'm afraid i won't get the end ( if teh publishers stop it in the middle or something)

  11. congrats winner!
ahh realistically some series just can't carry on try as they might -
even in shorter ones, some are stronger than others being a disappointment which puts one on edge of wondering which one to p up next..
glad for libraries in those cases !
    hapPy reading everyone =)

  12. I like about 3 in a series and I don't like a long time between them. If I've read a lot in between I tend to have trouble remembering all the characters in the books.

  13. About 3 is my limit for books in a series.

  14. When I love a series I never want it to end! My favorite recent contemporary series are Emily March's Eternity Springs (Book #8 is just out) and Susan Mallery's Fools Gold (#13 is just out).

  15. I LOVE the In Death series! I don't care how many books there are in a series so long as the story is good throughout. I think it's closer to 40+ now including shorts.
